Work Text:

James Potter loved his birthday.

While some people are indifferent or even dread the occasion, James reveled in it, relishing the chance to celebrate with family and friends. From the moment he entered the world, his birthday became synonymous with joy and merriment, as his parents never skipped a beat in marking the occasion.

To Fleamont and Euphemia, James was nothing short of a miracle. After years of trying and failing to conceive, their hopes had nearly faded.

On 27th March, 1960, at what some might consider a ripe age for motherhood, even in the wizarding world, Euphemia Potter gave birth to her first and only son, James Fleamont Potter. And that called for a celebration every year on that very day.

Every year, without fail, until he headed off to Hogwarts, he was treated to a lavish party and showered with gifts — heaps of them. The Potter couple didn't shy away from admitting they spoiled their son, and they did so with pride. He was their pride and joy, their most precious gift, so they pulled out all the stops for him.

Thanks to the overflowing love his parents poured into his birthday, James loves birthdays. Spending his first one away from his parents during his first year at wizarding school was tough, but he received loads of gifts and a massive letter, proving that even from a distance, it was still an incredibly special day.

In recent years, he's been celebrating with his best friends: Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew. They were also joined by other close pals, like Marlene MacKinnon (Gryffindor's chaser with him and Sirius and his childhood friend), the Ravenclaw Killian Radcliffe (A Muggle-born he met in Diagon Alley and who helped him get out of some trouble or get into some, and was particularly close to Remus) or Sirius's little brother, Regulus Black, along with a bunch of other Gryffindor mates. But being with his inner circle was what mattered most. Being with those he loved and who cared for him.

On 1976, James was gearing up for another epic day. Besides being his birthday, it was also the day of the last match before the Quidditch Cup Final, and he was already gunning to clinch the cup for Gryffindor.

"Happy birthday, Captain!" Sirius beamed, leaping onto his bed and pulling him into a hug.

James chuckled, returning the embrace from his best mate.

"Ready to clinch that victory as my birthday gift, Padfoot?"

"After a decent breakfast, maybe. Just rolled out of bed," he groaned theatrically, flopping down onto Potter's pillow.

"Then get yourself ready for some grub," James instructed, playfully shoving his friend off the bed and onto the floor.

"Ouch! Trying to take out your better chaser just hours before the match?"

"At first, I'm the better chaser," he quipped, with an air of cocky confidence. "Secondly, I want that gorgeous trophy in our Common Room and an excuse for a massive bash."

"And we're off to James Potter's competitive streak at seven-thirty in the morning," Remus remarked sarcastically, emerging from the bathroom with his dark-blond hair tousled from towel-drying. "Good morning, birthday boy!"

"Morning, Moony! Ready to root for us?"

Lupin rolled his eyes and sighed, unable to hold back a chuckle as he nodded along. Quidditch and James Potter's birthday on the same day was a mix of excitement and nerves for that room.

"I'm betting Gryffindor will take it, Prongs!" Peter chimed in from his bed, still clad in his red pajamas. "Ravenclaw doesn't stand a chance."

"Absolutely not. We've put in too much work for today, and I'll relish in showing off our Quidditch Cup to the Radcliffe twins."

"They've put in some serious work too. It won't be a walk in the park."

"No negativity, Moony!"

"Just stating the facts. I've seen their practices."

"Traitor! Sirius, we need a new Marauder."

"Weren't you the one itching to leave just now, James? Better not dilly-dally," Remus quipped, tapping his index finger on his wrist as if indicating a watch.

Remus was spot on, as usual. He was the voice of reason in that group, no doubt about it.

James got up and geared up for breakfast and another match. He exited the dormitory sporting his Gryffindor sweater, already rallying the team and issuing some instructions on the way to the Great Hall.

In the corridor leading to the Great Hall, Potter spotted the Ravenclaw captain alongside her twin brother, both ace players and formidable rivals of his and Sirius's on the field. He could seize the moment to tease them before the game, showing Killian and Karina just how hungry he was for victory, how his birthday only fueled his desire to win, and that they stood no chance against his team. He felt the urge to do it, maybe even use the fact that the girl had injured her wrist a few months ago to dampen their spirits.

However, the urge to speak to the boy draped in a dark cloak alongside the Ravenclaws, adorned in outrageously expensive wizarding attire with flowing wavy hair and piercing gray-blue eyes, was overwhelming. James completely lost track of his team when he spotted him, their eyes locking at him in that corridor.

He halted before reaching the Great Hall, instructing his team to go on ahead and fuel up before receiving further guidance. He watched as Sirius conversed with the boy at the hall's entrance, likely inquiring if he'd be rooting for him, given he was his younger sibling.

The moment the Ravenclaw captain used her oversized parchment of game strategies rolled up to whack on the Sirius' head, the boy chuckled and said something before breaking away from them and heading towards James.

As he caught up to Potter, James stepped back and led him to another corridor, far from the Great Hall, with him trailing behind. Once they arrived and he turned to face him, he swiftly grabbed him around the waist and pressed their lips together, leaning against the wall, causing a laugh as he encircled his neck with his arms.

"Did you really have to lead me to another corridor so far away, Potter? There are plenty of discreet spots much closer."

"I just wanted to greet my boyfriend without any interruptions," James replied, holding his waist more firmly. "Aren't you forgetting something?"

"Am I?" he teased, with a smirk and raised eyebrow.

"Regulus Arcturus Black, don't tease me."

Regulus chuckled again and planted a lingering kiss on James's lips.

"Happy birthday, James Potter.”

James beamed widely, lightly brushing his nose against Regulus's before nuzzling into his neck, inhaling the sweet scent of Black as they embraced tightly. It felt amazing to feel Regulus's warmth in the morning, to receive that familiar hug from someone he cared deeply about on such a joyous and significant day. James was incredibly happy on that birthday, especially being able to call Regulus Black his boyfriend and have him by his side in a different way than in previous years.

He hoped that this would be just the first of many birthdays where he could feel that warmth and share kisses with him.

"I know how much you love your birthday and how match days always make you anxious, so... Are you okay?" Regulus asked, guiding his hands to Potter's hair and giving it a gentle stroke as he lifted his face.

"Happy and confident," James affirmed, smiling with closed eyes, relishing in the caress. "Especially if you'll be cheering for me."

"Will you break up with me if I say I won't?"

James opened his eyes instantly, assuming a serious expression. Regulus must be joking with him.

"Don't give me that look. They're my best friends playing."

"And I'm your boyfriend."

Regulus raised an eyebrow as he locked eyes with Potter. “Was ditching my friends a clause in the dating contract?”

"Your brother is playing too! What about the whole family unity thing?"

"Are you talking about 'family unity' with a Black, James?"

James sighed and made a face at the thought of the not-so-close and noble Black family. He knew well enough how individualistic they were and how they prioritized duty, legacy, and blood above all else, even familial affection. He couldn't picture Regulus and Sirius growing up in such an environment, though it explained a lot about their behavior when they arrived at school.

The closest thing to genuine affection that family knew was Sirius and Regulus, inseparable brothers since childhood who looked out for each other; or the affection that Alphard Black had for his favorite nephews. The Black brothers, indeed, had always been united, from the moment nearly two-year-old Sirius met the beautiful newborn Regulus. He did everything for his younger brother from that moment on, shielding him from their parents' endless fights and their mother's scoldings. They couldn't imagine anything that could tear them apart.

Sirius bolting from home at Christmas had undoubtedly strained their relationship, but they were still brothers, and he was there for Regulus whenever he needed him. James played a pivotal role in this scenario, welcoming the eldest Black at his house and consoling the youngest, assuring him he was safe and always welcome in his home to see his brother... Or join him.

