With his nerves standing on end and his heart racing at a mile a minute, a blue hedgehog closed the door to the school restroom and let his body sink to the ground. He attempted to regulate his breathing and calm himself as his mind worked to process the reasons why he's felt so nervous around one of his best friends in the past few weeks.
In the last couple of months, things certainly had... progressed between himself and Amy. Playful banter had turned into thinly veiled flirtation, their friendly hugs transformed into warm, lingering embraces, and Sonic had found himself daydreaming about long, messy makeout sessions with the pink hedgehog more times than he would be willing to admit.
So, he was attracted to her, for sure. And that was certainly part of the reason why he was sitting on the dirty floor of the school bathroom trying to prevent his heart from beating itself out of his chest cavity. But something else was bothering him in regard to this crush of his. Something lying deep in his subconscious had him rushing for the restroom the moment they exchanged glances as she walked out of her calculus class with their friend Lanolin.
Sonic shook himself out of his thoughts and made himself more aware of his surroundings. He looked around the bathroom, peering underneath the gaps of the stalls to ensure no one else was in here to witness him looking nothing like his typically cool, even-keeled self. As he scanned the rest of the bathroom, his eyes landed on a flier hanging on the wall near the hand dryer.

Sonic cursed under his breath. Prom was just a little under a week away and he was nowhere close to prepared for it. And what's more, he knew that Amy had put a lot of time and passion into heading the Prom Planning Committee and he had not once acknowledged her for it. Plus, she had to have a swarm of guys and girls vying to take her as their date.
All of his time had been consumed by track meets and trying to keep his grades up, all while saving the world from the maniacal Dr. Eggman and his robots. But, Amy had been just as busy with two-thirds of the same things, plus all the activities she was involved in at school. It would be shallow of him to chalk all of this up to just being 'too busy.'
“Fuck me,” Sonic mumbled under his breath, exasperated from his own rushing train of thought. He knocked the back of his head against the restroom door, and just as he did so, he felt someone pulling the door back to enter. He shot up from his sitting position and found himself standing nose to nose with Knuckles.
“Oh, h--hey, Knux! How’s it hangin’?” Sonic drawled, bringing a nervous hand up to the back of his neck and brushing down his quills. Knuckles just gave him a raised eyebrow in response.
“I need to piss... So, you gonna get out of my way, or...?” Without waiting for a reply from Sonic, he pushed the hedgehog out of the way and ambled toward the urinals. Sonic turned around and opened and closed his mouth several times in a row before finally speaking.
“Bro, who are you taking to prom?” He asked, his eyes wandering away from the echidna as he unzipped his shorts the sound of liquid streaming against porcelain filled the awkward silence. Knuckles finished urinating before zipping himself back up and washed his hands. After flicking the excess water from his fists and drying his hands off, he turned toward his friend with a chuckle.
“‘S this your way of askin’ me out, Hedgehog?”
“Haha! You wish, Knucklehead.” Sonic responded with a chuckle of his own and held his knuckle out for a fist bump. Knuckles returned it with a friendly sharp-toothed grin. As handsome as Knuckles was, the echidna wasn’t quite the Mobian he was vying for.
“I'm taking Rouge. Why? You worried someone got to Amy before you?"
Sonic's eyes went wide before wandering away from the echidna, feeling embarrassed for being read like a book. Knuckles gave him a pitying look and shook his head.
"Sonic, you had months to do this," he scolded, "You know Shadow's asked her, Surge has asked her, Storm, Tangle and Whisper offered to take her if you didn't have the guts to ask... Hell, even Jet's asked her. Multiple times at this point."
"I get it, I get it. I'm really fumbling hard here, you don't need to rub it in. I know how people feel about her, I just--"
"Just fucking ask her, dude! The whole reason no one's gotten her to go with them is because she's been rejecting them, waiting on your dumb ass to do something!"
"Oh... is she... Really?"
“Yes, ‘really,’ bro. You know Amy, she’s all about this mushy romantic shit and she was not going to ask you. So what the hell are you waiting for?”
“I honestly don’t know. I just wasn’t even thinking about prom, and--” Knuckles had reached his limit watching Sonic fumble over his words. He pushed past the hedgehog, knocking him in the back of the head as he walked toward the exit. He turned his head as he opened the door, to give Sonic his final words of wisdom.
