Heart like a grave

Work Text:

You've waited so long - too long - for your only love to return. You dreamed of this moment, not believing it could come true, praying that one day you would be able to hold him again.
But it's late now. Too late.
You can't look him in the eye or get up to hug him. If you do, your last illusion will collapse. You will see what these years, so wrong, have transformed you into, and he will see it too. You won't even be able to pretend that at least he will be spared the knowledge of the truth.
Even your goodbye would have been easier to bear if your children were still by your side. They would soothe their father's pain and heal his wounds, and you could leave without regrets.
You would have rather not seen him again at all. If he had died with his brother - if you had both died - you wouldn't have to face this moment. Not even knowing that he has returned to you will comfort your heart.
The cold stone beneath you should be a body still alive and warm. You hoped that something of the life you might have had would remain.
Nienor might have smiled at finally meeting her father.
You thought Lalaith's tomb was enough of a burden to break you, yet you keep breathing. You had sworn that you would wait until Húrin returned home.
But now, you don't want to see his eyes and the horror that dwells there. If you don't, maybe you can believe that these years were never real.
You don't cry. Your tears won't wash away reality.
And they are calling you. Whatever fate awaits you, you know that your children are waiting for you. You won't leave them alone for much longer.
You hope that, one day, Húrin will be able to reach you. You hope that you will not be separated again, that you will be able to have in death what you could not have in life.
Perhaps, then, you will be able to rejoice in his return.
