Poppy’s voice wobbled when she finally asked, “Why did you even quit anyway? You were the best Mum ever coached. You should be representing Victoria in State tournaments right now.”
Maeve sighed. “It’s not because I didn’t love it, or because I hated competing,” she said quietly.
“So then, why?” Poppy prompted.
“You know what it’s like, in between heats, everyone just waiting in the sand, watching,” Maeve said, and Poppy nodded. “I started overhearing things. People talking. The other kids… They kept teasing me. That Zara’s dad was actually my dad too.”
“Oh,” Poppy breathed, her eyes widening.
“So I asked Mum what they meant,” Maeve told her. She sprayed the counter again and wiped it clean, smiling grimly. “That’s when Mum and Dad told me about Callum, and...”
“Zara,” Poppy sighed heavily, and Maeve nodded.
