It was a beautiful day in May as the sun slowly rose over the horizon, bathing the Canterlot Palace Gardens gated community. A young sixteen-year-old girl with red and gold hair was sleeping. Suddenly, her alarm clock went off even though it was barely six in the morning.
She tried to block out the noise, wondering why her alarm would go off on the weekend. The red gem around her neck started to glow, and suddenly, her dream world changed to show her in a room with loads of people in white coats.
The teenager's aqua eyes looked around, trying to figure out where she was. “Hello? Can anyone help me? I'm a little lost?” she called out.
Suddenly, a woman who appeared to be a nurse came rushing forth. “What are you doing here, young lady?! You should be up in Labor and Delivery! We don't want you to give birth in your pants!” as the nurse forcefully put her into a wheelchair while the teenager protested she wasn't pregnant.
She saw herself in a mirror and realized it wasn't her reflection! But her adopted human mother's! Suddenly, the dream changed again and showed her mother, Sunfire Daydreamer, looking so happy to see her. She then woke up with a start.
“Oh, Princess Celestia! I forgot today was Mother's Day! How could I forget that?!” Quickly, the former unicorn pony jumped out of bed and started to get dressed.
Today, she wore a dress she only wore for special events. It was a sleeveless maxi dress with her cutie mark symbol throughout the print. Sunset Shimmer then quickly fixed her hair. All her jewelry was in place, and she looked perfect.
She then hurried into the kitchen, where she found her adopted human father, Yin Yang, making a vegan breakfast. Her father was a Buddhist who incorporated much of Asian culture into his daily life.
“Hi, Dad! I almost forgot today was Mother's Day! Where's Mom?” asking about her mother.
“She's getting dressed for the day, sweetheart. While you two bond for the day, I plan to clean our apartment from top to bottom and prepare a large but wonderful dinner for us tonight.”
Sunset raised an eyebrow in skepticism. “You really think you can get the entire apartment clean on your own?” looking at her father in disbelief.
“Trust me, I know what I'm doing, Sunset. You focus on having a good time with your mother. It should be a great day between the spa treatment and your planned special picnic.”
“We're lucky we got a reservation at this exclusive spa. But we've got to be there by eight! We can't be late, or someone else will get our spot!”
“Oh, my darling daughter, you shouldn't worry so much!” as her beautiful mother entered the room. While Yin Yang only wore black and white, Sunfire wore much more colorful clothes.
Today, she wore a magenta v-neck shirt with bell sleeves, a turquoise miniskirt, and a pair of royal purple platform sandals. It went well with her fair complexion, bright red and fuchsia hair, and royal blue eyes.
“Mom!” as Sunset jumped into her mother's arms. She'd never known a mother or father's love back in Equestria. So, embracing her human mother made her feel so much warmth and love.
Sunfire held her daughter close. Sunset Shimmer was her daughter in all the ways that mattered. Neither she nor her husband cared that she wasn't of their blood. Family is bound by love, not blood.
“Did you sleep well, my precious one?” she asked as she kissed her daughter's forehead.
“I had a weird dream that reminded me it was Mother's Day,” Sunset replied honestly, which caused her mother to laugh.
“Well, I wouldn't be surprised if some of your Equestria friends tried to remind you why today is so special!”
“I'm still surprised that you and Dad took it so well when I explained where I actually came from or what I truly was. But without your help and love, I wouldn't have learned to call this realm home.”
“We can also thank Princess Twilight Sparkle for helping you see the light. Breakfast is ready!” her father said from behind. The small family enjoyed their vegan breakfast before mother and daughter went to get pampered.
The Canterlot Spa was extremely exclusive, so they were lucky to get in. The pair had an awesome morning, being pampered like princesses with luxurious beauty treatments.
Around one, they left the spa and went to their favorite spot for a picnic. They enjoyed the bento boxes Yin Yang had prepared and gossiped in Japanese about all their happiest memories.
Following their picnic, they walked around a local lake and visited several other places. When they returned home, they were both surprised that Yin Yang had kept his word about their dinner and cleaning the apartment. The family then watched the sun sink below the horizon, happy as could be for the love they all shared.
