Work Text:
Boys workin’ on empty
Is that the kind of way to face the burning heat
I just think about my baby
I’m so full of love I can barely eat

Lucy had a feeling that her and Tim probably listened to very different music from the day she met him. She loved Pop music, as well as soul, R&B and Classical music.
Tim, on the other hand, she assumed he only really listened to things from the late 80’s-90’s that she definitely had never heard of.
But one day, on a particularly long stakeout, one of her favorite songs came on the radio. As Hozier’s deep, soulful voice was recognized, she couldn't help but turn it up slightly.
“Tim, you actually know this song?” She said, surprised, when she heard him lightly humming the melody of Take Me to Church.
“Of course I do, this song was everywhere a few years ago, plus Hozier’s one of the only artists from this decade with meaningful lyrics.” He said nonchalantly.
“Of course you’d think that, you’re ancient. But I actually really enjoy his music, too.” Lucy said, with a smile playing around her lips.
“I’m only 9 years older than you, Boot” He said.
They stayed silent for the rest of the song, taking in the music and each other's presence.

There’s nothing sweeter than my baby
I’d never want once from the cherry tree
‘Cause my baby’s sweet as can be
She give me toothaches just from kissing me

Tim woke up slowly, coming to the realization that the warm, naked body of his girlfriend was nowhere to be found. As he got up, and put on some sweat pants to go look for her, he heard a familiar tune from the kitchen.
When he opened the door, he was met with the light guitar of Like Real People Do, the hungering smell of pancakes, and the vision of his love clad in only his button-up and her underwear, and was immediately rendered speechless.
“Hey! I see Sleeping beauty is finally awake.” Lucy said, walking over to greet him with a kiss, which he deepened.
He pulled away, breathless, and said “How’d you know this is one of my favorite songs, Luce?”
“You do?” she said. “I knew you liked Hozier, but I imagined one of your favorite song would be from some rock band from the 90’s that no one's ever heard of, or like, a Coldplay song.”
“Besides, I was just thinking about you and this song came on.” She said before leaving him with one more peck before going back to making their breakfast.

When my time comes around
Lay me gently in the cold dark earth
No grave can hold my body down
I’ll crawl home to her

Lucy, well to put it simple, was having the worst month of her life.
Her and Tims argument before Nolans wedding, failing the detectives exam, shooting a suspect, then Tim leaving her in the dark, Tamara moving out, and ultimately, Tim leaving her.
And all of that lead her here, driving home from a shift where she was really just going through the motions of her job, only tasked with simple calls she could complete without really having to be mentally present.
Then, She noticed, one of her and Tim's favorite artists had come up in her spotify shuffle. She hesitated, not knowing whether she could handle hearing something they once shared their love for, but in the end, turned it up.
Lucy listened to the lyrics of Unknown/Nth, and thought about everything over the last 10 months with Tim.
It dawned on her that in retrospect, this was almost inevitable.
They never really talked anything through since they got together, too afraid to let their newfound romance slip from their fingertips. It all seemed to have come to a head in the last week, and she realized Tim felt like if he talked to her, let her see the most dark and broken parts of him, she would have left. So, he left her.
She then proceeded to take a different exit than the one she usually used to get to her apartment.
Her whole body was filled with nerves at the mere thought of the conversation she was about to have, but she knew it needed to happen.
She knocked on his door, holding her breath until the door finally opened.
“Hey, um, W-What are you doing here?” Tim said.
“We need to talk. You never gave me the chance, Tim, to say anything in that parking lot.”
So, he opened the door wider and finally, after 2 months of yearning for each other, for a glimmer of hope, they talked, yelled, cried, and ultimately fell asleep tangled together at the end of the night.

When my baby found me, I was three days on a drunken sin
I woke with her walls around me
Nothing in her room but an empty crib
And I was burnin up a fever, I didn't care much how long i lived
But I swear I thought I dreamed her, she never asked me once about the wrong I did

“Are you ready, Mrs. Bradford?” Tim spoke, a smile on his face she had never seen from him before.
“More than ever, Tim.”
They stepped on the dancefloor that was surrounded by their friends and family. After 4 years of friendship, and almost 2.5 years of dating, Lucy and Tim were finally married.
It was a small affair, they chose a small outdoor venue just outside of Los Angeles.
They were wrapped up in eachother, swaying along to Hozier’s Work Song, their foreheads pressed together and arms around each other, happily married.
“You know, I kind of always thought this might be our wedding song.” Lucy whispered.
“How come?”
“I figured Hozier always brought us closer to each other, so, it’s only fitting.”
Tim hummed in reply and held her tighter, almost in disbelief they were there, Husband and Wife.
