Work Text:

Bang!

Blood.

Bang!

Grey matter.

Bang!

Bone shards.

Bang!

“Rei?”

The silence echoes.

“I’m busy, Kasumi.”

“I know you’re upset-”

“Upset!? You think I’m upset!? I’m fucking livid, that’s what I am!”

“Look-”

“No! You almost died . And for what? Someone who had already been bitten, that’s what for! You have no regard for your life, for my life, and you want me to do what! Grin and bear it? Ha! Dream on.”

“You’re being unnecessarily mean.”

“And you are being unnecessarily stupid.”

“Rei!”

“What?”

“I understand, I was reckless and whatnot, but you’re being a fucking asshole right now and I’m not going to put up with it!’

“Then leave, no one’s forcing you to stay.” Purple eyes darkened.

“You want me to leave? Fine! I’ll leave, but don’t expect me to come back.”

“Suit yourself.”

Kasumi stormed out, her footsteps heavy and the air around her charged with sadness and anger. Rei turned back to the ledge, to the zombies below, but couldn’t find the energy in herself to aim and pull the trigger anymore.

Kasumi…

She was all Rei had left. After Poppin’ Party, after Raise A Suilen, after the outbreak. They saw friend and foe perish alike, saw more destruction than what the human mind could bear, all together. So yes, perhaps Wakana was being rude and mean, but could you blame her? If she lost Kasumi she would have nothing to live for.

The wind blew and, on the horizon, dark clouds formed, matching the dark haired woman’s mood. The building they had formed their base on wasn’t overly high, nowhere near a skyscraper, but being near the outskirts of the city they had a clear view of everything.

Still watching the infected mulling around, Rei suddenly noticed their attention being caught by something. At first she paid no mind to it, they weren’t a threat five floors below, but then they started moving towards the building and-

Kasumi.

Kasumi, reckless and with a heart of gold Kasumi, was now walking out of the front door and towards the streets, attracting the attention of about every zombie within walking distance. Rei made a strangled sound and quickly used the scope to look at her partner better: the fool didn’t even have a weapon!

“Fine! I’ll leave, but don’t expect me to come back.” Oh. No, no, no, no, no, no.

The first zombie finally got close  enough to Kasumi, who barely made an attempt at dodging the attack. She just kept walking forward and attracting more zombies by the minute.

Bang!

Blood.
