Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

...

Do you really think your choices do matter?

Ridiculous, such childish beliefs.

You don't belong here.

This is not a story where you are the main character.

Go back to where you belong to, K-

(Thump)

"KRIS!"

It's Thursday morning today. Kris went to bed a little late last night; they spend hours talking to their brother Asriel over the phone, he was away from home for a while now. The sound of their Mother, Toriel, attempting to wake them up. It is a bit overwhelming, as they are still tired.

"Kris, wake up now or you will be late for school again!"

"I will be waiting outside then."

After Toriel leaves the room, Kris slowly gets off their bed and opens the curtains in their bedroom, exposing sunlight to their once dim room.

"It's Thursday, huh."

Kris thought to themselves.

Without thinking much, Kris leaves their bedroom and goes downstairs. They took a quick breakfast that their Mother had already prepared by the dining table; a still-warm baked Pie, and a glass of chocolate milk.

After preparing themselves, they goes outside to greet their Mother who was waiting in the driver's side of their car, parked right in front of their house. Kris hopped into the passenger's seat and Toriel began driving to the school.

"Kris, the weather is pretty nice today, is it not?"

"I hope it stays like this when your brother goes back home from college next week."

"But still, I wonder if he will enjoy coming back home to this town after the excitement of university?"

Toriel starts driving off to the school. While on the way, she greeted several folks on the streets who spotted their car. She is in fact a well known teacher who worked at Hometown's Educational Institution, the same school her child, Kris, attended to.

"I hope Asriel would be pleasant."

Kris thought to themselves.

They arrived and parked their car at the parking lot. Before they both walked into the entrance of the school, Toriel faced their child and hugged them.

"Just, behave, okay?"

Kris nodded.

Toriel then left their child and went to the eastern area of the school to attend her class as the homeroom teacher, as Kris decides to go to the west, where their class is. They rushed to the class, as they are late, after all. Miss Alphys, the homeroom teacher of the class Kris attended to, already arrived not long, starting the class. She is currently writing on the blackboard; there is a group project, it seems.

Alphys temporarily stops writing just to look at Kris, who looked like they just had a marathon from running all the way through to the class. "A-ah, Kris... we thought you weren't attending today! Well, we're starting a group project for the month. S-so, look around and try to find your partner, ok?"

Kris just nodded at Miss Alphys' command.

They looked around the class, trying to find a potential partner for the project. They went to their childhood friend, Noelle, and her close acquaintance, Berdly. Both were the top smartest students of the class, or at least, this is what Berdly thought of the two of them as. Maybe, from their help, Kris could finish whatever this group project is way faster, right? Well, unfortunately for them, the two already had each other as partners.

So Kris looked around, it seems everyone already has their partners. Kris goes back to Noelle, asking if they could have a group of three.

"You want to be partners with us? Sorry, Kris, but Berdly already asked me... Well certainly I could ask Ms. Alphys if she could allow us to make a group of three people."

As before Noelle could rise her hand to ask Miss Alphys, someone suddenly busted the classroom door open. It's Susie, the school's troublemaker. Everyone just stopped doing whatever they were doing and starred at her. Even Miss Alphys was stunned by her sudden arrival. Though, Alphys could have scolded her for being rudely just busting the door open without knocking or anything, disrupting the class, or just being late.

And so, Miss Alphys did. She tried to scold Susie for being late, saying she should be sorry. The troublemaker responded by saying, "Well, y'all should be sorry for coming early then". She shuts the door behind her, and approached her desk to sit down.

Kris and Susie had a history of the latter bullying them. Kris was always quiet, making them an easy target for her, but Kris doesn't seem to notice this or tell Toriel, their mother. At one day after school, Kris falls asleep at their desk and Susie bullied them for using apple-scented shampoo. Kris suppresses a laugh when Susie threatens them with as if she was eating an apple. With their quick reflexes, Kris deflected and caught the apple Susie threw at them, biting it. Susie grabs them by the hair and says she thinks Toriel would be happier if Kris disappeared. Noelle, who witnessed the incident, notices that Kris responds calmly and Susie leaves abruptly. Later, Kris finds Noelle at her locker, but eventually walks away without saying anything.
