It wasn't very uncommon for one of them to come back to the ship with something in tow. Everyone liked gathering little trinkets and the likes from Earth while they were there. Most of the times, the items were small things that the owner just liked. There was not much big items that got brought aboard.
And then Marvelous came on board one day with a flag with him. It wasn't a very big flag, but it drew attention to it. That wasn't a normal thing for any of them to bring. Everyone was quite confused and intrigued by what he had decided to bring on the ship.
"What's that?" Ahim was the first to ask the question.
"A flag." Marvelous simply replied.
"Does it have a meaning or something? Why'd you bring a flag here?" Luka questioned.
"Why does it matter?" Marvelous didn't seem too bothered by the questioning, but was slightly annoyed. No one questioned half the things they all brought on board. Why was this any different?
"Cause it's not usual."
Marvelous rolled his eyes at the comment. "If you must know, it's a flag related to gender. Did you know that humans have many different ways of expressing and describing their genders?"
"But, why do you have the flag?" Don asked.
"Because it fits me."
"Eh?!"
No one seemed to know how to react to the information. While it wasn't news by any means that Marvelous' gender was certainly not just a guy, they didn't expect this. It was a bit sudden. Besides, it had never seemed like something that Marvelous had desired to out a name to before.
"Am I not allowed to use a term from Earth?" Marvelous retorted at their shock.
"What exactly is the term?" Joe asked.
Marvelous opened up the flag to show off its colors. "This one was called the genderqueer flag. Easiest way for me to describe it is that your gender is something."
"How did you find this term anyway?" Luka questioned.
"Not something you need to bother with."
"You really aren't going to explain?"
"I don't have a good way to explain it. Is that a better answer for you?"
Marvelous was getting a bit fed up with the questioning now. He had explained what he needed to. Why did they keep wanting to know more? Once again, they never questioned anyone this much about their choice of items that they brought back. Why was this so different?
"Fine." Luka shrugged. "Just seems strange that you found this stuff."
"Just so happened to hear about it. It isn't that strange." Marvelous shot back.
"If you say so."
"So, is this what we're going to call your gender now?" Don asked.
"If the discussion comes up, I guess so." Marvelous agreed. "I like the term. Saves the effort of trying to explain the whole issue in words to anyone who insists on knowing my gender anyway."
"As long as you like it, we can't really say no to it."
