To yearn

Summary:

Having a normal day is difficult during The Bonding season but Sonic thought it was still worth a shot to try.

Who knew that'd lead to some creep trying to take advantage of him... After dealing with that bastard and confirming that his luck was just not it for tonight, he tries to go home with some difficulties...

Thankfully a familiar face helps him on the way.

(ps some creep does try to take advantage of sonic but he fails, just a tw in case...)

Work Text:

Believe it or not, Sonic is actually a very light sleeper. It’s sort of a necessity when you’re a hero like him, can’t afford to sleep through the village being destroyed can you? This means that when Sonic does just want to sleep through an entire day, it’s annoyingly difficult.

To be fair, he should’ve picked a better spot but he really likes the afternoon ocean breeze that sweeps by as he lies comfortably on his hammock hanging by two separate coconut trees near the shore. There’s even free music, the ocean waves and seagulls caws– It’s a prime spot under normal circumstances! Normal, circumstances.

Unfortunately, right now is the month before The Bonding. Meaning, mobians are flocking left and right for a chance to mate with the one and only Sonic. Beloved hero of Mobius and currently single as far as they’re aware.

The beta mouse (judging from the nervous squeaking) sneaking towards him may think they’re skilled and all that but the slight crunch of sand underneath their boots gives away their presence. Not to mention their muted but nervous scent of wet pine.

Sonic doesn’t give away that he knows, he finds that it always embarrasses them which results in him doing the comforting because of course he does. That’s why it's better to play stupid. Actually that’s usually the best solution when you’re highly sought out for and rejection becomes tiring.

So Sonic kept his eyes closed and relaxed, even as he felt the mouse’s shadow cover him. He doesn’t move an inch when the mouse puts something solid and light on his stomach. He doesn’t react as he hears the mouse take a deep breath and clasp their hands together, muttering something underneath their breath, “I know I’m insignificant compared to you but please give me a chance…”

…Rejected.

Once Sonic could confirm that the mouse ran off, he opened his eyes and sighed. Disgruntled over this non-confrontational way of confessing that most betas seem to prefer showing. Cute and sweet maybe but lacking in courage. That is exactly why he doesn’t find himself flustered or charmed, just left helpless and awkward over what he’s supposed to do with their gifts. This isn’t even the first time today that a beta tried to leave gifts on his ‘unsuspecting’ self.

Sonic sits up despite his body disagreeing, looking down at the neatly wrapped box with a frown. The smell of trees and subtle lingering smell of berries showed Sonic that the mouse truly put a lot of thought into their gift. It’s even blue in color with a red ribbon, everyone knows that’s his favorite. Unfortunately, spectacular or not– this gift will meet the same fate as the others.

The blue hero gets off his hammock and does a quick stretch to his legs and arms, gift in hand. His nose twitches, sniffing the air.

Omegas were more attuned to pheromones so it was easy to track the mouse’s scent. Not too far from what he can tell.

He bends his knee and with a burst of energy— sprints into the mouse’s direction!

Leaving a gust of air that would blow away anyone, “Sorry!” He quickly passes by the startled mouse but not without putting the unopened gift back in their hands.

Sonic does not look back because he knows that the mouse is dejected and is taken aback by such a rejection.

He can never stand looking at their disheartened faces. For all his talk about being popular and completely owning it, rejecting someone still leaves a bitter taste.

He shakes his head and continues running. No longer in the mood to sleep.

Next destination… will have to be the village. Specifically for chili dogs. His stomach’s doing the talking now that his rest is disturbed.

There’s a reason why he sleeps as much as possible during this time of year. The cravings can just get straight up ridiculous.

A day or two longer and he might not be able to stomach anything at all so he might as well spoil himself with his favorite. He’ll worry about eating other food when Tails nags him about it.

Skidding to a halt, Sonic inhales deeply and thoroughly enjoys the smell of warm food from the humble chili dog stand.

“Come to papa.” He bounces on the heel of his feet, suppressing his excitement. There wasn’t a line to follow so he got right in front and tapped the bell, resisting the urge to tap it a million times in a second. A singular crisp sound notifying the staff of his presence.