Sadly, Regulus lacked the same courage as Sirius to break away from his family. Yet, having James by his side comforted his heart and cleared his mind of those worries. They stood together, supporting each other, and that's what truly mattered.

James harbored a deep hate for all the Blacks, save for his boyfriend, his best friend, and their uncle. He never voiced it aloud in Regulus's presence, knowing that, despite everything, he still cared them... But he didn't need to. He knew.

It's challenging to mask your thoughts when you're with a legilimens.

"Hey, I was just messing with you!" Regulus said, continuing to caress his boyfriend's hair. "I didn't mean for you to start dwelling on how much you hate my family and their behavior."

"Sorry," James said with a slight, sincere smile, reaching to cup Black's face. "It's hard not to when I can see how much it affects Sirius and you."

"I'm fine, really."

"I may not have Legilimency like you, but I can still tell when you're not being completely honest."

"I know... And I don't want to hide anything from you. But trust me, I'm fine , hm? Today is your day, let's not talk about me and my family."

"Okay," Potter agreed, delicately caressing Regulus's cheek while locking eyes with him.

That gray eyes always sparkled like stars in the sky. James loved to observe them up close every day and never grew tired of it, not for a single moment. It was there that he could see all the affection and sweetness overflowing from Black's heart, even if he tried to hide it. Seeing those eyes was all he needed to feel good, relaxed, free from worries. No matter how much time passed, or even how many lives he had... He would always love gazing into those enchanting eyes and live for them. He repeated this to himself every day when he was with his lover.

"Why do you always randomly think about my eyes?" Regulus suddenly asked.

James chuckled. He was always caught off guard when Regulus echoed his thoughts.

"You need to improve your control over reading people's minds."

"And you need to protect your thoughts," Regulus retorted, then he shrugged, embarrassed. "Sorry, I can't always help it..."

"I know, Reggie. No need to apologize," James said, drawing their faces even closer together. "And I always think about your eyes because they are perfect, just like you.”

Regulus smiled weakly, his cheeks immediately gaining a reddish hue. James liked these reactions to his compliments, knowing that he affected Regulus as much as Regulus affected him, knowing that their hearts beat strongly in the same intensity. James also smiled and noticed the sigh that escaped Black's lips.

"Can I now give my boyfriend another big hug and get a good luck kiss?" he asked in a low voice that sent shivers down the Regulus’ spine.

"As many as you want," Regulus replied.

James didn't hesitate to press his lips against Regulus's in a long, tender kiss and wrap his arms around his waist, as if he couldn't let go or he would lose him. And Regulus quickly returned, holding onto Potter's shoulders as his feet left the ground. Potter gave several pecks to his boyfriend, then trailing the kisses to his cheek and neck while squeezing him in that hug, and Regulus's laughter echoed through the corridor.

He loved hearing that laughter and hated how rare it was sometimes.

"You're very happy today," Regulus commented, laughing.

"You know I love my birthday. And now I have a beautiful boyfriend to celebrate with me."

Boyfriend . That word was still strange to them. On one hand, because of Regulus's fear that his parents would surely kill him when they found out—and Sirius would probably kill James. On the other hand, they felt like the happiest and luckiest people in the world to have each other.

Since they kissed at the Hogwarts’ Birthday Ball not long ago, they couldn't ignore their feelings anymore and stay away from each other. James feared Sirius's reaction upon finding out he was interested in his little brother, whom he protected so much, but he also couldn't stand to look at Regulus and feel his heart beat so strongly, as it only happened in his presence.

The young Black freaked out with the kiss, after all, he had feelings for Potter for some time. Not in James's presence, of course. James only found out because Killian commented on how strange Regulus was acting and heard him talk to his sister and Pandora about someone he liked and had kissed at the ball — and how much he wished good luck to the guy who would have Sirius on his tail when he found out.

James never thanked so much for making friends with such a gossiping Ravenclaw who couldn't keep his mouth shut.

He handed Regulus a note through his owl to meet on the same day. And it was in the Astronomy Tower that night, while they watched the stars and talked, that James asked Regulus to be his boyfriend. They had been together ever since, enjoying every second they could spend together.

James was very proud to say that Regulus Arcturus Black was his boyfriend, even though it hadn't been said aloud yet.

"Good luck in the match"

"Thanks," he chirped. "But don't reckon I won't be needin' another kisses for good luck before we kick off, hm?"

"I'll consider it, Potter," Regulus said, stepping away. "We'd better head to breakfast. Evan and Barty will notice my delay. You'll need all the strength you can muster for this match, especially since Karina is determined to thrash you today."

"Let her try. I'll win this match and defeat you in the final."

"I'll be looking forward to that.”

***

Regulus was caught between planning his boyfriend's birthday surprise and hearing his friends yap about wanting to wreck him that day.

He's a Quidditch enthusiast with a cracking competitive streak, so he's top-notch at both, though he'd rather focus on how to keep his brother from being glued to James for the rest of the night so he could snatch some alone time with him.

They couldn't keep the secret for much longer, but today's definitely not the day to tell. Sirius' drama would probably trash the whole celebratory vibe.

Sirius flipped just finding out he kissed Killian in a Truth or Dare on Evan and Pandora's birthday in the Room of Requirement with just their posh clique of Slytherin and Ravenclaw mates. He fought with the boy for daring to kiss his little brother after he and his friends so graciously let him help with a prank last year. And Killian not exactly being fond of Sirius didn't help the moment either. It was a right mess and cringe-worthy. Only Remus managed to sort out the row.

And being a Legilimens, Regulus obviously knew the reason for the Ravenclaw and his brother not getting along, and the reason was precisely the toweringly tall boy with skin marked by scars devouring a chocolate bar at that very moment.

That was the downside — for some, upside — of being born a Legilimens and not always being able to control it: tuning into the love dramas of Hogwarts through other people's thoughts. It was fun to play around with and gossip with Pandora and Evan, but exhausting to hear it in his head every day, especially when he interacted daily with people involved in those dramas.

Although he could use it to distract Sirius during the night. His brother's mind was already chaotic on its own, but when it came to his werewolf friend... Regulus got a headache just being around him.

Promising.

"What's that evil mind of yours scheming now, Regulus?" Killian inquired with his strong Irish accent. "You're quieter than usual, and that's your 'I'm thinking of something' face."

"It's a bit tricky to think while I'm hearing so many fervent thoughts about Quidditch."

"This game will decide our Final, we need to think carefully," Evan said. He was wearing his Slytherin sweater, but his cheeks were painted with the colours of Ravenclaw. "I won't allow Gryffindor to get there, even if I have to help the enemy."

"We also have an enemy right here who could ruin everything," Barty pointed at Remus.

"Shut it, Crouch," Killian snapped irritably. "Who invited you here?"

Barty draped his arm over Evan's shoulders with a smirk.

"My captain."

"I know how to play fair, Crouch. I ain't spillin' nobody's game plan, just keepin' an eye out”

"I trust Remus more than you, Crouch," Karina commented, standing next to the strategy board. "You're only here because I partnered with Evan to destroy Gryffindor and go to the Final together."

"He has his days of bad decisions. Honestly, Evan, teaming up with mudblo–..."

"Finish that sentence, and you won't like where I'm shoving my broomstick."

"Barty," Evan shot Crouch a reproachful look, who huffed and rolled his eyes.

"Back to my plans... Sorry, Reggie and Remmy, I'll break Sirius and James' bones if I have to."

"Don't worry, Sirius can handle it," Regulus smiled.

As Karina resumed speaking with her team and Evan, Regulus stealthily approached Remus, sitting beside him on the locker room bench. Lupin smiled kindly at him and offered the chocolate in his direction.

