The Girl from Isla Sorna

Summary:

AU - The Henson family's illegal expedition to Isla Sorna ends fatally for the small Family. Miraculously, however, the couple's young Daughter Evelyn Henson survives the Raptor Attack. The Girl is discovered two years later by Owen Grady, who had actually only come to the Island to observe the behavior of the wild raptors , so that he could learn more about his Raptor Squad.

Notes:

Hello everybody. The idea for this AU oneshot came to me when I was re-reading the comments on Adopted and the question arose as to what would have happened , if Evelyn hadn't been taken in by the raptors as a baby, but had been a little older. And this is what came out of it. I hope you all enjoy reading, stay healthy and of course I'm very happy to read your feedback :-)

Work Text:

Isla Sorna - August 15, 2009

Lily and Jonathan Hensen were happy and had absolutely no concerns about this illegal trip. They were incredibly big fans of the closed island of Isla Sorna near Costa Rica, which is not accessible to tourists.

And they also followed the drama surrounding the Jurassic Park theme park in the media at the time. Something went wrong during a test run and the park would never be reopened to the public. It was a failed project and would never have a real future.

This announcement was heard in all the press media at the time and the Hensen couple had worked long and hard, saved and through the inheritance from Lily's deceased parents, the now young parents were finally able to fulfill a long-cherished dream.

They bought a private plane with a pilot, loaded their luggage onto the private plane for this unauthorized excursion, including the lack of permission to land on Isla Sorna, and took a seat in the plane in question together with their now 5-year-old daughter Evelyn.

The Hensen family wanted a family trip, a special kind of experience and it had cost a lot of money to persuade the pilot to go on this trip. But it would all be worth it and an unforgettable experience - because now that the Hensens were rich, the world was at their feet and everything had its price.

They would see with their own eyes the dinosaurs that were supposed to be on this island - at least that's what sources Jonathon and Lily had spoken to said.

It would be spectacular - unique and something they wouldn't soon forget. It would bring their reputation to the media once again and show that the Hensens were something better and special - after all, who had ever been to an island full of dinosaurs in a private jet?

"There's the island right daddy?" - Evelyn Hensen, the couple's young daughter, sat at one of the window seats and looked out curiously. From up here everything looked so tiny and small and the girl had already seen the other islands they flew over.

She wondered if this was the island her parents had always talked about? Was this the place where she would see dinosaurs?

"That's right, Evelyn. And we'll end up there soon. Maybe we'll see a few of the wild dinosaurs straight away," was her father's answer and her mother dug a camera out of her backpack and quickly checked whether the film was still in there.

"Are they lovely and nice dinosaurs? Like in my storybook?",  Evelyn continued to ask curiously and didn't flinch as the pilot of the private jet slowly started to land.

The girl of course alluded to the stories of the dinosaur friends from 'The Land Before Time'. However, the 5-year-old didn't get an answer to this childish question because her parents were too busy talking about it - what a great adventure and a status symbol it was for her life.

That this trip would change the Hensens' lives and make them better known. None of this interested the blonde-haired girl with the curious green eyes - maybe she could see long necks or a sharp tooth - of course little Hensen knew that the dinosaurs didn't really have names like that - but it somehow suited them, didn't it? At least that's how the dinosaurs in their book addressed the other sometimes more dangerous dinosaurs.

"Are you sure you want to go out there? I haven't heard anything good about Isla Sorna and the critters could still be running around here. Velociraptors are said to be very deadly and cunning beasts" - the pilot of the private jet - who only goes by the name Norbert heard expressed his opinion - but of course dear Norbert would have nothing against Lily and Jonathan's already set thoughts and determination to leave the plane and walk along the small path that led from the landing site to the beginning of the extensive jungle.

So Norbert just pulled out his small pistol and followed the couple skeptically. It's not for nothing that the locals in Costa Rica called the archipelago 'The Five Islands of Death'.

Evelyn unbuckled her seat belt, grabbed her backpack and curiously left the plane to follow her parents and the pilot Norbert to the beginning of the jungle. As soon as she went down the last step, the 5-year-old immediately felt the extreme temperature difference that existed here.

It was so much warmer than in England.

And she heard lots of different birds chirping, but didn't see any dinosaurs at the moment.

