Summary
A lone car alarm screeching from out on the main street brings a bleary Husk back to consciousness. The beer bottle he’d forgotten he’s been clutching escapes off the plane of his loosened grip and rolls noisily across the cold cement, stopping only when it clinks against a nearby graffiti-ridden dumpster.
Another dismal birthday for the books.
One more year on a never-ending trek towards infinity has started off with a bang: waking up on his back, skunked out of his mind in a piss-soaked back alley.His owner will no doubt be coming to pick him up soon.

Dang, this was marvellous! So good, so good. Lovely.
I really liked the minor plot twist with the light pollution.
Funny thing. I've only ever lived in the city my whole life. You can't even squint to see the stars, there's none here. Sure, if you took a camera and zoomed in at some special nature reserve you could, but I'm not that, and I can't do that. I can't see that.
I used to be so happy as a kid when I would spot some blinking light far above, 'cause I believed it was a star. It's just satellites now. A plane, maybe. A drone.
There's no fireflies here either. Even if they were, they would have been endangered a long time ago. We've got street lamps and brown clouds and a blue moon, headlights and neon signs and a bedroom in the dark.
One day, y'know. I want to go somewhere, with my friend--someone I love, and I want to look up, and I don't want to squint, and I'm going to see a night sky full of stars. I don't know if I ever will have the money to, the power to, the ability.
But it's nice to think. Haha.
