Morax raised his eyebrows and glanced meaningfully at Xiao's memory box. "That was a very romantic letter."
Immediate disdain and disbelief flooded Xiao's chest. He scoffed and pulled his hand back. Then he shook his head at Morax, fixing him with a stern, disapproving frown.
"Stop sullying my letters with your degenerate mind. You're the one who told me I should be honest with my friends."
"Oh, and you honestly love her?"
"Morax, you know I don't like when you tease me."
The archon grinned. "I'm sorry."
"You are not."
Xiao has spent six years dutifully sending Lumine letters for his birthday. When Rex Lapis reads one of these letters, Xiao becomes painfully aware that they are full of romantic subtext that he did not intend.
After enduring (affectionate) mockery from both the archon and adepti, Xiao must face something even worse: Lumine's reaction.

Xiao misses the first signs that his heat is creeping up on him, slow and inevitable: it has been centuries since he has been anything other than detached from his body, and is glad for how his own body does not betray him. Incapable, he thinks in the years after he finally realizes that he is long past the time when he should have gone into heat again, made so by the weight of his karmic debt and his inability to desire, and does not question or examine the state of his body any further. As long as he can still fight, then any other failing of his physical form matters not at all.
"Xiao," his lord asks, one morning, just past dawn. "Are you well?"
He does not understand the question, and can think of no reason why he would not be.
