Soft April 2024 - Day 15: Fireplace

Summary:

They'd taken a holiday. A proper one, in a nice cottage on Earth. They just want a nice evening watching a movie in front if the fireplace, but the Doctor really shouldn't be trusted with fire.

Notes:

I just like making thirteen accidentally start fires.
I am mildly dyslexic and I don't proof read so there may be errors, sorry for that.
Enjoy

Work Text:

Rose had convinced the Doctor to take a proper holiday. The Tardis was locked and sat outside, and they weren't using it for the duration of their holiday. They just needed to relax. Three days into the holiday, the Doctor was getting bored. It wasn't like they stayed in the cottage all day every day, the Doctor had gotten her old car out of storage.

Bessie was a wonderful car. The Doctor loved it. Rose just thought it was a little bright, and dangerous with all it's modifications. Still it got them from place to place just fine, and they were doing plenty. Still the Doctor was bored.

Well, maybe bored wasn't the right word. She just didn't feel relaxed yet. Didn't feel busy either, and certainly not stressed. She was itching to do something. Something that wasn't exploring old caves without aliens being in them, or going on ziplines. Or doing underground golf.

"What do you want to do tonight?" Rose asked from where she was sat curled up on the sofa with a book.

"Watch a movie?" she suggested.

"Bedknobs and broomsticks," she agreed immediately. "I'll cook tonight," she added. The Doctor sighed, she'd wanted to cook. Given how poorly her last two attempts had gone though she couldn't blame Rose. They didn't understand it, in previous regenerations the Doctor had been a brilliant cook. Something just wasn't clicking this go round.

"I'll make the living room cosy then," the Doctor said. "Maybe light the fireplace." Rose hummed.

Later, far too long for the Doctor and far too soon for Rose, Rose got up to start on dinner. With Rose gone, and nothing good on tv, the Doctor turned her attention to the fireplace. It didn't take her long to successfully start a little fire, safely in the fireplace. She was very proud of herself. But then the single lump of wood that was on fire decided to tumble out of the fire place.

The Doctor watched in shock as it rolled across the tile, still on fire, and hit the carpet. She looked between the burning lump of wood at the fireplace now empty of fire, and back again.

"Rose!" she shouted. "Rose!"

"What?" Rose shouted back.

"I've messed up! Bring water!" she called, watching as the carpet went up in flames too. Rose came running in, jug of water in hand. She tipped it over the fire, and pulled the fire extinguisher from the basket near the fireplace. The Doctor stepped back and watched her wife fix her mistakes.

"How did that happen?" Rose asked once the fire was out.

"I don't know," the Doctor admitted. Rose sighed.

Later, once Rose had called the owners of the cottage they were staying at, they pair settled onto the sofa with their dinner. The fireplace was safely lit, sorted by Rose, and bedknobs and broomsticks was playing on the tv. It wasn't exactly the best day, but it felt very them anyway. The Doctor was no longer trusted around fire, and she wasn't going to complain about that any time soon. She was just happy they'd gotten their evening.
