Taiga hadn't ever really given much thought to their own self. There was never much of a reason, in their mind. Who cared about how others perceived them? They certainly no longer did.
But, they still had eventually had to face the reality that there was something just not quite right about them. Something that felt off but yet they hadn't been able to say why. When there was not much to do, Taiga had finally decided to reflect and figure out what was causing this. That was what a doctor did, after all. They found the causes to problems.
The answer hadn't been something Taiga had ever anticipated. But, looking back, it did make a lot of sense. Gender had never been... there. Had never been something they thought about and didn't see why everyone always made it such a big deal. They had just wanted to live their life and worry about more pressing matters than acting like whatever a boy was apparently meant to.
Taiga found the word nonbinary and had decided it made sense. Though, perhaps agender might be the better descriptor, but less people seemed to know what that term was. Not that they were going around telling people this. Taiga could still care less how people perceived them. Didn't care if they were referred to in masculine terms.
Though... it was always on the back of their mind to have someone try to refer to them neutrally for once. They had been experimenting slightly with pronouns. Might as well see if anything made them feel more comfortable. They/them pronouns were not the worst. Taigs still didn't necessarily care about being he/him'd though.
This all finally came to light when they decided to use this as leverage in a discussion with Hiiro. Well, if you could call it a discussion. It was a bit more like a fight than anything.
"I can't believe a man like yourself still insist on getting involved in things that don't need you." Hiiro had said.
"I'm not a man, though." Taiga replied. They were a bit uncertain how Hiiro was going to react. Not that they really cared if it was positive or negative. They just were surprised to not have a grasp on how he might take the news.
"What? What do you mean?" Hiiro sputtered out, clearly caught off-guard and confused.
Taiga found themself smirking a bit. "I'm something called nonbinary, thank you very much. I am far from a man."
"Eh...?" Hiiro just stared at them for a long time. "When did you... decide this?"
"I never decided. It's just who I am."
"You know what I mean." Hiiro glared now.
"A few months ago, perhaps. I don't remember." Taiga shrugged. "Now, if you might please leave me be. I think we both have other things to be doing."
"Can I tell anyone about this?" Hiiro questioned.
Taiga paused. They hadn't expected that. How nice that Hiiro at least cared enough to not out them against their will. That was more than they were expecting from him.
"I don't particularly care." Taiga replied. "Do as you please."
Hiiro left soon after, too bewildered to continue the fight they had been having. Taiga was quite pleased with having done that. Though, now more people were about to know and there was a chance questions would be asked to them. But, they could deal with that if it happened.
It didn't take long before Taiga couldn't help but notice a change. The other doctors had all started referring to them in the neutral and avoiding gendered terms when talking about them. It was strange. But, not something they were disliking.
