Vows

Summary:

Robbie asks Kelly a very important question.

Work Text:

The pack was all gathered in the Bennett house, watching as Robbie nervously paced a hole in the floor while he rambled. “And I know I already gave him my wolf and all that, but this is, like, different, and I just want to do this right. And—I know it’s probably dumb, but—I just—I mean, it’d mean a lot. Because you all mean a lot to him and us, you know? So to have your guy’s approval would be, you know…” He paused, coming to a halt, and sighed as he stared down at the floor, his ears turning red, before looking back up at them all. “Is this stupid?” He muttered.

“It’s not stupid,” Elizabeth said, a glint in her eyes as she stood up and put a hand on his shoulder. “It’s how you feel. There’s nothing stupid about that.”

He looked up at her over the rim of his glasses, a hint of blush coloring his cheeks. “Yeah?”

“Nothing would make me happier.” She said as she enveloped him in her arms while Robbie blinked back tears.

Through the blurry haze of tears he could see Ox  in front of him, and he placed a gentle but firm hand on Robbie’s shoulder. “You’re pack. We’ll support you guys no matter what,” he told him gently.

“Really?”

Ox gave a curt nod.
“Always,” he heard Joe say as he came to stand next to Ox.

The rest of the pack came then, surrounding him on all sides as they all reached out their hands to him, touching, always touching. He felt their supportive hands on his back, in his hair, wrapped around him and squeezing as he buried his face in Elizabeth’s neck who held him close.
“You’ll always have our approval, lobito,” Rico said from somewhere behind him. “Mystical Moon Magic and all that.”
“Yeah, we love Mystical Moon Magic.” Chris said.

“And mini muffins.” Tanner added helpfully, then after a moment, “But mostly the mini muffins.”

“Idiots,” Jessie muttered. “Just don’t screw it up, all right?” She wrapped on arm around his shoulders and squeezed.

“Better listen to her, kid. Can’t have you keep coming over with your issues. Mark and I need our space.” He felt Gordo ruffle his hair and looked over to see Mark hiding his secret smile.

“Gross, Gordo” Carter moaned, the timber wolf grumbling in agreeance. “That’s my Uncle.”

Among them, Robbie felt a steady thrum of packpackpack.

***

Robbie was walking alongside Kelly in their territory—to their spot. To the tree where they had given each other their stone wolves—promising themselves to each other. He had done it once; he could do it again, Robbie thought as the little black box burned a hole in his pocket. He still couldn’t help but be nervous, and he knew Kelly could feel it too; he could hear his heartbeat frantically beating.

Kelly knew something important was coming; of course he did, and he was giving Robbie the space to do whatever he needed to do.

Robbie took a deep breath and said, “Kelly.”

“Robbie,” Kelly mirrored, smirking at him.

Robbie returned a small smile. “I, uh, the reason I wanted to talk to you. Out here, in our spot, is, uh, because well.” He nervously fiddled with his hands, blush coloring his face. “It’s an important spot. As you know, I mean, of course you do—you kissed me here. First.” He glanced at Kelly, smiling fondly at the memory. “And you gave me your wolf here. And I gave you mine. And that’s great. It’s good. Obviously. And I know we already did all that and promised ourselves to each other. And I know we’re not exactly mated yet, which is fine!” he rushed hurriedly. “I’m totally fine waiting!”

Kelly looked amused. “Robbie, it’s ok. I don’t mind. I think maybe it’s time... I mean, I think I might be... no. I am. I am ready. To be with you, I mean.” Robbie froze. He stared at Kelly, wide-eyed, the color in his face deepening. Kelly continued in a rush, attempting to make Robbie less nervous.“Unless you’re not ready, that’s totally fine too; it’s understandable.”

“No.”

“No?”

Robbie shook his head, “No, I mean, not no. Just that… No, I am ready. Like, totally! But also, ugh. I had a reason for bringing you out here. A question. An important question.”

“Oh. Right. Sorry. Go ahead.” Kelly nodded and took a small step back. .

“You surprised me. I’m sort of thrown off here,” Robbie admitted, rubbing the back of his head with his hand as he started pacing.

