Summary
He practices in the mirror—practices his walk, recalling the way the boys at school do it. How they hold themselves with the confidence of a god, how every step looks, how every movement feels. He envies them. He envies their eyes, envies their mouths and their noses, the way they can live without judgment for the way their clothes fit them. Most of all, he envies the way they don’t bat an eye when they hear their name, because why would they? Their name is theirs.
His hand traces a body he never wanted—the curves and the softness of his stomach and his growing chest and all he can think of as he looks back into his reflection is that he doesn’t recognize the person looking back.