“Coming! What can I get you–” Out came a pretty feline, wiping her wet hands on her dirtied apron before abruptly pausing. Delicate lashes flutter at the sight of Sonic, brown eyes flickering back and forth at her hands and him as a blush creeps on her face. For the lack of a better word, she’s gawking at him.

Sonic can’t seem to ever get used to that kind of gaze.

“Heya! I’d like a dozen chili dogs please!” He’s great at feigning ignorance though so he continues with a grin. Lightly drumming the counter of the chili dog stand to burn off some of the nervous energy running through his body. It was a bit naive of him to assume he could escape the infatuation of another mobian in the village of all places so this one’s on him.

“O-Of course, 3 rings per chilidog.” Thankfully, the vendor is a professional first and foremost. Flashing him her nicest smile and grabbing her tongs. Clicking it twice.

Sonic used to just smell the food but now there’s something else making its way to his sensitive nose, smile twitching for a moment. A strangely lingering smell of ginger and spice tickles Sonic’s senses, coming from the Feline herself. An omega, it told him. The same as him. Judging from her apparent interest, she’s misunderstood him as another alpha.

“Is this for your… partner?” Placing hot and ready chili-dogs inside a paper bag, the vendor attempts to start small talk, hinting her interest in that way. The subject is a bit too intimate for Sonic but he can’t fault her for not thinking the same. “They must have quite the craving. I can sympathize.” She leaned a bit towards him, subtly jutting out her chest and tilting her head as her ear twitched cutely, she’s purposely showing a glimpse of her neck. Her scent is stronger now. It’s sort of dizzying.

Correcting mobians whenever they misunderstood his secondary-gender always ends up more awkward than he liked. His lack of confirmation however is exactly what caused this problem in the first place but that’s not the point.

“Aha– Yeah. Guessing your partner’s also getting you a dozen chili dogs, aye?” He acts oblivious and makes use of the alpha label who apparently has an omega mate waiting for him. This has actually caused a lot of rumors and he has a lot of fun making up a different persona every time. At some point, he literally just gave a genderbent description of himself and it still worked for some time.

She visibly wilts, retreating and correcting her posture to something more polite.

Omegas often never pursue directly. They give hints. Show interest. Guide the apple of their eye into pursuing them. Be it Beta or Alpha and some rare cases, to other Omegas. This at least made it easier for Sonic to reject them without actually rejecting them. Sure it felt bad to see as a fellow omega himself but it’s not like he can allow them false hope. That’s just as cruel.

His experience with Amy was enough to ward him from that path of uncertainty. He doesn’t want to repeat that same mistake.

“I wish. Hard to come across an alpha that just… clicks.” She sighed, folding the paper bag now filled with chili dogs.

Sonic understood her woes. No seriously. He’s in the same predicament. But since he’s already lied to her– he can’t take it back…!

“Eh, I’m sure you’ll find one. If not this year, the next and the next after that.” Sonic cheers her on, from one omega to another! It works in cheering her up at least, her smile more genuine albeit bashful.

“Thank you, I hope things go great with your partner.” Sincere or not, she’s smiling softly.

Sonic only grins. Exchanging the bag of chili dogs for an unspecified amount of rings (there are definitely way more than needed) from his quills. “So do I.” Then without giving the lady a chance to give him change, he runs off and is gone in a blink of an eye with his acquired booty.

Just like with the beta mouse, he does not look back at the omega cat and at whatever expression she must have.

He hugs it snug against his chest, its warmth seeping to his fur. He keeps it safe from the air’s pressure as he runs to a secluded area to eat. Passing by other mobians who were mingling with one another, batting eyelashes and whispering sweet nothings that even Sonic’s interruption did not sway aside from a bashful giggle or two.

Sure he could go home but he knows that once he gets home, he’ll end up too lazy and comfortable to do anything else but nestle himself into his nest and collapse for the night knowing he has Tails to rely on for anything else.

So once Sonic found an empty bench by the village’s small park– he called dibs and settled immediately.

The moon has made its way to the starry sky by now, allowing the streetlamps to aid in providing light in places throughout the park, highlighting its wonders.