Kelly came forward and stood in front of him so that he was forced to stop and put a hand on his shoulder. “Take your time. I’m not going anywhere,” he said. Robbie softened at that.

“I know.” Robbie smiled at him. Then Robbie sighed, taking a breath as he felt the gentle breeze around them, the soft grass underneath them, and the scent of Kelly wafting over him. It was grass, lake water, and sunshine.

He decided to try again. “Kelly Bennett,” he said, staring at Kelly, their eyes colliding like a car crash.

“Robbie Fontaine,” Kelly breathed, smiling at him, and Robbie’s heart stuttered at the sound of his name on Kelly’s lips.

Kelly gave a breath of laughter at that, covering his mouth with his hand. Robbie reached out and grabbed it, holding it between them. Kelly looked surprised by such forwardness but then relaxed into it, returning his grip tightly.

“I love you, and I know we already promised ourselves to each other. I gave you my wolf. And you gave me yours. And I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you. Because of that, I thought that maybe, well,” His heart was racing now, and he was struggling to blink back tears. He swallowed, and slowly, while still holding Kelly’s hand, he sank down to one knee. He used his free hand to pull a little black box out of his pocket and he held it out in front of him.

“Kelly Abel Bennett. Would you do me the honor of marrying me? And becoming not only my mate but my husband—where we can grow old together, and every day I will make sure you never regret it; where I will be the best mate you could ever hope for as long as we live. So, Kelly Abel Bennet, will you marry me?”

Kelly looked down at Robbie; his ice-blue eyes were glistening, and he was trying to blink back the tears. “Are you serious?” he breathed.

“Ye-es?”

Kelly slowly nodded. “I-yes. Let’s do it. Okay.”

“Okay?”

“Okay.”

Robbie stood up and lifted Kelly’s hand as Kelly opened the box for him and allowed Robbie to place the band on his finger.

Kelly then pulled Robbie into him, embracing him as he buried his face in Robbie’s neck. Robbie whispered, “I’m going to be the best husband, Kelly. Just wait and see.”

Kelly pulled away, his eyes glistening, then cupped Robbie’s checks and kissed him.

Robbie looked up at Kelly, and oh, how he smiled.

***

It had been a few weeks since Robbie had proposed to Kelly. They had gone back to the Bennett house to give the pack the news, but they found them all waiting for them with a knowing look. Kelly blushed as Jesse and Bambi held his hand, staring at the gold band on his finger that had flecks of sapphire embedded in it, matching Kelly’s ice-blue eyes.

Since then, it had been nonstop wedding talk and suggestions, and they had been trying to appease everyone, and they were already exhausted from the whole ordeal.

“When’s the date?” Joe asked, glancing at the calendar that was already mostly full of meetings and plans with other packs and Alpha business.

“Where are you going to have it?” Jessie asked excitedly.

“Who’s going to be the best man?” Carter nudged Kelly knowingly.

And of course, Rico kept making comments about their wedding night.

After a while, it was starting to get to them.

It was late one night in the Bennett house, and they finally had a moment to themselves. Kelly had gone down to the kitchen for a glass of water and had found Robbie sitting on the couch already, as if waiting for him. Robbie gave him a small smile as Kelly came to sit next to him, leaning his head on Robbie’s shoulder and interlacing their fingers together.

“It’s a lot.” Robbie told him.

“Yeah.”

“I didn’t think it would be like this. I didn’t think everyone would be so…” he trailed off as if searching for a word that wasn’t too offensive.

Kelly smirked at that. “Involved?”

“Yeah,” Robbie sighed.

Kelly nodded. “I get that. We don’t have to do this if you don’t want to. I mean, it’s okay if you know, “ he shrugged, “if you change your mind. I get it.”

Robbie sat up suddenly, looking at Kelly wide-eyed. “No! No, I mean, I want to it’s just-I mean, did you change your mind?”

Kelly shook his head. “Of course not.”

“Good. That’s…good. Maybe we can just… do it our way.”

Kelly laughed, “You mean, like eloping to Vegas?”