"Come on Evelyn - Momy and Daddy don't want you to get lost" - when her parents called for her - which wasn't the best idea on an island full of dinosaurs - the little girl nodded and playfully ran to her parents and the pilot, who were slowly walked along the small path.

The small group did not notice how the velociraptors had noticed the arrival of the humans and did not want the intruders in their territory.

The parents or the pilot noticed how Evelyn was distracted by a little monkey that showed great interest in her backpack.

The adrenaline and status-focused parents and the worried pilot Norbert were too busy looking for a dinosaur and taking photos with the camera.

So no one noticed like Evelyn the little monkey who had fished a chocolate bar out of the inside pocket of her backpack - and thus distanced herself from her parents.

"Stop, come back, monkey. You definitely don't like chocolate bars. That gives you a stomach ache, doesn't it?" - but Evelyn's attempts to convince the little monkey, who had quickly climbed up one of the tall and thick trees in the jungle with the prey he had found, that it was not good for the animal to eat the chocolate bar failed.

And after just a few minutes the little girl realized that she had lost her parents.

How could that happen? You had been with the pilot Norbert at your side a few minutes ago, right?

"Momy? Daddy? Norbert? Where are you? You haven't seen the cute little monkey", the little blonde said quietly and went back in the direction from which it came.

Maybe she would find the three adults again soon.

It was only when Evelyn heard shots and the panicked screams of the adults that she became afraid, as a deep roar was heard in the distance.

The fear paralyzed them for a moment and tears welled up in their eyes as they attributed the screams to their parents.

It sounded like they were in a lot of pain - but then there was another strange sound - it sounded like the hissing of several animals.

The panic and fear caused Evelyn to finally break free of her paralyzed state and run in the opposite direction in panic, tears streaming down her face.

The child didn't know how long or how far she had been walking, but suddenly there was such a large and long tree root and she stumbled, felt a short stabbing pain and landed on the ground.

Silent tears ran down the little blonde's cheeks and she wanted to call for help - but the adults stopped screaming in pain. What if no one heard them?

A quiet chattering made the girl lying on the floor jump. She hardly dared look up and began to tremble. It didn't sound like a bird or any other animal that she could identify - just seconds later, Evelyn Hensen could hear many footsteps joining the chattering animal and these animals began to communicate with each other in a strange way.

There it was again, the quiet chattering seemed to be very close in front of her and when something nudged her hand, Evelyn jumped again and finally looked up cautiously.

And the girl was looking straight into the face of a very young baby raptor. The amber-colored eyes looked at her playfully and now the young animal let out a happy chatter, almost as if it wanted to play with Evelyn. There was actually a real dinosaur in front of her.

"P...please don't hurt me...I'm a good girl......", Evelyn whispered fearfully and was hissed at by the alpha animal of the group as soon as the words left her mouth.

The cub that Evelyn had looked at curiously a few seconds ago , jumped to the side and the rest of the raptors also backed away - so that the alpha of the pack could take a closer look at this person.

Evelyn made herself small out of fear and actually wanted to close her eyes - but she was fascinated by the alpha animal.

It was a very large and dangerous-looking male, with single blue feathers on his head, gray-blue stripes on the side of his neck, amber-colored dangerously flashing eyes and a grey-dark scaled body. This animal radiated so much energy and Evelyn lowered her gaze instead of closing her eyes.

She could feel the alpha animal sniffing her, nudging her several times and touching her backpack with one of his sickle claws. Another slightly aggressive hiss went in Evelyn's direction and she simply did what she had seen the baby raptor do.

Without making eye contact with the leader of the group, she went from her curled up position to a crouching position and crawled back a few meters. Maybe she could show the angry animal that she was kind and wouldn't hurt them?

And whatever Evelyn had done, it was nothing short of a miracle, because the alpha animal of the group gave a quieter, different hiss and then scraped the jungle floor with its right claws and then took off with the other raptors -  Evelyn received a clear signal to follow the group from the baby raptor and its mother, who stood a few steps away from Evelyn even after the remaining members of the pack had disappeared.

"I...I can come with you?", Evelyn breathed, almost wordlessly, and when the baby raptor walked up to her and rubbed his head on her shoulder, the cub's mother gave an encouraging chatter - she should and would follow the raptors Maybe even find a new family with them.

