When Luz was younger, she thought that the world revolved around her, but now she'd realized she was so wrong about that. She thought she'd just spend the summer in the Boiling Isles, then go home pretending she'd been at camp the whole time, but now the portal was destroyed and her mom was mad at her for leaving: it was the tragic case of her reality.
She'd thought she was indestructible, like no one could touch her, but Belos had shown her that the power she had was pretty disposable compared to him. She hadn't planned on it, but it was about time her mom knew the truth anyway.
One of her lies: she was at camp.
One of her lies: Amity was her best friend. (Luz hadn't wanted to lie about the girl that got her so high on love, but...)
One of her lies: she wasn't afraid of her mom knowing she had a girlfriend.
Amity had come back with Luz to the Owl House after the Bonesborough Brawl, with her dad covering for her by making up an excuse to tell Odalia. Though she was accidentally(?) stroking Luz's body in ways that normally would probably lead to them doing something out of Luz's E-rated Hecazura fanfics, Luz had much more on her mind today.
Her life felt so small today compared to her dad's death. She remembered realizing he was gone forever, and wondering if forever had its own life.
She didn't want the priest to give her any answers; he'd assured her many times before that her dad was going to survive, and when he didn't, she realized that the priest only knew as much as her, which was nothing. She'd asked him if he'd been to heaven or hell before, and when he said he hadn't, she said, "I didn't think so."
It was the first time Luz realized people weren't indestructible no matter how strong they looked. She sat up to go on a walk, and Amity understood she didn't want to be touched right now. She loved Luz, but understood that she, like everything else in Luz's life, felt disposable to Luz at the moment. At least now she knew the truth.
Being ok was just one of Luz's lies. Amity could tell that Luz still hadn't revealed another one of her lies, even to the girl that got her feeling so high, even though she already knew one of Luz's lies was about what she'd told her mom during her trip into the in-between realm.
Walking down the beach, Luz remembered how she used to pray at night for her dad to recover, every night before she laid herself down to sleep. Her mom had said it was the right thing to do, and her grandma said it too.
Luz collapsed on the sand, whispering a pained "why?" before being carried back to her room.