Robbie blushed, rubbing the back of his hair with has hand and shrugged. “If you want.”

Kelly stopped at that, his eyes wide. “You mean that?”

Robbie bit his lip before shyly glancing at Kelly, “Well, Yeah. I don’t really care where we have it or how we do it I-I’ll marry you anywhere you want, anytime you you want. I just want to be married to you.” He said, blush coloring his cheeks. “Is that… okay?”

Kelly tilted his head, his eyes searching Robbie’s, “Of course it is.” He said, his voice barely a whisper. He settled back to the couch, resting his head on Robbie’s shoulder once more as he traced the back of Robbie’s hand with his thumb. A comfortable silence settled over them.

“Robbie?”

“Hm?”

“I want to be married to you too.” Kelly whispered and he could feel Robbie smiling to himself.

After a moment, Robbie surprised himself by saying, “Then let’s do it. Let’s get married today.”

Kelly pulled away, looking at him wide-eyed. “Really?”

Robbie shrugged, “Yeah. I mean, would you want to do that? I know it’s not, you know, a grand whole-” Robbie moved his hands in a circular gesture, “thing,” he finished.

Kelly smiled and nodded. “Yeah. Yeah, let’s do it.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah!” Kelly grinned, then he looked around, at the house. “We can do it here, maybe set something small up outside.” He looked back at Robbie. “Let’s get married today.”

***

Robbie walked out to find the yard had been decorated with rows of chairs where members of the Bennett pack could sit. There were fairy lights strung up around trees and somehow lighting up the middle of the sky, and fireflies lit the area here and there as they passed by. There was a small altar set up at the end of the aisle, in between trees that were wrapped with more twinkling fairy lights.

Carter clapped Robbie on the shoulder. “Pretty good, huh?”

“It’s... it’s beautiful,” Robbie finally managed, smiling at him. “You all... did this for us?” He was already blinking back tears.

Carter rolled his eyes. “Yeah, dude. Your pack. It’s what Pack does. ‘C’mon, we should get up there before Kelly gets here.” Together, they started walking down the aisle, where Ox and Joe stood on opposite sides of the altar, acting as best men. (Ox for Robbie and Joe for Kelly, since Carter had insisted on initiating the wedding.)

Robbie stood at the altar and felt a wave of calm come over him as Ox squeezed his shoulder, smiling at him. Joe smiled at Robbie, then looked at Ox, his gaze softening as Carter came to stand between them all, winking at Robbie as he did. The rest of the pack filtered out, filling out the seats that sat before the altar, most of them holding hands as they took their seats.

Robbie heard the door open before anything else, and his heart started beating faster. His palms were sweaty, and he started to once again feel nervous; the previous calm feeling that emitted from Ox was receding. Finally, he looked up, and Kelly was there. Robbie immediately felt a sense of safety and home, and it was Kelly, Kelly, Kelly. Kelly looked up right at him, and their eyes collided like a car crash. Robbie’s eyes glistened with water, and he tried to blink away the tears as he took in his soon-to-be husband. His husband! he thought, happiness overcoming him, and he couldn’t help the smile spreading on his face if he tried.

Kelly gave a small smile back, looking like he was nervously laughing to himself as he walked with Elizabeth on his arm. It felt like an eternity as Robbie waited for Kelly to finally reach him, and as he waited, he kept thinking to himself how, once Kelly finally reached him, he’d never let him go.

Finally, Kelly came to a stop in front of the altar and leaned down as Elizabeth kissed his cheek before stepping up to join Robbie, where Carter stood in between them, ready to minsitrate. Carter began and walked them through the usual wedding jargon until they got to the vows, where they had agreed to write their own to each other.

Robbie went first, his eyes glistening as he spoke, and he only had eyes for Kelly. “I vow to protect you, to cherish you, and to make you as happy as I can, even when we fight,” he chuckled, and Kelly joined in, his eyes a glossy blue that reminded Robbie of the ocean. “And I vow to love you with everything I have.”

