Because Charles never asks him to spend the night. And Max is too scared of being rejected to ask. Charles probably doesn't want to, he doesn't want to wake up next to him in his arms, snuggled up against his warm body under the covers with Max’s grown hair tickling his skin, and then after a little lazy morning sex make breakfast together, and Max knows they're both terrible cooks and it's better to keep them both out of the kitchen, but he'll be happy to eat burnt toast with coffee. Max can't get the image out of his head. But he knows the answer to the unspoken question every time Charles runs to the bathroom first and doesn't continue the post-orgasmic embrace. Max is about to ask, and Charles will look at him pitifully, carefully choosing the right words so as not to hurt him, even though the meaning is not changed by a polite formulation.