Regulus shrugged and accepted.

"What are my brother's plans for today?" he asked in a low tone.

"To win the game and throw a big party in the common room to celebrate the victory and James's birthday. He was planning to invite you."

"And if you lose?"

"That's not an option for him."

"But what if?"

"Probably cry in our room."

"I'm serious, Remus."

"So am I," he grinned playfully and chuckled.

Regulus rolled his eyes, but let out a quiet chuckle as well. Deep down, he got why Sirius and Killian couldn't get Lupin out of their heads. Maybe he'd even had a bit of a crush on him at some point, but he'd sooner fly on a hippogriff than admit it.

Handsome and kind despite being the odd one out. A Gryffindor, werewolf, towering with those scars that gave him a serious edge, how could he be one of the sweetest and most fun blokes he knew? They'd gotten close through their shared mates aside from Sirius. He wouldn't call them bosom buddies, but they kept things friendly. Regulus wondered how he could stomach being around his brother and his mates for so long.

And Remus appreciated Regulus's discretion for all the secrets he picked up as a Legilimens. He knew about the lycanthropy even before his brother did and never let on, nor mentioned how Lupin often thought about him and tried to push those thoughts away, focusing on other things — and boys, like a Ravenclaw Irish — feeling inadequate and not wanting to muck everything up... Regulus identified with some of those thoughts about James before they started dating.

"I honestly don't know what they'll do if they lose the match," Remus admitted. "I doubt I could talk them into going to the Ravenclaw party. Maybe we could sneak off to Hogsmeade to celebrate with James and take our minds off the loss.

Hogsmeade isn't an option. It wouldn't distract Sirius.

"I bet if you insist, they'll agree. It's a party anyway."

"You know Sirius and James. It's Quidditch!"

"Maybe they'll be so downcast that they won't even complain if you decide to go alone to the Ravenclaw party. You're definitely already invited."

"But it's James's birthday."

"He'll survive.”

Remus furrowed his brow, looking at him slightly suspiciously. Regulus noticed his distrust. Lupin wasn't a Legilimens, but he was extremely observant and attentive to details.

"I'll talk to them about the plans. Maybe James even wants some time alone for a while, defeats are frustrating," he smiled faintly and winked at him.

Oh, Regulus was in deep trouble...

"I know what you're thinking."

"And I don't want to know what you think I'm thinking."

"I'm a legilimens."

"And I'm great at keeping secrets and avoiding trouble," he took a bite of his chocolate.

***

The time for the big game had arrived, and the start of the match was drawing near.

James delivered his final instructions to the team before letting them prepare, with great excitement and confidence in their victory.

"Where's Moony? He said he'd meet us before the game," Sirius asked, clutching his broomstick and looking around for his friend.

"With the Ravenclaw team," Peter snitched, who was playing with a small plant, making it float and spin with his wand without looking at his friends. He pointed to an area near the stands where Lupin was speaking to the twin chasers along with Pandora and Regulus.

“Even my own brother's gone and betrayed me!" Black exclaimed dramatically, hand pressed to his chest. "RADCLIFFE, COULD YOU STOP STEAL MY BEST FRIEND AND MY BROTHER ON MATCH DAY, PLEASE?"

"FUCK YOU, BLACK!" the captain shouted back from a distance, her Irish accent ringing out, while flipping him the bird alongside her twin brother.

"As delicate as a bloody Cruciatus curse," he sighed.

Remus approached with Regulus shortly after. The Ravenclaw twins strutted past them with victorious and confident smiles, the boy lingering while his sister headed off to the other side of the pitch.

“Watch out for the Bludgers. Wouldn't want you ending up in the hospital wing again, Potter," Killian teased.

"I think you'd better watch yourself ," James fired back. "It wasn't me who spent three days with half my bones broken after falling off a broomstick."

"Me and my sister will. Thanks for the concern, much appreciated."

"Killian, you better go before Karina drags you there by your hair," Remus spoke up. "Save the taunting and bickering for later."

"I'll go now, Remmy," he agreed and smiled at Lupin, then turned to the two Gryffindor players. "See you after our victory party, when we'll officially be friends again."

"Slán, Killian," Lupin said with a firmer tone.

He planted a kiss on Remus's cheek and draped the Ravenclaw scarf he held around his neck. "Slán, Remmy."

James watched Sirius glare at Killian as if he were a bug he wanted to crush underfoot.

"Slán agus ádh mór!" Killian waved to the others and departed.

"I don't know what you said, but good riddance," Sirius shot back.

"Goodbye and good luck," Remus translated. "He always says that."

Sirius snatched the Ravenclaw scarf off Remus. "Irish is complicated.”

"You should try to learn a bit, it's not difficult," Regulus said to his brother. "I'm studying."

"Now you decide to come talk to me? After spending all this time with my enemies?"

Regulus rolled his eyes and placed a hand on his brother's shoulder.

“Good luck, you're going to need it."

"Very motivating, little brother," Sirius replied, tousling the other Black's hair and pulling him into a hug.

"I know you can make an effort," Regulus retorted, lightly patting Sirius's shoulder and then pushing him away. He turned to James, giving a slight smile. "Good game."

"Root for us, Reggie," Potter said, winking at him.

Madame Hooch called both teams to start the match in five minutes. Remus and Peter wished their friends good luck before leaving, and Regulus was about to head to the Slytherin stands, but was stopped by James. Sirius had already joined the rest of the team.

"You owe me one more kiss."

"We don't want you to be late. I'll think about it after the match.”

Regulus winked at his boyfriend, who smiled mischievously in response. Then they both turned their backs to each other and went their separate ways, but not without looking back and exchanging one last glance.

James joined the team and encouraged them to give it their all. He spoke sternly to all of them, but there was still a hint of joy and excitement in his voice.

"Let's crush them," he said to everyone before they headed to the center of the pitch.

The two teams positioned themselves facing each other. The Gryffindor captain and the Ravenclaw captain both had an upright and firm posture, a clear display of leadership and power, with a hint of egocentrism from the assurance of victory on both sides. They stared at each other with competitive fury, a silent and restrained battle of strength.

That was one hell of a brutal match, with shoves, Bludgers to the head, and full-on brawls. It was a bloody brawl for the last spot in the Final.

James almost fell out his broomstick a few times, which only pissed them off even more. Remus was narrating the match with gusto, but even his flawless articulation and sharp eyes couldn't keep up with every move and attack.

Karina lunged at Marlene and knocked the Quaffle right out of her grip, sending it straight into Killian's hands. He darted toward the hoops and slammed another ten points home. Sirius started hollering and cussing at the lad, but the game pressed on.

"SIRIUS!" James hollered for his mate, who zoomed over to him in a flash.

"What's the word, Captain?"

"Do you reckon we'll cop a serious penalty if we knock Killian off his broom and snap a few of his bones?"

"Not if it looks like just an unfortunate mishap in the heat of a brutal Quidditch match.”

"Great, then no mercy with him. Marlene, focus on Karina!"

"Got it, Captain!" Marlene agreed.

"They won't show mercy either," Sirius said.

"No pain, no gain, Padfoot," James said in a firm and serious tone. "BEATERS, NO MERCY, TAKE THEM DOWN!"

"Yes, Captain!" the beaters replied in unison.

"Let's crush these fools and bring the Cup home to Gryffindor!”

***

James sat on a bed in the hospital wing, drenched after almost drowning himself in the locker room shower while holding an ice pack to his head.

"I can't believe we lost. My first year as captain and I already failed," he lamented in frustration. "I'm going to curse those idiot Ravenclaws, thieves of Quidditch cups, sons of a bi—"

"You did great, James. There will be other matches," Regulus interrupted the string of curses and tried to console him.