Kelly gave a small smile, letting out a sound that was in-between a sob and chuckle. He squeezed Robbie’s hands that he was holding. “I-” he laughed as he let go to wipe a stray tear away before starting again. “When I first saw you, I knew who you were. Who you were to me or who you would be. And I didn’t want you at the time. What with everything going on back then. And I vow to never make that mistake again. I vow to always want you—to want you by my side—because you keep me safe and warm, and when I’m with you, everything is green. I love you, Robbie, and we’re going to grow old together, and I want you by my side for all of it.” Robbie squeezed his hand, running his thumb over the back of it as he tried to blink away the tears that were now streaming down his face.

They exchanged wedding rings and were met with cheers as Carter said, “You can now snog each other.” He winked. Kelly rolled his eyes as Robbie stepped forward and kissed him tenderly, then hugged him, holding on tight as Kelly buried his face in Robbie’s neck. They eventually pulled away, laughing as they cupped each other’s faces and stroked each other’s cheeks with their thumbs, trying to wipe away the tears.

After the ceremony, the backyard was filled with laughter, the fairy lights twinkling overhead under the stars that twinkled above them. Music and chatter filled the air as people danced and ate. A variety of dishes had been laid out on the big table they usually reserved for eating at during Sunday dinner.  A space had been cleared to make a temporary dance floor while Dinah Shore sang from Elizabeth’s record player.

Kelly and Robbie now sat in the middle of the table, holding hands and laughing at something others around them had said. They had already had their first dance as a couple, and Kelly had let Robbie lead. Now, they were back to conversing with themselves and, every so often, swapping stories with those around them. Most of the others at the table had left to join in on the dancing or get more food from inside to lay out when Joe and Ox walked up to the two of them. Joe was holding Ox’s hand as he said, “We got the blue house set up for you two,” Joe winked at them.

Robbie and Kelly looked at each other, confused, before looking back at their Alphas. “The Blue house?” Robbie asked.

“Why?” Kelly narrowed his eyes suspiciously at the two of them. “Aren’t we staying here tonight?”

Ox shrugged. “We figured you’d want your own space on your wedding night.”

“No pressure.” Joe added, shrugging nonchalantly.

Robbie smiled at Kelly, squeezing his hand reassuredly before glancing back at his Alphas. “Thanks, guys,” he told them. Kelly smiled and nodded before they walked away, then leaned his head on Robbie’s shoulder.

“We don’t have to do anything you don’t want,” Robbie told him in a low voice, aware of how Kelly felt when it came to intimacy.

“I know,” Kelly said as he lifted his head and looked at Robbie. “And that’s what I love about you,” he said as he kissed him, Robbie smiling as he did.

After a while, the party started to dwindle down, and Elizabeth started cleaning up. “We can help,” Robbie offered, but she shook her head.

“I’ll hear of no such thing. It’s your wedding night, you should go. Enjoy your time together,” she said.

Robbie laughed as Kelly blushed, groaning under his breath, “Mooom,”

Elizabeth just rolled her eyes.

“Shall we?” Robbie asked Kelly as they stood at the edge of the party, everyone else doing their own thing. They looked around one last time at their pack and at their family. A family where Robbie felt he finally belonged, who had shown up for him and who was now reaching out and grabbing his hand as they walked toward their future together. Together, hand in hand Kelly and Robbie wandered down the dirt road to the blue house.

***

The blue house still stood empty, and the electricity was still turned off from the lack of use. Omegas that came were few and far between enough that they had enough room for them in the basement of the Bennett house, though soon, if more came, they might use the blue house if needed.

The moonlight shone through the windows, lighting their way as they made their way upstairs. They came to the landing and saw that one of the bedroom doors was open. In the room was a mattress that had multiple blankets and pillows and was littered with rose petals as candles flickered to life spreading dim light and shadows throughout the room. Robbie went first; he sat down on the mattress, one leg up bent at the knee and one leg crossed underneath him. He smiled at Kelly, who stood in the doorway, taking it all in. Robbie held out a hand to him, the sound of his heartbeat filling the room. “Come here,” he said.

“This is...” Kelly trailed off, unable to find the words.

