Cooper had never been overly religious before the world burned in radiation, even less so afterwards. He couldn't see the point in worshipping someone or something that may or may not exist. And if they did, they had abandoned humanity long ago.
But he wanted to worship every inch of Lucy's body, kneel the way people did to pray so he could inspect every blemish and imperfection on her flesh. As if she was were something holy, and his worship of it could take him on a
spiritual journey.
He wanted to know where she liked to be touched and how, the way those who did believe could reel off every word from the bible.