“We have one more week. So, you better get on it before she ends up taking Jet as a pity date.”
Sonic followed shortly behind his friend, gritting his teeth as he knew that Knuckles was right. As he strode to his final class of the day, he ran plans for his grand promposal through his head.
Sonic impatiently tapped his hands on the wooden boards as he sat on the pier next to the entrance to Twinkle Park, waiting for a certain pink hedgehog to arrive. Granted, he arrived an entire hour earlier than when he had told his companion to arrive. He was supposed to attend track practice but his stomach had been in knots as the day went on and he decided Track would only stir up his nerves more.
Before entering his final class, he scribbled a note asking Amy: "Meet me at our spot? 7 o'clock." and posted it on her locker.
After school, he rushed around Station Square, stopping at a restaurant for a quick meal, and then the floral shop to pick out a gift for his intended sweetheart.
Now sitting at the pier, he had a simple bouquet of roses sitting beside him. Amy was a romantic, no doubt about that, but keeping it simple seemed to be the way to go for her. He sighed and rested himself on his back and listened to the ocean as its waves crashed against the metallic beams holding up the pier.
Sometime later, he felt a hand brush across his cheek and he blinked his eyes open only to be met with the beauty of Amy Rose. She was still dressed in her school uniform, a white button-down that had managed to remain crisp after 8 hours of wear and a pleated green skirt. With a twitch of his ear, he yawned and gave her a tired, sheepish smile.
"Hey there, sleepyhead. Did I keep you waiting long?" She murmured, taking her hand away from his cheek and placing it on her thighs, where the other had laid. Sonic almost immediately missed the contact.
"Ugh, yeah, I've been here for months, Ames! I haven't eaten or showered in days and I think Eggman's taken over the world. Where have you been?" He mumbled groggily, his sleepy voice and laugh making Amy smile. He sat himself up with a grunt and invited Amy to join him at the edge of the deck. He reached beside him and lightly brushed against the fabric of her skirt in search of her hand again. A blush colored her cheeks due to the contact and she took his hand in hers and held it.
"No worries, s'not on you. I had actually skipped track today. I was feeling... jittery. So I got here a little earlier than expected."
"I have never known you not to be jittery." Amy deadpanned. Sonic laughed.
"Point taken. And, thanks for meeting me here," He continued, being a little more sincere this time around. Amy squeezed his hand and hummed as she gazed at him.
"Of course! Was there... something you wanted to tell me?" Sonic looked over from the burning horizon to the pink hedgehog, bathed in the light of golden hour. Her eyes were glimmering in anticipation, she was hoping she was right about the reasons he asked her to meet him here. Sonic could only think of how beautiful she was and how much he wanted to kiss her.
"Y--yeah! Yeah actually," Sonic stammered as he shook himself out of his thoughts. He began feeling for the bouquet on his other side, when he couldn't feel it, his eyes darted towards where they had been lying, "Wait, what the--?"
Panicking, his eyes quickly scanned his surroundings, the roses weren't in Amy's hand, nor were they anywhere to be found on the deck, and as his eyes landed on the water, he spotted small dots of red floating about in the ocean. It was then that his and Amy's communicators chimed in unison.
Sonic groaned and cursed under his breath, it was just his luck for waiting as long as he had. Tails' voice garbled over the speaker, sounding urgent but leveled and calm.
"Eggman bots are digging up the land at Mystic Ruins and attacking the archeologists, Knuckles and I need backup, ASAP!"
“Amy and I are on our way, buddy! Hang tight!” Sonic responded into his wrist. He then looked at Amy, giving her an apologetic smile.
“I promise we’ll continue our talk after we smash up those bots and get rid of Egghead.” Sonic got up from sitting on the deck and offered Amy his arms. The look in her eyes as she hopped into them made a distinct pang of guilt shoot through him. He held her firmly against his chest and blasted in the direction of the train station where they would run alongside the tracks leading to the Mystic Ruins.
When Amy and Sonic arrived, they found their friends smashing up and dismantling the bots that were harming the people who had been researching the land. There were dozens more digging up the land to its detriment, causing cliffs to landslide and the habitats of the natural life being displaced. Flickies fluttered and Rickies scattered, confused and dismayed as their homes were taken over.
