christmas tradition

Summary:

Unlike every other winter when he's been feeling cold in his bed, this time, Kiyoomi wakes up warm and comfortable. It's still December and it's still freezing cold outside, but this year he has his human furnace of a boyfriend in his bed.

He snuggles closer into his boyfriend's body, places his leg in between Atsumu's, and tightens his grip on his middle. He thinks about the fact that tomorrow is their first Christmas together and he can't help but grin.

Work Text:

Unlike every other winter when he’s been feeling cold in his bed, this time, Kiyoomi wakes up warm and comfortable. It's still December and it’s still freezing cold outside, but this year he has his human furnace of a boyfriend in his bed.

He smiles as he replaces his head comfortably on Atsumu's chest.

They’ve been together for about eight months – even though they’ve been mutually pining for years, as Kiyoomi learned on the evening he confessed to Atsumu back in May and was fully expecting a rejection – and Kiyoomi has never been happier. He did have a few flings in the past, but this is his first real relationship and he couldn’t have asked for a better first, official, boyfriend. And he really, really , hopes that he’ll be his last one.

He thinks about the small vacations they took together during the summer and all the other small trips they did. He thinks about the chill days they spend at one of their apartments just enjoying each other’s company. He thinks about all the dates they’ve had and the ones they will have in the future — Kiyoomi thought the dates would stop short after they got together but it turns out that Atsumu apparently loves taking him out; and who is he to refuse. All in all, he thinks of all the moments they spent together and he wants those to last for the rest of his life. His heart feels full every time he thinks of Atsumu.

He snuggles closer into his boyfriend’s body, places his leg in between Atsumu’s, and tightens his grip on his middle. He thinks about the fact that tomorrow is their first Christmas together and he can’t help but grin. That's another thing that changed within himself once he started dating Atsumu. The blonde seems to have that incredible skill that makes Kiyoomi like almost everything. It’s not that he hated Christmas before, but he never really cared for it either. There wasn’t really any difference between Christmas and his birthday for instance — both consisted of just a family dinner and gifts. But not with Atsumu. Because Atsumu, Kiyoomi learned, absolutely loves Christmas.

“It's a time of love, Omi!” He cried the first time Kiyoomi asked why he loved it so much. Atsumu doesn’t love that many people, but the ones he does, he does unconditionally. Which is why Atsumu loves spending Christmas with his family so much, especially since he’s not as close to home as before now that he’s at MSBY. But, according to him, it all makes the reunions even better.

Luckily for him, Kiyoomi also figures on that list of people Atsumu loves. So how could he have ever said no when the latter asked him to spend Christmas with him at the Miya household? He honestly didn’t even need that much convincing, but it was sure that, after having seen how big the smile on Atsumu’s face was when December 1st arrived, Kiyoomi didn’t stand a chance.

And because Kiyoomi told Atsumu that he wasn’t really used to Christmas tradition, the blonde made it his mission on earth to show Kiyoomi what a true ‘Atsumu christmas’ is, as he called it. So they did it all. They went tree shopping and they decorated them together (yes, them , because Atsumu insisted on Kiyoomi having one in his apartment too), they went to Christmas markets (several times, and they drank hot chocolate every time they went), they went ice skating (Kiyoomi fell an embarrassing amount of times but it was definitely a price he was willing to pay if it meant that he could hear Atsumu’s laugh more), and they got matching Christmas sweaters that Kiyoomi definitely would have never worn in his life if Atsumu hadn’t forced him.

All of it has been so domestic that Kiyoomi is scared his heart might explode with how full it feels.

Today is Saturday, December 23rd and, usually, Atsumu goes back home a few days before Christmas because he enjoys the preparations with his family. But Christmas Day is on a Sunday this year, and they had a long afternoon practice on Friday — it was so that they wouldn’t have one today. They could have driven to Hyogo yesterday after having left the gym, but they were both too tired from their day so they settled on sleeping at Atsumu’s and leaving the next morning.

And Kiyoomi would never say no to sleeping at Atsumu’s. Waking up all snuggled up to his boyfriend has to be one of his favorite things ever , and even more in the blonde’s apartment (he absolutely loves how Atsumu’s bedsheets smell like him, although he’ll never say that aloud).

Thinking of, the raven may have woken Atsumu up when he moved just earlier because he now hears him groan softly under him as he emerges. The blonde then stretches out while still holding Kiyoomi, and finally opens his eyes. His eyelids aren’t even fully opened yet but he still immediately turns his head to Kiyoomi and smiles softly.

“Mornin’ baby,” He says in that deep, sleepy voice of his.

Kiyoomi smiles lovingly at the sight. “Morning,” He replies before drawing in and leaving a soft kiss on his boyfriend’s lips that Atsumu more than happily reciprocates.

After an unknown amount of time spent making out, Atsumu gets up from the bed and Kiyoomi immediately feels colder. He quickly gets up and makes his way to the shower to warm himself up while Atsumu goes to prepare them breakfast.

