We’re Only Getting Older, Baby

Summary:

“It’s not that,” Robert sighed heavily, finally dropping his hand. “I found another gray hair.”

“You did?” Giselle’s face lit up with excitement when he nodded, and she leaned back, tracing her eyes over the back of his head. “Where? Show me!”

Notes:

because I like to think Robert gets huffy over silly things like this :3

Work Text:

Giselle watched curiously as Robert stared at his reflection in the bathroom mirror, a small frown on his face. He was muttering something under his breath while fiddling with his hair and she wondered if, perhaps, he might be grumbling about the length of it.

Lifting her hand, she knocked softly on the doorframe, intent on saying she would happily cut it for him, but got no response. In fact, Robert didn’t acknowledge her presence at all, which only increased her confusion. She knocked again, this time a bit louder, but still received nothing in return. Sighing dramatically, she stepped up behind him, and wrapped her arms around his waist. Robert instinctively leaned against her, and she smiled, pressing a kiss between his shoulder blades.

“Why are you scowling at yourself?”

“I’m not scowling.”

Giselle pushed up onto her toes, and laid her chin on his shoulder, a playful grin on her face. “There is a crease in between your eyebrows, and your jaw seems quite tense. That looks like a scowl to me.”

Robert rolled his eyes, causing her smile to grow more, and she pressed a kiss to the crook of his neck.

“I can give you another haircut, if that is what’s bothering you.”

“It’s not that,” he sighed heavily, finally dropping his hand. “I found another gray hair.”

“You did?” Giselle’s face lit up with excitement when he nodded, and she leaned back, tracing her eyes over the back of his head. “Where? Show me!”

He gestured to the spot just above his temple, and she moved to his side, lifting her hand to touch it herself.

“Oh, it is beautiful!”

Robert looked at her with a mixture of confusion, and amusement, and shook his head. “You think everything is beautiful.”

“I do. Especially if it is regarding you.” Giselle slowly ran her fingers through his hair, momentarily distracted by just how soft it was. “I love your little gray patches, but the ones on your chest are my favorites, by far.”

“I don’t have any gray hair on my chest.”

“Yes, you do.” Grabbing the bottom of his shirt, she pushed it up, and pointed to three strands of hair near his collarbone. “See? One, two, three. Then again, I suppose you cannot always see them, as I often rest my head there, but they are my favorites.” Biting her lip, Giselle trailed her fingertips down his chest, and stomach, her cheeks warm. “I am very excited to see just how much of you turns gray.”

“Stop it,” Robert mumbled, a small blush forming on his face. Looking back in the mirror, he let out another sigh. “Do you think I should dye it?”

“Your gray hairs? No, absolutely not. I just told you I love them.” He began fiddling with his hair again, and Giselle finally realized that he was trying to style it in a way that hid the lighter strands from view. “Why are you doing that?”

“Because I don’t like them.”

“Why not?”

“Because it means I’m getting old.”

Giselle stared at him quietly for a moment, waiting for a teasing smile to spread across his face, indicating he was being sarcastic. When it didn’t appear, however, she let out a loud laugh.

“Robert, you are thirty-five!” she exclaimed, squeezing his side playfully. “That is hardly old!”

“It’s still the oldest I’ve ever been,” Robert grumbled, ignoring her continued laughter. “And I’m the oldest in the family.”

“Not by much. You have some here, too, by the way.” Giselle gestured to a spot near his elbow, and he whined quietly, refusing to look.

“Stop pointing them out.”

“You are being silly!”

“No, I’m not. I shouldn’t be this gray, my dad wasn’t this gray at thirty-five.”

Her smile softened, and she cupped his face, pressing a gentle kiss to his cheek.

“You are not your father. You are my Robert, and I think you look very handsome with your little gray patches.” The corner of his mouth quirked up, but the crease on his forehead remained, and she tried not to laugh again. Sliding her arm around his waist, she gave him a tight squeeze, and kissed his bicep. “Aging is a very beautiful thing, Robert. It is nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed of.”

“I’m not embarrassed. I just don’t like the reminder.”

“Well, I do. And we are supposed to grow old together, right? This is simply a sign we are doing just that.”

“Together is the key word, there,” Robert chuckled, wrapping his arm around her in return. “You don’t have a single gray hair.”

“Not yet, but I am certain I will someday. Then again, perhaps I won’t, as I do not stress myself out over silly little things the way you do.”

“I don’t stress myself out over silly little things.”

“You are doing that exact thing right now.”

“I am not.”

“Yes, you are!” Robert let out a long, dramatic sigh, making her laugh again, and dropped his head to her shoulder. Throwing her other arm around him, Giselle held him tighter, and kissed his neck softly. “Like I said, aging is a very beautiful thing. And you have a very long way to go before you are considered old.”

“At the rate my hair is changing; I have a feeling I’ll be completely gray by the time I’m forty,” Robert whined, hugging her waist.

“Well, I am very excited to see that.” Bringing her hand up, she tugged gently at a gray patch on the back of his head. “You know, if you do become entirely gray, that would make you— Oh, what was that term Nancy told me…”

“I don’t want to hear about anything Nancy told you—”

“Silver fox! That was it!” Giselle laid her hands on Robert’s chest as he pulled away, a half-smile on his face. “I’m going to start calling you that from now on.”

“Please don’t.”

“But it is what you are!”

“Not yet!” He laughed, and cupped her cheeks, squishing them together playfully. “By law, you can’t call me that until I’m completely gray.”

Giselle joined in his laughter, and grabbed his wrists, pulling his hands away. “Are you going to have me arrested if I do not listen?”

“Yes. And I’ll make sure no lawyer defends you.”

“Fine, butthead. But just know, the moment I notice you are entirely gray; I am saying it.”

“Wonderful,” Robert muttered sarcastically, rolling his eyes. Grinning, Giselle wrapped her arms around his neck, and kissed the bridge of his nose. “I can’t wait.”

Notes:

and once the gray starts showing up in Robert's facial hair, I think Giselle's a goner for sure. Just a melted puddle on the floor.
