Summary
After Erwin's death at Shiganshina, Levi is lost. He feels listless, as though the hole torn in his Commander's side was also shot through his own. Unable to focus or complete his work within the regular scenery of the Corps barracks, especially around places that should house Erwin, Levi is sent away. Hange gives him a job in an attempt to ground him: guard the War Chief in the great forest until they understand exactly what it is he wants.
This should be an easy order for Levi to fulfill. He has never failed Erwin before, and he doesn't plan to fail him now. As soon as Hange gives the order, Levi plans to strike Zeke Yeager down where he stands. The thought of having Zeke's blood on his hands makes Levi's stomach turn, but he knows it's only nerves. Or madness. One or the other, or both.
As it turns out, though, Levi has quite a bit more in common with Zeke than he thought. And it doesn't seem like he was lying when he talked about Ackerman bonding. At least, that's one excuse that makes some modicum of sense...