The end of the game didn't go as the captain had hoped. They did indeed crush the Ravenclaws and sent three of them to the hospital wing, but James, Sirius, and one Gryffindor beater also ended up there after the game, defeated bitterly.

290 vs 120. So close to a tie and overtaking them... But the Ravenclaw seeker was faster and scored an additional 150 points — twisting his wrist in the process.

Half of both teams were in the hospital wing after an intense and heated match, but it was Ravenclaw who would face Slytherin in the Final in April.

"You're gonna grab that Snitch in the Final and kick those stuck-up Ravenclaws' butts... Ow!" James exclaimed to Regulus, but he got a bit too excited and a sharp pain shot through his head, hitting him like a Bludger.

"James Potter cheering for Slytherin to win, what a surprise!" Remus said sarcastically, standing by the bed where Sirius was, his leg in a cast.

"All to see the Ravenclaws' faces when they lose."

"It's up to you to defend our honor, Reggie," Sirius said firmly to his younger brother. "We're relying on your Seeker skills."

"I'll defend my House, not yours. You lost, deal with it."

James pouted, still frustrated about losing the game and not being able to take on his boyfriend's team.

"Gryffindors have a tough time swallowing defeat, Reggie," said a female voice with a familiar accent.

James glared in her direction with fire in his eyes.

"You injured my best Beater!" he accused, pointing at the Ravenclaw captain who approached with her arm in a cast. "Thanks to you, I took two Bludgers to the head."

"I thought your reflexes would be better, James. You're 'the best player at Hogwarts'," she air quoted with her good hand.

"And let's not forget that your dear brother broke my leg," Sirius chimed in, pointing to his injured leg.

"What do you want here? Wasn't it enough to steal my chance to win the cup?"

"Steal? It was a fair victory."

"It was my chance!"

"What chance? Your strategy is good, but not as good as mine."

"We could have won if you played fair, without Muggle sports tricks!" grumbled Sirius. "We came so close and look how they left us! I won't be able to walk straight!"

James chuckled at the remark and glanced at his friend. "You never walk straight, Padfoot."

"Fuck you, James.”

"Oh, are you going to cry, Little Star?" Karina teased with a forced tone of fake sadness and a pout on her lips, using her uninjured hand to ironically wipe away a nonexistent tear.

"I wouldn't doubt it," Regulus said.

"Hey! You're my brother, you're supposed to be on my side."

"Sorry if you're too attached to outdated strategies and resistant to new ideas," the girl said. "Quidditch might seem a lot like football, but with broomsticks and fewer rules against aggression, just advantages. I adapted some strategies from our best teams, nothing against the rules. Be creative if you want to win."

"And that's why you ended up in Ravenclaw instead of Gryffindor," Remus remarked, and she smiled victoriously. "How's Killian?"

"Thankfully. And Killian just woke up from passing out."

"Get out of here!" James ordered, shooing her away.

"The hospital wing isn't yours, Potter. Less ego, because you're rich, but not the owner of Hogwarts," she retorted. "I came to talk to Remus."

"He's with us," Sirius impatiently interjected.

"What are you doing out of bed, Radcliffe? Get back in there!" Madame Pomfrey approached in a flurry. "You always give me trouble on match days."

"It'll be quick, Madame Pomfrey..."

"No, no, back in bed now."

The girl huffed, walking to the other side of the ward and returning to the bed next to her brother, who also had an ice pack on his head and his foot elevated on a stack of pillows, quite swollen.

"And all of you crowded in here, out you go too. They need rest. Come on!" the mediwitch began to usher all the visitors out.

"But Madame..." Regulus attempted to contest.

"Tonight your brother will be better and can see you. Everyone out."

James sighed, whining softly as he looked at Regulus. He didn't want him to leave.

"And no fighting between you all. No getting out of bed or picking on each other!" Pomfrey addressed all the present players.

She waved her wand, and several hospital screens shuffled around the occupied beds, isolating all the patients from each other. Complaints were heard but soon quieted under the mediwitch's orders.

Potter took a pain potion that left him feeling drowsy. This birthday certainly wasn't turning out as good as he had hoped; everything changed with just one Quidditch match. His joy had gone down the drain, and he couldn't even have his boyfriend to cheer him up.

He wanted Regulus . Losing the match had already been disheartening and humiliating enough; being without his boyfriend and unable to talk to Sirius beside him was terrible. He was super confident that morning, already imagining winning the match and celebrating in the common room with his Gryffindor friends and colleagues—a big party, opening several gifts, and then ending the day with Regulus.

All plans ruined. Thinking like this might seem a bit dramatic, but James always had high expectations for his birthday. His parents always did everything to make it the best day, a day when nothing could go wrong. Even far from his family, it had always been one of the best days of the year.

In his second year, he and his friends celebrated in the Hogwarts gardens with a big afternoon picnic. Regulus was also there, next to his brother, a bit shy.

In their third year, they all sneaked off to Hogsmeade and had a party at the Three Broomsticks with a cake and plenty of butterbeer. Sirius convinced his brother to sneak out that day and introduced him to the village even though he was still in his second year.

The year before that, they escaped to the village again, but this time they went to a secluded area where there was a lake they had found and stayed there all afternoon. He, Peter, Marlene, Mary, and Killian spent much of the time swimming. Sirius and Remus couldn't swim, but they risked getting in, clinging to their friends who knew how, and James even started teaching Black.

He remembered inviting Regulus to join them in the water many times, but as he also couldn't swim, the boy vehemently refused and just watched. Young Black was radiant sitting on the towel with a book, the sun hitting his face and accentuating his glow, making him even more enchanting in Potter's eyes.

On his last birthday, James was beginning to see Regulus in a new light, seeing him beyond just his best friend's little brother, recognizing him as the beautiful and intelligent boy he was, owner of a brilliant smile he didn't show to everyone and even brighter eyes. Sirius always tried to help his brother to integrate with his friends and be close to them, but none of them expected Potter to end up getting so close to him.

James couldn't even imagine his friend's reaction when he finally told him.

A good part of that birthday had already been ruined now that he was condemned to the hospital wing for the rest of the day, because he knew the mediwitch well enough to know she wouldn't release him anytime soon. It wouldn't be as good as the others, he was starting to convince himself of that.

He didn't realize when he dozed off, only that when he woke up, someone was holding his hand and stroking his hair. As he opened his eyes, somewhat dazed, he found the sparkling blue-gray ones that dominated his dreams along with a warm smile.

His vision was very blurry because he was without his glasses, but he could still recognize the color of those eyes anywhere. He could easily be mistaken for Sirius because the Blacks were eerily similar, but his friend wouldn't be so close to him in that way.

Regulus placed the glasses on his face, knowing that he was about to reach for them to see better. Soon his vision was much clearer and he could properly appreciate the face in front of him.

His heart immediately warmed, and a faint smile spread across his lips. Waking up and seeing those beautiful eyes was like being in paradise.

Regulus raised an eyebrow. "Paradise? Seriously, James?" His voice was low, almost a whisper.

"I just woke up. Too early to be reading my mind, love,” he countered in response, equally low and with a slightly hoarse voice.

"Sorry, but... Seriously, have you been reading too many romance books with Remus?"

"Can't I have romantic thoughts about my boyfriend?"

"You're a very exaggerated romantic."

"Don't you think the same about me, Estrellita?"

James didn't need to be a Legilimens to know what Regulus was thinking; his eyes said it all.

“How do you feel?”  he asked, changing the subject.

“I'm okay” James replied, taking Black's hand, bringing it to his lips, and planting a kiss on it while squeezing it tightly. “Mostly because you're here.”