“Yeah,” Robbie agreed. “I can’t take credit for it. Though, it’s much appreciated,” he said with a weary smile.

Kelly kicked off his shoes then walked over and sat on his knees on the pallet, facing Robbie, who sat against the wall. There was a beat of silence as they searched each other’s faces in the candle light that spread shadows along their faces.

Gradually, Kelly reached out to touch Robbie’s face, but before he could, Robbie took his arm and kissed the palm of his hand before glancing up with a small smile and saying, “We don’t have to. Do anything you don’t want,” he repeated, his voice barely a whisper.

Kelly smiled, “I know.” He leaned forward so that their lips were inches apart, his hot breath on Robbie’s face. “I want to. I want to touch you,” he said, sliding his hand down Robbie’s arm and sending a shudder through him.

Robbie leaned back, one hand bracing him up on the side of the mattress, as Kelly kissed him tenderly and deeply, cupping Robbie’s face in his hands. Then there was a clatter, and they looked over to the side of the mattress to see a knocked-over bowl, contents spilling out onto the floor, containing small square-shaped items of multicolored wrapping, along with a small vial containing some sort of liquid. It took a minute for recognition to set in. Then Robbie blushed as Kelly said, “Guess they thought of everything,” he gave a small laugh that sounded like ringing bells and the sound made Robbie’s heart race once more. Kelly arched an eyebrow at him, and Robbie smiled, leaning forward to kiss him again.

The window was open, the curtains were flowing against the breeze, and a strong burst of wind blew out most of the candles. They stopped, looking around their surroundings, their faces now only illuminated by the moonlight and stars outside.

Slowly, they reached out and touched each other in the darkness. They took their time, slowly undoing the buttons on their vests and then loosening their ties as Kelly pushed Robbie’s vest of his tuxedo slowly down his arms, Robbie lifting his hands off the mattress before eventually tossing it to the side, then mirroring his actions on Kelly. He leaned forward, kissing Kelly’s lips, his jaw, and his neck, and ran his fingers through his fine blonde hair, as a sigh escaped Kelly’s lips.

They pulled a part but only just, as they searched each other’s eyes in the darkness, their shallow breathing filling the silence of the room alongside their pounding heartbeats. Slowly, and gently Robbie continued to touch Kelly, tentatively so as to allow Kelly to stop him if he desired to; he didn’t. Kelly was touching him back, and Robbie felt hot in the spots he touched, like he was burning from the inside out. He felt the need and want for more and it was all LoveMatePack and KellyKellyKelly. There was a small tug in the back of his mind, a light voice saying RobbieRobbieRobbie in return.

Later, when they were fully undressed and drenched in sweat, their eyes met and Kelly gave a small nod from where he lay underneath Robbie, who was gently holding him. “Are you sure?” Robbie asked, his voice barely a whisper.

“Yes,” Kelly breathed.

Robbie reached down and took Kelly’s hand in his, and felt Kelly squeeze in return as Robbie leaned down, his fangs extending. He could taste copper as he bit down on the flesh between Kelly’s neck and shoulder, then he felt a sharp sting in the the same spot on himself as Kelly bit him back.

Mated, Robbie thought to himself, tightening his hold on Kelly’s hand.

Then, he was transported back… back to him and Kelly.

It was Kelly standing with his brothers and their witch, looking at their family standing next to strangers, and

It was a strange wolf in glasses – Robbie - standing on the porch and there was something special about him, and Kelly just knew.

It was Robbie reading one of his cheesy romance books and Kelly laughing for the first time at something he had said.

It was Robbie bringing Kelly crackers because Kelly was hungry and he knew they were his favorite.

It was RobbieRobbieRobbie… And it was home.

It was…

Robbie standing on the porch, as four strangers appeared out of the shadows, something flitting in the back of his mind about one of them – Kelly.

It was Kelly kissing Robbie for the first time under their tree.

It was Kelly inviting Robbie to take a walk with him and Robbie accusing him of being mysterious.

It was Kelly giving Robbie his wolf and Robbie giving his in return.

It was KellyKellyKelly… and it was Grass. Lake water. Sunshine.
