Work Text:
On the night of her 20th birthday, when Luka reached the age that soulmates began singing with each other, it started.
An enchanting melody entered her head, and she was compelled to sing along with it. She beamed with excitement. Wow! It’s really happening, my soulmate is out there somewhere, singing right now! But it’s so late, they’re really singing at 3 in the morning?
Luka wondered if that meant that her soulmate lived in a different time zone. It was entirely possible, it wasn’t exactly likely that her soulmate would simply live around the corner. Luka was going to have to do some serious searching if she was going to find them.
More songs entered her head as days passed, they were all beautifully crafted and filled her with a deep emotion that she’d never felt before. She’d never heard the songs before, and began curiously using the lyrics she knew to look them up on every music platform she could think of.
Unfortunately, her work never bore fruit. She couldn’t find the songs anywhere no matter how hard she tried.
But, she kept singing the same 10 or so songs; every single night, like clockwork. Occasionally she might hum the tune to herself during the day, but she was unsure if this was due to her soulmate’s humming or the songs simply becoming etched permanently into her brain.
It sure felt like it, the music consumed her very being and became the only thing she could think or talk about. “I just have no idea what this music is, or where my soulmate could be!” She told her best friend, Lily, one day.
Lily only shrugged. “I dunno Lulu, I’ve never heard that music before. You’ll just have to keep looking.”
And so, Luka did. Everyday and every night she searched those lyrics on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, or she’d just Google them in hopes that it would turn up something.
But it never did. It was beginning to drive her insane, how could she not find it anywhere?
Months passed, then a year. Then two more years came and went. Luka was beginning to lose hope that she would ever find her soulmate. I’m going to die alone, or settle for someone who also can’t find their soulmate. Maybe I’ll become a crazy cat lady.
Then, one day, a miracle happened.
A new single hit TikTok, and her eyes bulged wide. There it was! One of the songs that had been stuck in her head for years!
She immediately clicked on the “sound” section of the app, and hummed to herself as she read the artist’s name. ‘Hatsune Miku.’ I think I’ve heard Gumi talk about her… She releases all kinds of music; she’s very experimental. Could… she be my soulmate?
It had to be the only explanation. How else would Luka have had music stuck in her head that nobody else had heard of? The music must have been an unreleased album that she’d been working on for the past few years. I have to meet her. It’s the only way to know for sure.
Luckily for Luka, once another year passed and the album had been fully released and gained traction, Miku announced a world tour where she would perform it live for the first time. When Luka checked the tour’s website to see if Miku would be performing near her, she saw that the closest venue was 3 hours away.
This was no problem for her, she was too excited at the potential to finally meet her soulmate. As soon as the tickets went on sale, she bought a VIP ticket with a backstage pass that offered a one-on-one meet and greet. It took up nearly her entire paycheck, and she briefly worried about how she was going to pay rent, but it was more than worth it to her.
The months passed as slowly as syrup dripping down a stack of pancakes. She constantly looked at her calendar as though that would change what day it was.
Then, finally, the day of the concert arrived. She looked through her closet in an attempt to find the cutest outfit she could think of. She settled on a fuzzy two tone button up crop-cardigan; it was half pink and half turquoise. The pink side had little turquoise flowers, and the turquoise side had the flowers in pink. The skirt she chose was also two tone, turquoise and pink, and it was extra pleated for maximum cuteness.
She braided her hair in a side ponytail and finished it off with a hair tie that had a turquoise bow.
She felt cuter than she ever had in her entire life, definitely ready to meet her soulmate, she thought.
On the way to the concert, she sang the album from start to finish, then did it all over again. Miku must have been warming up.
Luka gripped the steering wheel tightly and fought to keep from trembling as she thought about the fact that she was meeting her soulmate for the first time. By the time she finally reached the city where the concert would be held, she had to stop for gas. She impatiently waited for her tank to be filled, and once it was, she made her way to the venue.
She winced when she had to pay $20 for parking, but it was okay. It was all going to be worth it when she finally met Miku.
She began vibrating when she was let into the venue, she feared her soul might take flight and escape from the way her heart pounded in her chest.
She was led to the back room, and there, sitting in a chair touching up her makeup, was Hatsune Miku.
The turquoise-haired girl turned to Luka and smiled. “Ah, I’m so sorry that I’m not ready! I didn’t realize what time it was!”
Luka shook her head. “I-it’s fine…” Shoot, she’s getting so nervous. The butterflies in her stomach were numerous and took up all the space inside as they fluttered about. They were unbelievably crowded in there.
Miku beamed as she got up to come a bit closer to Luka. “You’re the first one to greet me today! You came so early, are you one of my biggest fans?” Miku asked as she winked.
“Y-you could say that…” C’mon Luka, tell her why you’re really here! Luka gulped and sweat as she tried to calm her nerves before she said what was on the tip of her tongue. “I-I came here for a reason, actually…”
Miku raised an eyebrow. “Oh? There’s more than just wanting to meet me?”
Luka nodded timidly as she touched her index fingers together. “Y-yeah… Y-you see…” Luka paused and took a deep breath, she looked at the cement flooring so she wouldn’t have to look Miku in the eye. “I think… That you’re my soulmate.” Luka sweat even more when she heard a soft sigh.