Sonic tells himself to sit still and enjoy the view of a mystical pond full of lily pads and pink water-lilies that reflect the sky above. Accompanied by a massive willow-tree whose trailing leaves swayed gently with the wind like a slow dance.

Well! He’s seen enough!

Sonic can appreciate the scenery any other time, just not now.

His craving was loud at the back of his mind. Barking for him to stuff his mouth.

He practically ripped apart the paper bag open, catching the chili dogs that nearly fell as a result and stacking them on top of each other. He’d rather marvel at this masterpiece…

Chili dogs that formed a mini-tower right in his grasp. A beauty of red, beige and maroon with green cucumber toppings… Smelling more divine than any mobian or anything he’s encountered– mouthwatering, heart racing and so much more! Chili– he takes a sniff– spicy and just right! Evoking the best of comfort that not many can achieve.

“Hello to you sweetheart~” Sonic cooed, then he’d take one lucky chili dog from the tower– eat it and savor the strong flavor! Or at least, that’s what should’ve happened if it weren’t for an approaching shadow and a strong distracting smell.

It can be somewhat described as pleasant. Or at least, it’s trying to be. The pheromones were potent, overwhelming if one wasn’t careful, a tell-tale sign of an alpha. His musk resembles the natural soil after a rainy day, it should be comforting. But right now, Sonic was just annoyed to be interrupted.

“Hey, didn’t think I’d see THE Sonic around.” Sonic had to force his eyes away from his food and to the bold alpha.

A rabbit with a big smile, hands behind his back as a sign of peace from alpha to omega. His orange eyes were shining, enamored by Sonic as a whole.

“Don’t let me stop you from eating, I just wanted to say hi.” The bunny took liberty in sitting beside Sonic, a bit too close but tolerable. He hasn’t touched him or anything so Sonic hums in acknowledgement.

“Than–”

“Though you can probably already guess that I’m interested in you.” Then the smell of wet earth gets stronger. Assaulting Sonic’s senses. It’s purposeful. Dizzying.

Too much.

Submit

, it crudely demanded from him.

OK, Sonic’s mood soured.

His appetite literally plummeted to the ground. The chilidogs he once thought were godly felt like shit in his hands due to the irky smell that overpowered everything nice in the world. It still hurt when he found out he had dropped them, splattered across the floor amidst his disorientated state. The world spinning around him, his gaze set on the smile across the Bunny’s face, eyes narrowed smugly like he won.

Of course he just had to meet one of the old-fashioned alphas that believed if they got an omega to be docile and weakened from their smell, that means they can go and take. it’s nothing more than a creep’s way to exploit an omega’s biology. Why couldn't he have at least met one of those usual alphas that wanted to show off their capabilities as a potential mate instead? He'd even entertain them if it meant he didn't have to deal with some pervert. Well news flash, Sonic won't take this lying down.

Fueled by the rage of being preyed on and especially for dropping his dozen of chili dogs on the floor, Sonic stood from the bench and glared at the offender. Hands forming into fists, his expression void of the friendly hero image. In its place, a furious hedgehog who’s quills were particularly sharp at this time.

The bunny didn’t seem to expect such a result, innocent-looking eyes widening as if he was the victim here. Maybe that’s how he lowered the guard of other omegas. The thought made Sonic’s fur rise. He should’ve been suspicious when the park was empty.

Some alpha he is.

“You knew exactly who I was when you targeted me.” Sonic spoke without a drawl to his voice, giving the illusion that he wasn’t affected at all, green-eyes several shades darker. “So you can’t blame me for this, OK?” He smiled sweetly, effortlessly masking the anger that brewed within him, earning the confusion of the Bunny.

POW!

Which gave Sonic the opening to do an uppercut on the bastard!!

His fist met with the guy’s chin and the Bunny ended up airborne for a few seconds before collapsing on the floor. Beside Sonic’s fallen chili-dogs.

A fitting end, Sonic thinks.

He rubs his fist, disgusted at all that he touched the Bunny, however briefly. He didn’t even need to use his speed. The guy was just weak.

“Serves you right, creep.” Sonic snarled, grabbing the unconscious bunny by his long ears. This begins his less than ideal journey to the police station. Walking at normal speed to make sure every mobian that sees him knows that whoever he’s dragging is a threat and deserves to be shamed.

