Chapter Text

“I need backup at my location.” Lucy yells into the phone she took from one of the drug dealers men. She has been undercover and was met with gunshots by La Fiera’s men. The woman looks into Lucy’s eyes and she knows. She knows Lucy’s a cop because she’s seen her before.

Lucy is able to take most down, but she is hit. The pain explodes through her shoulder just as Tim and Angela burst in. Lucy was able to take at least twelve men down. Angela had the satisfaction of arresting La Fiera.

Tim runs to Lucy. “I thought you needed backup.” Lucy is pushing herself up, even with a hole in her shoulder.

“I did, but then I managed to get them down. You certainly know how to make an entrance.” Lucy chuckles and then grimaces in pain.

“Hey, take it easy. You were shot.” Tim tells her as he helps her to the paramedics. As soon as Lucy sits, she passes out. Tim is worried, but he tries not to show it.

“She’s okay. The adrenaline wore off. We need to get her to the hospital.” Tim wants to run after her, but he can’t. Grey shows up with Nyla and they’re both impressed.

“Damn, she certainly took them down.” Nyla says and Tim scowls. “She’s going to be okay.” Tim runs his hands over his face not believing her at the moment. He is trying not to blame anyone, but it’s Lucy.

“Go pack up her hotel room, change out, and then go to the hospital. You’re her emergency contact Tim.” Grey tells him. Tim is confused.

“I am?” Tim asks curiously.

“Yes Lucy changed it before she went under.” Tim had no idea. He hurries to the hotel to pack her belongings. Once he gets inside he finds her bag that will hold the small amounts of belongings. He starts sifting through the closet and places everything in the bag. He goes through the dresser and packs that up too. As he grabs the last of her clothes, he sees something sticking out. It’s almost like something is hidden. Tim pulls it out. It’s a piece of paper with his name written on the outside. He’s confused. He grabs everything and heads back to the station.

Once there Tim heads to the locker room and changes out quickly. He decides to head home and grab extra clothes, for both him and Lucy. As Tim pulls into the hospital parking lot, he remembers the letter he found. It’s burning a hole in his pocket and he decides to read it. It says “please read if something happens to me.” Tim exhales slowly and opens it, not sure if he’s ready to read what’s inside.

Tim-

I won’t tell anyone else, but I’m absolutely terrified of this op. I know I’m good at undercover work, but I am not sure I am cut out to do this all the time. I’m not handling the next part well. It’s hard to leave everyone, but leaving you, not having contact with you, is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I miss you, so much.

I have a reason for this letter and I know you know this by now. Tim, you have changed my life in the best ways. When we met, it was hard. You were an asshole and I saw the world only as good. Having you as a TO, I see you were setting me up to be the best cop I could be. As time went on, you softened. You smiled more and please forgive me, but my feelings started changing.

They deepened further with every small thing that happened between us. Plain clothes day, helping me check all my boxes, the quarantine house, making you the audio tape, saving your career, saving my damn life (you literally brought me back to life), staying to finish training me, and helping me get through my rookie year. I can’t write every little thing out (or we would be here all day), but Tim, you have become my rock.

Once I finished training, the best times were the nights with you. You took me out because you found out about what my parents did. You bring me dinner, invite me for time with Kojo, and watch my trashy shows on the bad days. No one has ever done what you’ve done for me.

My last day was a lie. I was scared though. If I told you the truth and ruined our friendship, I’d be devastated. I can’t lose you from my life. This past year and a half, I can truly say I have fallen in love with you. I have never been in love before. I knew you were different. You are such a wonderful man.

I am so proud of you, Tim. You’ve overcome so much. Thank you for always making me feel safe, especially after Caleb. I told you my car was my safe place, but it was you, it IS you. I can’t imagine my life without you. I’ve been scared, but I’m done hiding behind the clouds.

