Patrick had too much power.
Squidward had told him of his weakness and ambition, Spongebob knew what could happen with that dangerous mix.
Patrick had to die.
It's true that spongebob had no personal interest in striking him, but it was in the best interest for the fish. The sardines wanted him crowned, the fish wanted someone else to lead, but how might being mayor change him? Evil can come from good, just as stinging jellyfish come out on sunny sea bottom days. If Patrick was crowned it would only give him power to do damage.

“Man, nowhere in the ocean was quite tonight cause some sardine yelled in the middles of the night “Help, someone! They’re murdering Partick!” or something.” Parick says
A sardine enters,
“My guru?”
“Go tell the other sardines that we need… a sacrifice… oh and someone to interpret a dream”
“I will, almighty guru.”

The screaming Sardine asks “What are you doing, Patrick? Are you planning to go out? You are not leaving the rock today.”
“I must go out, the volcano has only seen my open eyes, but I'm sure that once it sees my face and I close my eyes, it will vanish.”
“Patrick, I never believe in wisdom except the wisdom shared by you all knowing one, but this dream frightened me, the other sardines told me the fish police have seen horrid sights too! A sardine told me they saw a lionfish lay eggs on the streets and the graves opened and thrust out their dead!”
“Ew” was all Patrick said in response.

Partick made his way to the City hall, followed by Spongebob, Squidward, Sandy, Larry and Garry.
“Oh hi guys!” Patrick being oblivious to the shards of coral they each held.
“You can't do this Patrick.” Squidward advanced towards him.
“Why not?” A genuine question.
Before Squidward had the chance to respond Garry stabbed Patrick in the chest, the first stab of a new beginning.
Soon after Garry’s first move the rest of the crowd rushed him stabbing whichever part of his gelatinous body they could reach.
Seconds turned into minutes as Spongebob stood not making a move as he watched his BFF, the one he could have fun if they went out, or just sit around and do nothing. They used to be SpongeRick now he was just… sponge.
What is a macaroni without cheese?
What is the french without the fry?
Nobody changed his one to two like Patrick.
The assassins moved away from Patricks slumped body.
Spongebob walked toward him, coral shard in hand.
Parick saw him at last. “Bruh, you to Spongebob? You too?”
Spongebob delivered the final stab into Patricks heart, which he didn’t actually have since starfishes don’t actually have blood but that's not important.
And with a kiss he died.