As a hero, he is generally forgiving. However, a bottomline is necessary in the end.

His trip to the police station was quick. Sharing just a few words and thanks to his credibility as a hero– the police believed him right off the bat and took the Bunny-guy off his hands. Thank god.

He left the police station and began his journey home. Like with the beta and omega, he doesn’t look back to see that alpha passed out behind bars because he knows his skin will crawl if he had to spend anymore seconds seeing the creep.

All he has to do now is snuggle in his nest and forget this day ever happened.

It’s just… a bit hard… to walk when he was still affected.

“Ugh…” He has to admit, the guy’s pheromones were strong. No wonder he got cocky and tried him for size. He can only imagine the horrifying things that could’ve happened if he wasn’t so prone to resistance.

Sonic started to stumble when he got to an empty road, leaning on a deserted building’s brick wall to keep himself standing.

He closed his eyes, rubbing the bridge of his nose to try and forget the earthy and musky scent that left his knees a bit wobbly. The abuse of alpha pheromones on an unwilling omega lingers. It brought nothing but distress. That would explain why he was giving out a particularly bitter and dry smell rather than his usual light fragrance of a breeze passing by from the sea. Against all odds, Sonic’s body was looking for comfort. For somewhere safe.

And he can’t get that alone. Cursed pack-animal biology.

He blames the approaching Bonding. His impending heat. It made him more sensitive than he usually should be and now he’s suffering for it. Damn it.

Sonic groaned, resting his forehead on the wall. Hoping the smell of bricks could ward off the nausea. He was sort of grateful no one else was around. He’d hate for anyone to see him like this.

Sniff

Or at least– he was alone.

Another scent makes itself known, one so weak and subtle that it’d require a lot of concentration just to pick up on it. It just happened to be a much better alternative so Sonic’s body honed on it. Focused desperately as a means to calm down.

Taking a deep breath, he shuddered. He recognizes the gunpowder and lavender smell that hid the alien attributes beneath. How could he not? It’s unlike anything he’s experienced the first time and even now.

Blurry-eyed, Sonic willed his head to tilt to the right. Glassy eyes squinting at the approaching silhouette of a certain hedgehog. If he wasn’t so sick, he’d have given him a much more lively greeting. Very rarely does Shadow make an appearance outside of eggman-conflict reasons after all!

“Shado– Ughhh…” Instead, all he could muster was a weak wheeze before he heaves. He should’ve collapsed on the floor by now, give into gravity so he could curl up into a defensive ball. But strong gloved hands prevented him from falling. Settling hesitantly over his waist and shoulder, pushing him back up to the wall so he were to stand whether he wanted to or not. Sonic bites back a whine.

The contact is as warm as it is strange for Shadow to be so close to him without the intent to fight or for his work.

“You reek.” Shadow plainly states. Not even a hi or a hello. That’s in character though so Sonic manages to find humor in it when he’d otherwise be very offended.

“Gee, thanks.” Came a sarcastic reply from the blue hedgehog. “Leave it to The Shadow to say the most heartwarming things–” The amused mirth behind his tone and smile is evident anyway. Shadow seems to relax just a teeny tiny bit from that, his hold on Sonic loosening as he rolled his eyes.

“What happened?” It’s also completely Shadow-esque for the guy to jump straight to the point. For someone that sounds so monotone right now, Sonic swears that it’s touched with a bit of concern. He won’t deny that it left him giddy at the idea. Smiling like a stupid fool despite his predicament, stomach churning both from his unsatisfied cravings and the after effects of a probing Alpha’s unwanted pheromones.

“Just had to deal with some creep. No biggie.” He brushed aside his encounter, not eager to talk about it in detail. Though the guy’s attempt failed, it still left Sonic queasy. He’d rather not show that side to Shadow. He’s embarrassed himself enough.

Not like he can exactly see or tell what Shadow’s feeling right now anyway. His vision often shifts from blobs of color to a blurry glimpse of Shadow’s form in front of him. “Were his pheromones so strong?” Sonic pretty much only had Shadow’s voice as a guide and unfortunately for him, Shadow tends to keep his voice steady. Not giving away what he’s feeling.

