The Avengers usually only handled the bigger threats but a group of robbers had stolen some alien technology and so the police had called them in. Tony, being Tony, had sent Nat, Steve, and Clint out after the escaping van. He didn't think it was worth his time. Steve, Nat and Clint were all riding tricked out bikes Tony made and they were hot on the van's tail. The back doors of the van were opened as a man began to shoot at the heros. All the stolen technology was in the back but luckily the man was using a regular gun. What Cap, Widow and Hawkeye didn't realize is he was using an alien shield that he stole. None of Hawkeye's arrows or Widows bullets were breaking the barrier. The van took a sharp turn, a flask falling to the van floor and breaking. The criminal paid little attention, deciding to figure it out later. The van was now in Queens and Steve decided to call in the neighborhood hero for a little help.
"Hey, Spiderman, we could use some help." Steve patched himself into Peter's comns, knowing the kid would be able to track them. Peter was one roof away from sneaking back into his bedroom when he heard Cap's voice. It was late, 11pm but Peter turned around without a moment's hesitation and got his AI to track Steve. Peter was swinging building to building as he caught up with the chase. As he approached, he saw Hawkeye's bike flip, the criminal having successfully shot the front tire. Peter swung down, picking Clint up off of his bike as it crashed into a parked car causing an explosion.
"Thanks," Clint said as Peter dropped him on the sidewalk. "Why don't you try and swing ahead of them kid!" Peter nodded as he swung back up into the air planning to take Clint's advice. Then Peter's Spidey Sense went off and his head snapped towards Cap. He wasn't thinking when he shot his web at the gunman's arm. He just didn't want Cap to get shot. But as Peter pulled the man's arm up, his Spidey Sense screamed at him, but it was too late. He'd stopped the man from shooting Steve, but angled the gun at himself in the process. Peter felt the bullet pierce his shoulder and the pain caused him to release both his webs. Peter tumbled unceremoniously unto the pavement.
"Spiderman!" Steve shouted, stopping his bike for a moment to look where the Peter fell. Nat sped past Steve and around the corner, keeping up the pursuit. Steve was about to go to Peter when Clint ran up the street, kneeling at Peter's side.
"I've got the kid, Steve. Go!" Clint yelled as he helped Peter stand up. Steve took off rounding the corner, trying to catch up to Nat. Steve turned another corner just in time to see Nat jump off her bike as it crashed. Nat tucked into a roll and then stood on the sidewalk cursing in Russian. There was no sight of the vehicle and Steve figured it had turned onto a different street moments ago, but they'd lost sight of it.
"Judging by the Russian curses I must say I'm disappointed. I can't believe you let them get away." Tony mocked over the coms. Steve rolled his eyes before he double checked that Nat was alright. Then the two of them ran back to where they left Peter. The kid usually bounced back quickly but this time he was down on the pavement, leaning against a nearby building.
"What's wrong?" Nat asked, knowing that it wasn't like Peter to just sit back and wait even while injured. Clint looked up at Steve and Nat, concerned.
"I don't know, but I think the bullet may have been poisoned." Clint guessed, but Peter just shook his head in protest. Steve looked at Peter's shoulder and was glad to see that Clint's hand keeping pressure was enough to stop the bleeding. Still, Peter seemed extremely out of it, and with one look at Nat he activated his com.
"Tony, the kid's been shot, we need a ride back to the tower." Steve said and he instantly heard Tony drop whatever he had been working on.
"What!? Is he okay?" Tony snapped, the sounds of his suit assembling around him were clear even over the coms.
"I'm fine Mr. Stark, I just feel a little off." Peter tried to calm his mentor and role model down but he wasn't feeling as well as he liked. Something was wrong. He'd been shot before and sometimes the bullets had been laced with poison but this was different. It was like time was actually slowing down, then returning to normal, all before everything seemed to freeze. Peter felt like he was watching a video with a bad internet connection. The world was almost glitching around him. It was like nothing he'd ever experienced before.