I’m praying I am still alive if you ever read this. I know I’m not your type, hell my feelings are probably one sided. I can’t hide anymore. I’ll transfer if I need to. I’m done keeping my feelings inside. It hasn’t worked for me in life so far.

Here it is Tim: I am so in love with you Timothy Bradford. You’ve made me a better person, a better cop. I would not be here without you. I can’t lose you from my life. You’re absolutely incredible and deserve every single good thing, whatever it may be. I’m so glad I met you and you’re in my life. You were the missing piece of my heart. After everything I’ve been through, it brought me to you. The one I want by my side every single day.

I love you Tim. I’ll see you soon.

Love,

Lucy

Tim finishes reading and wipes the tears from his eyes. His heart is racing and he needs to get to Lucy. He deposits the letter into his bag and rushes into the hospital with the bag on his shoulder. Tim sits down and waits. The doctor comes out looking for him just an hour later.

“Tim Bradford?” Tim walks over. “Lucy is fine. She will make a full recovery. We repaired the damage. You can come sit with her. I’m assuming you’re staying.”

“Yes ma’am.” Tim says and he follows her. Lucy’s in bed, her arm is in a sling. As soon as he walks inside, Lucy’s eyes open and she smiles tiredly at him.

“Hey.” Her voice is still raspy. Tim pours some water and puts a straw in the cup.

“Hey.” Tim holds the cup to her mouth to drink. “I’m so glad you’re okay.” Lucy smiles.

“Nothing keeps me down. I knew you’d get to me in time.” Tim laughs.

“You didn’t need us. You basically took them all down.” Lucy frowns slightly. “Hey, you’re alive. She’s going to prison.”

“The wedding.” Lucy whispers as she realizes that she’ll miss it.

“Don’t worry. Angela knows. We’ll see how you feel, okay?” Lucy nods. It’s two days until the wedding. “Here I brought you some of my clothes. I figured you didn’t want to wear anything from your time undercover.” Lucy shakes her head. “Also, I found this.” Tim places the letter on the tray and Lucy’s eyes go wide.

“Tim, I, uh.” She stutters.

“Did you mean what you said?” Tim looks into her eyes. “I need to know it wasn’t because you thought you might die.”

“I meant every word.” Lucy tells him as he sits on the bed. “You’re amazing. You’re the most important person in my life.” Tim looks at her and puts his hand on the back of her head. The kiss is soft, gentle, yet electrifying.

“Thank god.” Tim smiles as their foreheads touch. She smiles as tears start to pool in her eyes. “Hey, don’t cry. By the way, you’re most definitely my type.” Lucy smiles at that.

“I just can’t believe you feel the same. I never thought you’d read it or feel this way.” She says honestly.

“I’m really glad I did. I’ve felt the same for a while, but I was scared. I’m done being scared. You’re incredible Lucy Chen.” He kisses her once more as he hears voices clearing. They both see Grey, Angela, and the Chief.

“Oh we knew this was coming.” Grey says. They all laugh as Tim goes red.

“Officer Chen.” The Chief says. “You did something today that our most experienced officers couldn’t do. We are offering you a golden ticket.”

“What? Really?” Lucy’s mouth drops. She is shocked.

“Yes. Thank you for everything you’ve done. Get well soon and let him take care of you.” They thank her as she takes her leave.

“Wow.” Lucy says as Tim grabs her hand.

“I want to take the detective’s exam, but not to go undercover. I’m done with that.” No one is surprised. Grey and Angela leave. Tim stays by Lucy’s side and brings her home the next day. He will help her recover.

Tim helps her get ready for Angela’s wedding and no one is surprised by the new couple. “This is perfect.” Lucy says as they away to the music. “Life couldn't get any better.” She slowly kisses him.

“Lucy, I win in life because I have you. You’re all I need.” It’s a perfect night. Both were right, life couldn’t be better. It got better as they made Sergeant and Detective. A year later, Tim proposed with a beautiful letter. Of course Lucy said yes. There was never any doubt.
