If it wasn’t for Riko holding onto his jersey, Jean would have dropped to his knees when he saw Kevin Day for the first time since the striker left the Nest.
His former lover? His best friend? No, Kevin was his Person.
His former person was clad in that obnoxious shade of orange adorned with hideous fox paw prints. He was walking beside his new coach, completely unaware of Jean and Riko. Jean tried to ignore how the shade of orange complemented the beautiful boy’s tan skin extremely well but he was failing miserably. It was different seeing Kevin in the flesh than on the television or in magazines. His dark skin shone in the light, an exact replica of his father’s skin color. The world of Exy was stupid for not realizing the two were related.
Jean watched as Kevin and his father continued to walk away from him. He wondered what the six-foot man thought about and if his brain was only large enough to think about exy. Did he ever think of Jean? Did he ever think about what would have happened if he stayed in the Nest?
Jean felt Riko tug on his jersey which jerked him out of his daydream. He quickly remembered why the two were even here. The Master requested that he and Riko should scout talent at the nearby community college and hopefully find new recruits. If Kevin and Wymack were also here, it was a good sign that there was exceptional talent hidden in the college’s lineup. He followed Riko to the edge of a stack of bleachers and sat down.
“Stay here.” Riko declared abruptly. “I need to make a call.”
Jean nodded his head and watched the striker walk over to the payphone near the concession stand. Jean let out a sigh he didn’t know he was repressing. He kept an eye on Riko from the corner of his eye when he felt a presence sit down next to him.
“Hello.” a hushed voice said in French. “I didn’t expect to see Ravens here.”
Jean didn’t even need to turn to see who was sitting next to him. The atrocious French accent gave Kevin away instantly. Jean looked out of the corner of his eye to see the tan beauty softly grinning at him.
“You shouldn’t be here. Riko will—“
“I miss you.” Kevin whispered while he traced the scars on the back of his own hand.
“Kevin, you know I can’t—“
“I know.” He saw Kevin reach out to grasp Jean’s thigh but stopped short. “As much as I miss you, I know you’re better off without me.”
“Kevin. Please leave before he sees you.” Jean’s voice shook in fear. “Please leave before he sees me talking to you.”
Kevin stood up without a reply and started to walk away. “Wait, take this. In case you need it.” Kevin gave him a folded piece of paper. Jean opened it to see a telephone number. “In case you want to talk, new number.”
Jean nodded and placed the paper inside his sock. “Goodbye Kevin.”
“Au revoir.” Kevin gave a small smile before walking away.
Riko returned fifteen minutes later and recounted his conversation to Jean. Riko only mentioned the important details, such as which players they should keep an eye on. Jean had trouble focusing on the game, all he could think about was the moment he would text Kevin for the first time in six months.

Hello
It was nice to see you today
Did you find any valuable talent?
Only one; not sure if we will actually sign them though. What about you?
No one but the trip wasn’t a complete waste of time, I suppose. I did get to see you.
Please stay safe.
I will try to my best.
