"I think Captain Marvel has a wife," Flash said, shocking everyone that was nearby and heard his words. The Green Lantern Hal Jordan nearly fell out of his chair, and across the room, someone seemed to have choked on their drink. Captain Marvel? Married? That was shocking news. The man was super private about his personal life and didn't even seem to have one. Many people thought he was a full-time superhero with no time for a normal life, so imagining him having a wife... seemed impossible.
"What?!" Hal asked, his voice a bit high-pitched. He cleared his throat. "What? How do you know this? Did he say something?" It was a bit hard to imagine the man talking about something like that. They didn't even know Captain Marvel's real name — if he had one — so how would anyone know he had a girlfriend?
The heroes present in the meeting room began to pay attention to the conversation, they all curious. Faced with so much attention, Flash shuffled his feet, embarrassed. He looked like he was about to run away.
"Uh... I heard him talking on the phone with a woman named…uh, Rosa, I think? He was apologizing because he wouldn't make it home in time for dinner."
Hal blinked, processing the words. Across the room, Oliver, the Green Arrow — it was he the one to choke while drinking coffee — interjected into the conversation. "And how does that mean he has a wife?" he questioned, receiving some murmurs of agreement. It could be anyone, but the fact that there was a woman waiting for Captain Marvel at home for dinner... those who were doubtful began to reconsider.
"That's not all!" Flash got a little excited, then whispered, "He said 'I love you too’ .'"
All the heroes in the room fell silent, thinking about the chances of Captain Marvel really having a wife waiting for him at home. Was it possible? Many of the Justice League heroes were married, Superman was an example, but they knew the Man of Steel, while the so-called Champion of Magic... they knew nothing about him.
As if summoned by the thoughts of the heroes on him, Captain Marvel appeared in the room. Everyone followed the man's figure with their eyes as he walked to a chair and sat down. Feeling the eyes on him, he raised his eyebrows, confused.
"What? Something happened?"
The heroes' eyes turned to Flash, who suddenly felt embarrassed and a little nervous again. He smiled, then ran, disappearing in a flash . No one answered the Captain's question.
Billy walked into the kitchen of the house and saw Rosa washing the dishes. She must have heard him approaching because she turned around smiling in his direction and asked, "How was the meeting, Billy?"
He grabbed a towel and started drying the dishes. "A bit tiring, but it went well. We talked about the increasing number of magic users and set up new monitoring shifts."
Rosa nodded. Sometimes Billy wondered if his foster mom really understood when he talked about hero stuff or if she just pretended so he'd never have to hide that part of his life from her. "It's good that tomorrow is Saturday and you don't have class. Did you eat anything there?"
"I ate some snacks with Cyborg, but I won't deny it if there's still some leftovers from dinner." he said, smiling. "You know, things went well but today some of the heroes were acting a bit weird around me."
"Weird how?" She asked, concerned.
"It seemed like they were talking about me, but when I asked if something happened, no one answered."
Rosa shook her head, disapproving.
"Well, it's not nice to talk about others behind their backs. If they have something to say about you, they should say it directly," she said.
Billy smiled as he heard his foster mom's words. Sometimes she was quite protective.
"I guess so, but maybe it's nothing serious," he said, trying not to make her so worried. "Maybe they saw the viral video of Captain Marvel being attacked by a cat and didn't want to laugh directly at my face."
He hoped that was it. What else could it be?
