Today is Friday; Angel was spending their day-off playing and hanging out with DogDay. Their poor puppy had barely seen them all week, so they decided that today would be a parent-kid day.
“Are you ready, bud?” They called out as they waved the tennis ball in their hand.
DogDay nodded enthusiastically, his tail wagging and his hands flapping. They could see his big smile from underneath his pacifier.
“Okay, go fetch!” Angel called out for about the 20th time as they threw the ball into the yard.
The cocker spaniel yipped in delight as he chased the ball, stumbling a bit on his baggy pant legs but never stopping once. He was so focused on running and chasing that he didn’t realize he was heading straight towards the big oak in the yard.
Angel’s eyes widened and they waved their arms frantically to try and get his attention. “DogDay, watch out! The tree!!” They shouted, but it was too late. DogDay ran face first into the rigid bark, yelping out in pain. He fell backwards and onto his behind, the grass barely cushioning his fall. He began to whine and sniffle as he covered his face, tucking his legs to his chest.
They immediately ran to his side, kneeling down to his level. “Oh honey, are you okay?” Angel said softly, grabbing his hands to try and see his face. He whimpered as he let his hands fall to his side, his eyes full of tears. He had a nasty scrape on his forehead and on his cheek, and a bloody nose. He hiccuped, and then he began to sob.
His voice box crackled as he cried out in pain, his pacifier falling out and onto the ground, the blood pouring from his nose dripped into his mouth.
At the taste of the blood he started to hyperventilate, kicking his legs and squirming around anxiously. He gripped Angel’s shirt like it was the only thing keeping him alive. “M-Mama!!” he bawled. “Hey, hey, shhh…. It’s alright, sweetheart, it’s okay,” They whispered to him, gently rubbing his back and hugging him. “You’re okay,” they reassured him.
“I know it hurts, but I need to get up so I can grab the medical supplies to make you feel better. Can you let me go just for a minute?”
He shook his head vigorously and sobbed harder. “N-No, Mama, No..!! No leave…!!” He hiccuped and wailed as he pushed his head into their side, staining their shirt with tears and blood. “No… No alone again, p-please…!” He whispered fervently.
He wasn’t going to let go.
“Okay, it’s okay. I’m not going anywhere, I promise.” They should call Poppy and Kissy to come and bring them what they need. They covered DogDay’s sensitive ears and shouted over their shoulder towards the house. “Poppy, Kissy, can you please bring out the bandaids and antibiotic ointment?! DogDay had a bit of an accident!!”
Assuming that the two toys heard their call, they shifted their attention back to their distressed puppy. “Shhh… Shhh, it’s okay,” they shushed as they wiped the tears from his eyes. “It’s okay. Do you think we can take some deep breaths together?” They asked him softly, tilting his head so he was facing them. He nodded, hiccuping, holding his hands close to his chest.
“Alright, ready? 1… 2… 3… 4.” They said before they took a deep breath in, DogDay copying their action. “Hold for 6 seconds, and… Breathe out.” They exhaled, and DogDay copied. The two sat and did the breathing exercise for a few minutes; His breath shuddered as he inhaled and exhaled, but he was slowly beginning to calm down. As they continued their exercise with him, Angel heard soft thumping footsteps from behind them. They glanced back to see Kissy heading towards the two with Poppy on her shoulder, the porcelain doll holding the first aid kit in her hands.
“Hello, girls,” Angel said softly, still rubbing DogDay’s back. His wails were reduced to just small sniffles now, and he looked much more tired. “Did you bring what I asked?”
Kissy nodded as she grabbed Poppy from off her shoulder and lowered her to the ground. “Yes. Here you go, Angel.” The doll said as she handed the first aid kit to the human. Angel nodded in a silent ‘Thank You,’ before she wandered around to DogDay’s side and gave him a half-hug. Kissy did the same, sitting next to him and putting a hand around his shoulder. He closed his eyes and chuffed, leaning into the pink creature.
Angel took this as an opportunity to start cleaning up his wounds.
They grabbed one of the small alcohol pads from the first aid kit and started to wipe away the dirt and blood from the scrape on his forehead. He flinched and whined at the cold contact; Kissy grabbed his hand and squeezed it to comfort him, while Poppy murmured quiet sympathies. He shivered, but then he relaxed. “Good boy,” Angel said in reassurance, earning a weak tail wag.
They smiled and continued to clean his wounds, moving on to wipe the scrape on his cheek. Once both scrapes were disinfected and ready, they applied a small dot of antibiotic ointment to each one. Then, they moved to grab the boxes of bandaids from the first aid kit.
They held the pair of options up to DogDay.
“Which ones would you like? Stars, or Dinosaurs?” DogDay opened his eyes, and they shone with sheer joy. He excitedly pointed at the star-patterned bandaid box. “Okay, stars it is!” They exclaimed as they grabbed two bandaids from the box. Carefully, they peeled the small bandages out of their wrapper and placed them over the scrapes on DogDay’s face. They turned over and grabbed a napkin, wetting it before cleaning the remaining dried blood from his nose.
“There we go! Do you feel better now, bud?”
DogDay nodded in response. “Yes, Mama…” he mumbled, a small grin gracing his lips. He yawned, rubbing his eye. Poor puppy worked himself up so badly. He probably needed a nap now.
Angel stood up and dusted themself off, before offering a hand to the cocker spaniel. “I think we should go inside and take a nap. How does that sound?” DogDay nodded again, taking their hand in his. He struggled to stand, his legs weak, and Kissy had to help him up. Once he was off the ground, he leaned most of his weight on Angel. Though he was a bit heavy, they led him back inside and up to their room with a smile.
Angel opened the door and guided DogDay to their shared bed. He crawled on top of the covers and over to the side of the bed he claimed, curling up in a ball like a real dog would. He huffed and whined, wordlessly begging them to come and lay with him.
“Yes, I’m going, DogDay. Give me just one second,” they said as they sat on the edge of the bed, untying their shoes before placing them in their designated cubby. Once the shoes were put away, they climbed into bed with their puppy.
They adjusted themself to lay comfortably beside DogDay, to which he promptly uncurled and crawled to snuggle up against them and rest his head on their chest.
He nuzzled his bandaged cheek on their shirt, positioning himself until his ear was directly over their heart. Angel smiled and grabbed the pacifier he had dropped earlier, wiping it clean with a pacifier wipe. They carefully put it back in his mouth and then they started to pet behind his ears. He sighed with relief, his whole body finally releasing its tension. His eyes began to flutter closed, and he mumbled a soft and nearly unintelligible ‘goodnight’ as he drifted to sleep.
Angel kissed his forehead. “Goodnight, sweetheart. Sleep well.” They whispered before closing their own eyes and allowing themself to rest.
