Chapter Text
In the eyes of most, the path of a doctor is an honorable one. A profession to be revered, a road paved by centuries of advancement, a stairway into a world of white hallways and sacrificed time, the dark circles under one’s eyes a permanent reminder of their duty to their patients.
And there it is, the headline of an online article, dated March 21st of 2032; “World’s Youngest Doctor Receives HPPA Admission Letter.” It’s sure to draw the attention of everyone who sees it.
That’s her. Nakamura Akako. When she graduated, she was the youngest person in the world to become a doctor, only falling one or two years short of the previous record holder. She was twelve. Twelve years old when she graduated with her doctorate, eight years after she’d started her studies.
“A genius,” her father’s coworkers would remark.
“A real prodigy,” her mother’s friends would smile as they patted her head.
“A gifted child,” her professors would say whenever they were asked about her.
She’s sixteen now. Dr. Nakamura has seen to it that her patients receive the best care. The long shifts are difficult, but she always feels better after another cup of coffee, which she ironically advises her patients to avoid in excess.
She isn’t the only Dr. Nakamura at the hospital, yes, since there’s her father and a bunch of others, but she’s always been the center of attention. Everyone knows her—the talented young cardiologist with the long, messy hair that hasn’t seen a shower in two months, the mouth that curves downwards all the time and has only ever tasted coffee for years.
And now she’s going to Hope’s Peak Private Academy. Everyone wants to go there, don’t they? Her parents went there too. This is an achievement most can only ever dream of accomplishing. But for her, it’s a dream within reach.
“Everything will be alright,” she reminds herself for the umpteenth time as she packs her bags.
She couldn’t be more wrong.
