Work Text:
Alphys put down her GameBoy and checked the time on her phone.
Undyne had been gone a few hours now, and she’d been pretty evasive about where she was going. Not that Alphys felt the need to know Undyne’s whereabouts at all times, but that was unusual for her. Undyne had always been her open book.
So either something was wrong, or else…
The only other thing she could think of was that Undyne wanted to surprise her with something.
The more Alphys thought about it, the more she began to lean toward that theory. Undyne was really bad at pretending things weren’t wrong when they were, for the most part. And she hadn’t had all her telltale signs of hiding something bad before she left. Quite the opposite, in fact.
So what could this hypothetical surprise be, that would have Undyne so excited?
Wait… she isn’t going to… no. No way. I mean… maybe?
Alphys’s heart beat fast. Man, I wish… but we only just talked about it a couple weeks ago…
Just then, she heard a key in the door of the apartment.
Alphys picked her GameBoy back up and unpaused her game, pretending she hadn’t been waiting impatiently this whole time. “H-hey, ‘Dyne!”
“Hey!” Undyne called from the hallway.
Okay, something’s definitely up. Undyne’s voice was never that high.
Alphys turned off her game and got up from the couch. “Where w-were you? I was st-starting to get worried!”
“Oh, ya know.” Undyne hung her coat in the closet. “...Around!”
“Very descriptive.”
Undyne paused in closing the closet door, seeming to contemplate something. “Um… Al… can I meet you in the kitchen in a second?”
Oh, boy. This is either really good or really bad. “S-s-sure! I’ll, uh, s-see you there?”
What is happening? she thought as she shuffled to the kitchen. It can’t be what I imagined, can it? God, I need to sit down.
After several minutes, just when Alphys was about to go look for her, Undyne entered the kitchen, very poorly hiding the fact that she was holding something behind her back.
Oh my god. I think this is happening. Alphys could barely keep a smile from erupting across her face as Undyne stood squarely in front of her.
“Hey, Alphys. Uh… look, I know we only talked about this not that long ago, but, if I keep waiting, I’m gonna lose my nerve. So… well, if it’s too soon and you wanna say no, I get it, I won’t be hurt… that bad. But, uh… ah, jeez.” Undyne rubbed her forehead and took a deep breath. “Al…” She got down on one knee.
Alphys was trying not to make it obvious that she was also trying to control her breathing, but she was pretty sure she was failing. Though it really didn’t matter, she found, as Undyne showed her a tiny ring box and opened it to reveal a gold ring with five diamonds. “I’d, uh… really love it if you married me.”
“Ohhhhh, ‘Dyne!” Alphys cried, throwing her arms around Undyne.
Undyne lifted her straight up and spun around as both of them laughed. After a second, they just looked at each other, grinning stupidly.
“Do you, uh… wanna try it on?” Undyne asked eventually.
“OH! Oh, uh, y-yeah! You still, you still got it?”
“Right here.” Undyne set Alphys down on the floor and pulled the ring out of the box, slipping it onto the third finger of her right hand.
“Wow, it’s p-perfect!” Alphys marveled.
“I may or may not have gotten Mettaton to get your measurement for me.”
“What did you have to p-pay him to get him to do that?”
“Actually, he was so excited for us, he, uh… may or may not have actually partially funded this engagement ring. Not confirming, though.” Undyne looked away. “He did say I had to get you something good, though. Not that I wouldn’t have anyway, but…”
“Don’t worry, I kn-know what he’s like,” Alphyne laughed. “‘Dyne, I just… I know we o-only just talked about it, but… I was so ready for this.”
“Man, I know. I know we didn’t really say who’d do it, but… I’m glad I got to. Unless you really wanted to?” Undyne cringed.
“No, this was r-really exc-citing! I always kind of dreamed about this,” Alphys admitted.
“Well…” Undyne bent down and pressed her forehead against Alphys’s. “I’m really glad I got to make that dream come true.”
A dream come true, it was indeed. Now all they had to do was tell everyone else, and the next chapter of their life would begin.