In a fit of fury, Amy hopped out of Sonic's arms and got to work on smashing up their enemies. Sonic took a brief moment to watch as her whole body flung towards danger. She was acrobatic, flipping and twisting herself through the air and gracefully landing a heavy hit on a bot that had been digging near a poor Ricky's burrow. Sonic hoped he wasn't swooning externally the way he felt he was internally. He wished he could yell out to her, just in this moment,
“Amy Rose, please go to prom with me!”
Meanwhile, Eggman was floating about the ruins in his hovercraft, cackling like a maniac while his robotic henchmen dug around the Mystic Ruins in search for the source of some chaos energy that had been emitted from the land.
"You're too late, Sonic! My--"
"Yeah, yeah. I'm not really in the mood to listen to your insane diatribes right now, Egghead, so let's end this already." Sonic rolled his eyes and shook his head, vexed by the fact that this idiot-genius was the only thing coming between him and Amy in this moment.
"How dare you interrupt my speech, you will pay for this, Rodent!" As Eggman scolded Sonic, he tapped away at some buttons and a large shield formed around his machine. After a few more button taps the bottom of his hovercraft slid open and out dropped a large wrecking ball. Sonic laughed.
“Really, Eggy? We goin’ old school today? Haven't we learned from our past failures?” Sonic taunted as he ran up the cliff where Tails’ workshop stood, to get himself closer to the evil doctor. The mad scientist begins swinging the wrecking ball around, knocking every tree, shrub, and cliffside in sight. Sonic sped toward Eggman and quickly turned foot to see Amy in tow. Just then, Eggman was inching closer and closer to Tails’ workshop.
"Ames! Give me a boost?" Sonic called out to her, she twirled her hammer in her hand and sprinted toward the blue hedgehog. As she got closer to him, she choked up on her weapon and prepared to swing as Sonic charged up a spindash.
Knocking him swiftly into the air, he landed on the base of the wrecking ball, holding fast to the chain it was connected to for balance.
“Nice hit, Amy!” He yelled down to her before beginning to swing the wrecking ball with his own momentum, Eggman yelling at the hedgehog all the while. When he got the ball swinging fast enough and the hovercraft moving away from the workshop, began working to dismantle it from the machine itself. Charging up another spindash, he successfully disconnects the wrecking ball from the hovercraft. It rolls toward the spot where Amy had been standing, Sonic rolling along with it before hopping off the ball and giving the girl a smile.
This was it. This was his opportunity. With all the danger out of commission, and even with Eggman still floating about in the air, waiting for a final blow from either hedgehog, this was the perfect moment to ask.
“Amy,” Sonic began, walking closer to her, “would you--”
Before he could finish his inquiry, Amy asked him to move aside. She grappled remnants of the chain connected to the ball, twirled around several times, as if it had weighed about as much as a shelled peanut, and flung it toward the evil genius’ hovercraft, finally sending it flying into the stratosphere.
“You were saying...?” She brushed her hands together when the job was done and smirked at the blue hedgehog.
“Amy Rose,” he began again, taking Amy’s hands in his own and pulling her closer to himself. As he did this, he could feel the presence of his other friends standing behind him, likely sighing in relief or laughing as his proposal finally, finally left his lips, “Please, will you go to prom with me?”
“ Yes!” Amy smiled widely, and crushed Sonic in an embrace, he returned it happily, fully affected by the radiant aura of Amy Rose. He thought for a moment about the lost roses floating in the sea. He would have to make another stop at the floral shop soon.
Prom had proven to be much more fun than Sonic ever expected. He shared a good meal with his classmates, played some games with the guys, and danced with his friends and of course, with his date. Sonic and Amy were inseparable through it all. The only time Sonic had let go of Amy through the night was when he approached the band that would be playing later in the night to request a song.
After dancing to several high-energy pop and electronic songs with each other and with friends, Amy asked to take a break from dancing. Sonic was quick to follow and sit quietly with her as she took some well-deserved rest. Amy and Sonic were sitting together on a bench at the venue of their prom, several feet away from the crowd and near a cascading waterfall that poured into a tranquil spring. Currently, their fingers were intertwined, placed gently in Sonic’s lap as they admired the twinkling lights. Enchanting sounds of the forest and the frenetic music pumping in the background filled their ears. Amy leant her head against his shoulder, feeling the exhaustion slowly taking over her body.
