izuku has known both you and katsuki for as long as he can remember.
he was there when both of you showed your friends your newly manifested quirks. he was there to see the strain in your relationship worsen as katsuki continued to bully izuku throughout middle school, and you were there to defend him all the time.
he watched as you ignored katsuki as much as you can when high school started and you three were inevitably going to be stuck with each other for another three years. he also watched you two continue to ignore each other despite landing in the same friend group (albeit katsuki was only forced by kirishima to join their group).
izuku knew that no one in the class would be able to tell that you and katsuki were once friends. he thought you’ll be graduating never repairing your friendship.
but izuku remembers his eyes widening when he saw you with kirishima that night katsuki was captured by the league. he remembers you hugging katsuki without a thought as soon as it seemed safe enough for everyone to calm down. he remembers seeing katsuki almost reaching up to return the gesture, but harshly pushing you away when he suddenly remembers that kirishima and the others were watching them.
he watched as things changed between you two ever since rescuing him.
izuku remembers you looking just as surprised as he was when katsuki begrudgingly approached you to partner up with him for a project. he saw you two slowly warm up to each other, which basically means katsuki actually pays attention to you and is able to grunt responses.
things have been.. different.
lately he’s noticed that you two always partnered up for class, whether it be for projects or training. he noticed at one point that you two don’t even ask each other, you just walk to each other without question.
even outside class hours, izuku would almost always see you two together in the common room. sometimes you’re eating dinner together and idly chatting. sometimes you two are doing your own thing, just in each other’s presence.
he’s noticed the subtle touches you gave each other. he’s seen katsuki remove a piece of rice from your the corner of your mouth, and you just smiled at him sheepishly. he’s seen you squeeze katsuki’s arm before you head up to your bedroom, going to sleep first. he’s definitely also seen your fingers lingering when passing each other notes and such. izuku thinks he’s just overthinking that part.
izuku also caught a glimpse of you resting your head on katsuki’s shoulder. the class decided to have a movie night, with the lights off. you seemed to have fallen asleep, and katsuki doesn’t seem to mind at all. what surprised izuku most is that katsuki was resting his head on yours.
by the time the movie ends and people were starting to stand up, izuku looked at you two once more. katsuki was nudging your head with his shoulder, and you chuckle as you apologized for falling asleep.
“i don’t mind,” he heard the blonde mumble. “movie was dumb anyway.”
izuku is the most observant person there is, but he doesn’t have a clue about romantic relationships.
he thinks maybe he’s just overthinking things. maybe he’s just still getting used to you and katsuki being close once again.
he dismisses his observations,
even that one time he saw katsuki genuinely smiling softly at you as you were laughing at your friends’ antics.
