Patches

Summary:

Heart makes him and Mind matching sun and moon patches.

Notes:

note: i hc heart & mind as having been pretty close before their relationship fell apart and they started fighting. this is set before then, so before they started fighting—hence mind not having the voice modulator and heart still having some of his vision.

heart- he/they
mind- he/it
and one instance of noun neopronouns from Heart’s stuffed animal

anyways… *drops this and scurries back into the shadows.*

Work Text:

Heart is bored. He's half-sitting, half-laying in the corner of his room in his reading nook (...stuffy nook? it isn't exactly used for reading), surrounded by various pillows, blankets, and stuffed animals, but he's bored. He feels motivated to do something, but he doesn't know what to do, leaving him feeling restless and antsy.

They scan the room with their blurry eyesight, blindfold off due to the dimness of their room, trying to search for something to do within the indistinct shapes. Nothing particularly jumps out at them.

He lets out an irritated noise like a squawk, and brushes his thumb over Finn, one of his stuffed animals. Finn is a koi fish with a snowy white and cotton candy pink pattern, with one dark, plum-colored patch on spots back. Finn had gotten a tear there at some point, near one of spots fins, so Heart had sewn a patch onto spot, shaped kind of like an eye, or like a leaf.

As Heart brushes their thumb over spots patch, they suddenly get an idea.

There is a hoodie of his that he's been meaning to patch up for a while... It has a small tear in the shoulder from something he can't remember and doesn't try too hard to. He hasn't gotten around to fixing it up yet, but he didn't want to just throw it out, either.

(Mind had teased them for being "sentimental". Well, look how much Mind knows now. Look at them, being resourceful)

Heart gets up from his nest in the corner, gathering the torn hoodie and then all of the supplies he'll need to make and sew a patch onto it.

He settles on a design for a pretty simple patch— a plum-colored circle with a lilac crescent placed over it, giving it the appearance of a waning moon.

As the moon sits back down to begin his project, they're hit with another idea. They should make the sun a patch, too. Of the sun, instead of the moon, so they can match! And, well— they wouldn't want the sun to feel potentially left out of the patch-wearing fun.

He gets back up and gathers the materials to make the second patch, and then sits back down to get started.

After they finish, they run their fingers over the patches, feeling satisfied in the texture under their hands. They can see the design somewhat with their limited vision, albeit blurry and spotty. But from what they can see, it looks good.

He gets an immense feeling of satisfaction, feeling a smile pulling at his face. Now, he just needs to figure out how to present the idea to Mind...

💜💙

Mind is finishing up preening Heart's wings, sitting behind them on the couch as they hum some half-remembered song under their breath. Heart likes the feeling of the gloves Mind is wearing. They're so soft

Mind wears them because of its mechanical hands. It says it doesn't want to accidentally hurt him or be too rough, or something like that. Heart isn't particularly worried about it, but they still like the texture.

While Heart is thinking about the texture of Mind's gloves and letting his thoughts wander, he suddenly remembers the patches.

Well. They figure now is as perfect a time as ever to see how Mind feels about the idea.

"(Mr. Hyde?)"

Mind lets out a distracted hum, still mostly focused on what he's doing.

"(Can I show you something? When you're done, of course.)"

"[Show me what?]" Mind asks, suspicious. Probably assuming Heart is planning something nefarious.

"(I made a patch a few days ago for one of my hoodies. While I was doing that I thought I could make us matching patches...? One for me, and one for you to sew onto your jacket— if you want. I want to show them to you and see if you like them.)"

Mind considers for a long moment, hands stilling on Heart's wings. Long enough that Heart begins to feel unsure. Something tight squeezes around their heart in their chest, like a fist. Does Mind hate the idea? Oh, they hope they didn't make it uncomfortable—

"[Sure.]"

"(What?)" Heart asks, pulled out of his thoughts.

Mind smooths his hands over some of the last ruffled feathers and then pulls away. "[I said sure. Go get the patches and the supplies and we can do that.]"

Heart feels a grin stretch over his face, turning his body towards Mind and tucking his wings behind his back. "(Really?)"

