Swim to a New Life

Summary:

The docks are a place that you like to go to when you’re feeling down or just need a break from life. Given the fact that you hate the island that you live on, you visit the docks a lot. Hardly anyone uses the docks and as a result, seals tend to gather around there. There are two seals in particular that have caught your eye. Little did you know that you caught their eyes as well.

Work Text:

I can't stay here, you think to yourself. You run wherever your legs carry you. It's pouring rain and in a matter of seconds, you’re drenched by the rainwater. After running for who knows how long, your legs give out, and you’re left sitting on rain-soaked wood. Once you finally catch your breath you take stock in your surroundings. You're at the docks. There aren’t a lot of seals at the docks today, most likely due to the storm. But as always your favorite seals are there in the water.

“Hey, you two,” you greet, knowing full well that they can’t understand you. You move closer to the edge of the dock and the two seals approach you. One of the seals has a slight yellow tint while the other has a blue tint. Somehow they look concerned. You sit down at the edge of the dock and the yellow one brings its head up to your hand. You start stroking its head. The blue one doesn't get closer but it watches the two of you intently.

“I wish I could leave this place," you lament to the seal.

"Come with us," a gravely unknown voice says. You whip your head around trying to locate the source of the voice. When you look back at the seals you can't find the blue one.

"Where's the other one?" You ask the yellow seal. The seal simply looks at you in response.

"He's right here," that same unknown voice says. In place of the blue seal, you see a tall, dark-skinned man wearing the blue seal's skin. Terror tightly grips your heart as you look at the sight.

"What did you do?" You ask, terrified.

"Sun, could you show them how we transform?" The man asks as he gestures towards the yellow seal. The yellow seal takes off its skin like a suit, and underneath that suit is a tall, pale human with blonde hair.

"Sure thing Moon!" The formerly yellow seal cheerfully replies. You can't believe your eyes.

"What are you two?" You ask, still terrified.

"We're selkies!" Sun explains.

"We're seals with human forms," Moon explains. The term selkie is something that you're slightly familiar with but you never thought that they were real.

"We've noticed that you don’t want to stay here, so we want you to run away with us!" Sun proclaims.

"And how am I supposed to do that? I can't exactly turn into a seal."

"You’ll take one of the old boats here out to sea and we'll make sure that you safely get to a new and better destination," Sun explains as if this was a normal thing. The two seem to notice your apprehension about running off with two part human part seal strangers.

"Come on, don't you trust us?" Moon asks.

"Not really, but I guess this is my only chance to leave so let's do this," you reply. Sun and Moon help you find an old boat that was left at the docks. You assume that once you find one, Sun and Moon will turn back into seals. It doesn’t take very long to find a good boat.

"So, are you guys going to turn back into seals now?" You ask.

"That's the plan," Sun glumly says.

"What's the matter?" You ask.

"We won't be able to be humans again for seven years," Moon explains.

"We won't be able to talk to you," Sun sadly says.

"I can wait. Besides, I normally talk to you two when you're seals anyway," you reassure.

"Yea, but we want to join you in your human activities," Sun says.

"I promise that once you two can turn into humans I’ll show you all of the things that humans do," you reply.

“We’ll hold you to it,” Moon replies. The three of you take the boat out to sea. Sun and Moon make sure that your boat doesn't get swept away by the waves and finally you make it to land. You can't wait to start your new life. You also can't wait for your seal friends to be humans again.

Notes:

When I heard that the prompt was all things seal my first thought was selkies so that’s what I went with! (Fun fact: I played a selkie in a play when I was little.) I hope you enjoyed this little fic!
