Work Text:
Neil Josten does not call Jean Moreau often so when Jean saw his phone light up with Neil’s name, his blood ran cold. Why would Neil be suddenly calling him? Did their flight get delayed? Did they get into an accident? Is Neil okay? Jean felt his hands slowly reach for his neck before shaking the thought out of his head.
A cool evening breeze. Rainbows. Open roads. Teammates. Jeremy.
He took a deep breath and flipped his phone open to answer right before it went to voicemail. “Hello?” he said hesitantly.
“Jean.” Jean could almost hear Neil’s lip curl in a sarcastic smile. “I need a favor.”
Jean replied with a low hum, his nerves getting the better of his vocal cords.
Neil let out a short but quiet spurt of laughter. “Could you be my best man?”
Jean cleared his throat. “Desolé, could you repeat that for me?” There was no way Neil just asked him to be his—
“Could you, Jean Moreau, be my best man? The one who stands beside me as I officially declare my love and devotion for my… for my you know who.”
“Marriage? To the blond gremlin?”
“Alright, now listen up, you baguette looking moth—“
“Sure, I guess so.” Jean interrupted. “Why me though? Why not Kevin?”
“Oh, Andrew called dibs on Kevin as his, so naturally you’re next on the list.” Jean could hear the soft smile in his voice. He was surprised to hear that the pair would even consider a legal marriage as they didn’t seem the type to care about formalities.
“We are going to the courthouse tomorrow morning. Good luck tonight.” and Neil immediately ended the call.
Jean started at his phone for a few minutes before he heard the apartment door open. Jeremy Knox barreled in, juggling multiple grocery bags which made Jean smile endearingly as he made his way into the foyer to help his boyfriend. “Bonjour, mon coer.”
Jeremy beamed at Jean and handed him a grocery bag that was slipping out of his grasp. “Why hello there my smiling, handsome boyfriend.”
Jean smiled at the floor as he brought the grocery bag into the kitchen to unpack. Together, the duo unpacked three of the bags before Jean mentioned his phone call with Neil. “Neil and Andrew are getting married at the courthouse tomorrow. Neil asked me to be his best man.”
At the sound of the news, Jeremy’s face grew soft and Jean saw tears start to collect in the blond’s eyes. “That’s incredible, love!” Jeremy cupped Jean’s face in his hands and pulled him down so that they were eye level. “I’m so happy for them and for you. I know you probably don’t want me to make a big deal out of it but it is a big deal isn’t it.”
Jean nodded and wrapped his arms around Jeremy’s waist. He knocked his nose with Jeremy’s and kissed the palm of his hand. “I was so nervous when Neil called. I thought… it doesn’t matter. He’s okay. I’m okay. Everyone is okay.”
Jeremy kissed Jean’s cheek before pulling away and dragging Jean to their bedroom. “C’mon! We need to pick out our outfits for tomorrow.”
“But the game—“
Needless to say, Jeremy and Jean were both late to the pre-game strategic meeting.
