Work Text:
Bakugou knew this birthday was going to be different. He had known for a while now. He had gotten so used to spending his birthdays with Kirishima that even knowing that his boyfriend wouldn’t be home ahead of time didn’t make it ache any less. Kirishima had a mission abroad and he reminded himself of the fact the moment he opened his eyes.
He was so used to waking up on his birthday as he was showered with kisses. How Kirishima was able to sing Happy Birthday while he did so was a mystery to him. They would stay in bed for a while, either cuddling or… something more before getting ready. They always had lunch with their friends, and it was nothing but chaos and apologies to the manager of whatever restaurant they had almost destroyed. Then it was a date for just the two of them until they got home and spent a quiet night in.
Not this year though.
Kirishima was away, and all Bakugou got was a text from him apologizing and wishing him a happy day. Bakugou wanted to reply, asking how the hell he was supposed to have a good day if Kirishima wasn’t with him. Instead, he sent back a thank you.
He got out of bed, it felt like any other day. He had asked everyone to wait till Kirishima was back for them to have brunch, so his day was completely clear. He didn’t feel like doing much, so after a quick breakfast, he sat on the couch with one of the romance books he had been meaning to read.
It relaxed him, and it made him forget, if only for a moment, how empty the house felt without Kirishima. He made himself a cup of tea, answering birthday messages as he waited for the water to boil. Then, he went back to his book.
It was a fantasy novel, about a King and a dragon shifter falling in love. He couldn’t help but see Kirishima in the dragon shifter, and it made him unable to put the book down. He wasn’t sure when, but he drifted into sleep. Dreaming of himself as the king and Kirishima the dragon shifter, who knew he didn’t need saving but was there in case he was needed.
It almost made it feel like Kirishima was there.
“Katsuki.”
Kirishima’s voice sounded so close, and he wanted nothing more than to stay asleep to hear it again.
“Sweetheart, wake up.”
That was the one thing he didn’t want to do, as he felt arms wrap around him.
“Baby, I’m home.”
That was enough for Bakugou’s eyes to snap open. He was greeted by his favorite smile. “You’re home,” Bakugou gasped and wasted no time leaning forward for a kiss.
“Had to. Couldn’t let you spend your birthday all alone,” Kirishima shrugged. “I pulled some favors, so I need to head back tomorrow, sorry.”
“That’s fine,” Bakugou told him as he held Kirishima close.
“I brought you a present,” Kirishima said after a couple of minutes of just holding each other close.
“Don’t fucking need it,” Bakugou grumbled as he buried his head more into the side of Kirishima’s neck.
Kirishima didn’t argue, but one of his hands started moving, searching one of his pockets. “You sure about that?” he asked, his tone teasing.
Bakugou turned to look at what Kirishima was holding, only to see a ring. He wasn’t sure he ever woke up now. “W- Eijirou, is that…”
“I hate being apart from you… and I know we always said someday… So why not someday sooner?” Kirishima laughed nervously. “Katsuki, will you marry me?”
Bakugou nodded his head, wiping fresh tears from his eyes. “Yes. Of course, I will.”
Kirishima put the ring on his finger, kissing it into place, then kissing him. They hadn’t moved from their position on the couch and once the ring was in place, Kirishima wrapped his arms around Bakugou and held him close.
“How long have you been planning this?” Bakugou asked.
“To marry you? Since the moment I saw you. To propose? From the moment we started dating. I couldn’t let another minute go by without being engaged to you,” Kirishima said it all as if it was the most common sense thing ever to him.
Bakugou kissed Kirishima softly. “I love you. Thanks for coming back for my birthday.”
“I love you, too. Anything for my future husband.”
