Work Text:
Today was a big day for Blocky. After weeks of waiting and getting the paperwork sorted out, Blocky can officially start his first day here on the airship, making coffee for everyone. And what a first day it was because almost everyone on the airship came by for a cup of coffee. By the time it was break time, Blocky was absolutely exhausted.
Oh man… We never got business like this back at the old shop… I'm exhausted…
Despite the working conditions, Blocky was happy with his new life and knew nothing could change that.
Now then, I think a coffee and a bagel are in order.
Blocky quickly poured the last of the coffee he made and toasted a blueberry bagel before sitting down on the couch in the lounge. While gobbling down the delicious snack, Blocky heard a strange sound coming from the vent on the floor.
Oh god, please don't tell me this airship has a rat problem…
Thankfully, it wasn't that but a big ball came tumbling out of the vent, hitting the wall with an audible thud.
What in the world…
Blocky slowly put his coffee and bagel down and walked over to the strange ball that left a dent in a wall. Suddenly, the ball began to shake before revealing himself to be an oversized roly poly. The two stared at each other before blocky's fear instantly turned to pure joy. He swiftly grabbed the giant bug and hugged the absolute life out of him.
"Oh! Oooh! You're so cute! Are you some kind of overgrown bug or something-"
"Over here!" A Toppat member yelled from down the hall.
Blocky's hugging session was quickly interrupted when he heard people approaching. Without thinking, the bug jumped out of the Blocky's hands and ran towards the counter to hide as four men came barging into the lounge.
"Where did it go!?" One guy said.
“Look around the place! That vent led straight here, he couldn't have gotten far!” A second guy responded.
The four men looked around the lounge, opening the drawers and looking under the furniture. Blocky, who was now standing around scared and confused, was approached by one of the men.
“You're that new recruit I'm assuming yeah?”
“Y-yeah, I run the coffee lounge here.” Blocky answered nervously.
“I figured. Did you happen to see a giant bug come through here?”
They're talking about the roly poly I saw… Hope I don't get fired for this…
“No sir, haven't seen anything like that.”
“Is that so? Oh well then. Come on guys, let's go search around somewhere else.”
The four men peacefully left the room as Blocky sighed.
Man, first day of work and here I am lying to my superiors… Hope I don't make a habit out of that.
Once Blocky calmed his mind, he went over to the place the bug was hiding and opened the cabinet.
“There you are- WHOA!”
The bug made a mad dash for the exit before Blocky quickly grabbed him, being careful not to hurt him accidentally. Blocky could tell the bug was still afraid of him.
“H-Hey now! It's okay little guy! I'm not gonna hurt you but you can't go running around the airship like that!”
As if the bug understood him, he slowly stopped trying to escape and looked back at Blocky with curiosity. Blocky smiled at him and continued.
“See? I'm not gonna hurt ya little buddy.”
Blocky gently patted the bug on his head, causing the bug to smile back at him.
“I would love to sit here and continue this but my break is almost over. You can hide out in the cabinet again until I'm done with work if you want?”
The bug nodded and quickly made his way to the counter. Before closing the cabinet, Blocky left him a bagel to snack on. The rest of the day went on as normal and by the end, Blocky was even more exhausted.
Who knew everyone here would love my coffee to death… If this is gonna be an everyday thing, I'm gonna need an assistant.
Unknown to Blocky, the roly poly had hopped out of the cabinet and crawled over to him, staring at him with curiosity once again. He perked up once he noticed him.
“Oh. Hey little buddy. I just finished my work… *yawn* I need a little rest, that's all.”
The bug stared at him before crawling towards the pot of coffee Blocky had leftover. Blocky watched as the bug gently lifted the pot, poured it into a glass, and pushed it over to him.
W-Whoa, he's strong for a little guy.
Blocky slowly sat up from the counter and took the coffee.
“T-Thank you… Uh…”
Oh that's right, does he even have a name?
Once again, the bug understood him and looked around the room until he spotted a dice that someone had left on the counter earlier. He went over to the dice and pushed it over to Blocky.
“You wanna play a game with that dice?”
The bug frowned and shook his head. He pointed at the dice with his stubby bug arms and then at himself.
“Hmm… Oh! Is your name Dice?”
The bug, now known as Dice, nodded happily and rolled around in a ball as Blocky smiled.
“Well, It's nice to meet ya Dice, my name is Blocky.”
Once Blocky finished his coffee, he hid Dice inside his work bag and headed back to his room. Once there, he quietly closed the door behind him and opened the bag.
“Alright, the coast is clear little buddy.”
Dice happily jumped out of the bag, looking all around the room while Blocky laid down on the bed.
What a day, I finally start my new job and then I bump into this weird oversized roly poly named Dice… Which reminds me…
“Hey Dice? Can you come here for a sec?”
Dice, who found his way to the trashcan in Blocky's room and started eating from it, stopped and went over to Blocky.
“I meant to ask this while we were in the lounge but… What are you exactly? You LOOK like a roly poly but I don't think normal roly polies are this big and understand English.”
Dice slightly frowned and looked around the room but couldn't find a way to communicate. Blocky noticed this and thought of something.
“Can you draw? I have a pencil and some paper if you wanna try that?”
Dice smiled and happily bounced around in a ball before bouncing up to the desk. Blocky slowly got up from the bed and grabbed a paper from the desk drawer. Dice, who grabbed the pencil sitting on the desk, began to draw different things on the paper. Blocky watched in awe as Dice drew what looked to be a little spaceship heading for Earth.
“So… You're an alien roly poly that crashed to Earth?”
Dice nodded.
“Wow… I didn't think aliens existed but here I am meeting one…”
Who knew being Toppat meant experiencing a bunch of weird things…
Hours passed and Blocky watched as Dice continued to draw before yawning.
“Alright Dice, it's almost 12am, I gotta get some sleep before my next shift. There's some more paper in the drawer if you wanna keep drawing, goodnight little buddy.”
Blocky waved goodnight to Dice as he curled up into bed, slowly falling asleep. Unknown to Blocky, Dice had slowly changed into his human form and continued to draw at the desk.
I think I'm gonna like it here. Dice thought as he continued to draw late into the night.
