Work Text:

The din of the bustling cafeteria during school lunch was too easily drowned out, and even Naruto’s words have lost its calling effect as Sasuke had grown accustomed to its rambling over the years. Cursed by the monotony of the entire routine, it takes him a moment to register the change amidst the usual cacophony, and he had to go through a second mental screening before he caught the tail end of the conversation, gradually piecing together the full sentence.

“This is Hinata,” Naruto had introduced to the table at large, gesturing towards a small, tiny, even, presence looming two steps behind him, someone who seemed more interested in hiding than meeting new people. Sasuke almost smiled in comfort, he could empathize with the challenge she faced.

The girl had short midnight hair styled so the short bangs framed her face, painting a dramatic contrast against her porcelain skin, shimmering with a pearlescent glow, yet with an underlying warmth that softened her delicate appearance. Dark crimson flushed her cheeks and neck, hinting at a vulnerability that couldn’t be camouflaged in such a bold juxtaposition. Her round face was complemented by equally pale, soft eyes. His eyes followed through each detail, finding the striking elements a surprising match, admiring the harmony in her features, slightly impressed by the fact that they never appeared uneven or unbalanced. Sasuke struggled to find the right words to describe her clearly, although stoically trying to steer clear from the obvious, he couldn’t deny her unique beauty in a room full of such a privileged crowd, yet he only fed honest such embarrassed words quietly to the small private space inside his own mind.

In one fleeting moment, Sasuke extracted all details with a swift glance, his demeanor outwardly apathetic, though inwardly preoccupied. Holding the information to himself, he lapsed into silence, his attention drifting away from the conversation to fixate on the unassuming food on his plate. His gaze lingered, yet his eyes seemed clouded and distant, silently analyzing, betraying the distraction consuming his thoughts.

“She’s new in town,” Naruto chimed in when Hinata remained silent even after taking her seat beside the blonde, meaning right in front of Sasuke, which wasn’t much as far as coincidences go.

The table was nearly full of their usual group, yet it still lacked some crucial presences to bridge the gap and make the girl feel welcome, Sasuke wasn’t the only one predisposed to silence. Naruto, seemingly effortlessly, took it upon himself to fill that void, likely without a second thought.

“Hey Sasuke, why don’t you show Hinata your classes? You’re in a bunch of the advanced ones, so you’ll probably be a better match,” Naruto suggested, grabbing Sasuke’s arm to catch his attention, as if Sasuke’s ears weren’t already attuned to the conversation.

Glancing up to glare at Naruto for the disturbance, Sasuke welcomed the excuse working with his pretense, a nagging feeling urging him to maintain normalcy, especially as it slipped away through his fingers in a manner he failed to understand.

Shifting his gaze towards the girl, Sasuke’s expression blended into something resembling indifference. Yet, his mind as usual worked up down to the minimal details, and he worried if she was confused or lost, but his words staggered on his tongue, his thoughts held back as they silently assessed each other.

Her eyes widened as they met his gaze, their depth revealing her desperation and shame with unabashed honesty. Sasuke was typically irritated by such overt displays of emotion; in Naruto, it always came off as a lack of control and childishness. But with her, he found himself intrigued, marveling at the subtle nuances hidden within her revealing expressions. Before he had the urge to pigeonhole her into a superficial stereotype, just like he did everyone else, he hesitated, feeling foolish for even considering it, although his mind lacked any proper explanation to justify the feeling.

As their silent exchange stretched on, Sasuke found himself increasingly aware of a stiffness creeping over him. He couldn’t tell if they had held each other’s gaze for too long, but he felt ensnared by her penetrating stare, unable to assert himself and steer the conversation. Fortunately, the tension ebbed away when she released a delicate sigh, breaking the weary silence that had enveloped them along with their lingering eye contact.

Reaching into her bag, a white canvas adorned with small charms, Hinata retrieved a paper and extended it to him. “I have the classroom numbers, but I’m still having trouble finding where to go,” she confessed shyly, her voice tinged with a nervous pitch that seemed to rise with each word. Sensing her apprehension, Sasuke felt a controlled calm wash over him, coupled with a newfound desire to help her relax a little. Once again, he bit back a sympathetic smile.

Instead, Sasuke reached for the paper, turning it over to review the contents.

“Did they mention the app for your phone?” he asked absentmindedly, his eyes scanning through her weekly classes and extracurriculars. Much of it aligned with his own schedule, leaving him to wonder if Naruto had realized the coincidence when suggesting he assist her.

Sasuke looked up in time to see Hinata nodding in response to his inquiry.

“I set it up during break,” she confirmed, waving her device, a white thing chiming as the charms in the case moved between them—an invitation, an opening. Sasuke felt himself irresistibly drawn to Hinata, her easy-going nature gently tugging at his restraints.

“Good. If you misplace the paper, you can access the same information on the app,” he advised, if only to ease his own mind. Hinata’s small smile seemed overly appreciative, considering his comment was, at its core, a gentle jest about her familiarity with technology.

Looking away as he felt himself start to be distracted again, his eyes focused on the first thing in front of his eyes. Despite being stowed in her bag, the paper remained in pristine condition. Her bag, too, appeared clean and well-kept, though Sasuke reminded himself not to make assumptions about someone he had just met, no matter how curious his mind seemed to be about the details around said person.

Suppressing an exasperated sigh, he looked up and offered. “There’s additional information online as well, like the professor’s name and the syllabus, if it’s been uploaded.” He hoped his suggestion would prove helpful in case the first one was too obvious. It was hard to tell, though, when Hinata nodded in understanding, her expression was grateful and excited, despite the limited amount of new information. Sasuke wondered if she was really just the type to be easily pleased.

“We have the same class after lunch. If we finish quickly, we can take the long route and I can show you some of the tricks around,” Sasuke offered, his tone deliberately casual. It felt strange to him, this attempt at appearing welcoming and non-threatening, a departure from his usual demeanor. But he pushed aside these thoughts, focusing on the conversation at hand. “The building is not exactly straightforward,” he admitted with a slight grimace, his gaze wandering around the wooden walls as memories of the labyrinthine structure resurfaced. He had learned alone, but she wouldn’t have to.

“I’ll do my best to learn quickly, Sasuke-san,” Hinata responded promptly, her determination shining through like a promise.

Sasuke waved her off dismissively. “Drop the honorifics, too,” he advised, his tone firm but not unkind. “Being too formal around here will only weigh you down in unnecessary politics.”

Tilting her head in thought, Hinata cast a measured glance at Sasuke before surveying the table and the various friend groups scattered throughout the room. Though the lunchroom wasn’t large, the distinct gaps between parties conveyed a clear message—there was nothing casual about the way people were seated. With a nod of agreement, she acknowledged. “Thanks for the advice, Sasuke.”

As Ino arrived, loudly greeting the new girl and much too quick to make friends, Sasuke returned his focus to his food, grateful someone else would take responsibility in including and entertaining Hinata for the remainder of the hour. And if he felt eyes on him from time to time, he warned it off as the usual stares, and not once did he look up to check.

☀☀☀

Sasuke staggered to eat, taking his time with each bite as he tried to be considerate. However, to his surprise, when he finished, he found Hinata already waiting for him. It was both cute and worrying how he felt the anxiety wafting out of her as Sasuke caught the girl glancing at him from time to time, too often and quickly to be discreet, her expression patient yet attentive, indicating that she had finished her meal long before he had. Sensing her gentle kindness, Sasuke felt a pang of guilt for making her wait, but he tried to brush it off, not wanting to draw attention to his own tardiness, especially a deliberate one.

“Ready to go?” he asked, his tone unintentionally curt as he gestured for her to follow him. Without waiting for her response, he turned and began to walk away, assuming she would follow. However, as he took a few steps forward, he heard the sound of her hurried footsteps behind him, and he realized that he had been more abrupt than he had intended.

Glancing back, he caught a glimpse of Hinata’s slightly flustered expression, and was struck by a twinge of regret for his impatience. Clearing his throat, he slowed his pace and offered her an apologetic smile. “Sorry for rushing you,” he said, his tone softer this time. “Let’s take it easy, shall we?”

She nodded in agreement, a small smile returning to her lips as they continued on their way together, the tension between them easing slightly as they moved forward.

“What do you like?” Hinata asked, her initial shyness melting away into a confident attentiveness that caught Sasuke off guard at first, but he soon embraced the shift. It made sense; without the looming presence of unfamiliar faces, she could be more herself.

Yet, as the meaning of her words dawned on him, without meaning to, Sasuke frowned, disgruntled by the direction she chose. “Why do you ask?”

“I thought I’d do something nice for you, since you’re helping me,” she relayed easily to calm his skepticism. His frown deepened and in doing so, he failed to catch the way she winced catching the change in expression.

“There’s absolutely no need for you to do anything for me,” he asserted, hand held up in front of both of them with an open palm towards the ground, a clear stopper.

However, nothing seemed to restrain Hinata from arguing. Sasuke observed with interest as she engaged in debate effortlessly, almost as if it were second nature to her. It was a side of her he hadn’t expected from someone so easily shy, yet it felt strangely fitting, like it belonged to her just as much as anything else he had witnessed in the past hour.

With a turn of her head to the side, a curious gaze mingling with kindness, she stood confidently by her point.

“But you’re helping me.”

Hinata appeared to act on spontaneous emotions, a trait that seemed entirely characteristic of her. Sasuke felt a mix of surprise and familiarity, and he realized he would expect nothing less from her.

Sasuke shook his head, unconsciously stopping so he could stare at her face, both for looking imposing and easing his ability to focus on her reaction, counting on how expressive she seemed to be to reveal more information than her words did.

“I’m just being polite,” he corrected, genuine even in his aloofness. There was no shame in admitting such a casual truth, but it was clear Hinata didn’t see things the same way.

“You’re going out of your wa-” Hinata argued, flushed cheeks distracting Sasuke from the strong tilt in her voice as she tried to assert herself. Sasuke had to lean away to appreciate the view in full.

With a casual wave of his hand and a playful tone in his voice, Sasuke corrected her, downplaying the significance of something he would never typically do. “But I’m not, you were at my table and I’d be heading to class anyway.”

Yet, despite his attempt to make light of it, there was a lingering discomfort in the idea of accepting any kind of favor from her, or allowing Hinata to think she would be indebted to him in some way.

Despite Hinata’s silence, Sasuke didn’t believe they had a compromise. However, he counted his blessings, interpreting her lack of argument as a form of yielding. It was enough for him to flash a smirk, sneaking a sidelong glance at her as they resumed walking.

Under the weight of Hinata’s gaze, Sasuke felt an unexpected pressure, knowing he was being scrutinized in a way that left him feeling exposed and oddly off-kilter, like a puzzle piece struggling to find its place. Surprisingly, this sensation prompted him to steer the conversation towards the trivial. As they strolled amidst the clean, familiar walls adorned with echoes of memories, Sasuke found himself recounting tales of school life, sharing anecdotes about the colorful characters he had grown fond of over time.

Or so Sasuke believed. But if you asked Hinata she would tell you what she hears is an entirely different story altogether.

☀☀☀

It all begins innocently enough, with cut fruit.

The way it happens, it doesn’t ring any alarm bells. Sasuke had forgotten all about the conversation, lulled into a false sense of security by the delayed action of it all. Hinata was still somewhat new, but after a couple of weeks had passed he realized she had seamlessly woven herself into his routine and effortlessly integrated into his friend group. Everything seemed perfectly normal until it wasn’t.

And it all starts with strawberries, of all things. Sasuke knows how absurd it sounds, so he can’t even bring himself to mention it to anyone without sounding completely bonkers. He silently curses Hinata for being so deviously clever.

“Hinata, are these for me?” Sasuke checks, almost annoyed as he scowls at the bento so he doesn’t glare at Hinata, half a mind to be careful in interacting with soft people, half scared of their reactions.

He heard the clear cheerfulness in her voice and it deflated his anger too quickly to his taste, Hinata’s light words a comforting breeze. “Yes, I hope you like strawberries,” she pleaded sweetly. “They were the freshest fruit at the store,” Hinata added, her tone tinged with a hint of apology, as if offering an explanation for her selection.

Sasuke hummed, gaining time as he conformed to the small offer.

“Why just one box? Didn’t you bring any for yourself, or am I supposed to share?” Sasuke’s question carried a note of curiosity, tinged with something deeper—a longing for validation and inclusion that he hadn’t sought from anyone else but found himself inexplicably drawn to with her. His mind toyed with the implications of her offer, considering the infinite possibilities it could signify, all while acknowledging his own preferences. Sasuke deemed it a normal reaction, to desire things, especially from her.

“These are for you ,” Hinata clarified, and he failed to notice the blush that crept up from her neck as she shook her head. “I didn’t want any, Sasuke,” she added with a cheerful ease, a simplicity in her actions that he couldn’t quite match. Perhaps it was something about her that he hadn’t quite grasped yet, a difference in perspective shaped by their individual backgrounds. Sasuke found himself grappling with conflicting emotions—he wanted to glare until her good mood subsided, yet her bell-like voice struck a chord within him, stirring something he was hesitant to confront. He resisted the urge to meet her gaze, wary of what he might uncover, cautious of the truths he might inadvertently reveal.

He shouldn’t be letting his guard down so easily. But despite his reservations, Sasuke accepted her offer.