“Guess so.” Sonic begrudgingly confirms, head tilting back to hit against the wall. “Got my stomach feeling all– ugh… t-twisted dude.” He moved his hands to his peachy stomach, curling in on himself a little. Shadow takes a step back but keeps his hands on Sonic, making sure he stays standing.

“And out of it.” Shadow points out, moving his hand on Sonic’s shoulder to rest under Sonic’s forehead. The blue hedgehog’s temperature was unnaturally cold, making him lean further into Shadow’s palm for whatever warmth he could siphon. Sighing weakly at the touch.

Shadow’s hold on him becomes stiff again.

“Am I? Can still think…” Sonic murmured, not really thinking his state was that bad. He's still talking and thinking, isn’t he? It’s almost like when he’s high on anesthesia but on a smaller scale or something. Excluding how sick he feels to his stomach.

“How many fingers am I holding up?” It takes all of Sonic’s willpower to look up, squinting at the undefined white blob in front of him that’s probably Shadow’s finger. Seeing as he’s mostly mourning the loss of the warm touch on his forehead.

He grimaces, “Uhh… I don’t know, 21? Why’re you making me count? My head hurts… I don’t wanna…” Whining immaturely in a way that he often did to tick off hotheads like Knuckles or Shadow. Usually this is the part where Shadow scolds him or shoots back an insult but instead, Sonic’s met with a thoughtful silence.

“...I’m taking you home.” Is the strange conclusion Shadow came with.

Does that happen to make Sonic feel warmth blossom from the deepest depths of his body? Yes. Will he do anything about it? Absolutely not. “Oohhh… at least take me out to dinner first–” So off he goes to mask his thrill with a teasing comment, nudging shoulders with Shadow as he snickered.

Shadow nudges back, his grip around Sonic’s waist tightening after Sonic easily stumbled back.

“Hilarious as always, Faker.” He sarcastically mused. Sonic can practically hear the eye roll.

“Why thank you.”

Things felt like that’s where the conversation would die down. A satisfying end to it, Sonic supposed. His blurry mind however, did not enjoy the silence. It made room for his unpleasant memories to resurface. His body reacts accordingly, tensing further.

Weakly, he rests his cheek on Shadow’s shoulder– getting a whiff of Shadow’s faint and otherworldly scent that’s so weak for an alpha. Barely noticeable but all the more soothing that way. It isn’t trying to overpower him. It’s not trying to do anything. It’s just– Shadow.

“Charmed others with that sorta sweet talk, did ya?” He eventually caved in, continuing the conversation otherwise he’d get weak knees for an entirely different reason.

He snickers when he hears Shadow groan. “Quit being insufferable for three seconds.”

“...” So Sonic did.

Only for three seconds, of course.

“There you go! I counted right? Right? Did I? I can’t tell. Did I?” Sonic rambled, leaning furthermore into Shadow’s hold who now resorted to using both his hands around Sonic’s waist to keep the blue hedgehog from falling. It would help if Sonic didn’t keep squirming but this is Sonic he’s dealing with so…

Sounding exasperated, “I should’ve left you on that street corner where you were standing.” Shadow sighed.

Sonic snickered, lips grazing Shadow’s shoulder as he tilted up his head to look at where he assumed Shadow’s face was, “But ya’ didn’t.” He retorted, as a matter of factly. A shit-eating grin on his face.

Shadow had stopped walking. Sonic can feel his stare. He wonders if it’s a judgemental one.

“You’re hopeless.” Shadow growled, hoisting Sonic up to stop him from basically draping himself over Shadow. Earning a yelp that definitely must have pleased Shadow enough for him to return treating Sonic with a little more care. Hand placed back in its original position on Sonic’s waist, lowering itself to hold his hip.

It’s strange to think that touch comes so easily now when it comes to Shadow. Borderline… natural.

“Then what’re you doing here with me anyway…” Sonic laughs softly, his body going boneless. Trying his best to be as heavy as possible for his rival’s inconvenience (though Shadow doesn’t flinch at all). It isn’t often that he gets to be so careless around someone and whenever he gets to– he never fails to grab the opportunity.