The five-year-old wiped away her tears with the back of her hand, picked herself up and followed the raptors into the depths of the jungle of Isla Sorna, somewhat unsure of what would happen next.

And so, after a test by the alpha animal of the raptor group, which was supposed to leave a scar on her ankle, Evelyn became part of the pack.

She used human communication less and less and learned to copy the language and sounds as well as the behavior of raptors and understand them.

The little five-year-old girl learned how to hunt in a pack and how to climb tall trees to annoy the annoying little monkeys.

She learned everything a raptor needed to survive in the wild and how to pay attention to nature's own timing.

And so the next two years would pass - after this traumatic experience she had found a new family and lived as a permanent member of the pack of velociraptors on Isla Sorna.

Isla Sorna - September 15, 2011

Owen Grady's blue-green eyes watched the surroundings closely while he was supported by Barry.

It wasn't his plan to voluntarily go to the island where the secret facility B of what was then Jurassic Park was located. But perhaps he could understand the Raptor Squad consisting of Blue, Charlie, Echo and Delta a little better and build a relationship with them if he observed the wild raptors from a distance. It was an absolutely daring and dangerous idea.

But Owen and Barry weren't alone - a helicopter carrying Jurassic World security guards was waiting for them. It was a suicide mission but Owen wanted to give his animals the best training possible and if that meant looking at a pack of wild raptors on Isla Sorna - then that's exactly what he former soldier would do.

"I don't like this - what if they notice us, Owen?" Barry whispered to him as the two men walked towards a clearing and took cover behind a bush.

"If you would stop whispering, they wouldn't discover us Barry," Owen simply countered and they would have to wait and see what they would see. Owen placed his bag of supplies next to him and it didn't take long until a few of the wild raptors appeared, they seemed to be interacting and the two men were so focused on observing the animals in the wild and the qualities of the leader of the group.

The raptors listened to the alpha animal's commands and it almost seemed as if the animals didn't notice the humans - had there not been gunfire in the distance.

This put the raptors into a state of alarm and some females made alarm sounds. The alpha animal tilted his head and made hissing noises - whereupon the raptors moved away from Owen and Barry and wanted to investigate the sounds.

"Let's go, Owen - we saw what we needed to see", Barry said silently and the raptor trainer nodded, turned around and went to reach for his bag that had made sandwiches and a small bottle of water - but that bag wasn't there more.

Owen didn't have much time to wonder, as Barry quickly urged him to go back to the landing pad near the old lab. The helicopter and the security men , Masrani had given them wouldn't wait forever. So the two men gathered their strength to return and left the clearing behind them.

Along the way, the team made radio contact with the two men and told them to hurry up.

They had been able to divert the raptors away by using three released pigs - but the two men had to hurry so as not to further delay the helicopter's takeoff and the return trip to Isla Nublar.

Shortly before the old laboratory, Owen could see a trace of the sandwiches being made.

They appeared to have been ripped out of the packaging, tried once, and then thrown on the floor.

The trail of pieces of bread and lettuce led to one of the entrances to the old lab and Owen ignored Barry's advice, just grabbed a gun from his best friend and followed the trail.

No animal would simply drop food on the floor after trying it. Maybe that would lead him to the thief of his pocket?

The bare feet of 7th year old Evelyn Hensen quickly ran down the old stairs into the basement of the laboratory.

For some time now there has been a male raptor who has been causing her nothing but trouble.

For some strange reason he didn't like the girl, he kept challenging the older and slightly higher up in the pack to power struggles and annoyed her sister.

It wasn't fair and Evelyn fought back every time.

If she didn't do it, not only would the Alpha be angry, but she would also lose her place in the rankings. And the 7th year old had fought so hard to keep this place for the last two years.

She wouldn't let a stupid cub that was a bit bigger than the blonde herself take him away from her. Because she and her sister, who was now fully grown and much taller than Evelyn, had a plan.

Because these people, whom Evelyn still knew vaguely and seemed to remember something about the foreign communication, had suddenly appeared in her home and if she stole the male's backpack - then perhaps the male cub could leave her alone? And it would show him that Evie was much more amazing and better than her.