“Listen, you're really cute, but do you know how many of my fans have said that to me?” Miku asked with a smile that screamed of pity.
Luka clenched her fists at her sides with determination. “I'm sure many, but I'm telling the truth! I can prove it!”
Miku frowned and hoped she wouldn't have to call security. Then, something that changed her entire world happened.
Luka began singing the first single on Miku's album. Then, in perfect harmony, Miku sang along with her. But it wasn't because she chose to. Like she was a puppet on a string, the universe compelled her actions. Her eyes widened and though she tried to stop, she physically couldn't.
To prove her point, Luka even switched midway into a song that wasn't even Miku's, but still Miku sang along with her. When Luka finally stopped singing, both girls went to catch their breath.
“Now… do you believe me?” Luka panted. She didn't have anywhere near the lung capacity that Miku had.
Miku breathed much less erratically, and managed to say, “Yes… But I feel like I must be dreaming. I never thought… that I would meet you. And… No offense, but I never pictured that my soulmate would be a woman. All the same… You are the most gorgeous woman that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.”
Luka averted her gaze and played with her braid. “...The same goes for you. Your voice is enchantingly beautiful… I could listen to you sing forever.”
Miku grinned and approached Luka. Luka’s eyes widened when Miku was suddenly in front of her, and leaning in to whisper into her ear. “Well, now you can… We have a whole lifetime to spend together, after all.”
Luka shivered, Miku’s lips had ghosted against the shell of her ear. She was suddenly overcome with the urge to kiss her, but she held back. They had only just met, she wanted to take things nice and slow. “D-do you, um… Want to go on a date with me? Maybe before you have to go to the next stop on your tour?”
Miku smiled sadly. “I’ll have to travel to the next city as soon as this concert is over, unfortunately. But I’ll give you my discord so we can call and video chat there until I take a real break from touring.”
Luka nodded, then held out her phone for Miku to input her contact information. Luka then checked to make sure they were friends, and smiled when she saw that they were.
“Amazing. I’ll talk to you later, enjoy the show!” Miku offered a hug, which Luka gratefully accepted. Miku felt so small, so soft in her embrace. Luka wanted to squeeze her ‘til she popped, but decided to settle for an only somewhat bone-crushing bear hug. “Mmmm, you give nice hugs!” Miku praised before Luka freed her.
“Ah, thanks, I try-” Luka squeaked when Miku leaned up to gently press her lips to Luka’s cheek in a chaste kiss.
“See ya when I’m on stage!” Miku winked and blew a kiss before trotting back to finish working on her makeup.
In a daze, Luka stumbled away and wandered until she found the pit in front of the stage where she would be standing. She was the first person here, too, and took her place dead center.
She played around on her phone for an hour or so as the venue became filled with thousands of people over time. Then, the lights went dim. She turned her phone off and looked up at the stage. Fog machines had begun billowing clouds of vapor into the air, then multi-colored lights shone through them.
Finally, a spotlight centered on the stage as Miku stepped out and waved at the crowd. A large, loud chorus of screams filled the area as everyone worshiped the idol that stood before them. “Everyone! Welcome! Thank you so much for coming today… This album is one of my favorite ones I’ve ever written, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!”
Luka cheered along with the audience as the first electric guitar riff permeated the air. Miku grabbed ahold of the microphone, and Luka’s jaw dropped when Miku made eye contact with her. The girl sent a wink in her direction, and Luka nearly fainted.
As the concert went on, Miku only continued to throw glances, smiles, and plenty of winks in Luka’s direction. Luka feared she might actually die before they got to have their first date.
Luckily for her, she somehow survived the show. Confetti burst from a large disco ball attached to the ceiling, showering the fans in shiny, rainbow-colored pieces of foil.
Luka grabbed some to keep as a souvenir; the little pieces had Miku’s name written on them.
The crowd went crazy, and they began to chant for an encore. Luka shouted at the top of her lungs, then screeched when Miku came back on stage for one more song, a bonus song that she hadn’t even released yet.
The crowd couldn’t sing along, but they didn’t care. They were just happy to hear more music from their favorite artist.
Luka received incredulous looks from her neighbors, since she was the only one able to sing along with Miku.
When the final song came to a close, Luka felt that her throat was completely raw from singing through the entire concert. She would definitely need water and plenty of rest when she finally got home that night.
Then, Luka sighed heavily. She was sad that she had to leave Miku behind without a kiss, or even another hug. But she couldn’t hold the idol up when Miku had a long way to travel to her next stop.
So, Luka exited the venue, but not without casting glances back at the stage where Miku had once been.
The drive back home was a long one, and Luka got further and further away from her soulmate.
But she tried to cheer herself up. They were connected through song, even when they were miles apart. She had managed to find her soulmate, and said soulmate was the Hatsune Miku.
She found herself feeling giddy to the point of giggling by herself. Her phone buzzed with a few notifications, but she ignored them until she was safely home.
When she opened the texts, she beamed brightly as she read through them.
Miku had sent a selfie of her doing a peace sign and pursing her lips.
Miss you already! Can’t wait to get to know you better :)
<3, Miku
Luka fell against her bed and hummed with content. She was looking forward to whatever the rest of this life had to offer her.