“Finished GUN mission nearby.” Typical workaholic response.

“Then you found me?” Sonic hummed, not surprised.

“Smelt you by chance.”

The blue hedgehog scrunched up his face, embarrassed. He is well aware of his murky scent at the moment.

“Oh man, I smell awful right now…” He wailed, leaning away from Shadow to the ebony-alien’s dismay. His grip on Sonic’s hip tightening to stop the other from wandering off. “Quit it. Don’t smell me,” Sonic demanded with a whine, gloved hands halfheartedly pushing Shadow away. He knew that his rival wouldn’t budge.

“I can’t exactly control my nose, Hedgehog.” Shadow mused, Sonic’s vision clearing just enough to make out the raised brow on Shadow’s face.

Sonic pouts. “But it’s not fair! I smell like sewer water right now while you’re like…” He purses his lips and leans back to Shadow’s body. Nose twitching as he took in an experimental whiff.

Sniff sniff

Weird. Has Shadow’s scent always been this–

Sn—iff

Nice.” Sonic sighed out, melting into Shadow’s hold so that he could indulge in rubbing his nose on where Shadow’s neck and shoulder met. It smelt the strongest there… Something like how he imagines stardust to smell. Literally out of this world. Completely foreign and alien. Something no one else but Shadow can have.

This isn’t even just about him being an omega– he’s certain that if anyone else were to experience the luxury of Shadow’s comforting pheromones, they’d all come running for more.

It’s shocking how it only took him now to realize this about Shadow.

Then again, this is the first time he got to be this close without interruption.

He expected Shadow to push him off by now. Sure he and Shadow have gotten along really well lately but the grump should still have his limits.

…Thank god Shadow is spoiling him tonight. His stomach cramps were fading away the more he allowed himself to enjoy the presence of a trusted alpha.

“Are you finally settling down?” Shadow whispers softly, causing Sonic to close his eyes in delight and bask in the intoxicating richness of his voice. The gruffness causes goosebumps to form on Sonic’s skin…

Sue him for reacting that way! Shadow’s mouth is right up against Sonic’s ear with the way he attached himself to Shadow… He just hopes Shadow can’t hear his racing heart.

“...I think so, yeah.” He mumbles. Hands clinging to Shadow’s back, just above his sharp spines. He takes this chance to caress them, brushing the short fur and feeling up the sharp quills. Soothing the tense and rigid muscles of Shadow’s shoulder blades. It’s a little clumsy because Sonic can barely keep his hands from shaking but he’s pretty sure Shadow appreciates it.

Usually he can’t even tell what Shadow’s feeling from scent alone but being this close… He can pick up on the sweet tinge of Shadow’s scent the more he continues. Feel just how much more secure Shadow’s grip on him is.

The joy and satisfaction this brings to Sonic is just ridiculous. He couldn’t stop smiling like a fool and resisted the urge to purr. He was almost grateful that the bunny-guy was stupid enough to target him. Otherwise he doubts Shadow (being the big softie he is inside), would have indulged him this much.

For once he did not bother to enjoy the view. Preferring to keep his eyes closed so that he were lulled by the motion of Shadow walking and trick himself into thinking that he and Shadow were something more.

…Could he ever find an alpha like Shadow?

Will he ever find another alpha that is so insufferable to butt heads with, it’s frustrating? Someone who’s not just strong and reliable but would be accommodating and gentle when the situation calls for it? Even if he refuses to let that side of him be acknowledged aloud?

The answer scares him.

It scares him more that he’s even thinking about this.

His stomach churns but this time it’s his own fault.

He yearns.

He yearns to be pursued by only one certain alpha and it freaks him out. Darn omega instincts.

He’s not optimistic enough to believe that Shadow of all mobians would participate in something like The Bonding. Let alone court an omega. Especially him. He knows and yet…

…Pathetic.

At least his suitors have the courage to try while here he is quietly accepting the inevitable.

So full of thought, it took Sonic a minute to realize that Shadow had put him back down on the ground. Standing in front of his home by the hills. The lights from the windows of his home provide him a warm glow to see Shadow staring at him under the night sky. His crimson eyes not giving away his thoughts as per usual.