Regulus smiled at the response, squeezing his hand back.

“I'm glad you're okay.”

“Why are we whispering?”

“Sirius is awake. Do you want him to hear me calling you my boyfriend and come give you a cast like his?”

*No, the Bludgers were enough for today” he understood and chuckled softly. "Did Madame Pomfrey let you in?"

Regulus pressed his lips together and glanced away. His cheeks quickly acquired a reddish hue, revealing his guilt.

"Regulus Black breaking the rules of his own free will. What a memorable moment," James teased.

Regulus hid his face in his free hand. "I'm starting to regret this."

"I adore you, you know?" James responded, smiling broadly.

Black smiled back, blushing even more.

"So you're going to stay here with me?"

"If you want me to."

"Of course, I want you to. Come up here."

James stepped back to make room for Black on the bed. Regulus hesitated for a moment, looking at James, but then he sat on the bed, and Potter wrapped his arms around his waist, resting his head on his chest.

"Is it too early for me to continue mourning my defeat?"

"James!" Regulus laughed a little too loudly and quickly covered his mouth, widening his eyes. There followed a few moments of silence, but no reaction came from Sirius.

James pressed his lips together to suppress a laugh as he watched the younger one's reaction. He took Regulus's wand from his pocket, waving it in front of him. Black quickly grabbed it.

" Muffiato ," Regulus murmured. "There, now no one will be able to hear."

"What silencing spell is that?" James asked, confused, as he didn't recognize that spell. He wasn't whispering anymore.

"Severus taught me. It's good for private conversations that no one should hear.”

Potter immediately grimaced with disgust and displeasure upon hearing that name. He simply couldn't stand even hearing the name Severus Snape, his Slytherin archenemy since the Hogwarts Express in their first year.

He found him to be an extremely loathsome, arrogant, selfish, self-centred, clueless, and many other more offensive designations.

"Merlin's beard, James! I just said his name!" Regulus exclaimed horrified.

"You know I hate that guy, the worst kind of Slytherin," he retorted in an irritated tone. "Honestly, I'd prefer Radcliffe's nagging to that greasy-haired moron who doesn't know what shampoo is because his hair is so oily."

"She said the same thing about him, can you believe it? You're have something in common, both hates Snape."

"I only tolerate her because I'm friends with her brother."

"So friendly that you almost killed each other on the field."

"Friends, friends, Quidditch aside," he quoted.

Black suppressed a laugh, shaking his head disapprovingly.

"I've never seen such a violent game. You were really determined to play against me in the Final, huh?"

"I like you a lot, but I would love to defeat your team in the most humiliating way possible and win the Quidditch Cup."

"How loving of you, Jamie."

"But since I won't be able to, I'll be rooting for Slytherin."

"Now that's a historic moment! Better announce it in the Daily Prophet," Regulus joked.

"Well... You are my boyfriend. And I want to see the Ravenclaws humiliated."

Regulus laughed and stayed by Potter's side, snuggling closer to him. He stroked James's hair, who now had a big pout on his lips once again, just like right after the defeat.

"Worst birthday ever."

"Where's all that excitement from earlier today?"

"Your friends stole it along with my victory."

"Look on the bright side," said Regulus. "You get to cheer for your handsome boyfriend, the Seeker, here."

James laughed, locking eyes with Black.

"I'll cheer with all my heart and shower you with good luck kisses. That would have helped me."

"Are you going to blame me now for not kissing you again before the game?"

"No... If you kiss me now."

"Manipulative..."

"I'm feeling low. A little kiss will make me feel much better," he dramatized.

Regulus smiled gently, cupped Potter's face, and pressed their lips together in a quick kiss. It did indeed make him feel a bit better. Regulus Black always made James feel better.

"I didn't win the game today, but I can win cuddles and affection from my boyfriend."

Regulus laughed again, agreeing, his face slightly flushed. It was James's turn to snuggle up to his boyfriend, resting his head on his shoulder as Black continued to stroke his hair. Potter loved receiving that affection.

They remained together for a while longer, talking about nothing in particular, just enjoying each other's company. Occasionally, they kissed each other lightly. James loved kissing his boyfriend.

In summary: James loved everything about Regulus. Everything he was, everything he did, everything he meant.

When Madame Pomfrey began to check on other students, Regulus got off the bed, much to James's dismay, who no longer felt the warmth of his boyfriend beside him.

"Regulus? What are you doing here?" Pomfrey questioned as she approached James and found him there.

"Just visiting my brother and James, Madame," Regulus replied, his hands clasped behind his back and his usual perfect posture. "I'm sorry, I know you told me to come back later and not disturb them, but I was quite worried."

The mediwitch eyed them suspiciously but said nothing. She released James to go, and Regulus discreetly undid his spell before she could notice.

"Are you still having headaches, Regulus?" Madame Pomfrey inquired.

"I'm feeling better now, Madame Pomfrey. Thank you for your concern," Regulus replied politely.

"You didn't tell me it was hurting again, Reggie," James said, sounding worried.

"It's normal when I'm agitated... Or in the midst of a lot of agitation and strong emotions, you know. Disadvantages of a born Legilimens still in training. Sirius gets the same way when he loses control."

"Sirius wasn't born a Legilimens, he was born with a high predisposition for Legilimency and has a knack for absorbing and releasing strong emotions. It's different," James explained.

"I'm not the patient of the day. I'm perfectly fine now," Regulus insisted.

James didn't fully trust it, but he didn't press the matter further.

***

Regulus waited nervously in front of the portrait in the Gryffindor Tower. When James emerged from there, his heart almost leapt out of his chest because of how handsome he looked.

They spent some time together after leaving the hospital wing, and then James went back to the common room, where he opened all his presents while Regulus prepared a surprise and sent a note via his owl.

He had a great idea to celebrate his boyfriend's birthday, just the two of them. So, he put his plan into action when Madame Pomfrey informed him of Sirius's early release — too early to Regulus's displeasure.

Remus was invited by the Ravenclaw twins to the party they were having in their tower, as expected, when they were released from the hospital wing. Lupin was still hesitant to go, of course. So, at his first opportunity, Regulus approached him alone.

"I know what you're up to, Regulus, but I'm not going to celebrate while Sirius is still in the hospital wing, even if Killian insists," Remus stated firmly.

Regulus sighed. Sirius and Remus would still give him plenty of headaches as they made excuses to be close to each other while denying their own feelings, and even more so with the Ravenclaw boy involved in the mix.

Sacrifices need to be made.

"Sirius will be there for the rest of the night to do something, and you know Madame Pomfrey doesn't like people who don't need to be there. And James is clearly too frustrated with the defeat to want to celebrate his birthday," Regulus continued.

"Except if it's with you," Remus countered.

"I have no idea what you're talking about," Regulus replied, feigning ignorance.

Remus chuckled softly and crossed his arms. "Of course you don't."

"We have a friendly thing going on here, right? You're cool, Remus, you deserve some fun, and I want to see you enjoy yourself. And Killian will give me a headache if you don't come," Regulus reasoned.

"I'll think about it. I have to go see Sirius while I still can," Remus said, starting to walk away.

"You know, I think you're right, Sirius would definitely hate it if you went to the party, so maybe it's best not to mention anything to him," Regulus called after him, a mischievous glint in his eyes.

Remus frowned and turned back to Black once again.

"Regulus..."

"You know my brother. After this defeat, he won't even want to hear the word Ravenclaw anywhere near him."

"I know..." he agreed with a sigh.

He was getting through to him. Regulus tried not to smile.

"And I'm serious, Remus. Maybe I'll even drop by there, and we can meet in front of your common room. I'm sure James won't want to stop a friend from having fun; he's not as dramatic as Sirius."