"[Yes, really.]" Mind says, sounding almost defensive. "[What are you waiting for? Come on, Jekyll, before I change my—]"

"(Can I hug you?)" Heart asks the second the want enters their thoughts. Oops. They didn't mean to interrupt, but— well, the question's already out.

Heart can feel Mind considering him. "[...Yes,]" it says eventually.

Heart does, leaning forward and wrapping their arms and wings both around Mind. Mind hesitates a moment before placing his hands on Heart's back, under their wings. Heart can hear Mind's clock eye ticking faster, as it is wont to do when he is flustered, but they also know Mind well enough to know that it enjoys the affection.

After a moment, Mind pats Heart's back awkwardly, and Heart lets out a noise that Mind can only describe as a giggle, before pulling away. "[What?]" Mind asks, narrowing its eyes at its other half.

"(Thank you,)" Heart says, and doesn't elaborate, getting up and rushing out of the room to get his things. He clips his shoulder against the wall in his excitement, letting out an omf- noise, before quickly readjusting and continuing to his room.

Mind watches in bewilderment, before shaking his head and taking his gloves off, waiting for Heart to return.

Heart returns carrying one of their hoodies on their arm and some other supplies in the other. They sit down on the couch next to Mind and set the materials down on the table in front of the couch.

"[Welcome back,]" Mind says dryly.

Heart smiles sheepishly at it. "(Hi.)" He reaches into his pocket and pulls out two patches, holding them out. Mind examines them.

One depicts a waning crescent moon, with the moon being a pale purple and the shadow covering it being a darker purple. The other is a sun, with a vibrant, light blue middle and dark blue rays— similar to the color of Mind's own eye, he thinks. He hears his clock speed up as warmth spreads through his chest.

"(What do you think?)" Heart asks, sounding almost nervous.

Mind looks back up at them. "[They're... adequate. Yes, we can sew them on.]"

Heart beams at it like Mind has just paid him a compliment of the highest order, before setting the patches down on the table as well.

"(Do you want to do yours? I know you can be kinda particular about your jacket.)"

Mind considers this. "[I think I would like for you to do it, actually. May I sew yours on?]"

Heart's wings flutter happily. "(Sure! Yeah, I like that idea.)"

Heart ends up having Mind get up and turn the lights down so that they can take off their blindfold for the little added vision it'll give them. When Mind gets back, it gives Heart its jacket and takes the hoodie Heart brought out.

They get to work, sitting in comfortable silence as they do. Mind contents himself listening to the sound of Heart's quiet humming, and Heart contents himself listening to the steady tick. tick. tick of Mind's clock.

When they eventually finish, Mind examines both of their handiwork. Heart runs the tips of their fingers over the patch sewn into their hoodie, grinning like a fool. The sight makes Mind feel— warm, and a little fluttery.

"[...My stitches are more visible than yours. Less neat,]" Mind notes, irritated at the imperfection, looking down at its jacket and noticing that Heart's stitches aren't very visible at all.

Heart lets out an acknowledging hum, turning his touch to the edge of the patch where he can feel Mind's stitches, tracing his fingers over them. "(I like it,)" he decides.

"[You're just saying that,]" Mind scoffs.

"(No, really, I do! I like the difference in texture. I can run my hands over it and feel where you sewed this in for me. And it gives it personality.)"

Mind lets out a considering noise in response. He supposes Heart wouldn't care as much about the neatness of little details, especially sight-wise.

"(What about you? Do you like yours?)"

Mind examines it again. "[Yes,]" it admits. "[The stitch job is very good. And the blue that you used complements the rest of my palette.]"

Heart beams at him again. They seem to be doing that a lot today.

Mind pulls the jacket on and looks down at the little sun patch sewn onto the upper left arm. It feels that pleasant warmth grow within its chest again. Heart seems to be feeling similar, if the way he keeps brushing his fingers against his own patch is any indication.

Mind doesn't identify what the particular emotion is, but it feels... Nice. He's glad that they did this.