"Well, I'm on my way kid." Tony said because despite Peter's attempts to reassure him, he was worried. He flew over quickly, picked Peter up and went straight back to the tower, leaving the rest of the heroes to take a taxi back, or in Steve's case, simply sprint back. Tony flew into the Tower and went straight to the medical wing. He placed Peter down on a cot and called for Bruce as his suit disassembled and flew back to it's case on it's own. Bruce rushed into the room and looked from Peter to Tony.
"What happened?" He asked, jumping straight into action.
"He got shot and we think the bullet might have been laced with something." Tony replied, asking FRIDAY to start running some tests.
"I'm fine." Peter continued to protest but Tony knew he was lying. Peter meant to make his voice sound steady but instead it wobbled, he couldn't figure out what was going on. The room was spinning and Tony and Bruce were out of sync, their voices, their movements, it all seemed to be lagging and freezing. Peter shook his head as Tony tried to put an oxygen mask on him. Looking past Tony, Peter saw Wanda starring in his direction with worry. Vision walked over and began to help but Peter couldn't listen to their slowmo voices anymore, his head was aching. He closed his eyes, he was tired and he felt sick and soar. Deep down he knew this wasn't some poisoned bullet, he knew it could be serious and that he shouldn't close his eyes. Still, nothing made sense, the room was moving at different speeds and Peter couldn't help but close his eyes.
"He passed out." Vision informed and Tony swore. Bruce quickly removed the bullet, thinking that would be the solution but Peter didn't improve.
"What's wrong with him?" Tony almost shouted in frustration. "This can't simply be a type of poison, can it?"
"I think you're right Tony. Peter's body should have been able to fight off any poison by this point." Bruce shook his head, looking at the results from some of FRIDAY's tests. "There's something in his blood, but I don't think I've seen anything like it before." Steve and Nat ran into the room while Clint stayed at the door with Wanda.
"Okay, what's the story Tony?" Steve said, walking over to Peter. He was sweating heavily now and Steve was worried, he'd grown to like the kid. Tony was about to answer When Peter's heart rate tripled out of nowhere.
"What the-" Bruce said under his breath staring at Peter's heart monitor. "Okay we have to push-" Once more Bruce stopped as Peter's heart rate became normal again, he was thankful, but also confused.
"What just happened?" Nat asked, remaining calm on the outside but she was just as worried as the rest of the Avengers. Bruce shook his head, desperately looking through FRIDAY's tests and scans for answers and still finding nothing.
"I don't know Natasha." Bruce responded and Tony looked over at Peter. Tony was worried, this couldn't be happening, not to the kid. "We took the bullet out when he first got here, but it hasn't changed anything." Tony began to pace, and Steve looked at Clint and Wanda in the doorway. This wasn't good. Then suddenly, Peter's heart stopped with no warning, it just stopped. Wanda leaned on Clint for support as Tony's eyes grew wide with fear. Bruce ran to the corner of the room and came back pushing a crash cart. Steve had begun chest compressions while Tony simply took Peter's hand. Bruce charged the paddles, yelled 'clear,' but before he had a chance to use them Peter's heart fell back into a normal rhythm. Bruce put the paddles down on top of the cart. Steve glanced at Tony who looked relieved and scared because for once Tony didn't understand what was happening. Everyone exchanged worried looks, no one really sure what to do. Vision was still calmly standing in front of a screen displaying Peter's scans and tests.
"So what do we do?" Steve broke the silence that had settled over the room. Bruce shook his head and took off his glasses, rubbing his eyes. Tony just stared at Peter, his breathing was uneven and he looked so pale.
"I don't know what is wrong but I think it would be best if we do what we can." Vision answered, not facing the group. "Let's give him some fluids, keep him on oxygen and watch to see if he becomes stable." Tony looked at Bruce who only shrugged.
"I don't have a better idea," he admits and so Bruce hooked Peter up to an IV, and increased the amount of oxygen being administered through the mask. Once finished he turned to face the group and sat down in a chair. "Now we just have to wait."