“Thank you,” he offered, taking one brave look at soft lavender eyes, only long enough to make sure she could see the honesty in his own, finding a reticent kindness that confused him further. With a muted sigh, Sasuke turned back to his lunch, cradling the bento box close to his plate.

Later, when Sasuke bites into the strawberries she’s brought, memories flood back of their first conversation in the corridor but also the cheeky moment from the previous day when he sneakily grabbed Naruto’s kiwis. He was a growing young man, hungry, and those school portions were pitifully small. And she noticed, of course. He might have underestimated how much she paid attention to such details, but he pushes those thoughts aside. He couldn’t let his own feelings become entangled so quickly.

Sasuke isn’t one to be rude or make a fuss over nothing.

As he meets her pearlescent eyes with each bite, he feels a warmth spreading through him.

Only later does he realize how awkward that must have looked to an outsider. It must have been some sensible embarrassment trying to warn him.

But that first day is just the beginning.

☀☀☀

“What are you reading?” Hinata’s voice broke through his concentration, drawing Sasuke’s attention away from the pages of his book. He glances up, his gaze catching the movement of the innocuous box in his peripheral vision, only to meet Hinata’s soft lavender eyes locking onto his.

Sasuke’s lips curved into a smirk as he watched her settle into the seat beside him. With a fluid motion, he extended the book towards her, offering it in exchange for the box she held. “Narnia,” he replied, their words overlapping as she turned her attention to the cover.

He opened the dish, the aroma of salted tomatoes wafted towards his nose.

Speechless, Sasuke stared at Hinata, a mix of suspicion and happiness swirling within him at her unusual choice. He longed to ask about it, but the words remained unspoken, lingering in the air between them.

“That seems older than I expected,” Hinata remarked unaware, flipping through the pages of the weathered book. Its age, evident both in its publication date and its physical condition, didn’t seem to deter Sasuke’s interest in the slightest.

“Some would call it a classic, I suppose,” Sasuke teased, a small smirk playing at his lips before he took another bite of his food.

As silence stretched between them, Hinata’s focus on the book appeared tenuous, her occasional absent glances hinting at a mind elsewhere. Sasuke was distracted by the twinge of curiosity plaguing him, urging him to delve into her private thoughts, if only to break the quietude that hung heavy in the air

Pushing his plate aside, he leaned into the table while looking at her until he had her attention.

“You’re late today. Is everything okay?” Sasuke inquired, his concern evident in his tone.

Meeting his gaze shyly, Hinata nodded. “Just some family matters. I was on a call,” she explained softly, her subdued posture making Sasuke pause, suspicious.

After a moment of hesitation, he found himself unable to resist. “Do you want to talk about it?”

With a small smile, Hinata’s gratitude didn’t need words; they both understood her feelings.

“My father was checking in on me,” she offered, seeking to reassure Sasuke’s worries. “He worries a lot about my classes, not so much about anything else,” Hinata confessed, a hint of wistfulness coloring her words, as she looked reticent right at Sasuke, a million feelings clear in lavender eyes.

Sasuke nodded in understanding, hand unconsciously reaching towards his neck, his own father coming to mind, finding an easy resemblance between their situations. “So you didn’t tell him about Sakura making you fall on your ass yesterday? About Kiba’s dog obsession for you? Anything about us?” he teased lightly, though his gaze held a particular softness.

Hinata giggled in response. “He didn’t really have the time to hear about it,” she revealed pitifully, the simplicity of her words hinting at deeper complexity.

“Good,” Sasuke comforted, his tone laced with optimism in the face of her obvious underlying hurt. “At least he won’t know the risks and take you away, hm? We shouldn’t take any chances, so don’t tell your father anything about school besides classes, okay?”

Hinata’s ensuing laughter rang out louder than Sasuke had expected for such a simple joke, drawing puzzled glances from those seated around the table. Yet, amidst the confusion, Sasuke was filled by a surge of pride. Seeing her happiness overpower the anguish, Hinata so openly displayed her change in heart, it was enough to momentarily distract his erratically beating heart, allowing him to ignore the underlying reasons behind it all as he ate up the precious moment.

“You’re right, Sasuke. I won’t tell,” Hinata vowed, her words a gentle murmur, meant for his ears alone. Sasuke chose not to dwell on whether her gratitude was warranted, instead finding reassurance in the way her features softened, a silent affirmation that he was on the right path, that he was bringing her comfort as intended.

As days melded into one another, Sasuke began to realize that each day with Hinata brought something new into his life. His attention, like a compass needle seeking true north, found its unwavering fixation on Hinata. In her presence, the world around him blurred into insignificance, each moment infused with the radiance of her presence. She became the focal point of his universe, a beacon of light guiding him through the depths of uncertainty with unwavering grace.

Which sure enough means Sasuke finds himself grappling with Hinata’s unassuming kindness, and he was incapable of handling it smoothly. But he accepts the small portions of seasonal fruits with gratitude, offering his thanks before enjoying them while engrossed in reading or observing his surroundings. He makes sure not to act in a creepy manner at all after that first time. And he watches as everything changes around him.

☀☀☀

“Hinata, care to be my partner?” Sasuke asks, extending the worksheet labeled with his name towards Hinata.

It’s become a bit of a thing between them, pairing up whenever they can, under the guise that Hinata could use some friendly company, if not always academic assistance. And Sasuke can’t help but find it amusing how Hinata giggles every time he asks, like it’s the first time she’s heard it. But without missing a beat, she signs her name beside his, ready to dive into the problems together. And each time, Sasuke can’t resist asking, simply to see that bright spark of amusement in her eyes.

☀☀☀

Some days, Hinata notices Sasuke using fewer words than usual. The subtle shifts in his speech patterns are surprisingly apparent, even for someone as reserved as he is.

Some days. Rarely, sporadically. In a manner that is very hard to keep track of. Without revealing a discernible pattern, Hinata noticed Sasuke’s tendency to keep to himself.

☀☀☀

Lunch break feels louder than ever, Hinata notes, as cheers erupt amidst the chatter when Naruto scores yet another goal. Every student seems to be present, spreading out around the court to watch Naruto approach the sidelines to stand in front of her, his focus clearly on Sakura, who has hearts for eyes, captivated by the moment. Hinata could only smile at her friend’s infatuation.

Amidst the noise, Ino’s distinctive giggle breaks through, prompting a shared moment of amusement among the girls. Hinata joins in, her gaze briefly lingering on Sakura’s joy and Naruto’s playfulness.

Yet, beneath the surface, a quiet tension lingers, a subtle charge that sets her senses on edge, much like the hushed anticipation before a storm. She turns her head quickly, feeling the strain in her neck as she seeks the source.

Sasuke’s eyes meet hers, his stare intense but fleeting. It’s a subtle exchange, one that always leaves her feeling a little flustered.

Hinata has not yet learned to decipher Sasuke’s silent looks; they speak volumes without a single word, but in a foreign language. Whenever he watches her, it’s as if a spotlight shines on her, drawing the attention of those around them. There’s a weight to his gaze, a silent inquiry that both intrigues and intimidates her. But she refuses to dwell on the significance behind his looks, opting instead to relish in the enigma, half-afraid that she’s yearning for something that may not even exist, to the extent that she’s concocting these scenarios in her mind.

As quickly as Sasuke’s gaze settles, it shifts away, returning to the game. The fading echoes of laughter leave Hinata with a sense of warmth, a secret smile tugging at her lips. An unsettling curiosity lingers within her, but she pushes it aside, content to bask in the moment.

Minutes pass in a pleasant sort of monotony, Hinata not fully grasping the intricacies of the game but enjoying the excitement nonetheless. She winces at collisions between players but finds herself captivated by Sasuke and Naruto’s teamwork, a silent testament to their friendship.

When the ball lands at Sasuke’s feet, Hinata watches as he decisively takes aim. Despite the goalkeeper’s efforts, Sasuke’s shot barely slips past, catching them off guard and making its way into the net almost soundlessly. Naruto’s exuberant reaction follows swiftly, his jubilant yell echoing through the air, audible from a distance, before the realization dawns on Hinata.

But amidst the cacophony, everything around her falls into a hushed stillness. Drawn by commanding eyes, the chaos seems to fade away, sheltering Hinata in a tranquil bubble. Because of Sasuke’s subdued response, his lingering gaze plays on her mind, leaving behind a sense of quiet contentment. Though confusion clouds her thoughts, she knows to cherish the present moment and wait patiently. Sasuke may offer an explanation later, but for now, there’s solace in the unspoken chance of it all.

☀☀☀

“I have a sister,” Hinata replied to an unspoken question, her voice gentle as she caught Sasuke’s curious gaze lingering on her. She continued signing the congratulatory handmade card with meticulous care, the details reflecting her sweet personality. Sasuke wanted to acknowledge her gesture, to express his appreciation for her openness, but the words eluded him. Instead, he found himself silently pondering the depth of her kindness, wondering if it extended even to him.

“She got first place in a piano competition recently, so I’m sending her some gifts,” Hinata explained, her smile warm with pride and nostalgia.

Sasuke’s expression remained neutral, his brows furrowing slightly in contemplation. It was often difficult to discern his emotions from his stoic demeanor, but Hinata could sense his genuine interest beneath the surface.

“She’s younger than you?” Sasuke inquired, his tone soft yet probing.

“Yes, only two years,” Hinata confirmed, her smile softening as she recalled fond memories. “We tend to celebrate her achievements, even if she’s at an age where it might not be expected. It’s our way of showing support and encouragement.”

“So you’re close?” Sasuke probed further, hoping to gain insight into Hinata’s family dynamics.

Hinata hesitated, a flicker of discomfort passing through her eyes before she composed herself. Sasuke immediately regretted pressing the question, sensing that he had touched upon a sensitive topic.

“Not really, Sasuke,” Hinata admitted, her tone subdued.

Sasuke felt a pang of empathy, recognizing the complexity of familial relationships. He watched as Hinata’s hands faltered over the card, the colored pens slipping from her grasp as her attention waned.

Without thinking, Sasuke found himself offering a piece of his own vulnerability in return, a silent exchange of trust.

“I have an older brother, but we haven’t spoken in a while,” he confessed, his voice tinged with a mixture of resignation and longing.

The weight of their shared silence hung between them, a mutual understanding of the unspoken pain that resided within their respective family dynamics. Hinata offered a sympathetic nod, her eyes reflecting a depth of understanding that transcended words.

And with that, the subject was tacitly dropped, the fragile barrier of their guarded hearts momentarily breached before retreating once more into the safety of their shared silence.

☀☀☀

In the early hours of the morning, Sasuke laces up his running shoes and hits the pavement, a routine he’s convinced himself is necessary and refuses to acknowledge just how so. It’s not just about the physical exertion; there’s something about the rhythm of his feet pounding against the ground that soothes his restless mind, if only for a moment. Naruto often tags along, his boundless energy serving as both a distraction and an annoyance, but Sasuke secretly appreciates the company, even if he’d never admit it.

Amidst the rhythmic paced footsteps, Sasuke finds himself drifting into dreams of alternate realities, where he’s just an ordinary boy navigating the complexities of life. In those short-lived moments, he yearns for happiness, though he’s not entirely sure what that entails. Yet, despite the allure of these fantasies, he always manages to arrive at school on time, feeling more subdued than usual.

The first period passes in a haze of fatigue, a deliberate side effect of his morning ritual. Sasuke finds comfort in this exhaustion; it dulls the sharp edges of his emotions, making the day more bearable. But on rare occasions, when the stars align just so, he notices a shift in the atmosphere—a subtle change in Hinata’s demeanor that he struggles to comprehend.

In those moments, Sasuke wishes he were more perceptive, more attuned to the unspoken cues that pass between them. Hinata’s somber mood hints at a deeper turmoil that he can’t quite grasp, leaving him feeling helpless in the face of her silent struggles. Yet, even as he grapples with his own fatigue and uncertainty, Sasuke can’t help but feel a twinge of longing—to be someone softer, someone more capable of offering comfort and understanding in her time of need. But at eight in the morning, he’s too tired to be anyone but this shell of himself, leaving him to wonder if that could ever be enough, to him and to anyone.

☀☀☀

“I love math,” Hinata whispers, a familiar chorus that Sasuke has heard before, though he pretends not to notice. “I really love math.”

Sasuke’s smile threatens to break through, but he reigns it in, swallowing the laugh that bubbles up within him. “Do you need help?” he offers, leaning in with a polite gesture, though he knows he’s intruding on her private moment of panic. It’s admirable, in a way, how she tries to control her nerves with positive affirmations. Some psychology training, he muses silently.

Hinata meets his gaze with a narrowed look, a silent challenge in her eyes. “No, Sasuke,” she replies slowly, her tone firm. “I love math,” she repeats, her conviction wavering slightly but growing stronger with each repetition.

Sasuke can’t help but avert his gaze, stifling the urge to chuckle. He doesn’t want her to think he’s laughing at her, but Hinata makes it difficult with the way her vexation only adds to her charm.

Silence settles between them, broken only by the rustling of papers as Hinata busies herself with her belongings, her abandoned worksheet forgotten on the desk. Sasuke knows what he should do next, but the warmth creeping into his cheeks betrays his embarrassment at deviating from the norm for her.

