(GilHaku Week Day 6: Comfort/Nightmares)

Notes:

hey do you ever think about how the actual moment of Enkidu's death is one of the pieces of the epic that has yet to be rediscovered, so in that way it very much is just a moment for them and them alone. and then you go insane

Work Text:

The first time, yes, had been his friend granting her an important picture. It was necessary for her to understand him. To see his relief, his weakness, and his despair let her to truly appreciate his strength. He hadn’t wanted to talk about it then, and so she had let the topic go.

But once the number of times reached a level she could no longer count, waking up with sweat on her neck and tears in her eyes time and time again with memories that weren’t hers, she’d had enough. Servants were connected to their Masters through their psyche. Their dreams were shared. And that meant they were his.

“Gil.”

She could never tell if his own dream the previous night had been a fond one or not. Sometimes he woke up in a bad mood, but that alone wasn’t proof of anything. Still, she had to approach this carefully.

His lids opened only a fraction, but she could still see just how annoyed he was at being woken up. He started to shut his eyes again. “What is it—” his tone was sharp, and he was clearly going to say more before he saw the sight in front of him. Noticing the wet streaks along Hakuno’s face, he clamped his mouth shut as his eyes opened to their full size.

Wrapping her in his arms, he asked in a much softer tone, “What is it?”

“Gil…” Hakuno began. These tears weren’t fake. After memory upon memory came flooding into her dreams, she couldn’t stop it. “I saw it again. That scene in the rain.”

Despite her vagueness, he immediately seemed to grasp the situation. His grip on her twitched into a harder firmness, his expression growing stiff. Before he had dismissed her, quickly moving on from the topic. But they’d grown much closer now. Their contract was permanent. There was no more running.

“…” Gilgamesh not knowing what to say was an occurrence so rare that it should be celebrated. And Hakuno would be, if it was any other occasion. His eyes which had just gone through several moods now grew empty, as if he could no longer see what was right in front of him.

If this was any other person… If Hakuno was anyone else, their body would already be nothing but a pile of red meat by now. [ ]’s death was not to be witnessed by anyone else. Their story could be known to all, but that memory, just that moment, was his alone.

Until now.

“Gil.”

Hakuno gripped his hand where the trembling fingers had been digging into her back.

Immediately, he loosened up, realizing his nails had nearly broken skin. Like he’d suddenly remembered he’d forgotten something important, his eyes regained focus, looking into Hakuno’s gaze and through her soul. “Are you—”

“I’m okay.” Hakuno gave him a smile even as she choked back more tears. “You don’t need to say anything more. I just wanted to say that, whenever you see it again, and wake up like I did just now, you can tell me.”

Remember their final ask of you.

And Gilgamesh was finally learning to listen.

He pulled her closer, in a much gentler way, and felt her body’s warmth.
