Notes:

my MA in clinical psychology is taking me far in life

this fic is a spiritual sequel to both this story and this one, although neither are required reading (unless, of course, you'd like a bit of context ❤️)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION

Confidential

Name: Captain Cassian Andor

Age: 33 standard years

Date of Examination: 5 Nelona

Examiner: Dr. Leena Dangant

Identifying Information

Captain Cassian Andor is a Human male of 33 standard years of age who has served in the Intelligence branch of the Alliance to Restore the Republic for the past several years. His records indicate that he was born on Fest, and was involved in a number of undisclosed revolutionary activities before eventually joining the Alliance. Considered by his superiors to be among the “best and brightest” operatives working with Alliance Intelligence, Captain Andor has a record of high mission success behind him. He has no previous evaluation on record.

Reason for Referral

Captain Andor was referred for evaluation by his commanding officer, General Davits Draven, with concerns regarding his continued ability to serve on field missions.

Behavioral Observations and Mental Status Examination

Captain Andor was dressed appropriately for an officer of his status, and appeared appropriately groomed, if a bit haggard. He was oriented to person, place, time, and situation. His level of motor activity was normal. Captain Andor denied both current suicidal and homicidal ideation, as well as hallucinations and delusions. He did not demonstrate unusual verbalizations, and his thought processes appeared logical. Based on observations and conversation with other parties close to Captain Andor, his insight and judgment appeared to be fair.

Initially, Captain Andor presented as quiet and guarded, providing minimal responses to questions asked of him; at this time, he kept his eye contact with the evaluator to a minimum. As the session progressed, he did not become any more willing to volunteer information, often offering only silence in response to questions or openings for him to return to the conversation, instead becoming demonstrably irritable, his demeanor shifting into profound anger. It was in this shift that Captain Andor made nearly unblinking eye contact with the evaluator, which he did not relent until the allotted standard hour had elapsed. That said, Captain Andor’s affect was not inappropriate to the session, and though obviously angry, he did not become actively hostile toward the evaluator.

Interview Information

Captain Andor attended the session alone. At the beginning of the session, he was informed of the purpose of the current evaluation, as well as confidentiality and the limits thereof, and indicated understanding of this information. He agreed to participate, if reluctantly and somewhat irritably.

Upon confirming basic items related to mental status and identity verification, Captain Andor was also asked to confirm a general summary of duties related to his current position within Alliance Intelligence. Notably, he responded to the question of frequent threats against his life with a shrug (the evaluator interpreted this in the affirmative), and while he said nothing to the use of lethal methods, his jaw visibly twitched. Afterward, Captain Andor was asked to recount the events that had transpired on a recent assignment to Mygeeto. He stated, tersely, that the mission objective had been “completed,” and offered no further elaboration. When the evaluator asked a follow-up question, regarding hesitation in delivering a debrief after the assignment as observed by General Draven, Captain Andor did not provide a reply; instead, his face hardened, and, silently, he crossed his arms over his chest in a defensive posture. He did not speak for the remainder of the session, instead staring at the evaluator until the allotted time elapsed.

To gain additional information, the evaluator spoke to Captain Andor’s commanding officer, General Davis Draven. General Draven confirmed that the hesitation demonstrated by Captain Andor during the debrief after Mygeeto was “unusual,” as his subordinate is typically prompt, efficient, and thorough in his reports. Furthermore, General Draven spoke of a recent operation on Jenoport, conducted by Captain Andor and Sergeant Jyn Erso. He stated that the operation had been successful, and that the debrief and the ensuing report had been given by Sergeant Erso; while it was fully within protocol for an officer of lower rank assigned to an operation to provide such information, General Draven stated, so there was therefore no cause for inquiry at the time, he believed this to also be “unusual,” given Captain Andor’s longstanding behavioral patterns and work ethic.

Additionally, the evaluator spoke to Sergeant Erso, participant in the Jenoport operation and also frequent mission partner of Captain Andor, in order to gain further insight into the events that had transpired on the assignment and afterward. Sergeant Erso was not receptive to questioning, quickly growing agitated and stating, “What does it matter? It got done. You can [REDACTED] off now.” Sergeant Erso then left the interview without any additional comment, or further opportunity for clarification.

Record Review

To provide additional information, the evaluator reviewed the debrief notes and a mission report from Captain Andor’s first assignment to Jenoport, three standard years before the current evaluation. Records reviewed by the evaluator indicated that the mission’s objective had been achieved successfully, but mission details provided by Captain Andor at the time were sparse. Any connection between this assignment and the current pattern of behavior is, for the time being, up to speculation.

Summary

Captain Cassian Andor is a Human male of 33 standard years of age, who was referred for evaluation by his commanding officer in Alliance Intelligence, General Davis Draven, with concerns regarding his ability to effectively continue to participate in field assignments. After interviewing Captain Andor, his commanding officer, and his frequent mission partner, as well as reviewing past records that have been provided, the evaluator believes there is cause for concern in Captain Andor’s processing, or lack thereof, of potentially traumatic experiences.

During the interview, Captain Andor was unwilling to discuss both past and more recent assignments, and exhibited outward signs of agitation when asked to do so, spending the majority of the interview’s duration in silence. His commanding officer, General Draven, indicated deviations in Captain Andor’s typical behavior patterns and work performance, and Sergeant Erso, Captain Andor’s frequent mission partner, was (agitatedly) unwilling to provide any additional clarification.

Though sufficient evidence is lacking at this time to draw any firm clinical conclusions, the evaluator can see signs of strain in Captain Andor, likely accumulated from spending years serving in a difficult position that repeatedly exposes him to potentially traumatic experiences. Furthermore, the evaluator hypothesizes that an especially potentially traumatic event transpired on Jenoport three standard years prior to the present day, one that Captain Andor has not had the opportunity (or likely the willingness, given his guarded demeanor with the evaluator in the interview) to process. Continuing this type of work under the current circumstances is unsustainable for Captain Andor.

At the present time, the evaluator does not support Captain Andor’s return to the field.

Recommendations

  1. Captain Andor has not been cleared to return to field work at this time, and should not receive any assignments off-base. He may, however, retain his security clearance and perform desk duties as assigned.
  2. It is recommended that Captain Andor attend at least six sessions with a minder before a review of his status be reconsidered.
  3. Should Captain Andor become noncompliant in a session, such as by simply even refusing to answer the minder’s questions or requests for clarification, that session will not count toward one of the six mentioned in the previous item. Such noncompliance will also be taken into account in the review of his status.
  4. In these sessions, it is recommended that the minder take a patient, but firm, approach to encourage Captain Andor to express his recollections of potentially traumatic experiences on prior field missions. It is important to establish rapport and earn his trust.
  5. It is recommended, additionally, to emphasize that the importance of expressing and acknowledging these experiences has usefulness to Captain Andor beyond simply returning to field work, that preserving his mental health as best as possible will enable him to continue to serve in this difficult position for a longer period of time.
  6. If willing, it is recommended that Captain Andor’s commanding officer and frequent collaborators participate in this process alongside him. This may include debriefs with the minder, or accompanying him to sessions.