With a determined nod, he turns back to his own work, one hand reaching around his shirt collar, pulling at the fabrics while the other hand pushes his half-started worksheet toward her. “Will you help me, then?” he asks, his confidence waning as he tries to make himself smaller. “I could use some company while I review my problem-solving methods. Can you do that for me, Hinata?”

She sees right through him, as expected. The ensuing silence hangs heavily between them, a weight they both feel. In that moment, he realizes she’s a much better person than he is.

With a resolute sigh, she pushes their papers together and grabs a pencil—purposefully choosing it over a pen—as she begins to review her work and check in on him with timid questions.

Sasuke doesn’t love math, nor does he love many things, but he knows that working with her is infinitely more bearable, more interesting, compared to doing it alone. And if, by the end, she realizes she’s not half as bad at math as her panic led her to believe, it’s hardly Sasuke’s doing at all.

(Hinata would say it’s largely thanks to Sasuke’s support and encouragement.)

☀☀☀

The library, bathed in the gentle glow of afternoon light, holds Hinata in its tranquil embrace. Its familiar hush is a balm to her weary soul, offering respite from the clamor of the outside world. Yet, amidst the stillness, a sense of solitude pervades—a solitude she’s grown accustomed to, day after day.

As she navigates the labyrinth of bookshelves, her movements are purposeful yet tinged with a hint of restlessness. Though her academic tasks are complete for the day, a subtle unease lingers, nudging her forward with a silent insistence. The specter of obligation looms large, a constant reminder of the relentless march of time.

Today, however, fatigue weighs heavily upon her, casting a shadow over her usual composure. Her steps falter, the weight of her fatigue pressing down on her shoulders like an invisible burden. It’s a rare vulnerability, a chink in the armor of her Hyuuga stoicism. Still, she presses on, guided by the unspoken imperative to keep moving, to never linger too long in one place.

Amidst the rows of books, Hinata’s sigh reverberates softly, a transitory glimpse of her inner turmoil. In that moment of vulnerability, she unwittingly draws attention to herself—a target for the outside world to hone in on.

“Hyuuga Hinata,” Sasuke’s voice pierces the silence not long later, jolting her out of her reverie. Startled, she turns to face him, her gaze meeting him with a mixture of surprise and apprehension. There’s a pause—a pregnant moment filled with unspoken questions and lingering uncertainties.

As recognition dawns on her, Hinata’s thoughts swirl with a complexity she can’t quite articulate. Sasuke’s presence evokes a myriad of emotions—curiosity, wariness, a trace of something undefinable. Yet, she hesitates to delve deeper, to unravel the tangled threads of her innermost feelings. For now, she simply offers him a polite nod, masking the storm of emotions brewing beneath the surface.

He stands there, a picture of effortless coolness, every movement calculated and precise. Sakura’s words from their first week echo in Hinata’s mind—remarks about his meticulous nature, even down to the unruly perfection of his hair, framing his features just so. She’d never argued with Sakura’s observation then, and certainly wouldn’t now.

Yet, despite the familiarity of his presence, Sasuke’s silence unsettles her in a way she can’t quite explain. Their shared silence is usually comfortable, but today it feels charged with an unspoken tension. She hadn’t expected him to seek her out, especially after she’d watched him leave with her friends. His unexpected return leaves her at a loss for words, unsure of what to say or how to act.

With a resigned sigh, Hinata turns her attention back to the shelves, her movements more erratic than before but no less purposeful. Yet, beneath the surface, a whirlwind of conflicting emotions churns within her. She longs for Sasuke’s company, craves the sound of his voice and the insight he brings. At the same time, she wrestles with the fear of loneliness, the desperate desire to not be alone in this quiet corner of the library.

As she navigates the aisles, a silent plea hangs in the air—a silent hope that Sasuke will stay, that he’ll break the silence and bridge the gap between them. It’s a wish born of uncertainty and longing, a silent prayer for connection in a world that often feels too vast and empty. And in that moment, as she sighs once more, Hinata realizes just how much she yearns for his presence, for the warmth of his companionship to chase away the shadows of solitude.

The sound of his steps should be unremarkable, but Hinata is too interested to ignore it. But the more the time passes the worse she feels, why won’t he speak?

☀☀☀

“Hey, where’s Sasuke?” Hinata inquired the moment she stepped into the bustling cafeteria, her eyes sweeping the room before she even settled into her seat.

Naruto’s response was swift, though a curious glint lingered in his gaze. “Didn’t he tell you?”

Hinata remained silent, waiting for more information.

“He’s out on a date,” another voice interjected, punctuated by laughter rippling through the group.

Twenty minutes later, Sasuke hurried in, snatching his lunch in haste. Without a word, Hinata passed him the bento box before quietly excusing herself, leaving her own meal untouched.

☀☀☀

Months had slipped by since Sasuke first encountered Hinata, their interactions settling into a dynamic that Sasuke couldn’t quite define—was it a routine? He couldn’t say for sure. As he walked past the familiar bakery, its enticing display of cakes caught his eye not for the first time, but more meaningfully than ever. Tempting him with their soft, creamy appearance. The thought of Hinata crossed his mind, her gentle demeanor and the sweetness of her gestures lingering in his thoughts. In a spontaneous impulse, he made a long-overdue purchase, neatly packing it away in his bag, proud of this small token to reciprocate the kindness she had shown him.

Slightly cursing himself for taking so long to do the obvious, Sasuke admitted that Hinata deserved something more special than such a simple retribution, but he couldn’t wait for a great idea to come along. Even though Hinata had never made him feel like he owed her, she did choose to start something against Sasuke’s best advice. He should’ve noticed sooner retribution was in order, but he had an inkling she wouldn’t hold it over his head, so Sasuke didn’t feel too bad about it.

Throughout the morning, Sasuke found himself wearing a perpetual frown as he cared excessively for the state of the container, silently berating himself for his preoccupation with such a trivial matter. But as lunchtime approached, he welcomed the sense of satisfaction knowing he had something to offer Hinata in return for her kindness.

Presenting the slice of cake to Hinata nonchalantly despite his own feelings, Sasuke watched her reaction with a mixture of amusement and anticipation.

“Is it for me?” she asks soft and shy, her fingers drumming near the packet, unconsciously reaching out.

Suppressing a scoff, Sasuke meets Hinata’s gaze with playful eyes as he nudges the cake toward her. They both avert their eyes, a subtle exchange of glances as she bites back a smile.

“Enjoy it, Hinata,” Sasuke asserts in a teasing tone, and her resulting blush brings him a sense of satisfaction.

☀☀☀

“Would you want to be a cat for a day?”

Sasuke stared at the wall behind her head for longer than it was appropriate, his expression revealing nothing. Hinata knew he was trying not to laugh.

“No,” he replied at last.

“You’re so boring, Sasuke.”

☀☀☀

“Sasuke,” Hinata’s voice breaks the silence in the classroom, barely above a whisper, yet it effortlessly reaches his ears as the professor wraps up at the whiteboard.

“Hm?”

“What do you do on the weekends?”

Intrigued, Sasuke turns to face her, feeling the pull of Hinata’s enigmatic presence. The more he fails to comprehend, the more he yearns to unravel her mysteries.

“Video games, reading,” he responds quietly, leaning in slightly for clarity. “What about you?”

With an embarrassed sigh, Hinata’s gaze flits briefly to Sasuke’s before darting away, a visible effort to gather her courage. Sasuke observes as her hand instinctively moves towards her neck, a subconscious gesture that shields her colorful shyness as she prepares to speak—a tactic, perhaps, to mask her vulnerability.

“Studying usually,” she finally admits, though Sasuke can sense there’s more beneath the surface. He waits patiently, studying her without staring directly, attuned to the subtle shifts in her expressions. “But there’s a festival this weekend, and the girls are excited to go,” she adds, her voice trailing off as she nervously bites her lip.

Sasuke nods in agreement, genuinely pleased with the prospect. “You’ll enjoy it, I’m sure,” he reassures her without hesitation, his instinct to comfort her evident in his response.

For a while, they both remain silent, attempting to focus on the lecture but failing miserably. Hinata breaks the silence at another pause in the professor’s speech, her nervous energy manifesting in the drumming of her fingertips on the desk.

“Sakura says you never go to these things, why?” she inquires, her voice tinged with curiosity and a hint of concern.

Sasuke winces, allowing a slight grimace to form on his features, hoping his distaste might come across as humorous. “I’m not a huge fan of crowds, Hinata,” he admits, his tone tinged with self-awareness.

Hinata’s pout deepens, slightly affronted by his honesty, though she couldn’t say his admission shocked her.

“Should I not go?” she wonders aloud, though her tone suggests it’s more of a rhetorical question, a private doubt meant for her own contemplation rather than Sasuke’s awareness.

As they both averted their gazes, focusing on different points in the classroom, Sasuke contemplated ignoring the deprecating comment. It might have been the polite thing to do, but he couldn’t shake the discomfort of seeing her dejected expression.

“Hinata, would you like to go to this weekend’s festival with me?” Sasuke’s invitation lingered in the air, his eyes intentionally fixed on hers until they met. In those lavender orbs, he detected a glimmer of insecurity mingled with a growing spark of anticipation.

As Sasuke awaited her response, he half-expected Hinata to play it coy, perhaps hesitating out of concern that he might retract the invitation out of uncertainty. Yet, to his surprise, she nodded eagerly before he even had a chance to articulate his thoughts into words. It was clear to him that he had made the right choice.

“Will you take me, Sasuke? Please?” she asked in confirmation, her demeanor noticeably more relaxed. Sasuke couldn’t help but smirk, a sudden desire to tug at her round cheeks sparkling. Hinata was so endearing.

“Yes, let’s meet on Sunday, okay?”

Much bolder than Sasuke, Hinata wrapped her arms around one of his in a sort of spontaneous hug, holding him close with both hands.

“Thank you, thank you!” she exclaimed, her excitement palpable, and Sasuke found himself easily swayed by its influence, his mood bending to her whims.

The remainder of the class dragged on, Sasuke stealing occasional glances at Hinata, always finding a smile lingering on her lips—a sight he secretly wished he could claim responsibility for, though he knew better than to deceive himself into believing he was the sole reason. Aware of his own preoccupation with their plans, Sasuke acknowledged that Hinata was likely grappling with similar thoughts, it seemed only fair.

As they prepared to part ways at the end of class, Sasuke halted her just before she could slip away, stoicism meeting pure sweet excitement. For a fleeting moment, he almost lost track of his intended words.

“You’re supposed to wear a yukata, did you bring one from home?” Sasuke inquired, his tone gentle.

Hinata nodded confidently. “Will you wear traditional clothing too?” she pressed further, her gaze lingering on Sasuke.

Serenely, Sasuke smirked, a subtle playfulness dancing in his eyes. “Yes, Hinata,” he said, his voice carrying a hint of amusement.

“What color?” Hinata’s curiosity was substantial, her anticipation evident in the way she leaned in, awaiting his response.

Narrowing his eyes slightly, Sasuke felt an unusual sense of being pulled, but not to the ground, a connection forming between them that he couldn’t quite explain as he indulged in emotions and behaviors much different than usual, but which seemed much more fitting. It was a strange feeling, but he found himself surprisingly at ease with her probing questions and clear intentions.

“I haven’t picked yet, but all the ones I own are Uchiha colors,” he shared, offering a glimpse into his personal wardrobe without hesitation. “White, red, and black.”

Hinata seemed thoughtful for a moment, her delicate features scrunched up in contemplation. Then, without further preamble, she reached for Sasuke’s sleeves, her fingers curling around the fabric as Sasuke observed her actions with a mixture of intrigue and curiosity. Demanding attention, as if she didn’t have it entirely.

“Please, wear white, Sasuke,” she requested softly, her gaze meeting him before she bid her farewell and departed swiftly, leaving him momentarily stunned by her straightforwardness and the unexpected intimacy of their interaction.

☀☀☀

Message from Uchiha Sasuke: I know I said we should meet on Sunday, but Sakura just let me know they’re planning on going on Saturday, actually. Late afternoon.

Message from Uchiha Sasuke: Is that okay for you, Hinata?

Reply.

Can we go both days?

Message from Uchiha Sasuke: Yes.

☀☀☀

As they strolled towards class, the rhythm of their steps created a familiar backdrop for Sasuke’s curiosity to emerge. Their usual banter provided the perfect cover for his unexpected question. “Why tomatoes?” he asked, the simplicity of the query belying its underlying significance.

Hinata paused, her movements slowing as she processed his words. With a gentle glimmer in her eye, she reached out, lightly halting their steps. “You do like them, right?” she ventured, her voice tinged with a hint of uncertainty softened by playful curiosity.

Sasuke’s response was genuine, a rare vulnerability seeping into his typically guarded demeanor. “Yes, they’re my favorite,” he admitted, a hint of surprise coloring his tone. The touch of her hand on his forearm lingered, a subtle yet comforting connection that eased some of Sasuke’s usual reservations.

Hinata’s smile broadened, a spark of recognition dancing in her eyes. “I had a feeling you’d say that, Sasuke,” she confessed, her tone carrying a blend of intuition and playful triumph. “I figured you liked them after the first time,” she added, her words light and buoyant with pride.

Amused by her insight, Sasuke raised an eyebrow, a hint of warmth softening his expression. “So you didn’t know before trying?” he teased, his voice laced with playful skepticism, though beneath it lay a burgeoning sense of camaraderie and understanding.

