“No, Bivey, that’s not-” Split tried her best to correct Bive, who was currently dumping far too much flour into the cookie dough mix.
“WHAT? YOU SAID ADD FLOUR.” Bive tilted her head, inadvertently pouring even more flour into the bowl.
“Well, yes, but that’s…” Split thought carefully about what to say next, not wanting to make Bive feel bad for ruining the recipe. “That’s good, now we add more of the other ingredients so we can make more cookies!”
“Okay… I’ll start adding the ingredients-” Bive picked up the bag of sugar as she responded, growing suspicious of Split’s pauses.
“Nonono, that's fine I can do it!” Split rushed to take the ingredient out of her hands before she could start pouring, desperately trying to avoid ending up with 1000 cookies on her hands. Unfortunately, she just didn’t have enough space in the oven for that many.
As Split carefully measured the ingredients, Bive queried. “SO… Why are we making cookies?”
Split began to mix the cookie dough as she spoke. “Oh! Well, I thought it looked like a nice day to do some baking, and I-”
“No, why COOKIES. You know I don’t eat sweet food.” Bive interrupted.
“Oh, well… To be honest with you, I was hoping I could get you to try them anyways..? You always like the food I make, and who knows, maybe you really like cookies and you just don’t know!” Split made sure to phrase her words carefully, fearing one slipup could make Bive suspect another conspiracy.
“... ACCEPTABLE.” Bive spoke, leaving Split sighing in relief.
“Oh, I think the cookie dough is done mixing! Let’s get these shaped and in the oven, shall we?” Split chirped, the cheery smile on her face as infectious as always.
Split began to scoop the dough onto a baking tray, as Bive prepared tools for cutting the cookies to shape. Once the tray was full of cookie dough, Split happily began carving various shapes into the cookie dough, however when she looked across at Bive’s progress, she found her staring absentmindedly at the tray.
“Uh, you okay, honey?”
“What do I make.”
“Oh! Well, you can make random shapes, or you could try and cut out the shapes of things that make you happy?”
“Things that make me happy… RIGHT.” Bive turned back to the sheet of dough with laser focus.
Split continued to shape her side of the dough, blissfully tuning out the scratching noises coming from Bive’s side as she struggled.
Eventually, Split had finished. “Well, honey, what did you make-” She turned to look at Bive’s cookies, and noticed that they were all in the crude shapes of dogs, bananas, and snails. As she looked closer, she started to notice each individual scratch, made with love.
“This is so corny I’M SORRY-” Bive began to panic as she snapped out of her focus.
“NONONO! It’s fine! I’m flattered, really!” Split rushed to make sure Bive knew she appreciated the gesture.
“...really?”
“Yep! In fact, I’m head over peels!”
“Oh! Ha. Haha! Hahaha! I get it!” Bive slowly ramped up from a light chuckle to a cackle as the joke set in for her.
“Ok, now we put them in the oven!” Split said, sliding the tray into the oven as she turned up the temperature. “What do you wanna do now-”
Before she could finish, Bive had already sat down in front of the oven, watching the cookies bake as she felt the heat radiate from inside it.
“Yeah, I guess that works!” Split sat down next to her, feeling the comforting warmth of the oven and of Bive’s body next to her. They sat there in silence for a few moments, watching the dough expand, before a faint hum began to fill the air. “Bivey, are you… purring?”
“UH. I. UHM.” The hum died down as Bive became flustered.
“Oh no, don’t worry! It’s cute!”
“...really?”
“Yeah! Funnily enough, I’m actually more of a cat person than a dog person. Who woulda thunk, eh?”
“huh…” Bive quietly remarked. They sat in silence a few moments later, before she was surprised by the sudden feeling of something on her shoulder. She calmed up, however, when she realised it was Split's head, as she began to lean her head on Split's in turn.
Slowly, the hum returned, though louder than before.