Once he’s dried and dressed up, he keeps a towel around his neck so that his damp hair doesn't dampen his shirt and he makes his way to the kitchen. It smells good when he enters the room. Atsumu doesn’t seem to have heard him, if the way he’s singing while cooking their eggs is anything to go by. Kiyoomi doesn’t say anything and simply enjoys the sight, smiling fondly — yet another domestic scene that makes his heart flutter.

Omi !” Atsumu screeches and jolts as he turns around and spots Kiyoomi on the counter. “I didn't know yer here!”

Kiyoomi only smirks in response and Atsumu scoffs, his cheeks slightly pink. They then eat breakfast in comfortable silence.

Kiyoomi isn’t someone who enjoys talking a lot in the morning and, although it was unexpected, he’s been pleasantly surprised to learn that it’s the same for Atsumu.

Once they’re done, Atsumu goes to take his shower while Kiyoomi does the dishes. When Atsumu is done, Kiyoomi joins him in the bathroom where they brush their teeth before putting their toothbrushes in their toiletry bag. That was the last missing item as they both packed their bags yesterday so that they wouldn’t have to do it this morning.

It’s around 10am when they’re ready, which is the perfect time since they had planned to arrive around lunch time in Hyogo. They effectively put on their coats and shoes and leave the apartment.

Atsumu insists on driving so Kiyoomi goes to sit in the passenger seat, and they’re gone before long. The drive is pleasant. Atsumu put on his playlist in the background (“ Driver gets to choose the music, Omi, that’s the rule! ”) and sings aloud most of the songs that come up. Kiyoomi watches him, smiling, and sings too sometimes when he knows the lyrics. He also takes the opportunity to look at the landscape by the window since he doesn’t get to see it a lot — he never takes those roads unless he goes to the Miya’s house, and he only went twice.

They chat about everything and nothing. Atsumu places his hand on Kiyoomi’s thigh about ten minutes in the drive, and it stays there for the whole trip. Kiyoomi greatly enjoys the warmth that comes from it and puts his own hand on top of it, intertwining their pinkies. A fond feeling rushes through him as he sees Atsumu smile.

They arrive at the Miya household soon enough, just a bit before noon. They get out of the car and hear the front door opening as they’re retrieving their bags from the trunk.

“Kiyoomi darling! I missed ya!” Atsumu’s mom, Chieko, yells from the porch.

Kiyoomi’s cheeks redden at the unexpected confession while Atsumu snorts next to him.

“Ya saw him fer my birthday Ma!” Atsumu yells back as he closes the trunk and locks the car.

She huffs, as if she can’t believe what nonsense Atsumu just said. “That was too long ago!” She opens her arms as soon as Kiyoomi reaches her, and he gladly hugs her.

“How’re ya son? I hope my Tsumu treats ya well!” Kiyoomi chuckles softly as he releases her.

I am yer son,” Atsumu interjects.

They both ignore him. “I'm doing good, Chieko-san, thank you. What about you?”

“Still so polite! I’m doing more than good now that yer here!” She smiles warmly. “And I toldja ta drop that and ta call me Ma, just like the others.”

It already took way too long for Kiyoomi to drop the ‘Miya-san’, he isn’t sure he can do that just yet. He just smiles and doesn't say anything.

“Can I get my hug now, or should I just leave Omi here an’ go back ta Osaka?” Atsumu, honest-to-god, pouts .

They turn to look at him, unimpressed, and then break into laughter. Atsumu huffs and they both surge forward at the same time to hug him. “C’mere ya big baby,” Chieko says as her arms engulf Atsumu in a bear hug.

When they part, she hurries them inside so that they don’t catch a cold and tells them that Osamu is almost done with cooking lunch so they’ll eat soon. They go to the kitchen to greet him and Suna, who’s watching him from the counter — the sight reminds Kiyoomi of himself when he was watching Atsumu earlier in the day and his stomach does a weird flip upon the realization that, contrary to them, Suna and Osamu have been together for years . God he hopes he’ll still get to do the same in several years too.

After that, everything went really fast. They made their way to the guest room to put their bags, and then had lunch all together. Chieko explained her Christmas preparation tasks, telling them what was done and what still needed to be done. They spent the afternoon chilling at home all together, playing some board games.

Around 5pm, when it was dark outside, Atsumu took Kiyoomi to the christmas market – “It’s not the same as in Osaka, Omi!” – to show him the lights as well as the different booths held by artisans. They stop to get hot chocolate, as always, and go back to walking hand in hand through the market.

Atsumu looks absolutely ethereal under the lights, Kiyoomi realizes. “I love you,” he blurts out mindlessly as he’s admiring his boyfriend.

Atsumu's head turns so fast that Kiyoomi is scared he broke his neck. “I– I love ya too, Omi. What brought this up?” He asks, his cheeks red from what Kiyoomi hopes is that confession and not just the cold.