Hinata shrugged one shoulder, not even bothering trying to hide how she cut the conversation short, leaving Sasuke to his questions and keeping her secrets to herself.

☀☀☀

They meet at the corner near the entrance of the park where the festival is held, varying levels of crowds forming around and revealing what to be expected as they step inside. Sasuke’s senses are on high alert since he got there, scanning the surroundings like a hawk, his anticipation palpable. Yet, all tension melts away with the first glimpse of Hinata’s face. The same way her initial apprehension gives place to a warm smile as their eyes lock, instantly putting him at ease.

In her presence, Sasuke feels a sense of belonging, a response he rarely experiences. It rattles him to his core, prompting him to tread more cautiously, mindful of the weight of his actions and their potential impact. It’s unfamiliar territory for him, this sensation of importance, of knowing that his presence matters to someone. Sasuke hadn’t realized he craved until now, and Hinata effortlessly provides it.

Despite the hesitation, there’s a certain eagerness within him, a desire to make things right by her. He navigates these fresh grounds with care, recognizing his lack of experience in matters of the heart. But with each step, he’s willing to learn, embracing the normalcy of their budding relationship and the opportunities it presents for growth and connection.

“Sasuke, hi!” Hinata’s cheerful greeting brightened the space, her face adorned with a calming smile that matched her rosy cheeks. “You’re early,” she playfully objected, her complaint softened by her good humor.

Sasuke felt his ears warm, but he pushed aside the sensation, instead focusing on the girl beside him. As expected, they both wore the same color, perfectly coordinated in both fabric and tone, creating a harmonious visual just by standing close to each other. His eyes danced along her shape, and Sasuke watched as Hinata’s white yukata billowed gently with each step, resembling the soft, wispy clouds drifting across a clear blue sky. Along the hem of her garment, delicate patterns reminiscent of ocean waves danced gracefully, evoking the tranquil beauty of the sea. Embroidered motifs of seagulls in flight adorned the sleeves, adding a whimsical touch to her attire. Hinata’s presence, coupled with the serene imagery of her outfit, made for a captivating sight. Sasuke found that it fit her beautifully.

Closing the distance between them with a smirk, Sasuke countered. “What if I was already around?”

Hinata shook her head, her knowing smile widening on her delicate features. “No one is here yet, Sasuke, I checked,” she dismissed simply, waving her cell phone between them. There was no shame in dismantling Sasuke’s feeble attempts at excuses, and her swift grasp of the situation bordered on comical.

Glancing at her unperturbed, he shrugged one shoulder before cutting the conversation short and heading toward the gates, silently hoping Hinata would follow.

To his satisfaction, she did, her laughter ringing out loud and clear, easily humored by his antics. And in that moment, Sasuke found himself appreciating the sound, a pleasant distraction from the noise of the bustling surroundings.

“What do you want to do first, Hinata?” Sasuke offered, adjusting his pace to match hers, his steps deliberate and measured. “I think we could hold off on eating and do it with everyone later, unless you’re hungry.”

“I’m okay,” Hinata reassured simply, her gaze wandering around as she pondered their options. “I was going to ask what you recommend we do, but maybe you’re not the best source, right?” she added with a newfound cheekiness. Sasuke couldn’t help but snort.

“Don’t people come to these to walk around?” he replied with a hint of sarcasm, projecting confidence as he looked down on Hinata, matching her mischievous mood. “I can do that, Hinata,” he reassured her, a mix of arrogance and jest lacing his words, earning another giggle from the girl. And it was quite obvious then, that despite his attempt to maintain his composure, Sasuke felt a subtle flutter in his chest at her laughter, a sensation that threatened to undermine his ability to tease her.

“Hinata, follow me,” Sasuke advises, looking over his own shoulder. He wanted to reach out and offer her his hand, but he felt too shy to do so. Maybe it’s her effect too.

For self-preservation, Sasuke keeps them at the edges of the bustling street, avoiding the throngs of people as best as he can. But soon enough, he realizes that all his careful planning is futile in the face of Hinata’s boundless curiosity and excitement. It seems she finds interest in just about everything they walk by. They hardly take two steps before she stops to engage with a vendor or passerby, her inquiries genuine and her enthusiasm infectious. What Sasuke initially deemed as tedious and time-consuming, he unexpectedly finds himself enjoying every moment.

Their dynamic doesn’t escape notice, with eyes lingering and occasional gentle comments floating their way. It is very unusual at first, but Sasuke adapts quickly, he can recognize the effect Hinata’s charm has on every person she deems interesting enough to talk to, and them passing kindness is the least she deserves. However, nothing quite compares to the directness of an elderly vendor who couldn’t resist remarking. “What a perfect match you two make. So young and beautiful, and you complement each other perfectly. May the future be kind to both of you.”

Caught off guard, Sasuke’s staggers, almost tripping on his own feet, momentarily forgetting his surroundings as he’s taken aback by the unexpected compliment. At the same time, Hinata’s blush blooms across her cheeks in an instant, adding to the weight or the assumption, their gazes charged as they stare at one another.

“May I interest you in some figurines, I think I have one that will perfectly match your color scheme.”

Before they can fully process the words, Hinata’s phone rings loudly, breaking the spell and demanding their attention. With a quick excuse, they step away from the bustling street to a quieter spot so Hinata can answer the call.

“Ino is calling me,” Hinata reveals, tugging at Sasuke’s arm until they’re close enough to speak without being overheard.

“Are we supposed to go meet them now?” Sasuke inquired, glancing at Hinata expectantly.

“I think so,” she replied, her fingers swiping through the group chat on her phone. The furrow between her eyebrows deepened, a sign of her concentration that Sasuke found oddly captivating. He simply nodded in agreement, not bothering to check the chat himself, his attention in demand elsewhere. “Maybe just to check on everyone, they’re all here now.”

Sasuke nods, his demeanor unruffled yet seemingly disinterested. “Lead the way,” he says, just before Hinata turns on her heel to guide them back along the street they came from.

The group seems larger like this, standing around the streets and close to busy crowds, rather than sitting around school or mingling with same aged peers, Sasuke notices. It is impossible to miss them, meaning the duo reach them easily.

Naruto is the first to see the two, breaking away and already reaching for Sasuke after a quick greeting to Hinata.

“You forgot this, man,” Naruto called, reaching into his pocket before offering the other boy the silver necklace from inside. His words aren’t particularly loud, but are direct enough to draw attention and at the same time that Sasuke tries to understand what Naruto is offering when Hinata is pulled away by Ino and Sakura.

Sasuke’s eyes flick briefly to the object Naruto held out, recognition dawning on him immediately. “Ah, I hadn’t even noticed,” he admitted, his tone reflecting a mix of surprise and gratitude as he reached for it.

“Thanks,” Sasuke said, his fingers deftly finding the clasp on the necklace.

Naruto simply waved him off with a casual grin.

With practiced ease, Sasuke secured the lock back in place around his neck, the familiar weight comforting him with its presence. Standing beside Naruto, he lets their shoulder brush in confort, another silent thanks.

“I figured, since you didn’t bombard my phone looking for the damned thing,” Naruto quipped, his tone teasing yet affectionate.

Sasuke shoots his friend an annoyed glance but opts to stay silent. He’s well aware that if he engages, Naruto will unleash a torrent of questions and chatter, and Sasuke isn’t in the mood for that right now.

It doesn’t take long until Sasuke’s idle gaze drifts a few steps ahead of him. There, amidst her friends, Hinata wears a radiant smile, looking effortlessly beautiful and content. Facing the subtle shifts in Hinata’s demeanor, Sasuke felt reassured that showing up had been the correct choice.

As the breeze shifts, Hinata pivots gracefully in their direction, her gaze locking with Sasuke’s unabashed stare. There’s an air of confidence about her now, her cheeks aglow with a deeper hue, yet she meets his eyes unwaveringly, a proud defiance in her that Sasuke silently admires.

“Doesn’t Hinata look cute in traditional clothes, Sasuke?” Sakura’s voice carries a playful lilt, though there’s a hint of mischief beneath the surface, her attempt to veil her teasing with feigned innocence falling short. As if everyone couldn’t see right through her.

Torn between Hinata’s strained smile and Sakura’s subtle teasing, Sasuke feels a wave of discomfort wash over him, a sense of being caught between worlds—too old for childish games yet too inexperienced for the complexities of romantic dynamic interactions. He grapples with the weight of silence, unsure how to navigate this delicate moment of uncertainty around such fresh feelings.

Ino, however, strides ahead without waiting for him to catch up, her effortless confidence a stark contrast to Sasuke’s internal turmoil. “I think Hinata’s yukata is very beautiful,” she remarks casually, her words flowing with a natural ease that leaves Sasuke feeling a pang of envy. It’s not just the compliment that stings, but the smooth grace with which Ino delivers it, a reminder of his own struggles with expressing even the simplest of sentiments. “I think it makes her skin glow.”

Sakura’s mischievous question hangs in the air, weighted with implication, and Sasuke feels the weight of her gaze like a physical force. “What about you, Naruto,” she prods, her eyes shimmering with mischief as she watches Sasuke closely. “Do you think Hinata looks cute?”

As Naruto brushes his shoulder with Sasuke, his smirk speaks volumes, a silent confirmation of shared understanding. “Adorable, really,” he replies, his tone playful and knowing.

Caught off guard, Sasuke shoots his best friend a glare, a feeble attempt to deflect the attention now squarely on him. He feels like a deer caught in headlights, trapped by Sakura’s probing question and Naruto’s mischievous agreement. And, most importantly, the distinctive weight of lavender hopeful eyes on him.

“I wish I could know what Sasuke was thinking,” Ino pouted, her expression a mixture of curiosity and mischief.

Considering Ino’s words, Sakura raised a hand to her cheek, her gesture thoughtful and theatrical. “Maybe Hinata should try asking?”

Sasuke’s exasperated glare at Naruto coincides with a softening in the latter’s blue eyes, now tinged with fondness. Suppressing the urge to express his feelings with a punch aimed at the blonde, Sasuke reminds himself not to count on Naruto as an ally in such situations.

Trouble, that’s what Ino and Sakura are.

“You should ask,” Sakura encouraged, her smile candid and inviting. If it was meant to be comforting, it missed the mark by a long shot.

Hinata shook her head, her suspicion evident as she regarded her friends with narrowed eyes.

“Ah, I’m not sure,” she demurred, hugging Sakura tighter, her uncertainty palpable.

Sasuke watches as Sakura leans in, her voice lowered to a whisper, sharing words meant only for Hinata’s ears. He watches their exchange, Sakura appearing confident while Hinata looks somewhat suspicious, their quiet conversation continuing before Ino joins them silently.

“Your girlfriend is an asshole,” Sasuke remarks bluntly, his frustration evident in his downturned lips and glare, before turning away from Naruto and striding off. He walks past the whispering and giggling girls, feeling irritated by their antics, and heads toward the other boys who seem more focused on their own conversations. He ignores Naruto’s laughter echoing behind him, his steps firm with resolve.

☀☀☀

Once, tranquility reigned in silence. It symbolized an escape from turmoil, from scrutiny. It provided the canvas for enlightenment, for delving into tomes and absorbing knowledge. In silence, one could explore freely, experiment, or engage in any pursuit without inhibition; silence was synonymous with a rare freedom. Its presence was weightless.

But now, it feels encroached upon. Silence, once a haven of solitude, now births a yearning. What was once an empty chamber, a sanctuary, now bears the imprint of a visage, each glance a poignant reminder of absence. Longing permeates the silence, a craving for the intangible, palpable yet elusive.

☀☀☀

Sasuke dominates Naruto in nearly every carnival game they tackle, much to Hinata’s surprise and Sakura’s mischievous amusement. The resulting chorus of girlish giggles from the group provides a lively soundtrack to their antics, shielding Sasuke from the bustle of the crowd as he navigates effortlessly through the festival.

Throughout the various games, Hinata amasses a collection of trinkets, each one handed to her by Sasuke with a proud smile. She could discern a mingling of amusement and satisfaction in his expression as she bashfully accepted them. Despite her initial hesitance to pick them out herself, Sasuke found Hinata’s intrigued response to his picks utterly endearing. Her steadfast boundaries only enhanced her charm in his eyes, as he took pleasure in eliciting a blend of awkwardness and genuine delight when he presented her with the fruits of his efforts.

Though Hinata tries to conceal her joy, Sasuke catches glimpses of it in her expressions, secretly reveling in the impact his gestures have on her. This only fuels his desire for more moments like these, where he can provoke genuine reactions from her.

☀☀☀

“So what do you think, Hinata?” Sasuke asks in a rare moment of privacy, pulling Hinata aside from the bustling crowd, while the rest of the group is distracted at a carnival booth. “Are you having fun?”

Hinata’s smile brightens at the questions, her eyes alight with genuine pleasure. “I’m having a wonderful time, Sasuke,” she admits with sincerity. “And thank you for coming. I hope it’s not too awful for you,” she adds, a hint of concern tugging at the corners of her lips.

Sasuke dismisses her worry before it can take root, shaking his head adamantly. “Don’t worry, Hinata,” he assures her, cutting off any further self-doubt with his determined words.

