Chapter Text
June was in the garage of her family’s house continuing to work on her gadget: a remote that could open a portal to the Ghost World, when her brother Ollie came in with some exciting news.
“June, June! Guess what Molly just texted me?” Ollie excitedly asked his little sister.
She lifted her safety goggles and looked at her brother. “I have no idea, what did she say?” she replied.
“Well, I know this is very sudden but Molly wanted to invite us and Libby for a game night at her house. Would you like to come?” Ollie explained.
June thought for a few seconds. She was making decent progress on the exterior of the gadget but since she needed to get ectoplasm from Scratch anyway (she never had a good chance last week) she decided to put her work on hold. Right now, she had some older kids to thrash in whatever game the McGee’s had in mind.
“I’m in! Just give me a little bit to put my stuff away,” June said, with Ollie offering a thumbs up in response as he exited the garage. Once June had cleaned her workspace, the two walked over to the McGee’s house.
“What’s the passcode?” Darryl jokingly said as he opened the front door by just a bit. “Nah, I’m kidding, get in here.”
The Chen kids were let into the house by Darryl while Molly and Libby set up the game, the classic friendship-ending RPG that was Mega City.
“Ooh, the band kids and I love playing this! You guys play Mega City too?” June asked the group.
“Not me, this is my first time,” Libby said. “Molly, you said this game has quite a bit of history in your family, right?”
“You could say that,” Molly said with a nervous chuckle. “It’s a good thing Mom is out GigPigging because she can get very competitive when it comes to Mega City. I think I’ve had to dig this box out of our backyard twice at this point.”
“How did it even end up there the second time? I don’t think Emmie and Uncle David wanted to play it back when they visited,” Darryl wondered.
Who’s Emmie? June thought to herself. She met a girl with that name while she was in New York for winter break, but surely that wasn’t the same person. June was about to ask for more details when Scratch floated into the living room with an enormous amount of snacks.
“Alright, I’ve got enough Yim-Yums to last through all of our afterlives, are we still waiting on Swoopy Hair and his sister? Oh, hey Ollie and June,” Scratch said, to which Ollie waved. June didn’t even bother waving, she had a question for the blue marshmallow.
“Scratch! I was wondering if I could borrow some ectoplasm from your left index finger. It’s for science,” June suddenly asked.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa! Slow down kid, let's discuss removing my fingers after I use them to beat you all in this game, capeesh?” Scratch said, sarcastically. Not that he was against helping June with her experiments or anything, it just had to be for the right price.
“And you promise you’re not gonna cheat this time, right Scratch? I want the Molly McGee Guarantee that you won’t cheat,” Molly said.
“I 100% Molly McGee Guarantee that I will not cheat in Mega City. See? I’m so serious about it that I rhymed, you can’t get any more serious than that,” Scratch said.
“Actually, ‘McGee’ and ‘city’ are near rhymes. They don’t match up perfectly,” Libby corrected.
“Well, we can’t all be award-winning writers now can we Libby?” Scratch retorted.
“Wait, the writing on the box says ‘2-4 Players,’ that might be a problem,” Ollie noticed. He was right since there were six people in the McGee’s living room.
“Maybe we can split into groups of three and the top two from each group compete in a final round?” Libby suggested.
Darryl made an incorrect buzzer sound with his mouth, then gave his thoughts on Libby’s idea. “Everyone knows Mega City is best played with four people, so we gotta find two more players if we’re gonna play two games,” he said.
Molly agreed. “Good point, we could invite Dad which gets us to seven, and as for number eight, I bet J-E-F-F would love to play!”
Almost like clockwork, Geoff appeared out of a portal and into the living room. “That’s right Molly! I would love to play whatever game you guys are playing, just remember that my name is spelled G-E-O-”
“F-F yep, you’re on the bracket, buddy!” Molly replied, to which Geoff became very excited.
“I heard my name, are we playing Mega City?” Pete McGee said as he walked into the living room.
“Yep! I’ll add you in too, Dad,” Molly said.
Molly set up the games as follows:
- Game 1: Molly vs. Scratch vs. Libby vs. Ollie
- Game 2: Darryl vs. Geoff vs. Pete vs. June
- Game 3: Winner of Game 1 vs. Winner of Game 2
“Alright, let the first game begin!” Molly said. “Also, Ollie?”
“What’s up?” Ollie replied. Molly’s face became almost devilish as her next words left her mouth.
“You may be my boyfriend, but don’t think that means I’m going to go easy on you.”