His own cheeks redden under Atsumu’s loving gaze. He shrugs, trying to appear nonchalant,  “I don't know. Just wanted to say it.”

Atsumu smiles in response and doesn’t add anything. They just continue walking, slowly making their way back home.

They had dinner afterwards and then spent the evening on the couch, the five of them in front watching Christmas movies. And Kiyoomi got to fall asleep snuggled into Atsumu’s side for the second time in a row. Oh how he will never get tired of this.

Their limbs are still entangled when they wake up peacefully the next day, they smile at each other before joining their lips. Then they go down for breakfast, chat a bit with the others and then they leave the house to do some shopping according to the task list Chieko told them the day before. Kiyoomi and Atsumu were in charge of decorations shopping, while Osamu and Suna were in charge of food shopping — Osamu does most of the cooking so it’s only fair.

They’re all back around noon so they eat the lunch that Chieko cooked while they were out. And then they spent the afternoon preparing for Christmas Eve. Atsumu and Kiyoomi decorate the house with what they bought in the morning while Osamu cooks with the help of his mom. Suna is in charge of dressing and decorating the table.

Once they’re satisfied with how the living room looks, Kiyoomi, Atsumu and Suna go to see if the two others need help but they’re being kicked out of the kitchen as soon as they step foot in. Chuckling, Suna and Atsumu make their way to the couch while Kiyoomi goes to take his shower and get dressed for the evening. They all go in turn and before they know it, they’re welcoming the rest of the Miya family for Christmas Eve.

Throughout the whole evening, Kiyoomi is stunned to realize that he totally fits in. Absolutely no one treats him as if he’s a stranger, or even just someone external to the family. And he’s ever more stunned to realize how he, too, feels at home here. He enjoys the conversations he’s having with Atsumu’s grandparents, as well as his aunt and uncle, and he’s even getting along with Atsumu’s five-year-old niece (who is absolutely adorable).

He finds himself grinning so much during the evening that he’s pretty sure his jaw hurts because of it. He's sitting next to Atsumu, who occasionally touches his thigh – a silent way to ask him if he’s okay – and Kiyoomi always squeezes his hand reassuringly to let him know that yes , he’s more than okay.

To be perfectly honest, he feels like crying from joy. It's his first Christmas in Atsumu's company, but he already looks forward to the next ones. He holds his tears back in though — he isn’t really fond of crying in front of people, even crying in front of Atsumu is still embarrassing to him.

Although that only applies until they open the presents and Atsumu gives him a very small wrapped gift.

“What’s that?” He raises an eyebrow at his boyfriend.

Atsumu's cheeks somehow gain a pretty red color. “Well open it, Omi!”

“We said we wouldn’t buy each other anything though?”

Atsumu scoffs at that. “Ya think I dunno that little bag with my name on it is from ya?” He asks as he points to a small bag next to the Christmas tree that, indeed, Kiyoomi put there. He blushes at getting caught, and Atsumu opens his mouth again before he can justify himself. “Plus I didn’t buy it so technically I didn’t break our rule.” He adds, proudly.

“...You’re offering me something that you stole?!” Kiyoomi whisper-yells.

Atsumu snorts at that, “Of course not!”

Kiyoomi looks at him unimpressed before he decides to open the small package when he sees Atsumu’s fidgety behavior.

A key. It takes him a few seconds to recognize it and when he does, he gasps, his eyes widening comically. “Atsumu… I–” He stumbles upon his words when he raises his head and sees Atsumu's face. He's blushing, hard .

“Uhm. I dunno how much time people usually wait before movin’ in together but I do wanna live with ya, Omi. I wanna go ta bed with ya and wake up next to ya every day. I love ya Omi, and I’m dead serious about this relationship.” The raw honesty in Atsumu’s tone and eyes is what makes Kiyoomi’s eyes water. “But no pressure of course! If yer not ready – or don’t want ta move in with me altogether – ya can still keep the key and use it ta come ta my apartment whenever ya want!” He adds with a smile so earnest that Kiyoomi feels a sting to his heart.

“Ats–” He clears his throat as he embarrassingly chokes on his saliva when he tries to reply. “Yes. Yes, I want to move in with you. God there’s nothing I'd want more.” He chuckles wetly as he feels a single tear flow on his cheek.

Atsumu's smile in response lights up his entire face. He throws himself on Kiyoomi, who more than happily catches him. “I love ya, Kiyoomi.” He whispers in his ear.

Kiyoomi feels his jaw hurting with how big he smiles but he ignores it. “I love you too, Atsumu. So much.”

They both tighten their grip around each other at the same time before drawing back just enough to face each other. They lock eyes for a few seconds before surging in and capturing each other’s lips with their own.

And for the nth time since he started dating Atsumu, Kiyoomi thinks about how he wants this to last for the rest of his life.