“I’m enjoying this,” Sasuke reassures Hinata, his voice gentle and warm as he leans in slightly to bridge their height difference. “Besides, I’ve been wiping the floor with Naruto. Bragging rights for life,” he adds with a playful smirk, his confidence evident in his posture.

Hinata’s giggles bring a smile to his face, but when silence falls between them, it’s her insecurity that tugs at his heartstrings. “Thank you for the gifts, Sasuke,” she says, her voice soft with gratitude. “But you really didn’t have to. It feels unfair to the other girls,” she adds, her words laced with a hint of uncertainty.

Sasuke reaches out instinctively, but hesitates, letting his hands fall back to his sides. Instead, he meets her gaze with reassurance, his eyes conveying more than his touch ever could.

“Hinata, no, I really don’t feel bad about excelling at something my friends have more experience in. And, it’s not like Sakura and Ino don’t have their own boyfriends trying to impress them, so you shouldn’t feel guilty either,” Sasuke retorts, his tone deliberately nonchalant to mask any hint of defensiveness. Hinata glares at him, but there’s no real heat behind it, so he presses on. “Since I’m here with you, you, who’s dressed up for this and looking stunning, I think it’s the least I should do, Hinata. If I’m enjoying myself, it’s only fair that you’re a part of it. Honestly, you’re the main reason I even showed up,” he admits, emphasizing the word “you” each time while holding her gaze defiantly, refusing to let her talk herself down.

With surprising smoothness, sentences flowed effortlessly from an ordinarily reticent tongue, Sasuke notices how much easier it is to speak openly to Hinata when they’re alone, and he knew better than to not acknowledge the subtle shift in his own thought process to getting there.

“Tonight, all I ask is for you to enjoy yourself, without a single worry in your mind,” he pleaded, a swift urge to press his index and middle finger gently against her forehead, as if to transmit his request directly to her consciousness. It was a gesture he’d seen before, its purpose clear even if its mechanics remained a mystery. Yet now, as he felt the tingling sensation in his fingertips, he couldn’t dwell on it. Instead, he focused on Hinata’s hand slipping into his, her confidence radiating through her touch. “Can you do that for me, Hinata?”

“I won’t worry about a thing,” she assured him, her voice steady and resolute. Sasuke found himself nodding in agreement, her presence having a profound effect on his usually composed demeanor. Thankfully, there was nothing more to be said; their connection spoke volumes on its own.

☀☀☀

The events of the night shone a new light on Hinata, and Sasuke found refreshing how transparent the girl was. Not one to hide her true feelings or intentions, it was simpler for him to gauge her reactions and understand where he stood. Her genuine demeanor, devoid of pretense or artificiality, made everything feel more approachable.

Being as he is, everything would be more difficult had things been slightly different. But a lot of his anxiety is mitigated, because he doesn’t have time to be insecure or second guess himself, not when she’s an open book. Quickly realizing that her reactions are reliable indicators, he gains confidence in navigating his uncertainties. With Hinata’s guidance, he finds himself traversing the complexities of their friendship with greater ease, grateful for her unwitting assistance from simply being her sweet self.

It was hard to pretend he hadn’t been affected by it.

Beneath the enchanting glow of the festival lights, Sasuke found himself drawn to the way Hinata’s features were softly illuminated by the colorful hues around them. Each subtle shift in shade seemed to accentuate her natural beauty, casting a gentle radiance over her features. As they strolled together, hand in hand, amidst the twinkling lights, Sasuke noticed the way Hinata’s eyes mirrored the shimmering glow, reflecting the joy and excitement of the evening.

Amidst the bustling crowds and lively atmosphere of the festival, Sasuke and Hinata shared playful glances and exchanged knowing smiles, their silent communication speaking volumes. Despite the myriad distractions around them, they existed in their own quiet bubble, where every shared moment felt like a cherished gift. Hinata’s intuitive nature allowed her to sense the subtle shifts in Sasuke’s mood, and he found himself equally attuned to her unspoken thoughts and feelings.

As they continued to wander beneath the canopy of lights, Sasuke felt a sense of lightness and warmth enveloping them, a feeling that seemed to transcend words. In that short-lived moment, amidst the magic of the festival, he knew that he was exactly where he was meant to be, sharing this special connection with Hinata. And as they laughed and joked together, Sasuke felt a profound sense of gratitude for the effortless bond they shared, a bond that seemed to grow stronger with each passing moment.

Moving around together in a group meant, very often, Sasuke had to settle for Naruto’s company, the girls walking hand in hand, tighter than knots in their own bubble. So Sasuke’s particularly pleased when they find an interesting performance to watch and wordlessly they pull apart, the couples in the groups settling for privacy. And although not a couple in the critical sense of the word, Sasuke finally is rewarded with Hinata’s company.

Stepping closer to each other, Sasuke hesitated at first, but followed easily each of Hinata’s leads. He guesses it’s an honest response, almost unconscious, despite acknowledging he is consciously too scared to get too close and make things weird. Stealing glances is fun and safe, concealed under the fear of being watched by known eyes, friends who will be able to tell just how different Sasuke behaves, or at least thinks he does differently.

Initially reluctant, Sasuke finds himself warming up to the idea as soon as Hinata’s small hand tucks into his own. It’s a simple gesture, yet it feels like the missing piece of the puzzle, completing the picture in a way he never anticipated. Her touch, so delicate and tender, sends ripples of unfamiliar warmth through him, like a soothing balm to his soul. In that moment, he realizes that Hinata is more than just a friend; she’s a calming presence, a beacon of light in his life. From that day forward, he knows deep down that she will hold a special place in his heart.

☀☀☀

It always starts small with her, Sasuke realizes.

He comes to understand as he lies awake in bed, his mind racing with thoughts that refuse to be silenced. It’s a familiar struggle, one that has plagued him for many restless nights in the past. However, tonight feels different. Because of the events of the day, he expected sleep to elude him once again, his mind preoccupied with memories of Hinata, each detail etched vividly in his consciousness.

Reflecting on their interactions, Sasuke understands that Hinata has a way of subtly influencing him, of nudging him towards change without him even realizing it. Her approach is gentle yet powerful, like water eroding away the toughest of rocks over time. And as he contemplates this, he realizes that he can’t fault himself for the changes he’s undergone. After all, Hinata’s influence has been gradual, her impact profound yet subtle, like the quiet shifting of tectonic plates beneath the earth’s surface.

He’ll likely regret overthinking his feelings until he finds himself expressing them through metaphors in the morning.

☀☀☀

Sunday greeted Sasuke with a sunny tint, a rare gift of a good night’s sleep allowing him to venture into the realms of dreams, a luxury he seldom indulged in. As he stirred awake, anticipation for the second day of the festival painted a confident hue over his thoughts, buoyed by the assurance of Hinata’s company.

The day unfolded slowly, each passing hour marked with a heightened sense of attention, an anomaly for a weekend accustomed to leisurely pacing. Yet, as the time for their rendezvous approached, Sasuke found himself surprisingly attuned to the clock, a testament to the eagerness bubbling within.

Arriving at their designated meeting spot, Sasuke found Hinata already there, a vision in black that exuded elegance and a hint of formality. Her attire, though heavier and more intricate than the previous day, only served to enhance her regal aura, drawing Sasuke’s gaze in admiration.

“Got you,” Hinata greeted him cheerfully, her words pulling Sasuke from his silent reverie. At first puzzled, he soon caught on to her playful jest, a smirk tugging at the corners of his lips.

“I hope you didn’t wait too long, Hinata,” he teased lightly, though inwardly pleased at the thought of her eagerness to see him, even if it meant a few extra minutes of anticipation on her part.

Hinata’s response was a subtle shrug, accompanied by a timid bite of her lip, her demeanor revealing little beyond what was necessary. “Shall we?” she invited, extending her hand in a silent invitation.

Sasuke accepted her hand without hesitation, the weight of it in his palm feeling just right, a perfect companion for the twilight stroll ahead.

☀☀☀

Sasuke couldn’t shake the feeling that the Sunday festival moved at a slower pace compared to the bustling energy of Saturday. The air seemed filled with a serene tranquility, as if time itself had decided to take a leisurely stroll. Unlike the previous day, where the streets thrummed with the excitement of teenagers and young revelers, today was quieter, more subdued.

Families meandered along the pathways, their voices soft and melodic, mingling with the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze. Conversations were hushed, as if the participants were reluctant to disturb the peaceful ambiance that enveloped the festival grounds.

As Sasuke observed the scene, he wondered if his perception was colored by his own emotions. Perhaps the slower pace of the day was simply a reflection of his own contemplative mood, a stark contrast to the frenetic energy of the previous day.

As the early night enveloped the festival grounds, the air was mostly filled with the rhythmic beats of traditional Japanese music and the tantalizing aroma of street food. Sasuke and Hinata strolled hand in hand, their black traditional Japanese clothing blending seamlessly with the vibrant colors of the lanterns illuminating the pathways.

They had been wandering through the festival grounds for what felt like hours, weaving their way through the colorful stalls and captivating attractions. Yet, it was the distant strains of lively music that caught their attention. Sasuke noticed the spark of curiosity in Hinata’s eyes, mirrored by the subtle sway of her hips as if already attuned to the rhythm of the music. Without hesitation, he tugged her by their intertwined hands, his own pulse quickening with excitement as they followed the melodic trail.

Step by step, they ventured deeper into the heart of the festival until they reached a bustling clearing alive with the vibrant energy of the Bon Odori dance. The air was electric with anticipation, and Sasuke felt a surge of exhilaration as he and Hinata joined the onlookers.

Hinata’s eyes lit up with delight as she swayed slightly to the rhythm, her movements mirroring the graceful dancers around them. Sasuke admired her infectious enthusiasm, a warmth spreading through him at the sight of her happiness.

“You like music?” Sasuke asked, though he already knew the answer, unable to resist the urge to engage in conversation with her.

“Love it, actually,” Hinata replied, her smile brightening as she spoke, cheeks flushed with a mixture of excitement and shy anticipation.

Sasuke leaned in closer, the soft strains of music providing the perfect backdrop to their conversation. “You do look really happy like this,” he remarked, his voice barely above a whisper, but filled with genuine admiration.

Hinata’s breath caught in her throat at his words, her heart fluttering in her chest at the sincerity in his voice. She met his gaze, her eyes shining with gratitude and affection. “Thank you, Sasuke,” she murmured, her voice barely audible over the music, but filled with warmth.

As the song changed, Hinata’s wide-eyed gaze and hopeful glances in Sasuke’s direction presented him with a gentle challenge, one that he felt compelled to meet despite the softness of the moment.

He waited patiently, not wanting to come across as rude, though he held little hope that things would unfold differently from what he anticipated. Yet, he also gave Hinata space, silently hoping that she would learn she could ask him for anything. He knew it wouldn’t take long for her to realize he wouldn’t say no to her, but he too was a prisoner of his own shyness. He understood that he wouldn’t be the one to initiate the conversation.

They listened to another two songs in the same manner, Hinata’s confidence wavering and resurging with each passing moment, her emotions evident even under the gentle moonlight. Sasuke noticed the subtle shifts, feeling a sense of trepidation himself as he wondered if she would ever extend an invitation. Would he have the courage to do so himself? The thought weighed heavily on his mind, knowing that he had set a precedent for himself to overcome his own reservations for the sake of honoring her unspoken desires.

He vaguely recalled hearing something about this phenomenon before, the sudden ability to step outside one’s comfort zone for the sake of someone they cared about, especially if that person shared similar insecurities. It was a fundamental aspect of human nature, one that would ease Sasuke’s troubled mind.

But just as he found himself lost in thought, overanalyzing the situation, Hinata reached out and gently grasped his arm. Her touch was delicate, barely there, yet it sent a subtle shiver down Sasuke’s spine, the sensation lingering beneath the fabric of his yukata.

“Do you dance, Sasuke?” Hinata asked, her voice soft and curious, once again tiptoeing around a topic without directly making a request. Sasuke found it endearing, the way she approached conversations with such gentle finesse.

“Never willingly, Hinata,” he replied with a playful smirk, taking her hand in his. The contact felt warmer now, more intimate without the barrier of clothing between them.

Hinata let out a wistful sigh, her disappointment evident in the way her gaze drifted towards the nearby dancers. There was a hint of hurt in her eyes, and Sasuke couldn’t bear to see it.

He shook his head fondly at the sweet girl before him. Maybe one day he would have to lay his cards on the table, openly share his promises and intentions with her. Hinata was undeniably the type to be understanding, Sasuke mused. She possessed a kindness that ran deep, but he realized she also had a tendency to not assume things that hadn’t been explicitly said.

“Do you enjoy dancing?” Sasuke inquired, subtly shifting to align with her gaze, creating a semblance of privacy in the bustling crowd.

Hinata’s pout in response was nothing short of captivating, her lips adorned with a hint of red that drew Sasuke’s attention. “Only with willing partners,” she admitted, her tone teasing yet tinged with a hint of something he couldn’t quite place. His own frown deepened, a silent acknowledgment of his failure to choose his words more carefully.

“Ah,” he lamented, playing along with her game. “I always suspected I wouldn’t be the best match for you,” he confessed, a hint of self-deprecation coloring his words, and it wasn’t entirely untrue.

Hinata’s glare felt sharp and unexpected, hitting him with a weight he hadn’t anticipated. He sensed a mix of frustration and other emotions flickering across her expression before she quickly composed herself, adopting a patient facade that seemed undeserved in that moment.