"You don't have to stick here with me if you still feel like dancing," Amy murmured with a yawn, nuzzling her face against his chest, "I just need to sit for a moment..."
Sonic chuckled and squeezed her hand.
“You’re amazing, ya know that, right Ames?” he asked with a playful nudge of his shoulder against her cheek.
“Huh?” Amy was slightly puzzled by the sudden compliment following her offer. She adjusted herself so she could look at the hedgehog, only to be momentarily distracted by how handsome he looked in his suit with the buttons on his shirt loosened down his chest. Amy had made a compromise with him, he didn’t have to wear a tie if he at least wore pants.
“I mean, you put your heart and soul into making sure everyone would have a good time tonight. You planned the theme, coordinated the band and DJ, decorated a goddamn forest-- and all while having to kick Egg-Ass just two hours before prom. And now here you are, looking gorgeous, dancing like a wild animal, and being named prom queen?" Sonic mused, taking pause to fiddle with the tiara sitting on her head and the rose tucked in her quills.
"Being that badass has to be exhausting. I don't blame you for needing to rest. But I'll stick right with ya through it.” Sonic dropped his hand to cup her cheek and caress it. His eyes were boring so sincerely into hers that it made her cheeks flush underneath his touch. She smiled softly.
“That’s really sweet, Sonic... Thank you for being here with me to celebrate it! It really means a lot to me that you asked me. I've had such a fun time with you tonight!" She placed her hand over the hand that was on her cheek, brushing her thumb across the back of his palm.
“Of course. Wouldn’t have missed it for the world.” He almost leaned in to kiss her, but as soon as he thought to lean in, the background music had come to an end, signaling that prom was beginning to wind down. Sonic and Amy’s ears perked up when they heard a loud voice speaking to the crowd.
“Are y’all having fun tonight?!” Vector boomed into the mic as the band set up behind him. The crow of prom-goers cheered and whistled in response, garnering a grateful smile from the croc and a relieved sigh from Amy.
“That’s great! You all were wonderful! Now, I’m gonna intro the next act, and they’re gonna slow things down a bit for ya! So sweep your guys and gals off their feet, give ‘em the night of their lives, and fellas and ladies, welcome to the stage, Hot Honey!! ”
The song that came on rang through Sonic’s ears as if it were playing in slow motion. The song began with a steady snare, a synthesizer carrying the melody, and a bass guitar guiding the rhythm. Sonic gave Amy a cautious look. He was surprised to see that her energy had somewhat returned.
“Still got a little dance in ya?” He asked.
“I can’t not dance to my favorite band!”
Sonic smirked to himself, helped Amy up from the bench and pulled her toward the dancefloor.
As the lyrics of the first verse began, he smiled sheepishly at her as he pulled her close, placing one hand on her hip and the other on the bare space of her back.
🎶 Can I call you Rose? 'Cause you’re sweet like a flower in bloom
Can I call you Rose? ‘Cause your fragrance takes over the room
I wanna plant you in my heart, ohh
So love can grow🎵
Amy looked up at her partner, a blush coloring her cheeks, her bottom lip caught between her teeth as they swayed together. Her eyes averted toward his chest, feeling her heart flutter in her own chest as Sonic spoke to her through the lyrics.
“Did you request this song? A bit on-the-nose, Sonic.” She murmured to him with a giggle.
“Whaaat? I got no clue what you’re talking about.” He whispered back, giving her a charming smile as he brushed his fingers across the soft red satin of her dress, confirming Amy's suspicions. Of course, he did request the song. And as on-the-nose as it was, it was exactly the song that perfectly encapsulated all of the feelings he had buried down so deeply for the girl that was now in his arms. If he couldn't get the words out, somebody had to. They continued to move in unison to the song up until the interlude began.
🎶I was meditating on love, and you, and roses, and...
The universe told me: “Put it in a love song...” 🎵
Suddenly, their movements slowed, the world around them melting into oblivion until it was only the two of them. As the instrumentals swelled and the band’s back up singers took over, Sonic looked into Amy’s jade eyes and saw everything he thought he could ever want in this world. And finally,
finally
closing the space between them, his lips met hers for the first time.