And with that, there was Regulus at the entrance of Ravenclaw, talking to his friend.

"Convinced Remus to go, definitely," Regulus said.

"Really?" Killian smiled.

Heavens! That was truly pathetic.

If all went well, that mess would end that night. One side would definitely be hurt, but there was no escape. Regulus had grown tired of telling his friend that it wasn't him Remus often thought about.

The last part: Sirius .

Regulus knows his brother's mind, literally. He knows how he reacts to different situations, knows how to provoke reactions from him, which is why their fights were always so heated. And he knows how Remus messes with that chaotic mind. He just needed a little push to finally bring out everything that's going on in his head.

If he had to be a cupid for his brother for to be alone with James, he would. And thinking long term, in the best-case scenario, Sirius would be too busy with Remus to even look at him and James.

Only advantages. Sirius might thank him in the future.

"No fucking way in hell I'm going to the Ravenclaw party, Regulus. They're your friends, not mine," Sirius stated firmly.

"I make a lot of effort to get along with yours ," Regulus retorted.

"It's different; they humiliated me today. No. Later on, Madame Pomfrey will release me, and we'll celebrate James's birthday."

Regulus frowned and tilted his head.

"But Remus is going to the party, Killian just told me. He's going shortly before you're released, actually, since James is feeling a bit down because of the defeat."

And mission accomplished.

Sirius's expression darkened even more, thoughts racing through his mind. The idea of Remus at the party, the possibility of him being with someone else there. He would probably do something.

Regulus Cupid Black had achieved his first major feat.

"Tell James or Peter to bring my jacket and my makeup. Now!"

Regulus had never been happier to deliver a message from his brother to his friends, and Peter was quick to fulfill the request.

And there he was now, facing James, who looked handsome in a red long-sleeved shirt and worn-out jeans.

James smiled upon seeing him and made sure the hallway was empty before kissing him. Regulus immediately melted into his arms and had to muster all his effort not to whimper for more when he pulled away.

"That jumper looks better on you than it does on me," James complimented, and Regulus felt his cheeks burning.

He was wearing the jumper James had left with him before the Christmas holidays when they were both in the Astronomy Tower. He had been feeling sad and down that week after realizing that Sirius was contemplating running away from home because he couldn't bear the idea of another holiday with the family, and James found him there, as he noticed how suddenly distant he was from Sirius and knew how much he liked to see the stars there. Then it started to get too cold. He lent the sweater he was wearing to the boy and didn't insist on it being returned.

It was a bit big on him, as Regulus was shorter and slimmer, but he didn't mind. Wearing it and smelling James's scent was like being hugged by him.

"I wanted something comfortable this time... And I like it. You'll want it back, won't you?"

"It's yours now. You look lovely in it.”

Regulus blushed even more. They might have been dating for a month and a half, but James's charm still shook all of Black's structures and made him easily embarrassed.

"Wait... You're wearing jeans?" James asked, surprised.

"Pandora said they would go better with the jumper and lent them to me," Regulus shrugged. "They're comfortable, actually."

"You look perfect."

James laughed and stole another kiss from him.

"I have a birthday surprise for you."

James's eyes lit up. "What is it?!"

"It wouldn't be a surprise if I told you. Tonight, you'll be all mine."

"I told Remus it was okay for him to go to the Ravenclaw party, but Sirius..."

"He won't bother us tonight."

"What did you do, Regulus?"

"You'll probably find out tomorrow morning, but I bet Sirius will also have a memorable night.”

"And you're going to ditch this big party to be with me. I'm feeling very flattered," James said.

"It's your birthday, isn't it? And James Potter's birthday is always a big day.”

"It's not every day we'd have a James Fleamont Potter in the world, now is it? It'd be a grand celebration," the couple heard the heavily accented voice say.

They quickly turned around and saw Killian approaching, limping slightly, wearing his Ravenclaw sweater along with a leather jacket. He carried a gift box in his hand and extended it towards the birthday boy.

"Gift from me and me sister for your birthday and commiseration for the grand defeat that sent Gryffindor to third place.”

"Thank you," James said, accepting the gift. "Enjoy it while you can, because next year I'm going to win."

"Dream on, Potter," the boy replied, the pronunciation of the "T" sound much stronger and drawn out than they normally speak. "End game, for now. Friends again?"

"Friends again.”

They fist-bumped each other lightly. Then Killian jumped onto Potter, hugging him and kissing his cheek.

"Breithlá sona duit!"

"Thank you...? That's 'happy birthday,' right?"

"Correct!" he confirmed. "You can come to our Ravenclaw party if you want. Celebrate your day, no hard feelings."

"I already have plans, but Moony is going, and maybe Peter."

"Speaking of my favorite gryffindor, look who's here!"

Remus emerged from the portrait entrance, dressed in his usual blue cardigan and worn-out jeans.

"Hi”

"Good evening to you too, Remmy. Tonight, I won't let you leave the party early,"

"We'll see about that."

"My foot is killing me after climbing all these stairs; you're giving me a lift back," Killian said, hopping onto Remus's back.

Lupin began to swear in Irish and grumble.

"Have fun!" Regulus waved.

"Have a lovely romantic night," Killian said, clinging to Lupin to avoid falling off his back. "I'll want to hear all about it later, Archie. Come on, Remus!"

"See you later," Remus bid farewell. "Enjoy your time with Regulus, Prongs. We'll have lots to talk about later."

"W-we're not... I-I'm going to..." James started to stutter, but they were already leaving.

"Slán!" Killian waved to them.

They walked towards the Ravenclaw Tower, and James turned to his boyfriend.

"How do they know?" he asked.

"Maybe we weren't as discreet as we thought," Regulus replied.

"Sirius..."

"If he knew, he would've already killed you."

"We need to figure out how to tell him as soon as possible."

"We'll worry about that later. Ready to go?"

"I'll put away this gift and grab my invisibility cloak," James said.

Regulus agreed. James quickly stored the present and then returned to his boyfriend. He stood in front of Regulus, facing away from him, and crouched slightly.

"What are you doing?" Regulus asked.

"I'm going to carry you wherever you want to go," James said.

"You don't have to..."

"Come on, Reggie. It'll be fun."

Regulus pondered for a few moments before accepting. He climbed onto his boyfriend's back and wrapped his arms around his shoulders, holding on tightly to avoid falling. He began to dictate the path, and James followed calmly.

The corridors were empty, as at that time everyone was gathered either in the Great Hall, their common rooms, or the Ravenclaw Tower celebrating, which left them with few concerns about being seen together. And if they were seen, they knew very well what to say to manipulate the story in their favor until they were ready to officially reveal their relationship.

Regulus used to be quite discreet, as that was what his family appreciated as a Black's quality, but around James and his brother, he felt a bit freer to not be as rigid in his actions as he learned at home. Although, of course, he still maintained much of his reserved personality and tried not to attract too much attention. He opened up more in his own way with them.

"One day, you'll repay me this and carry me," James said.

"I'll consider your case," Regulus replied, resting his head on his boyfriend's shoulder. James turned his head to look at him and smiled gently. "Next corridor on the left."

James furrowed his brow, recognizing the path, and turned his head to face him.

"Are we going to the Astronomy Tower?" Regulus didn't answer. "What have you got planned for us, hmm?"

"Surprise," was all Black said, and he received another smile from Potter and a sweet kiss on the tip of his nose.

"Love surprises.”

***

As James began to run through the corridors towards the Astronomy Tower, Regulus started laughing, holding onto him tighter to avoid falling.

He followed the familiar path with a bright glow on his face, energized by hearing the beautiful and joyful laughter of young Black, who didn't laugh so freely often. Potter loved making Regulus happy.