“Sorry,” Sasuke offered quickly, his hand gently squeezing hers as he sought to alleviate the hurt he had inadvertently caused. He repeated the apology when he saw the pain reflected in her eyes, a silent acknowledgment of his misstep.

“Don’t feel obligated to do things just because of me,” Hinata insisted, her voice firm yet gentle. Sasuke couldn’t help but chuckle inwardly, the weight of their unspoken tension pressing heavily upon him. She should have known by now, but she didn’t, and it left him feeling exposed and vulnerable.

He gaped like a fish out of water, struggling to confront her expectations and lay himself bare with honesty. He was torn between the fear of revealing too much and the discomfort of pretending otherwise. His personality was as complex and ever-changing as the shifting eras, his beliefs as fragile as his desire to see her smile and feel her joy. He had to tell her.

But he knew it was better to table the conversation for a later, more opportune moment, Sasuke seized the changing song as an opportunity. With a determined resolve, he pulled Hinata towards the open space reserved for dancing partners, silently urging her to join him. He was willing to make a fool of himself if it meant bridging the gap created by their messy exchange.

It wouldn’t be the first time Hinata’s kindness felt undeserved, but Sasuke wanted it all the same. And as they swayed to the rhythm of the music, he felt a sense of gratitude for her unwavering patience and understanding.

In that moment, as they twirled beneath the soft glow of lanterns, Sasuke knew that he was exactly where he was meant to be—by Hinata’s side, swept up in the magic of the festival and the enchanting melody of the music.

Couples and groups of dancers swayed gracefully to the hypnotic rhythm, their movements bathed in the soft glow of the astral audience overhead. Hinata’s eyes sparkled with delight as she watched, her cheeks tinged with a faint blush from the excitement of the moment. Sasuke felt a sense of warmth spread through him as he observed Hinata’s joy. Without a word, he gently tugged at her hand, silently pulling her closer.

Hinata’s gaze met his, and a soft smile graced her lips as the space between them diminished.

Stepping in the circle of dancers, their movements tentative at first as they tried to match the rhythm of the music. But soon, guided by the collective energy of the crowd, they found their stride, moving in sync with each other and the pulsating beat.

Their dance was a silent conversation, a delicate exchange of glances and gestures that spoke volumes without the need for words. Sasuke’s hand found its place on Hinata’s waist, drawing her closer as they swirled and twirled beneath the night sky.

In that moment, surrounded by the infectious energy of the festival and the warmth of each other’s presence, Sasuke and Hinata felt a deep connection blossoming between them. It was a connection forged not only by the shared experience of the dance but by the unspoken understanding and affection that had been growing between them since the beginning.

As the music reached its crescendo and the dance came to an end, Sasuke and Hinata lingered in each other’s arms, their hearts beating in perfect harmony. In the soft glow of the lanterns, amidst the laughter and chatter of the festival, they shared a moment of quiet contentment, knowing that their journey together had only just begun.

☀☀☀

As they strolled through the festival grounds once again, the energy of the dance still lingering in the air, Sasuke felt a sense of contentment wash over him. The rhythmic pulse of the music echoed in his ears, and the vibrant colors of the lanterns cast a warm glow over the bustling crowds.

Breaking the comfortable silence between them, Sasuke proposed. “We should meet more often on the weekends,” his tone was casual yet earnest.

Hinata tilted her head slightly, a curious expression crossing her features. “I thought you didn’t like to go out,” she remarked suspiciously, recalling his earlier reluctance to join in the festivities.

Sasuke chuckled softly, his mood light. “I don’t like crowds, Hinata, but I like being outside just fine,” he explained, his eyes scanning the bustling surroundings. “Besides, I often drag Naruto to go on runs or explore some place or another. It’ll be good to have another company. Naruto annoys me too often,” he added with a smirk, knowing full well that Hinata understood his jest.

Hinata’s lips curved into a smile at his playful remark. “What if I’m not the kind of person to go hiking?” she countered, her tone teasing yet genuine.

Sasuke shrugged nonchalantly, feeling a sense of warmth at their easy banter. “You don’t seem like the kind of person to back down from a challenge,” he confidently remarked, his gaze meeting hers with a hint of admiration.

Hinata’s smile widened at his words, a blush dusting her cheeks as she realized the underlying sentiment behind them. “I suppose you’re right,” she admitted, feeling a surge of warmth at the thought of embarking on adventures with Sasuke by her side. It felt almost too good to be true.

As they meandered through the bustling festival, their hands occasionally brushing amidst the lively chaos, a sudden disturbance caught Sasuke’s attention. The cacophony of laughter and music surrounded him, the vibrant colors of the lanterns casting a warm glow over the bustling crowds. But beneath the festive atmosphere, an undercurrent of unease lingered in the air.

He turned his head too quickly, his heart pounding in his chest as his eyes scanned the faces in the crowd, searching for the source of the disturbance. Amidst the lively chatter and crowd, Sasuke couldn’t shake the feeling of foreboding that had settled in the pit of his stomach. And then, amidst the shifting sea of faces, he caught a glimpse—a fading shadow that seemed both familiar and otherworldly.

Dark hair, piercing gaze, the phantom presence ignited a storm of conflicting emotions within him. His breath caught in his throat, a surge of longing and anguish flooding his senses as he grappled with the possibility of what he had just glimpsed. The ache of absence tore through him like a jagged wound, leaving him vulnerable amidst the jubilant revelry.

In a fleeting heartbeat, hope surged within him, but the swiftly shifting scene shattered any possibility of reality matching his desires. What he thought he glimpsed dissolved into wisps of imagination, leaving behind only the stark void of their absence, now cruelly filled with illusions. Reality crashed upon him with merciless force, forcing him to confront the bitter truth of their disappearance and the vast chasm it had carved in his world. His heart hammered in his chest, each beat a painful reminder of the person he yearned for, the loneliness that had become his constant companion. The weight of the absence pressed down upon him like a suffocating shroud, threatening to overwhelm him beneath its unbearable burden.

As he stood amidst the swirling throng, a solitary figure adrift in a sea of celebration, Sasuke felt the full force of his grief wash over him. The agony of the absence was a tangible presence, a relentless torment that threatened to consume him whole. And as he stood there, lost in the tumult of his emotions, he knew that he would carry the pain with him until the end, a constant reminder of the bond they had shared and the void left in its wake.

Hinata noticed the sudden change in Sasuke’s demeanor, the tension that had crept into his body, and she reached out to him, her gentle touch grounding him in reality.

“Sasuke, are you okay?” she asked, her voice laced with concern.

Sasuke’s eyes darted around nervously, his breath coming in short, shallow gasps. “I... I thought I saw someone,” he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.

Hinata squeezed his hand reassuringly, her presence a comforting anchor in the midst of his turmoil. “It’s okay, Sasuke,” she murmured, guiding him towards a nearby bench. “Take deep breaths. You’re safe here.”

Sasuke nodded, his hands trembling slightly as he tried to steady his breathing. He didn’t realize they moved, but he had half a mind to understand when he felt delicate hands pressuring his shoulders until his legs touched a sea and he sank onto the bench beside Hinata, his head spinning with a whirlwind of emotions.

Hinata wrapped her arms around him, pulling him close to her chest, offering him the solace of her embrace. Together, they sat in silence, the only sound the soft murmur of the festival crowd and the steady rhythm of their breathing.

In that moment, as Sasuke clung to Hinata, seeking refuge from the storm raging within him, he felt a profound sense of gratitude for her presence. She would be his rock, his steady hand in the chaos of his mind, and he knew that he was lucky to have her by his side.

“Sometimes I think I can never be happy,” Sasuke admitted, his voice trembling with vulnerability as he laid bare his inner turmoil to Hinata.

Her frown didn’t feel like judgment, but rather a silent invitation for him to share more if he wished. She held the space between them with gentle understanding, her hands a comforting presence on his body.

“Why?” she inquired softly, her voice matching his own subdued tone, her hands offering silent support.

Sasuke recoiled inward, curling into himself as if seeking refuge from his own words, drawing closer to Hinata until he could bury his face in the curve where her shoulder met her neck. “I’m just a really unlucky person,” he explained, his words tinged with resignation. “Believe me when I say it’s better not to delve into the details tonight.”

Hinata nodded in comprehension, sensing the weight of what remained unspoken and willing to wait for Sasuke to share at his own pace. Her expression shifted into one of deep contemplation, her brows furrowing slightly as she weighed her words before responding to Sasuke’s somber confession.

“It won’t always be easy,” she conceded, her tone gentle yet unwavering. “But even in the midst of struggles, Sasuke, if you can’t always be happy I do hope you always feel loved.”

To Sasuke’s wounded heart, her words sounded almost like a cruel jest, but the strength in her gaze challenged him to reconsider, to break free from the vicious punitive cycle he often trapped himself in, where dark waters drowned out feelings of being unwanted and abandoned, obscuring the bigger picture of his life. Beneath the veil of her affection, he was reminded of the blessings he had in his life: Naruto’s voice echoed in his mind, a reminder of unwavering support. Sakura’s gentle touch lingered like a soothing balm on his weary soul. And then there were the nights when Suigetsu, with his feigned insomnia masking a caffeine-fueled reality, would stay up just to keep Sasuke company, ensuring he wouldn’t be left to battle his demons alone. And Hinata, of course.

After a moment of silent contemplation, Sasuke nodded, accepting Hinata’s kindness and finding solace in the warmth that filled the void within his chest, overshadowing the earlier suffocating despair.

“And I’ll do what I can to help,” Hinata added, her offer of assistance catching Sasuke off guard.

Speechless, Sasuke found himself unable to articulate the depth of his gratitude, knowing deep down that Hinata had already done more for him than he could ever express.

“I think you need the darkness to appreciate the light,” Hinata says, almost too candidly. “Without experiencing the bad, how can we recognise the good?”

He can’t answer, so the question floats in the air between them as if it was rhetorical. And maybe it was. If it was her objective or not, she threw him in deep thought, his mind going a mile a minute in stark comparison and revision of both tormenting and comforting memories.

In a moment that feels both fleeting and eternal, Sasuke finds himself enveloped in the depths of Hinata’s lavender eyes, his senses awash with tranquility. He’s unsure who initiated the kiss, but suddenly he’s keenly aware of the softness and warmth of her lips against his own. At first, it’s a tentative meeting, their breaths mingling as they both close their eyes, hesitant to confront the implications of this intimate act.

But as Hinata’s weight presses against his shoulders, her efforts to match his height filling him with newfound courage, Sasuke is emboldened by the electric sensation coursing through his skin where her fingers touch him. It’s a feeling he wants to chase endlessly.

Drawing back slightly, he seeks her gaze, wanting to ensure she’s fully welcoming and willing before diving back in. Their lips meet again, Sasuke’s movements more purposeful now, his tongue venturing forward to explore, taste, and tease. Each moment is savored, each touch a testament to their growing desire.

There’s a perverse sort of pleasure in the way Hinata responds to him, the way her body tenses and her breathing quickens under his touch. He revels in the way she squirms, the way she tightens under his hand, finding comfort and reassurance in their shared intimacy. With each kiss, each caress, they welcome each other’s touch, allowing themselves to be swept away by the intense need to be constantly reaching for each other.

“Cinnamon rolls?” Hinata’s voice was a soft whisper, but the excitement in her eyes was impossible to miss. Sasuke couldn’t hold back a spontaneous grin at her enthusiasm.

“Yep, straight from the pink-haired fairy’s kitchen,” he teased, nudging the box of pastries closer to her.

Hinata’s face lit up, and she reached eagerly for one of the treats, but Sasuke gently intervened, his hand closing around her wrist with a playful tug as he pulled the box back towards his side of the table.

“Let’s save dessert for later, baby?” he suggested with a smile, wanting to ensure they enjoyed their meal first.

The endearment slipped out naturally, catching Sasuke by surprise. He shook off his initial panic and offered a warm smile as he watched the adorable blush spread across Hinata’s cheeks. She quickly returned her focus to her lunch, her bottom lip slightly pouting in a charming display of defeat.

Sasuke only resisted a second, before sighing and offering her the open box back. “Whatever makes you happy,” he reassured.

Hinata didn’t hesitate, eagerly stuffing her cheeks with the creamy bread, her eyes shining with happiness as she glanced fondly at Sasuke.

☀☀☀

The sun was setting, casting a warm golden glow over the quiet neighborhood where Hinata lived. Hinata and Sasuke sat together on the steps leading up to her front door, the weathered wood beneath them worn smooth from years of use. It should have been a private moment, but the presence of Ko, Hinata’s guardian, sitting on the veranda above kept a careful eye on their activity, a silent sentinel guarding their every move.

Sasuke felt a twinge of frustration at the unspoken surveillance, finding it unnecessary and stifling. He found Ko’s presence annoying, a reminder of the strict dynamics around the Hyuuga clan. But he also knew that being allowed around Hinata was a privilege, and he was willing to tolerate Ko’s watchful gaze for her sake. Besides, he knew that Hinata felt confident that Ko was respecting their wishes to keep their relationship a secret from her father.

Sasuke spoke in a quiet voice, leaning close enough for Hinata to hear but not so close as to attract unwanted attention. “About the other day,” he began tentatively, his words hanging in the air like fragile threads.

