Connection lost: restarting

Summary:

“But tell me, did you sail across the sun?
Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the light all faded, and that heaven is overrated?”

Her voice cracked with sorrow. Jay then took over.

“Tell me, did you fall for a shooting star?
One without a permanent scar?
And did you miss me ..“

And then they both softly sang, eyes locked and sparkling with love.
“.. while you were looking for yourself out there?"

Nya goes out to clear her head when a familiar voice calls for her. Although he doesn’t recognise her, she recognises him.

Work Text:

Nya wandered near the harbour, the sun setting on the horizon of the sea. She always came there when she needed some peace, some closure. Times like these especially.

Old wooden boards creaked under her feet as she walked on the jetty. Wind blew through her hair, seagulls sounded from a distance. A suppressed feeling of sadness washed up in her, like the waves washed against the structure. Reaching the end, she sat down with her legs crossed. She took a deep breath, tears swelling in her eyes as she exhaled.

Crying before Lloyd wasn’t an option, not in his condition. The tears ran down her face as she stared off into the distance, her heart and throat aching. Her head dropped low, her body slowly giving up from exhaustion. A dull feeling swarming her from the inside.

“Hey uuh.. Lady?” A voice, one that made her heart skip a beat. She turned her head instantly, with wide eyes looking up at the boy.

“You shouldn’t be here- Oh, are you alright?” Jay put his taser back into his pocket, giving her a concerned glance. He was dressed in a black suit, his hair a bit longer than Nya remembered, but it was definitely Jay. She scrambled up, falling into his arms, sobbing.

“JAY!” She cried out as she wrapped her arms around him, she buried her face in his chest, tears pouring out her eyes. Her heart raced with joy, she melted into his touch, didn’t want to breathe out just to breathe in his scent. Jay stepped back to retain his balance, he tapped her back softly twice.

“Do I.. Know you?” He asked, genuine confusion slighty concerning Nya. She pulled her head away, looking at me.
“Ha ha.. Your humour is still terrible.” She said, her voice cracking at the end.

Jay ripped himself away from Nya, taking a step back and placing his hand on the pocket he just hid his taser in.
“Look lady- I don’t know who you are, or how you know my name. You’re really not allowed to be here.” His eyes locked with Nya’s, her smile faded.

“You.. don’t know me?” She asked.
“..Am I supposed to?”
“… Yeah.”

Jay furrowed his brows, he looked her up and down but his eyes showed nothing other than confusion. Nya felt her heart break a little more with every beat.

“I’m Nya, i’m your yang.” Nya pulled out her necklace from under her hoodie, something sparked in Jay’s eyes. He hurriedly reached under his collared shirt, revealing the yin.

“But- You-“ He stuttered, looking back and forth at the necklaces. “I’ve never seen you before in my life!” He shouted, fear shading his voice. Nya clenched her teeth together, she clenched the yang in her fist until it hurt.

“You are Jay Walker,” Nya began. “You are the elemental master of light-“ Before she could finish, Jay rushed towards her and put his hand over his mouth. He pressed his finger against his lips, “No one knows that!” He roughly whispered.

Nya’s eyes swelled with tears again, Jay pulled his hand away.
“I’m- I’m sorry.” He quickly said, Nya shook her head. Tears ran down her face again, and Jay pulled her into a gentle hug.

The sun vanished behind the horizon, the waves crashing against the structure got softer. Nya sobbed into Jay’s shoulder as he rubbed circles into her back.
“It’s gonna be alright.” He whispered, brushing through her hair.

“Nya-“
“Why can’t you remember!?” She whined in between her sobs,
“Why? WHY! WHY JAY.”

Her legs gave out and Jay caught her, slowly lowering to the ground. They sat down, Jay pulling her close and continuing to brush through her hair. He stared into the distance himself, feeling doom. She seemed so familiar, so important, and yet so strange to him. A faded memory, memories with blurred faces and distorted voices. His heart started to ache too.

“I’m sorry Nya.” He whispered when her sobs softened. She looked up at him, glossy eyes, filled with denial and anger, and especially pain. “I’m.. genuinely sorry.”

She kept staring at him a little longer, and he stared back, their eyes locking for a while. She let out a weak chuckle, then looked away.
“I guess water and electricity don’t go well together after all.”

“Why’s that?”
“Because you’re lighting and i’m water- And..”
She fell silent for a moment.
“I don’t know, someone once said that.”

Jay nodded softly, his eyes still glued to her.

“I think they used to.”
Nya looked up at him.
“You know, yin and yang. I don’t really think it was a shallow relationship.”

Nya weakly smiled, she took Jay’s yin and her yang, connecting them into one. She looked up at him. “It was as deep at the sea.”

Jay felt his heart pounding, something about the girl that felt so close. So familiar and lovely. He acknowledged a gap in his memory, he dreaded it, but more and more faint pictures started to show up.

“I remember..” Nya spoke again, “When you were so nervous to give me this that you trained with Kai, my brother. He laughed telling me all about it, i laughed too. I adored you.” She caressed the split between the black and white parts. Jay smiled, “That does sound like me.”

“I.. still do.” She finished, Jay looked at her but she didn’t look at him. Just at their interlinked symbol.
“Adore me?”
“Adore you.

A smile crept onto Jay’s face, his face got a little hot. “Thank you Nya.”

Darkness fell upon them now, moonlight shimmering in the sea. The seagulls from before fell quiet.

“Did you know that water holds memories?” Jay spoke after a while of silence. “I do.”
“What kind of memories do you hold?”

Nya looked at him, confused.

“You said you’re water, and i’m electricity. You’re an elemental master?”
Nya nodded.

“The elemental master of water.” She extended her hand and a blob of water rose into the air, hovering over right before them. Jay pointed his finger towards the blob, a ray of lightning shooting at the blob of water. It exploded, sending water into the air to rain down on them. They burst out in laughter.

“Lighting and water could go together, just depends on perspective.” Jay spoke, he ignited a ball of lightning and let it hover in the air, illuminating them. His insides turned, feeling almost too shy to look into Nya’s eyes anymore. They shimmered, sparkling a feeling he felt before. Nya smiled, “I- I’m sorry. I just realised i’m probably keeping you here while you have other things to-“

“No,” Jay interrupted, “I don’t have anything else to do. I don’t.. mind.” They shared a soft smile. Nya’s feelings all came flooding back, how much she missed his touch, and how badly she wanted to kiss him again. Instead, she just rested his head against his shoulder, closing her eyes and humming a tune.

A cold wave went through Jay’s body, the tune- he knew it. He hummed along, their voices a harmony that the sea went quiet for. Nya’s humming turned into soft singing.

“But tell me, did you sail across the sun?
Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the light all faded, and that heaven is overrated?”

Her voice cracked with sorrow. Jay then took over.

“Tell me, did you fall for a shooting star?
One without a permanent scar?