So her sister and she had waited for the right moment. People were so busy watching their families that it was easy to steal the backpack - only the food inside tasted disgusting. Evelyn had tried some of the strange triangles and thrown them on the floor. Then she and her sister had run to the old lab. And the male cub had followed them.

Evelyn didn't know exactly which entrance the male had come through, but she and her sister had separated.

This way they could outwit the young animal when they were ambushed. He urgently needed to be shown who was now higher in the ranking. Her raptor mom had taught her that she had to defend her place and what belonged to her against everyone who was below her in the ranking.

And her raptor mom had taught her so much over the last few years and Evie could rely on her sister. But she also knew that the male cub that was after her was bigger and stronger than her. Surely there had to be a way to give him a clear indication?

The young raptor that Evelyn considered her sister roamed the other part of the lab, waiting for the cub to arrive. Of course the raptor knew that her sister was different - she had no claws, no sharp sickle claws and no sharp teeth - but they are sisters and you protect each other.

The raptor could detect the scent of the male cub...but there was something else - the heartbeat and scent of a human male. What if this was a danger to Evelyn? The raptor ran indecisively in the direction of the human - hoping she had made the right decision.

While Evelyn walked across the ground, which was partly overgrown with plants, she tried to use her hearing to spot the young animal. He could be anywhere and just as she was about to continue running, an aggressive hiss sounded above her.

The child stopped, tilted her head, and held her hands as if they were the claws of a raptor. He stood up there and his entire posture was aggressive. He hated them to death and wanted to do something to rise up the ranks within the pack.

And the raptor took off, jumped off the rise and Evelyn took a few steps back - hissed threateningly and pawed the ground with her feet. Unbeknownst to him, Owen was hiding behind one of the lab's broken equipment, watching this extraordinary scene.

Evelyn threw the stolen backpack a little in front of her. The raptor sniffed it and pushed the useless piece, which had no meaning to him, behind him with his foot. Anger was reflected in his Eyes.

Also because she was above him in the hierarchy. And the raptor made an attack on the 7th year old and Evelyn wanted to try the same thing.

When the cub tried to push her aside with his head, Evelyn slipped under him and bit the raptor's back right leg with her teeth - as best the child could manage.

An angry noise escaped the male and he kicked the corresponding leg once, shaking Evelyn off and trying to grab her. She was able to twist away at the last moment and got up again.

Her small teeth had no chance against the hard reptile layer - but the fact that he made a sound in pain - seemed to be a good sign. Unfortunately, this didn't stop his unbridled anger towards the girl. The cub spun around quickly and tried to grab the girl.

Evelyn ran on all fours , because she could do it better and faster that way in the direction , where Owen was hiding and she made the exact sound , that Blue always used to call her sisters to her.

And somewhere in the lab, an answer came back in the form of the same sound.

Evelyn couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching her - someone other than the cub and her childlike curiosity, which was still a little bit present since her raptor mother's upbringing, made her look for a moment in the direction of the old broken device where Owen hid himself.

She looked from the device over to an old concrete wall and when she heard the cub roaring and trying to pounce on her, Evie ran towards the wall, jumped onto it and gave herself a little momentum with her feet on the wall,  in order to be able to do so with full force crashing into the somewhat surprised young animal.

Both human child and raptor hatchling let out a hissing sound - as their bodies collided with each other, both hitting the ground several meters away from the other.

The male raptor cub was quicker to get up than Evelyn and bit her on the right arm.

An animalistic scream escaped the girl and before the raptor could bite again, it was angrily pushed aside by Evelyn's sister and a fight between adult raptor and a juvenile began - this fight moved from the old laboratory out into the jungle within seconds that the young animal then fled.

Evelyn felt a sharp pain in her arm and felt something warm running down her arm.

The raptor didn't bite for long, but it was enough to seriously injure her.

She was grateful to her sister for coming to her rescue, but the pain was so incredibly painful that the 7-year-old could no longer hold back her tears.

However, when she heard footsteps and saw a person seconds later - she gave a threatening hiss and crawled back a few meters.

He just shouldn't come close to her.

She would still defend herself, but her arm would hardly allow another fight.

"Hey - take it easy, little one. I won't hurt you, okay?" - as Owen secured his pistol, Evelyn growled at him and crawled backwards a few centimeters before contorting her face in pain.