Hinata looked up at him, her expression kind and patient. Without a word, she extended her hand towards him, her palm open in an invitation. Drawing strength from her gentle touch, Sasuke let his fingertips trace invisible patterns on her palm, a subtle interaction that helped to calm his racing thoughts.

“I know you must be curious,” he continued, his gaze dropping to their intertwined hands.

Hinata shook her head immediately, her eyes meeting Sasuke’s with understanding. She didn’t need an explanation, not right now.

Sasuke smiled at her, grateful for her understanding. He leaned in, pressing a quick kiss to the side of her face. “It’s okay to want to know,” he conceded, his voice barely above a whisper. “And I promise I’ll explain soon, okay?”

Hinata blushed at the gentle touch, feeling a warmth spread through her at his words. She almost reached for his cheek, wanting to feel the tingling sensation she was sure he felt, but she didn’t want to break the moment.

“Take your time,” Hinata reassured him, leaning forward to return the gesture, her lips brushing against the skin of his cheek.

Their tender moment was interrupted by a pointed clearing of an elder’s throat from above, reminding them of the watchful presence of Ko. With a shared glance and a knowing smile, Hinata and Sasuke reluctantly pulled away from each other, their private moment coming to an end.

☀☀☀

Hinata sat cross-legged on the grass, her gaze fixed on the vibrant blooms scattered across the field. “I like yellow and red and lavender,” she revealed softly, a gentle smile gracing her lips.

Sasuke, sitting beside her, could only pleasantly watch her with a mixture of fascination and uncertainty. “You like every color, and you like every flower, and every bird. Do you like every person as well?” he pressed, his voice tinged with a hint of insecurity.

Hinata turned to him, her expression serene yet earnest. “No, I only like you.”

“Why?” Sasuke asked, his curiosity piqued as he searched her eyes for answers.

Hinata’s brow furrowed slightly, a subtle shift in her demeanor that left Sasuke feeling unsettled. Before he could decipher her expression, she buried her face in his chest, her movements too quick for him to interpret.

Caught off guard by her sudden closeness, Sasuke hesitated for a moment before tentatively wrapping his arms around her. His hand found its way to the nape of her neck, seeking to offer comfort in the midst of their intimate exchange.

“You are very kind, attentive, and patient, Sasuke,” Hinata began, her voice soft yet steady as she spoke. “Being liked by someone as genuine as you feels like a precious gift. It’s a kind of love that understands whatever language my heart chooses to speak, and seeks refuge in the arms that offer solace in times of need. With you, there is never doubt, Sasuke.”

As her words washed over him, Sasuke felt a warmth spread through his chest, a reassurance that perhaps he wasn’t as lost in the complexities of their relationship as he had feared. With Hinata by his side, he found solace in the simple certainty of her affection, a beacon of light in the darkness of his doubts.

☀☀☀

“Come closer, Sasuke,” Hinata asks softly, leaning in to bridge the small distance between their chairs. Sasuke obediently shifts his position, his eyes flickering with curiosity as Hinata holds out her phone, the screen reflecting them through the camera app.

His expression remains impassive, if a little intrigued, as Hinata clicks a couple times before returning to a more comfortable position.

“Who are these for?” Sasuke inquires, his tone neutral yet tinged with a hint of genuine interest. He’s always been curious about Hinata’s past, her family, and the people who matter to her, even if he seldom voices it.

Hinata’s smile is soft as she glances up from her phone, her eyes meeting Sasuke’s with a knowing look. “My friend Tenten,” she reveals cheerfully, her voice carrying a warmth that belies the simplicity of her words. “She was asking if I made friends already, so I had to show her.”

Sasuke hummed, half interested and half playing cool. In his mind, Hinata had nothing to worry about on that front, despite being on the shy side. She was charismatic enough that all his friends naturally gravitated towards her, welcoming in just a few days, Sasuke included to everyone’s surprise, his own especially. But it left him pensive, aware of the significance of Tenten’s connection to Hinata’s family, particularly her cousin Neji. It’s a subtle detail, but one that doesn’t escape his notice.

“I think the girls might have been a better choice to convince her, don’t you think?” he comments casually, a hint of playful teasing lacing his words.

Hinata laughs softly, a melodic sound that fills the air around them. Despite Sasuke’s stoic demeanor and cold choice of words, she can sense the underlying curiosity and genuine concern in his words, and it warms her heart.

“She is my cousin’s girlfriend,” she offered, her tone gentle yet laden with significance, inviting Sasuke to piece together the implications on his own.

His expression remained stoic, but behind the mask of indifference, a flicker of understanding danced in Sasuke’s eyes as he met Hinata’s gaze. It was a silent acknowledgment, a tacit agreement that there was more to her words than met the eye.

Yet, no further explanation followed, leaving Sasuke grasping at fragments of incomplete information. The puzzle Hinata presented remained unsolved, a tantalizing mystery that teased at the edges of his comprehension, as he felt like there was something to be understood by the way Hinata smiled, serene and knowing, leaving him intrigued yet excluded from her inner thoughts.

☀☀☀

Hinata’s footsteps faltered as she approached the lunch table, her eyes scanning the familiar faces before landing on the conspicuous absence of Sasuke. “Where’s Sasuke?” she inquired, her tone tinged with worry, her gaze instinctively seeking out the empty space where he should have been seated.

Naruto’s response was casual, almost dismissive, as he continued to focus on his meal. “On a date,” he replied nonchalantly, as if it were the most ordinary thing in the world.

A surge of frustration and concern swept through Hinata, her glare directed at no one in particular. With her lunch forgotten, she pivoted on her heel, her movements swift and purposeful as she retrieved her cellphone. Dialing Sasuke’s number with practiced ease, she couldn’t suppress the urgency in her voice. “Sasuke, where are you?” she asked, her words laced with a sense of urgency that she couldn’t quite conceal.

His response came through the line, calm and relaxed, betraying none of the urgency she felt. “Gym, come meet me?” he suggested casually, oblivious to the turmoil in Hinata’s voice.

☀☀☀

As the final bell rang, signaling the end of another school day, Sasuke found himself stretched out on the grassy field, basking in the tranquility that enveloped him through the late spring wind. Thoughts of looming homework assignments danced in his mind, but for now, he allowed himself to simply enjoy the moment of peace.

His solitude was soon interrupted by the arrival of Sakura, her presence announced by the familiar sound of determined footsteps. Sasuke always admired the confidence in her stride, a stark contrast to his own reserved demeanor. As she settled beside him, he noticed the effortless grace with which she moved, a quality that never failed to impress him. However, it also never failed to amuse him, as he contrasted her fluid movements with the comically clumsy antics of Naruto.

At first, if she noticed his smirk, she didn’t mention it. The ensuing silence left Sasuke feeling apprehensive as Sakura avoided meeting his gaze, her attention seemingly elsewhere. Then, without warning, she playfully bumped her shoulder against his, catching him off guard. It was a rare physical gesture between them, touch typically reserved for moments of comfort rather than their usual banter and teasing.

Sasuke felt a spark of anticipation at the unexpected contact, wondering what had prompted this sudden shift in their interaction.

“Sasuke, I’m about to do you a huge favor, okay?” Sakura declared softly, her voice a mixture of seriousness and mischievousness. Sasuke arched a single eyebrow, silently pondering what could warrant this unexpected display of gentleness from Sakura. Her words lingered in the air, stoking his curiosity as he awaited her to continue. “You should know, you’re basically dating Hinata. Please, do something about it,” Sakura urged, her tone laced with sincerity. Sasuke’s first thought was she had no business sounding so hopeful.

Despite his surprise, Sasuke could only chuckle at her audacity, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. Deep down, he appreciated Sakura’s concern, even if he wasn’t quite ready to acknowledge it.

“Don’t worry about me,” he replied curtly, his tone lacking any malice as they exchanged knowing glances. “You’re actually a bit late.”

His nonchalant response sparked Sakura’s curiosity, and she leaned in, whispering urgently. “Oh my god,” Sakura whisper-yelled, unable to hide her bubbling excitement. “Did something happen?”

Sasuke’s frown deepened. “Quit being nosy,” he advised, trying to brush off her inquiries.

“As if I don’t know you’re dying to talk about it,” Sakura retorted, refusing to be deterred.

Sasuke rolled his eyes, trying to maintain his composure. “As if you’d be the first person I’d go to if I wanted to talk about it,” he replied in the same dry tone. “Which I don’t, by the way, I really don’t want to talk about it.”

Sakura wasn’t convinced. “Maybe Naruto is too dumb to notice things, but you won’t fool me so easily.”

Sasuke smirked at her persistence. “You’re being a jerk to your own boyfriend, and you want to talk about my love life?” he teased.

Sakura waved off his comment, undeterred. “What love life, Uchiha Sasuke?” she pressed, her focus latching onto his choice of words, probing the small opening he had left in his usually guarded demeanor.

Sasuke chuckled, shaking his head. “Fuck off, Sakura,” he laughed, feeling a small sense of relief at their banter, though he sensed he was quickly reaching his limit against her relentless persistence. As she continued to press him, Sasuke admired her determination, even if it meant he might have to surrender before she did, his pleas falling on deaf ears.

Sakura, staying true to her determined nature, showed no signs of backing down. “Noooo,” she protested, her grip tightening on his arm as she demanded his attention, she also avoided any chance of him running away from the conversation. With her excitement bubbling over, she pleaded. “Please, tell me!!!”

Internally, Sasuke felt a mix of amusement and exasperation, marveling at Sakura’s unwavering enthusiasm and very girly behavior. Despite his initial reluctance to share, he found himself drawn into her infectious energy, a part of him secretly enjoying the playful exchange despite his outward protestations.

Sasuke sighed, knowing Sakura wouldn’t let it go. “Why don’t you go ask her about it?” he suggested, hoping to shift the focus away from himself.

Sakura arched an eyebrow, a mischievous glint in her eyes as she teased him. “How do you know she hasn’t?” she countered, a smirk playing on her lips.

Sasuke narrowed his eyes, feeling a sense of unease creeping in. “Did she?” he pressed, suspicion coloring his tone.

Sakura’s grin widened, sensing she was getting closer to the truth. “Maybe,” she teased, aware of Sasuke’s desire to discuss the matter further. “But I know I wanna hear it from you, and I know that you wanna talk to me, so stop playing, Sasuke,” she urged, nudging him with her shoulder once again.

“You’re a pain in my ass,” Sasuke grumbled, returning the nudge.

Sakura stared at him, waiting expectantly for him to open up.

Sasuke hesitated, the weight of his thoughts pressing down on him. Memories flooded his mind, stirring up emotions he had tried to bury. Before he could stop himself, he found himself leaning into Sakura, his head dropping onto her shoulder as he confessed. “She’s so fucking cute.”

Sakura’s laughter echoed in the air, filled with genuine warmth and excitement. Without hesitation, she wrapped her arms around Sasuke, squeezing him in comfort and joy. Finally, Sasuke let himself unwind, appreciating Sakura’s understanding and support. The words spilled from his lips with a confidence he hadn’t anticipated, but amidst the uncertainty, one thing remained clear: his feelings for Hinata.

☀☀☀

“You weren’t at lunch again,” Hinata pointed out, starting with the obvious. “They said you had a date,” she added, iffy about the words, her stomach a little nauseous.

The gym bleachers were unusually quiet, the only sound being the soft squeak of shoes against the polished floor as Sasuke and Hinata sat side by side, their conversation taking on a surprisingly intimate tone.

“I was on a call with my psychologist,” Sasuke explained, his voice open and earnest, his demeanor inviting Hinata to trust him completely.

Hinata let out a small sigh, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment as she struggled to find the right words. “I got jealous,” she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. Despite feeling vulnerable, she knew she owed Sasuke honesty in return for his openness.

Sasuke’s response was immediate and understanding. “It’s okay, I’m sorry I made you worry,” he said, his tone sincere. “Those assholes have no idea what shit sounds like from outside their brains. I’m sorry.”

Hinata felt a wave of relief wash over her at his apology. “It’s okay,” she replied softly, her heart swelling with gratitude for Sasuke’s understanding.

They locked eyes for what felt like an eternity. In that moment, without the need for words, Hinata’s mere presence provided a sense of solace that words couldn’t express. Sasuke felt a deep sense of gratitude wash over him.

“Is everything okay?” Hinata finally asked, her warm hands cradling Sasuke’s face, their entire focus on each other. The gentle touch was a sweet display of affection and intimacy.

Hinata didn’t need to point out the urgency of the call, or how it had intruded upon his time, possibly disrupting his class. She didn’t need to mention the tiredness etched into his features, the weariness evident in his eyes and the faint blush on his cheeks. Nor did she need to draw attention to the dark circles under his eyes, or the fact that he had been uncharacteristically quiet in recent days.

But Hinata noticed. She noticed how he would seek her out with small touches whenever they were in the same room, and now, she mirrored his actions, reaching out to him in his moment of vulnerability. She didn’t need to expose his vulnerabilities because Sasuke knew she cared for him deeply, and they shared a level of trust and understanding that Hinata had longed for her entire life.

“Today feels particularly rough,” he confessed, his voice quivering as he tried to mask his pain with a smile.

“I missed having you around this morning too. Tuesdays always seem to drag on,” Hinata admitted, her concern palpable in her voice. The thought of being apart for the entire morning unsettles her, especially on such a challenging day.

