Work Text:
Wheein has loved dancing since she was a child. She was always swaying to the rhythm of any tune that felt right to her, from the moment her two feet could stand on their own and support the weight of her little baby body. That love of moving to the rhythm of music only grew with the years, leading her to enroll in dancing classes of every music genre known to humankind.
Pop? Her favorite. Breakdance? She was a master. Contemporary dance? Not a problem, she would twist and turn in every direction. Traditional dances? She even won a national competition once.
She couldn’t find a better way to express her emotions than twirling, jumping, and moving her arms and legs to the sweet melody a song could provide. Dancing helped her channel her anger, frustration, or sadness into something beautiful that her words always fell short to describe. Just like her body needed air and water, it also needed dancing and music to keep on living.
And now, her whole body felt like starving, because Wheein had been wanting to go to a new gay club she found in Itaewon for weeks. She heard the DJ of the club played the best pop music from both Korea and western countries, and it even had themed nights every weekend.
She pestered Hyejin and Byul about going until they agreed, promising she would buy the first round of drinks if they’d go with her.
“Maybe you’ll find someone to smooch too.” Said Hyejin mockingly. “So you don’t have to keep third-wheeling between Byul and me.”
“Hyejin-ah!” Whined Wheein. “Why are you like this! You know I’m more than happy to go with just you two, I don’t need nobody to keep me company.”
Her best friend has been dating Byul for years (Wheein couldn’t even remember how many). Where Hyejin went, Byul was beside her right away, just like Wheein. The trio were pretty much inseparable, and Wheein didn’t really care about being beside the couple while they held hands. It was Hyejin who would always try to overdo the PDA when she hung out with them, but Byul, being the respectful woman she was, would put a stop to her antics.
“I know, I know. You’re an independent woman who doesn’t need anybody to dance with, blah, blah, blah.” Hyejin kept mocking her, rolling her eyes. “But tell me, wouldn't it be better to feel another body against yours, moving together to the rhythm of some sensual bass, their lips kissing your neck and their hands firmly holding your hips… Ah, I’m so going to fuck my girlfriend tonight.”
“You’re so crude, Hyejin-ah! Why am I even friends with you!” Wheein covered her ears as if it would keep away the words her best friend put on her head. She saw both women as her sisters and she really didn’t need nor wanted to imagine them doing anything more than kissing and being cute together.
“Because you love me.” Singonged Hyejin with a cheeky smile.
“You’re lucky I do, or I would just go with Byulyi-unnie to the party.” Wheein stuck her tongue out. Their arguments always had a child-like tone, never being too serious about annoying each other.
“Whatever you say, babe. Now get ready, she said she’s coming to get us in thirty minutes.”
*
When the three of them arrived at the club, music was already blasting loudly from the speakers. The dance floor was packed with people, sweaty bodies moving alongside each other to the beat of a Scissor Sisters song that Wheein couldn’t remember the name of at that moment.
They went to the bar, and Wheein bought tequila shots for her and Hyejin, as she promised. Byul was their designated driver, so she stuck to an alcohol-free beer for the night. Then, the two younger girls asked for some fruity cocktails, and the trio chatted animatedly (or tried to) over the music for a couple of minutes.
“Has someone caught your attention already, Wheenie?” Shouted Byul right into her ear. The song playing was way too loud; the heavy bass barely left any space to hear anything else.
“Not really.” Shouted Wheein back. The buzz of the alcohol had warmed her body, and the high and rhythmic beats were begging her to step onto the dance floor. “But I wanna dance. Come with me, unnie?”
“Sure! Are you coming too, baby?” Byul asked Hyejin, who just made a dismissal gesture with her hand.
“You two go first. I’ll finish my drink and join you once I’m done.”
Byul gave her girlfriend a short kiss and took Wheein’s hands, guiding her to the mass of dancing bodies.
Wheein liked dancing with Byul. She had a particular way of moving that was both soft and sharp at the same time, which was very alluring to anybody, including Wheein. She was glad Hyejin wasn’t a jealous person or insecure about her relationship because Wheein always had so much fun dancing with Byul; she was a great dance partner. She also knew the older woman had eyes only for her best friend and would never cross any limits with Wheein.
Two and a half songs had played already when, over the shoulder of her friend, she saw a woman dancing like there was no tomorrow. Her hands were in the air, and she was screaming all the lyrics of a ‘Party in the USA’ remix. She wore heavy makeup, her hair was tied in a high ponytail, and she was wearing a short silver sequin dress with high black boots. She was beautiful, breathtaking even, but her presence confused Wheein.
“That’s the most heterosexual woman I’ve ever seen in my life. What is she even doing in a gay club?” Shouted Wheein into Byul’s ear.
The older woman turned around to see what she was talking about and laughed.
“She really does look straight. But who knows, Wheenie, she could be bi or pan… She could be looking for good music, or maybe she feels safer here. Who knows! The possibilities are endless!”
“Okay, smartass, I know I shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.” Wheein rolled her eyes, her voice filled with sarcasm. “You and Hyejinie are really made for each other; you guys are insufferable.”
There was no real bite behind her words, and Byul knew this as she laughed again loudly.
“I love you too, Wheenie.” She said, still giggling. “Maybe you should ask her if she wants to dance.”
“But I’m dancing with you right now, I don’t wanna leave you alone.”
As if on cue, a set of arms held Wheein from behind. “Mind if I steal my girlfriend for a couple of songs, babe?”
