Work Text:
Mike is dying, blood spilling from his abdomen. It darkens his shirt and makes it stick to his skin. It doesn’t help that he had just tumbled down a hill post bullet wound. His face shows no evidence of the pain, a well formulated poker face Mike had come to perfect after his time working for.. everyone. The wound did hurt like a bitch, his grip loosed on the gun he normally held so tightly.
The water is peaceful as it flows, and despite the fact it’s dirt and grass the ground isn’t too uncomfortable. His mind slips to Kaylee, how he would certainly never see her again. He’d always known this was a possibility but the fact it was a reality still stung. At least he knew she’d be okay, she was a smart young lady with a bright future ahead of her. Certainly brighter than any future he may have had. God the sun was bright in his eyes, things were starting to get fuzzy.
He slips off again, the water is so blue. For a moment it reminds him of Jesses eyes big and panicked begging him for comfort and help. He hopes Jesse gets out, goes to Alaska or something. But who was Mike kidding, Walt was going to suck Jesse right back in once Mike wasn’t there to get in the middle. The kid was always like that, like a loyal pup who will come running back even after you kick it away and shove it’s face in the dirt. It’s just in his nature.
The breeze is soft against his skin, warm. For a moment, Mike wonders if things could have been different. Maybe if he’d not been shot down in Mexico he could’ve stopped Walt from killing Gus. Maybe if he killed Lydia that night he could have left all this quietly. But that’s stupid, what’s done is done. When Mike is out, he’s out. The dirt shifts slightly beneath him.
Suddenly he was snapped out of his stream of thought by Walters babbling. The man is apologizing, which almost makes Mike chuckle if only it wouldn’t hurt the gaping bleeding hole in his side. He could feel the man next to him but didn’t turn to look.
If only for a moment, Mike wonders what will happen after this. To Kaylee, to Jesse. But then, it’s far too late for Mike to worry about hypotheticals. Walter says something Mike doesn’t quite hear. He could feel himself slipping and the last thing he wanted to hear was the man who shot him rambling. Even in his final moments Walt will not give him a moments rest.
“Shut the fuck up and let me die in peace.”