When they reached the tower, James climbed quickly, skipping a few steps. At the top, Regulus placed both hands over his eyes and began to guide him to avoid ending up back on the stairs with him or tripping over the stargazing instruments that were there.

Once he could stop, Potter eagerly waited for Regulus to get off his back and let him see what he had prepared. Black did a countdown before removing his hands from his eyes.

As he adjusted his glasses on his face, a wide, silly grin spread across James's face as he saw the blanket spread out on the floor with some pillows, a birthday cake, plates of treats, and bottles of butterbeer.

It reminded him a lot of when a month and a half ago he took Regulus there and also prepared several blankets and pillows for them to lie down and stargaze throughout the night. It was when he asked him to be his boyfriend, and the two of them stayed there until dawn just cuddling, finally as a couple.

"I... Thought it would be a good idea for us to admire the stars and have something to eat," Regulus said. "I thought it would cheer you up. I know how important your birthday is to you."

"I loved it, Reggie. I'm definitely much happier now."

Black smiled at the response. He took Potter's hand and led him to where everything was prepared, and they sat down together.

"Did you get everything from the kitchen?" James asked.

"Pandora helped me ask the house-elves for some things, your favorites. Did you like it?"

"Yeah! There's nothing better to end my birthday than eating and drinking butterbeer while admiring the stars," he smiled. "And the best part is, I have a star right by my side."

He reached his hand to the boy's face, caressing it gently. Regulus's face blushed again, and he smiled weakly and leaned in to kiss James. Usually it was James who took the initiative, but he was happy when Regulus did.

James held Black's face with both hands, keeping their lips glued together with great passion. When they parted, he joined them again in several kisses, just enjoying the moment when he could be alone with his boyfriend. He only stopped when he felt Regulus's hands on his chest and he withdrew cautiously, with flushed cheeks, burying his face in his shoulder shortly after.

He kissed his cheek affectionately, wrapping his arm over his shoulders and embracing him from the side, holding him close. Regulus hugged his torso and turned his eyes to the sky, where the stars were already appearing more and more.

Each grabbed a butterbeer and began to drink together, not letting go of each other. James started a conversation with some silly joke that elicited a laugh from his boyfriend, and they continued like that for a long time. They kissed, laughed, talked; enjoying the moment together.

That was their special place, where they both felt more than okay together, seeking comfort in each other. Since the previous school year, when Regulus and Sirius had a big fight and James took Regulus there to comfort him and help him unwind while Remus stayed with the other Black, it became the place where they always ended up together from time to time. Talking and admiring the stars.

When Regulus wasn't feeling well he knew he could find James there. And James would always be there for him.

"A kiss for your thoughts," James said after they had been silent for some time, lost in thought.

Long enough for him to grab the small notebook he carried tucked away with the invisibility cloak and start sketching a drawing of Regulus admiring the stars, as he was doing at the moment.

Black turned his eyes to his boyfriend.

"You'd kiss me even if I didn't say," he said.

"That's true," he admitted, then gave the boy a peck on the lips. "You always know what I'm thinking."

"Even if I weren't a Legilimens, I know you well enough to know that.”

James laughed, wrapping his arms around his boyfriend's waist and brushing the strands of hair away from his face with his other hand as he gazed into his eyes. He fixed his gaze on the other's, admiring the bright sparkle they held.

Once again, he got lost in the shining expanse of those eyes that seemed to hold as many stars as the sky itself. He never resisted when his gaze focused there; it was almost like a magnet that always drew his eyes to the gray irises.

The greatest connection between them had always been their gaze. Some said that eyes are the windows to the soul, and that's exactly how James felt. As if he could see Regulus's soul, and he could see his.

No matter how repetitive it might be to always think about it every time he looked into his eyes, it was the truth. He would never tire of thinking about it.

"Are you going to show me the drawing? As your inspiration model, I have the right to see my portraits," Regulus insisted.

"Only when I finish it," James replied, pressing the notebook against his chest.

"I'm not letting you leave without showing me."

"I didn't intend to leave so soon anyway." Potter kissed the tip of Regulus's nose.

"Can you recognize any constellations from here?" Regulus asked, without taking his eyes off James. They loved looking for constellations together."

"I'm not an expert in stars and constellations like your family, but I had a great teacher, so…" James replied, smiling, then looked up at the sky.

Potter observed those various bright dots, similar to the ones he seemed to see in Black's eyes. It wasn't easy to think of exact shapes, as they all seemed like random bright spots of paint splattered on a dark canvas. He had done this once before to paint a night sky on a canvas he gave to his mother as a birthday present, using one of the canvases she had bought for them to pass the time painting together on vacation.

He bit his lower lip thoughtfully, analyzing all possible ways to connect those bright dots until he found a familiar figure.

"Canis Major," he pointed out in the sky. "Sirius one way or another is here with us. The brightest star in the constellation... And in the sky. It suits him."

Regulus laughed, nodding in agreement. James returned to analyzing the sky in search of a new constellation, and a smile appeared on his face as he recognized one.

"That's the constellation of Leo, the Gryffindor animal," he said.

"And do you remember which is its brightest star?" Regulus asked, looking at him.

" You .”

James once again gazed into his boyfriend's eyes, who grinned foolishly at the response.

"Nice one, James," he said with a sigh.

"I learned from the best, Regulus"

Regulus cupped Potter's face in his hands, locking eyes with the hazel orbs behind the glasses, and James didn't look away until he kissed him.

Oh, Merlin... He was so in love.

A feeling so vast and overwhelming that it barely fit in his chest, and he almost didn't know how to express it. Every kiss, every hug, every touch, no matter how simple and delicate, overflowed with all the passion he felt.

"I love when you kiss me," James whispered as they parted.

"I can say the same."

James grinned foolishly, stroking Black's face.

"And I love how your eyes shine like stars."

"You think about that a lot."

"And I will think about it until the end of my days.”

Regulus nestled into James's arms, who kissed him once more and hugged him tightly. Then, Potter planted a kiss on his forehead and squeezed him even tighter, returning his gaze to the sky.

Regulus fit perfectly in his embrace, as if he were made especially for him. And James believed that indeed, Black was made solely for him, his perfect star to brighten his heart. He would never regret having him by his side, never.

" Mi estrella ," he whispered, snuggling the boy between his legs in that tight embrace. " Mi estrellita brillante”

Regulus closed his eyes at those sweet words as James began to stroke his hair.

"Have you been hearing a lot of thoughts lately?" James asked, recalling what Madame Pomfrey had said earlier.

"The older I get, the stronger it seems," he admitted. "But my head hurt a lot more in the first year. I'll be fine."

"Tell me if it's bothering you too much, okay? We can always come here for you to relax."

Regulus nodded, curled up in Potter's arms, who kissed the top of his head.

"Tell me more stars you can see," Regulus said.

"Alright," James replied, continuing to scan the stars, searching for new recognizable constellations while holding Regulus close. It felt so good to be with him like this… "Columba," he pointed out.

"Hmm..." Regulus hummed in response.

"And there, Vela and Puppis."

"Just one more for the old Argo Navis," Regulus added.

"The constellation named after your friend, the Quidditch cup thief, Carina."

"James!" Regulus exclaimed, laughing loudly. "You won't let that game go anytime soon, will you?"

"Absolutely not," James replied, then continued pointing out stars. "And that star there is Canopus... I think. Not entirely sure. The brightest of them, right?”

"Yes, that's right."

"A great name for the next Black who comes."

"We tend to repeat many names, actually. We've never had that star in the family. Sirius is the third with that name, and I'm the second Regulus."

"It's good to innovate. So many options and you keep reusing them, a waste of tradition!"