His smile perked up slightly, and he couldn’t resist stealing a kiss on her cheek. “I didn’t want to burden you with this,” he confessed, a hint of apology creeping into his tone.

Hinata shook her head softly, dismissing any need for apology. “You don’t have to apologize for leaning on me,” she reassured him.

“And you can’t fault me for wanting to protect you, Hinata,” he countered gently.

“If talking to me would help, I’m here for you,” she offered, her words infused with genuine warmth and support.

Sasuke sighed inwardly, a mix of reluctance and exasperation washing over him, though he kept it to himself. Gently, he wrapped his arms around her waist, drawing her closer until he could press a kiss to the top of her head. He couldn’t help but notice how her hair had grown longer since they first met, cascading past her shoulders and brushing against his chest. It was a small change, yet somehow it seemed to symbolize the monumental shift she had brought into his life, upending his world in ways he never imagined.

“I did promise to tell you,” he admitted, more to remind himself than anything else. “I’m sorry it took me so long.”

Hinata squeezed his neck softly, her touch offering silent comfort as she patiently waited for him to continue.

She had pieced together fragments of information over time, trying to understand the depths of his inner turmoil. The memory of that day at the festival lingered in her mind, the brief glimpse of panic in his eyes when he thought he saw someone familiar. She had noticed the amulet he always carried, bearing the crest of his clan, and the somberness that clouded his expression whenever his brother was mentioned. And then there were the photographs she had stumbled upon, images of a boy bearing a striking resemblance to Sasuke, sharing the same family name, and excelling in academic endeavors, particularly in research projects focused on homegrown produce, registers of how words boasting about a new species of sweet tomatoes.

Sasuke introduced shakily, his voice tinged with vulnerability as he put distance between them. With trembling hands, he unclasped his necklace, offering Hinata the opened clasp of the amulet. “This is Uchiha Itachi,” he explained softly. “I was worried when you didn’t ask about it, but I’m glad you didn’t... I’m not sure what I would have been able to tell you then. Sorry.”

Hinata nodded in understanding, her expression filled with compassion. She held the silver necklace reverently in her open palm, but her gaze remained fixed on Sasuke’s face, silently offering him her unwavering support.

“Unfortunately,” Sasuke began, his voice laden with emotion. “He has been missing for two and a half years.” Hinata’s eyes widened in shock; she had believed him to be dead, but this revelation painted a picture of even deeper suffering. “He’s supposed to be twenty-three today,” Sasuke added, a glimmer of hope mingling with the sorrow in his eyes, his voice trembling with the weight of their reality.

Feeling the weight of his pain, Hinata pulled Sasuke into a tight embrace, her heart heavy with empathy. “I’m so sorry, Sasuke,” she murmured softly, her words a feeble attempt to offer comfort in the face of such anguish.

As Sasuke continued to speak, his voice carried the burden of years of uncertainty and longing. “I just hope he’s alive and that he’ll come back someday,” he confessed, laying bare the depth of his emotions. “Every day feels like a nightmare, but no one wants to search for him anymore,” he revealed bitterly. “He was only twenty when he left, and he didn’t have the best relationship with our parents. But he was my brother, Hinata, and I can’t shake the feeling that there’s more to his disappearance than we know.”

Hinata absorbed his words, her heart aching for Sasuke and the pain he carried. After a moment of reflection, she asked gently. “Do you believe he could have left willingly?”

Sasuke’s response was laden with resignation, his uncertainty evident in his expression. “I wouldn’t blame him if he did,” he admitted quietly, his words tinged with a sense of loss and acceptance.

“Tell me about him?” Hinata’s gentle invitation hangs in the air, a subtle recognition of Sasuke’s need to share.

For a moment, Sasuke hesitates, unsure if he can articulate the complexity of his feelings about his brother. But he pushes aside his doubts, realizing that Hinata’s patient presence offers him a rare opportunity to open up.

With a quiet resolve, he begins to speak, allowing his thoughts and memories to flow freely. He trusts in Hinata’s understanding, knowing that her compassionate nature will provide him with the support he needs to navigate the tangled emotions surrounding his brother.

“You’re unusually quiet,” Sasuke remarked, his voice carrying a hint of distraction. His thumb had been tracing absent-minded circles on the side of her hip for the past ten minutes as they sat together, both engrossed in their respective schoolwork. Normally, Hinata would fill the silence with gentle conversation, but today seemed different.

Hinata’s reaction was slow, her lips pursing in contemplation before she summoned a good-humored smile to mask her inner conflict. “I could say the same about you,” she retorted playfully. “Should we turn on some music?” she suggested, already reaching for Sasuke’s phone before he could respond, knowing his preference for white noise while studying.

As Sasuke’s grip tightened on her hip bone, Hinata glanced back at him, finding a mix of concern and understanding in his gaze.

“Are you worried about summer?” Sasuke’s question cut through the air, the weight of his words palpable despite his calm demeanor.

Suddenly, the space between their chairs felt too vast, even though Sasuke’s arms could easily envelop her. Hinata’s hands instinctively found their way to the back of Sasuke’s neck, a familiar gesture of comfort, as she leaned in to press a soft kiss on his lips, surprising him with her sudden display of affection.

Her actions spoke volumes, revealing the tumult of emotions churning within her heart as she sought solace and intimacy in Sasuke’s embrace.

As Hinata rose from her seat, her movement a graceful arc that brought her down to Sasuke’s eye level, a rush of anticipation fluttered in his chest. The air crackled with tension, charged with unspoken desire lingering just beneath the surface, and their eyes locked in a silent exchange of anticipation. Slowly, their lips met again in a tender kiss, a delicate mingling of warmth and affection. Sasuke’s heart pounded in his chest as he savored the sensation of Hinata’s soft lips against his own, their mouths fitting together perfectly like two pieces of a puzzle.

He could feel the gentle pressure of her lips as they moved against his, a silent symphony of longing and desire. Hinata’s breath danced across his skin, warm and inviting, sending shivers down his spine. Their fingers intertwined, a silent promise of unity and understanding amidst the chaos of their emotions.

As the kiss deepened, Sasuke felt a surge of warmth enveloping him, melting away the layers of tension and doubt that had been weighing him down. Hinata’s touch was like a balm to his soul, soothing his frayed nerves and igniting a fire within him that he had long thought extinguished.

And then, as if by some unspoken agreement, their tongues met in a slow, tentative dance, exploring each other with a delicate intimacy that spoke volumes. Sasuke lost himself in the sensation, his senses overwhelmed by the taste of her lips, the scent of her hair, the feel of her body pressed against his own.

With school break approaching, Hinata found herself too often ensnared in deep thought, worrying about minute changes and the infinite possibilities. This would be the first time she would return hope after the longest time she’d been away, she had tasted freedom, not a lot of it under Ko’s watchful gaze, but enough to know she’d feel the tight restraints of her family’s state with worse repercussions than ever before.

As she pulled back from the kiss, Hinata maintained a close proximity, settling at the table across from Sasuke, her gaze filled with affection and a hint of vulnerability.

“I can’t shake off, I’m so worried about going back home,” she confessed, a faint blush coloring her cheeks as she shrugged slightly. “It’s just... I’m not sure what to expect anymore. After being away for so long, I’ve gotten used to a different routine and a different set of rules,” she explained, her voice trailing off with uncertainty.

Sasuke nodded in understanding, his touch reassuring as his hand rested firmly on her thigh, offering her a sense of grounding amidst her turmoil.

“I wish there was a way for you to stay,” Sasuke admitted earnestly, his gaze unwavering as he spoke. “But at the same time, I’m confident you’ll get through it. I find it hard to believe that you’d encounter any serious issues,” he reassured her, his voice soft yet resolute.

Hinata’s brow furrowed with confusion at his words. “What do you mean?” she inquired, her curiosity piqued.

“You’re the least defiant person I’ve ever met,” Sasuke confessed, his tone reverent rather than critical. “You’re unobtrusive, quiet, and disciplined beyond reason at times,” he complimented easily, genuine admiration evident in his voice. “What could your father possibly fault you for?”

Hinata fought to contain the conflicting emotions churning within her, her lips forming a tight line in a bid to suppress the smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. Beneath the facade of composure, anger simmered, a dangerous undercurrent she dared not unleash, especially within the confines of her home where any display of emotion could invite unwanted scrutiny.

Sasuke’s welcoming presence acted as a sanctuary of understanding, a precious refuge where Hinata could finally lower her defenses. His encouragement, even of her most innocent expressions, resonated deeply with her, a stark juxtaposition to the stringent expectations she endured at home. In Sasuke, she found unwavering support and empathy, a stark contrast to the judgmental gaze she often encountered within the walls of her family’s residence.

Caught between the need to suppress her true feelings and the desire to share her struggles with Sasuke, Hinata found herself torn. Hinata’s hesitant glance towards Sasuke conveyed her inner turmoil, torn between revealing her true feelings and maintaining her composure. She was unsure whether to reveal the depths of her emotions or continue to bury them beneath a facade of stoicism.

With a sigh, Hinata turned away, finding it easier to voice her concerns without meeting Sasuke’s gaze directly.

“My father—" she began, only to be interrupted by Sasuke.

“I know,” he interjected, his understanding evident. “He sees too much of your mother in you and seems to prefer it when you fade into the background.”

Hinata hesitated, a mixture of discomfort and resignation crossing her features. “Those aren’t words I’d use,” she corrected gently.

“But it’s the truth, isn’t it?” Sasuke insisted, his voice soft yet unwavering. His outward expression of anger was far too pronounced, revealing a level of confidence that bordered on recklessness.

Hinata grimaced, too proud to refute his observation, yet feeling the weight of her own internal struggle with her family’s expectations.

A moment of silent understanding passed between them, their unspoken connection offering solace amidst Hinata’s inner conflict. With a gentle smile, Sasuke leaned forward, his lips meeting hers in a tender kiss. It was brief yet comforting, a simple gesture. Hinata closed her eyes, allowing herself to be swept away by the warmth of his touch, the softness of his lips against hers. In that evanescent moment, the worries of the world faded into the background, replaced by a sense of peace and belonging.

As Sasuke withdrew, the feeling remained despite them having only the tangible warmth of their intertwined hands as a lingering link, he voiced his innermost thoughts with a vulnerability that belied his usual stoicism.

“I wish you’d rage againt their orders, assert yourself, and adamantly refuse to go,” he confessed, his posture exuding a pride tinged with a hint of regret. “But that’s not who you are. It’s who I am, I know the difference and I cherish how they mean we can complement each other,” he continued, his words a testament to his unwavering affection.

Hinata nodded in silent agreement, her hand tenderly covering his in a wordless gesture of solidarity.

“But it pains me to see you shrink and diminish yourself for their sake,” Sasuke continued, his voice tinged with anguish. “Meaning I’ll anxiously wait for your return, hoping that you’ll remain unchanged, and after we can rediscover our happiness together, then bury this chapter of our lives in the past. If only you’ll allow me to support you through it,” he vowed, his resolve unyielding and resolute.

“Sasuke,” Hinata murmured, her voice soft with a mixture of sadness and hope.

“We’ll be alright,” Sasuke reassured, his tone steady yet filled with tenderness. “I’ll be here for you every step of the way.”

“I’ll call a million times,” Hinata threatened, but it sounded too much like a promise for Sasuke, a plead from her.

“I sure hope so,” Sasuke encouraged, a gentle chuckle escaping his lips. He will miss her terribly. “I’ll be waiting by the phone for you.”

“I’ll miss your birthday too,” she lamented.

Sasuke groaned, his head dropping onto her lap, inviting her comforting touch as she ran her fingers through his dark locks. “Don’t remind me. It’s not a big deal,” he reassured, though his tone betrayed a hint of disappointment. “Hopefully, it will go unnoticed this year.”

Hinata tugged gently at his hair after his complaint. “We can’t let that happen,” she disagreed firmly, meeting his disbelieving gaze. “We can have another celebration when I get back,” she suggested, or rather, insisted, with a soft yet determined tone.

Sasuke sighed, resigned to her persuasiveness.

“Do you trust me?” he asked, searching her eyes.

Hinata hesitated briefly, knowing it was too early for deeper promises, but she couldn’t deny the truth. “Of course.”

“So you’ll be okay?”

“I’ll come back for you,” Hinata affirmed. “It might be boring and stressful, but I’ll send you a million pictures, call you every day, and try to meet with my friends,” she planned optimistically. “And when I return, I’ll tell you everything about it.”

“If anything, I’m excited for that part,” Sasuke confessed, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips.

With one last tender kiss planted atop Sasuke’s head, Hinata settled back into her chair. Though they attempted to refocus on their schoolwork, their minds were elsewhere. It wasn’t long before Hinata’s pen clattered onto the table, drawing Sasuke’s attention.

“Can we go out, Sasuke?” Hinata’s voice carried a sense of urgency. “Right now, can we go somewhere?”

“Sure,” Sasuke agreed, deftly twirling his own pen between his fingers. “Do you have a place in mind?”

Hinata paused for only a moment, her lips forming an endearing pout as she pondered. “How about the bakery and then the park?” she suggested, her tone earnest.

A smile tugged at Sasuke’s lips. “Grab your things, and let’s get out of here,” he agreed. “I’ll buy you some comfort cinnamon rolls.”