Hyejin hugged her best friend and swayed her hips, following the rhythm of the song. She was looking directly at Byul, her eyes hungry and dangerous. Byul noticed this too and started dancing harder, her hip-thrusts getting sharper and more prominent. Wheein knew where this was going, so she handed her dance partner over for the night.
“She’s all yours, babe.”
Hyejin kissed Wheein’s cheek and took one of Byul’s hands, dragging her along to a more secluded corner of the club. Wheein didn’t intend to see what was going to happen there, so she just kept dancing on her own, not really minding it. Suddenly, enthusiastic screams made her turn around to see what the big deal was. Her jaw opened in surprise when she saw the same supposedly-straight-woman on the floor, voguing, duckwalking and performing on the floor like an expert. Some drag queens were hyping the woman up, screaming things like YES, MOTHER or SHOW THEM HOW IT’S DONE YONGSUN.
Maybe Byul was right, and Wheein shouldn’t have been so quick to judge her. But she would never tell her that, or her friend would tease her until the end of time.
The woman (Yongsun, she guessed from the screams of the people surrounding her) ended her dance with a spin and a dip that had everybody in the club hollering and screaming in ecstasy. Wheein understood the reaction of the public, the woman’s performance was incredible. She couldn’t take her eyes off of her; Yongsun demanded all the attention of the room, as if she was in charge of it (and maybe she was).
She clearly knew what she was doing because she executed every step with the precision and grace of someone who has been doing it for years. Wheein would know this, as she also had years of dance embedded in her brain. Also, no straight woman would ever be able to dance like that.
Yongsun stepped away, thanking every person who praised her performance and walking in the direction of the bar. Wheein was quick to follow her, not really knowing why or what to say to her. She just wanted to be close, to breathe the same air as the woman who had left her breathless seconds ago.
“Excuse me, miss Yongsun?”
The woman turned around, a bottle of water in her hand and a straw connecting it to her mouth. She looked at Wheein, surprised but bowed politely.
“Hello, miss…”
“Whee-, huh, my name is Wheein.” She didn’t know why she felt so nervous all of a sudden. Okay, the other woman looked more intimidating up close, with the strong makeup accentuating her cheekbones and sharp eyes. Her lips were painted with a matte red lipstick, hypnotizing the younger dancer.
Yongsun noticed this and smirked, her whole posture changing from relaxed to something more dangerous and wild. She took Wheein’s hand and kissed it.
“Hello, Wheein, to what do I owe the pleasure?”
Wheein's heart skipped a beat. She felt like a prey getting caught in a corner, knowing there was nothing she could do to escape the claws of this woman. Her aura was intoxicating, alluring, and all that Wheein could and wanted to do was to give in. And, to be honest, there were worse fates than falling into the trap and beauty of another woman.
“I just wanted to say that your performance was out of this world! I’ve been dancing since I was a toddler, but you just blew my mind. I’m still in awe, I’ve never seen anybody vogue like you did tonight.”
Even under the neon lights of the club, Wheein could see something akin to a blush on Yongsun’s face. “Thank you so much, Wheein, I really appreciate it.”
She smiled shyly, her fierce demeanor vanishing as quickly as it came. Wheein couldn’t understand how someone who destroyed the dance floor could get so flustered with such a simple compliment. It was endearing.
“Where did you learn to dance like that? I’m serious, I’ve been to a lot of ballrooms in the past, but you could easily out-dance all of them.”
Yongsun laughed brightly and happily, and Wheein could only smile with her. She was down bad for a woman she barely met a couple of minutes ago. Byul and Hyejin would never let this go if they saw her.
“You’re too sweet, Wheein! I don’t really think I’m that good, but the queens that were with me taught me a thing or two about voguing. I still have much to learn, though. Still, thank you for the compliment.”
“I know you’re probably tired from all the twirling and dropping you did out there, but if you still have some energy, maybe you’d want to dance with me?” Wheein didn’t think twice and shot her shot. This woman was incredible, beautiful, and danced like a goddess; she wanted to spend the rest of the night with her on the dance floor.
“Cute and daring, I do love that in a woman.” Yongsun spoke directly into Wheein’s ear, her tone low and seductive. A chill ran down her spine, and she couldn’t do anything but sigh. “Show me what you got, miss Wheein.”
She took Yongsun’s hand immediately and guided her back onto the dance floor. The promise of something more hung in the air as the two women moved together to the beat of a slower song.
Wheein turned around, pressing her back against the other woman, grinding shamelessly, and she swore she heard her whimper. Yongsun held her hips and moved at the same rhythm, her mouth panting closely to Wheein’s ear.
The tension was palpable; electricity ran through them every time they touched, and the warm atmosphere didn’t help them cool any of their sensations down. Every step was a challenge to see who would bend and break first, who would give up and fall into the other’s net.
It was a sensual game; every touch was premeditated and calculated, both of them determined to win a ridiculous competition that wouldn’t really have losers.
Wheein grinded again, and Yongsun just broke. She turned Wheein around and kissed her rough and hard. The kiss was wet, desperate, almost animalistic, both of them trying to dominate and own the other.
Only the need for oxygen put them apart, both women breathing heavily. They looked at each other with hunger and need, the heat of their bodies burning them like lava.
“Wanna get out of here?” Asked Yongsun, still looking directly into the younger woman’s eyes.
“I thought you’d never ask.”
Wheein came here to dance with her friends. She never thought she would leave this place hand in hand with the most smoking hot woman in the world, but she wasn’t going to complain about it. She quickly texted Byul and Hyejin that she’d see them tomorrow, no doubt that they’d want to know about her night with what she thought was the most straight woman in the world.
