“Hey Elroy,” he asked one night, “ever been in love?”
He’d been staring at the picture on the table for what felt like hours. In it, Elroy had significantly darker hair and was holding a woman in his arms. They looked really happy.
For some reason, he was thinking of Troy again. Maybe it was the way both of them were smiling in the photo—bright and wide, like it hurt their cheeks.
Elroy just laughed and laughed and laughed.
“Hell if I know, kid,” he said. “Hell if I know.”