"I have to admit, you're not entirely wrong. But my name Arcturus is a tribute to my grandfather, Arcturus Black, and Sirius to my father's grandfather."

"Did you meet any of them?"

"Just my grandfather. He's still alive, actually. Sirius never mentioned him?"

"He must be as terrible as the rest of the family."

"Don't be so harsh, it's just... their way. And Grandpa Archie isn't as strict as my mother or my other grandfather Pollux.”

"The Blacks had their questionable attitudes and issues for sure, but Regulus, for some reason, couldn't see himself without them. James tried to understand that, even though it wasn't easy. He hoped that being always by Regulus's side would help, and that gradually he could assist him in not giving in too much to the family's futile concerns.

"My grandfather was named Henry, and he was one of the best wizards I've ever known," James revealed. "He lived even longer than Professor Dumbledore so far. I might pay tribute to him in my son's name, perhaps."

"Really?"

"But I wouldn't be so obvious with a tribute. Maybe a variation with the same meaning would be enough, or his nickname, it's a great name too, actually."

"Harry?"

"Yes. Many called him Harry."

"It's a beautiful name."

"We already have a name for our son."

"James!" Regulus exclaimed, his face quickly turning red.

"Too soon?"

"What do you think? We've been dating for less than two months!”

"I'm a visionary person," James said, shrugging. Regulus lightly slapped his chest, eliciting a laugh from him. "All right, all right. Too soon for baby talk."

"Definitely. And if I ever have a son, he'll be named after a star or constellation like everyone else in my family."

"I think we'll have a long discussion about that."

"James!"

"I was joking, Reggie," he chuckled, gently holding the boy's hands and kissing them. "No need to get nervous, hm?"

"That's half true. You know you can't lie to me."

"Why did I go and date a Legilimens?”

Black glanced at him sideways, containing a slight smirk. James hugged him again and rested his chin on his shoulder. He noticed how he left the younger one pensive, which worried him a bit. He knew that probably, unintentionally, he was delving into his mind.

Potter then pulled away and took back his notebook, while Regulus remained gazing at the sky. He continued the drawing he was making, detailing the boy's face and making sure to point out several stars around.

"Do you really see a future with me?" Regulus suddenly asked.

James lifted his gaze from his artwork upon hearing Black's voice. He smiled at him, nodding.

"Of course I do!"

"We've been together for a month and a half, and I'm your best friend's little brother... Besides being a Black."

"And are you thinking of breaking up with me?"

"N-no! Of course not, but..." Regulus nervously squeezed the sleeves of the sweater he was wearing. "I don't know. Maybe I didn't expect you to really want something that lasts..."

"Regulus, listen to what you're saying!" James exclaimed indignantly.

Regulus pressed his lips together, averting his gaze.

Potter sighed and approached the boy again, reaching a hand towards his black, wavy locks.

"Hey, Reggie... Look at me," he requested in a gentle tone. " Estrella ..."

Regulus looked at James, staring into his eyes. Potter continued to stroke his hair with immense care and affection, gazing at him lovingly, and he looked back as if he were the most important person in his entire life.

Regulus's eyes were always so expressive that James didn't need to look for long to understand what was going on in his mind. It was one of the things he appreciated in their relationship, that connection that didn't require words to express, just looks and gestures.

He was his star. Undoubtedly, he was one of the most important people in his life, no matter that they had been dating for a short time. He made him feel like never before, like much more than he thought he really was.

James might have a huge ego, yes, but he didn't see himself as perfect as he knew Regulus saw him. He was far from perfect.

"You being a Black has never been and never will be a problem for me..."

 "Perhaps it is for us..."

"And I'll fight against every Black if necessary to keep us together, because I like you... I really like you," he said firmly, albeit in a low tone. "You make me the best version of myself every day..."

"And you make me mine..." Regulus confessed. "Being with you is the greatest act of rebellion I've ever committed against the entire Black ideology."

"One of your Ravenclaw friends is a Muggle-born, so I'm just one of the greatest ones," James remarked and chuckled softly. "I know you have doubts and fears, but I'm here, hm? I'll be by your side always."

" Always ? No matter what happens?"

" No matter what happens," he confirmed. "If we're together, it's because I really want to be with you, Regulus. We're still young, we have many years ahead of us, but... I know I want to be with you, now and in the future.”

Regulus held James's face, delicately caressing it and appreciating every tiny detail.

"Thanks to you, today is one of the best birthdays of my life," James said, and Regulus smiled.

"We've been together for over a month, and if it's up to me, we'll be together for a year, two, three... Until you can't stand me anymore."

"I'll always want you, James," Regulus said. "With all your Gryffindor arrogance and everything."

"And I'll always want my little Slytherin manipulator," James retorted.

They smiled lovingly at each other, never breaking eye contact.

"I'll always want to be with you... Always," Potter reaffirmed. "No matter where I am."

And once again, they pressed their lips together in a lingering kiss full of emotion. James embraced Regulus's waist, pulling him close, while Regulus held his face tenderly.

It was moments like this that made Regulus earn a larger space in his heart every day. When they could talk and express their feelings, understanding each other's insecurities and always showing support, being there. He couldn't see himself having this with anyone else in the world.

"I have a present for you," Regulus said. He took a small box from his pocket and handed it to his boyfriend. "I was wondering if I should really give it to you..."

"Whatever it is, I know I'll love it."

James opened the box under Regulus's eager eyes. His face lit up with a smile when he saw that it contained two rings with stones arranged in a pattern very similar to the constellation Leo.

"Leo is the symbol of Gryffindor, as you said, which is the House of courage and... You're truly the bravest person I know," Regulus began to speak. "And it was the first constellation I taught you to find, the day you comforted me here after a fight with Sirius... I already liked you back then."

"Liked?"

"Yes..." he admitted, his face blushing. "I thought it would be a good idea for us to have rings to wear..."

"A wonderful idea," James said, beaming. "They're beautiful. Thank you."

Regulus picked up one of the rings from the box and James's hand, then placed it on his ring finger. Potter did the same with the other ring, placing it on Regulus's ring finger and kissing his hand afterward.

"Thanks for making this one of the best birthdays of my life."

"And thanks for always being with me," Regulus replied.

James smiled and briefly kissed the other's lips.

"And here it is," he said, pulling away from Regulus's lips and lifting his notebook to the newly drawn page. "Your drawing."

Regulus chuckled softly and took the notebook, admiring the lines that formed a drawing of himself. He was sitting, looking up where there were several stars moving and shining, and his hair moved gently with the wind in the drawing.

"I love it. It's perfect."

"Not as perfect as you in person."

Black smiled and set the notebook aside, wrapping his arms around Potter's neck and kissing him again. James smiled against his lips and let himself fall back onto the pillows and blankets, lying with the other on top of him and hearing him laugh.

They pulled apart slightly, and Potter admired the beautiful face of his boyfriend. With his hand, he brushed aside the strands falling over Regulus's face, allowing him to see the reddish birthmark he had on the side near his left eye and the blue-gray irises he loved so much.

James admired every tiny detail of Regulus's face and eyes in the moonlight, smiling as affectionately as possible.

The stars in his eyes were brighter than any in that vast sky.

"Always together, hm?" he whispered. "Never doubt how much I want to be with you."

"I won't..."

" Mi estrella "  he whispered even lower, embracing him tightly.

Regulus grinned goofily at those words, and it didn't take long for the couple to kiss again.

His birthday had always held great significance for James, and now it had an even greater one. It was the day he reaffirmed to Regulus and to himself that he would do anything for him, and that they would be together at any time, under any circumstances.

He would always be with his little lion star, owner of the most beautiful starry eyes.