She had already observed people here last year with something like this - they had tried to catch the Spinosaurus, but it was far too smart and too fast.

"The raptor hurt you pretty badly. Does it hurt you? Can you understand me, little one? That looks like a very painful wound - the one on your arm", he continued and Evelyn just tilted her head.

She understood individual scraps of words, at least that's what the little blonde thought. But what was the person trying to make clear to her? Her raptor mom and the alpha animal said that other people, strangers, are evil and dangerous.

"Here, look. My raptors also tried to bite me not long ago - you see the scar here?" - when the human rolled up part of his jacket, Evelyn bared her teeth and the pain was so strong that she wanted to cry loudly - but something in her head stopped the child.

Only when Evelyn recognized a scar on his upper arm,  that looked like an older, now healed and not so deep bite scar from the Alpha on her ankle did Evelyn pause.

Could it be that this person wasn't evil? That he knew how she felt?

"That hurt a lot too, you know? Raptor teeth are very sharp and the scar was a few months ago. Are you sure everything is okay? You look like you're in a lot of pain, little one," Owen said once more.

The quiet tone continued and there was something about that tone of voice,  in the girl that seemed to be part of the raptor pack on Isla Sorna. It was something human and childlike.

Evelyn was reminded of her parents' words, even though the language sounded so slurred and muffled to her, she remembered that her parents always comforted her when she hurt herself and whimpered when a stronger wave of pain hit her Evelyn stood up and helplessly stretched out her little arms in the direction of the stranger.

"Evelyn Ouchie..a lot of ouchie...", the child sobbed between the animalistic noises she made.

Owen hesitated for a moment and approached the girl, carefully picking her up and slowly carrying the child out of the old laboratory.

It needed urgent medical attention and Barry looked at Owen like he had just seen a ghost.

"I explained everything to you later. She needs medical attention and help. I think she lived with the raptors for a while. An adult raptor protected her significantly from a young animal and she communicated with the animals in their language. We need to get her to the infirmary to Isla Nublar - then we'll see what happens next Barry" , Owen explained quickly and Barry only gave a responsible nod as he informed the headquarters in the Jurassic World theme park via the walkie talkie and then informed the security team waiting at the helicopter about this informed.

"An emergency medical team will be ready as soon as the helicopter lands on Isla Nublar. They believe the child is Evelyn Hensen. You remember the tragedy two years ago , where only the bones were found?", spoke Barry a few minutes later as they walked towards the helicopter landing pad.

Owen just nodded, his gaze fixed on the little girl.

She went from animalistic wails to painful crying and finally she did something that could endanger everyone present. She made calling noises - she was calling the rest of the pack and it would only be a matter of time before the raptors got here.

"Take it easy, Evie, okay? I won't let anything happen to you. You're safe with me. I'm Owen. We'll fly you to Isla Nublar and they'll take care of the bite wound on your arm - hey, stay with me, little one - Okay? Look at me. Good girl - you don't have to be afraid, Evie", Owen murmured in a calm tone that ultimately made the 7-year-old stop tossing and turning in his strong arms somehow bearable.

Owen and Barry carefully got into the helicopter, followed by the security guards and just at the right moment, because the pack of raptors ran onto the square , when the helicopter was a few meters in the air and got to safety.

During the flight to Isla Nublar, Evelyn lost consciousness and Owen vowed not to leave the child's side after landing - he felt responsible for her in some way.

And when the girl unconsciously clutched her little hand on the hem of his jacket while she passed out, Owen was afraid they wouldn't make it in time.

But the helicopter landed just in time, and Owen insisted on staying by her side as Evelyn was placed on a stretcher and taken to Jurassic World's infirmary.

Barry would be taking over feeding the raptors today and he would be keeping an eye on the girl.

Thanks to a good doctor and quick treatment, Evelyn made it.

The wound was stopped bleeding, cleaned and then given a bandage and a sedative.

In the recovery room, Owen stayed by her side and he would keep his promise.

He wouldn't let anything happen to this little girl.

He would sit right here, next to the bed, and wait for her to recover and wake up.

What would develop from this and whether she would give him the brief trust , she had shown him again, or whether it arose from the wave of pain in a leap of faith - only the near future could answer that.
