Work Text:

The room was quiet and still as everyone was just waiting for those five minutes to be up so they could give Jake the drug to wake him up.

“30 more seconds…” Lexy said quietly under her breath.

Devon didn’t speak the whole time since Jake had been induced and held his hand tight through it all.

“Okay, the five minutes are up, we have to wake him up.” Devon exclaimed, reaching for the drug to give to him.

“Let’s wait a bit longer before we try anything else.” Pryce suggested, stopping Devon’s hand from moving towards it. “This will give him enough time to get the job done.”

Devon looked at him with wide eyes and shook his head in disbelief. “Are you fucking kidding me? No, we're doing this right now.”

He didn’t wait anymore, he took off the cap of the needle and carefully inserted it into Jake’s arm.

When he pulled out of there, Jake twitched but stayed asleep. The drug had worked perfectly, no problems on waking him up after a few minutes of its use. It only took a few to bring him back to life. He started to stir, starting to come back into consciousness, his eyes slowly opened.

“Welcome back to the world of the living.” Devon joked, relieved to see that Jake was alright and conscious again. Devon smiled softly at him while Jake yawned and sat up with a groan. The moment he saw Devon smile he relaxed too, and smiled in return.

Jake stretched his arms, feeling tired but also a little energized. His whole body felt tingly with a nice warm buzz. He looked around, his eyes falling upon the people gathered in the room. “Hey… What’s going on?” He asked curiously.

“Did you do it? Did Chucky tell you where Caroline is?” Lexy demanded to know, her voice shaking.

Jake looks at her in a confusing manner as if he is trying to figure out what she was talking about. “Um… why are you willingly talking to me? I thought you hated me. And who’s Chucky?”

“Jake, you’re not funny. We’ve been past that, you’re basically my brother at this point. You went to visit Chucky right? ” Lexy replied, giving him a look of exasperation. She looked over at Devon who still sat next to him.

“Something’s not right… ” Devon said, frowning deeply. His eyes were trained intently onto Jake’s face. When he saw the realization dawn on Jake, his frown deepened. “That’s impossible. That’s not… Jake, what year do you think we’re in?”

Jake looked between the two of them confused but still couldn’t understand their behavior. “The year is 2021. Right?”

It was silent between all of them, nobody dared uttered a single word. Devon let go of Jake’s hand to run his fingers through his hair nervously. He glanced quickly at Lexy who was just as worried as he was, his heart racing in his chest.

“What was in that drug? What did you do to him!” Devon screamed directly in Pryce’s face, looking like he was about to break down any minute. “I- It was safe, I swear, we’ve used this a bunch of times.” Pryce explained frantically when he saw how terrified Devon looked.

Devon ’s heart thundered loudly against his chest, his breathing labored and uneven as tears pooled in his eyes. “Well, clearly there’s something wrong with the drug if he can’t remember shit from the past two years.”

He walked over back to Jake, bent down and took his hands in his. His palms felt cold and clammy. The tremors running through his hands made it hard to keep his grip on Jake. “Jake, do you remember who I am?”

“Yeah, of course, you’re Devon. I kind’ve had a crush on you for forever but was too scared to let you know…” He looks down at his and Devon’s hands intertwined. “But it looks like we’ve figured that out.” He smiles and looks at Lexy, who had tears streaming down her cheeks and was looking at them with worry written plainly across her features.

Jake’s brow furrowed even deeper and he tried to pull away from Devon, “Why are you all looking at me like that?”

“Don’t freak out okay? I don’t want to hurt you.” Devon says, desperation laced into his tone and his voice cracking. “It’s going to sound really weird but you currently have amnesia from being in a place called the spirit realm to stop a serial killer possessed doll and we don't know if it's temporary or not until we go to the hospital.” Devon pauses, taking a breath and tries to calm himself down, “Can you just trust us for one second?”

There was a pause and then finally, hesitantly, “Of course, Dev.” He looked up at Devon and gave him a reassuring smile.

Jake was confused by everything happening, but he trusted Devon. Devon lets go of Jake’s hands and stands straight up, wiping the tears from the sides of his face. “I need some air.” He walks out of the room without another word, leaving everyone completely speechless except Pryce. Lexy walks out with him without saying a word.

“Hey…you okay?” Lexy asks, concerned about lacing her voice. She gently places her hand on his shoulder.

“Lex, I’m scared, he wasn’t supposed to have any brain damage, we’ve done exactly five minutes, I don't understand.” Devon said, panic lacing his voice.

Lexy sighs and pulls him into a hug, “We’re going to figure it out like we always do, his memory loss can be temporary and he will be fine.” “But, for now, we have to be strong for him, I can only imagine how he feels not knowing anything from the past two years.” She added in a low tone.

Fear in their chests only grew stronger the more they tried to convince themselves that this was possible. They were going to lose him, they weren't sure if this was just a temporary thing or not, but either way, they would miss out on Jake. And it would kill them both inside to find out.