“Thanks,” Sonic mutters, standing up right and no longer wobbling like a drunken fool. Shadow’s pheromones helped to wake him up but now he sort of wishes he was still out of it enough to not feel so… awkward about it. He isn’t proud of how he acted at all.

“Mhm.” Shadow’s dry responses don't help.

“You know, you should visit more.” And yet he kept talking. Trying to keep him for as long as possible.

“Mhm.”

“I missed you. Only a little bit.” Sonic was yelling at himself to stop sounding so– clingy. Though Shadow probably takes it as a joke.

“Right.” Sonic’s pretty sure that’s a little something of a smile on the ebony hedgehog’s face.

Overcome with courage at the sight, Sonic pressed on with a little stammer; “Did you?”

Then proceeded to immediately regret it. His hands felt clammy under his gloves as he nervously eyed Shadow.

That was already so out of character from someone like him. He’s lucky that Shadow is so– oblivious about these kinds of things. Always brushing it off as weird episodes and carrying on. ‘Damn Social norms’ he’d say.

“Let’s say you’re not the worst company.” Shadow murmured, arms crossed and looking off into the distance. Maybe he was more sincere than he let on.

Indirect as it was– it still is an answer. An answer that made Sonic beam, filling him with the urge to pace back and forth in joy. Thank god he was clear headed enough to cull those instincts and get his act together, acting all calm and suave. Grinning cheekily as he nudged shoulders with Shadow, “I’ll take it.”

Shadow shook his head with a huff and took a step back. Flashing Sonic one of his many exasperated looks before turning his back on the blue hedgehog.

Sonic felt his heart ache a little.

“Wait!” Body faster than his head, he followed Shadow with a few quick steps– looking at him with puppy eyes, “Where’re you going?”

“GUN.”

Sonic’s ears drooped, hands clenched into fists as he hid them behind his back. “Already? You won’t even drink coffee? I can make some–”

“I advise against that. You’ll most likely set the kitchen on fire.” Shadow snorts, meeting Sonic’s gaze. The moonlight only enhanced the crimson color of his sharp eyes that sucked Sonic right in.

Sonic’s not sure if it's his imagination or not but Shadow is definitely much softer tonight for sure.

“Ugh…” And yet he still refused to interact longer than necessary. To Sonic’s dismay.

“Go inside, and rest.” Shadow ordered, poking Sonic’s forehead and slowly pushing him back. With a few stumbling steps back, Sonic groaned louder and sulked, hunched over like some child throwing a tantrum.

Unless there was an active conflict between him and Shadow– Shadow would never even stay and a part of Sonic was annoyed about the limits of their relationship. But being greedy can cause unnecessary problems and Shadow has already spoiled him plenty tonight so…

“...Fine.” He concedes, an exaggerated sigh escaping him.

If Sonic didn’t know any better, he’d think the way Shadow rolled his eyes this time could be described as… fond.

“Good boy.” Shadow shows a victorious smirk and practically purrs his most likely mocking-praise. Voice unfairly husky, Sonic felt his lungs contract and his breath was taken away, butterflies swarming his stomach as his fur stood on end. Breathing shaky and short.

A flustered mess, Sonic stares in stunned silence as Shadow runs off in a blink of an eye. He stood by the door and could not pry his gaze away from where Shadow once was.

He wished he got to see more of Shadow’s face. See more clearly at the beginning to take in every little detail of Shadow up close.

And maybe feel the agent’s hands better. Maybe have it caress his sides and slide down to his thighs–

Sonic splutters, eyes so wide they were about to pop out of his sockets. His body felt like it was on the verge of melting…! Face so hot that Sonic’s pretty sure he’s no longer blue. He hugged his arms, panting weakly as he stumbled back and slid down the door till he was able to rest his shaky knees that threatened to give up earlier.

This wasn’t anything like with the rabbit. Shadow didn’t even do anything! It wasn’t even his smell that had him this… flustered!

He pressed his cheeks together and took a deep breath. Pushing down the thoughts in his mind that ranged from innocent pining to downright obscene about a certain hedgehog.

Of course, it was pointless.

…The Bonding is such a pain…!!!!
