April Fools?

Work Text:

Atsumu is curled up in a ball in a dimly lit corner of the locker room where’s he’s being consoled by Bokuto and Hinata.

“What’s that all about?” Kiyoomi asks his captain.

Meian deadpans as he responds, “His fish died.”

Kiyoomi rolls his eyes in annoyance. “For crying out loud,” he mutters under his breath as he walks over to the pity party. “Nice try, Miya.”

Atsumu looks up with puffy, bloodshot eyes. “Huh?” he asks pathetically.

Kiyoomi peers skeptically at the weeping man, and if he wasn’t such a cynic he might’ve believed the bastard. “Dead fish. Really?” he mocks.

“Omi, leave him alone.” Bokuto pleads before Hinata adds, “Yeah, Omi-san. There’s no need to be so cruel.”

Kiyoomi casts crooked glances at the two pawns. “I can’t believe you’re playing along with this charade,” he scoffs, ignoring their pleas. He pivots 180-degrees and walks back to his locker.

“Yer such an ass Omi-kun!” Atsumu belts angrily, stopping Kiyoomi in his tracks. “I’m glad ya never met Goldie, she woulda hated ya.”

Kiyoomi stiffens his body as he turns around, meeting the eyes of pure hatred. The exchange jolts him to him very core. Maybe he had it all wrong?

No. Today is April 1st, and this is Atsumu. It’s definitely a prank.

But what if it wasn’t? Kiyoomi and Atsumu had gotten much closer recently, but he’s never visited the blonde’s place before. So he can’t be sure that Goldie didn’t actually exist. Though even if she did, who’s to say she’s dead?

Kiyoomi tousles with reason before coming to the conclusion that it’s not worth losing a friend over this if he’s wrong, and if he’s not, he’ll just buy Atsumu a fake Academy Award and laugh about it later. He relaxes his shoulders and huffs out a deep sigh as he walks back over to the group.

Atsumu nods to Hinata and Bokuto, “Give us a minute?” he requests and the other men oblige, offering their regards to Atsumu once more before taking their leave.

“I’m sorry, Miya,” Kiyoomi softens his voices as he apologizes. “Is there anything I can do?”

Atsumu stares at the ground for a moment before tilting his head to meet Kiyoomi’s gaze with the biggest puppy dog eyes he’s ever seen. “D’ya think you could keep me company this evenin’?” his voice soft, but desperate.

Kiyoomi gulps, throat bobbing at the suggestion. “What about Bokuto and Hinata?” he asks nervously.

“They’ve got plans.”

“Oh.” Kiyoomi replies shortly. “I don’t know—“

“Please, Omi?” he flutters his insanely long lashes, shying away as he adds, “I—I just don’t wanna be alone.”

Kiyoomi’s chest fills with warmth, but he quickly replaces that feeling with one of guilt as he remembers why Atsumu is asking him to hang out in the first place. He needs a friend right now. A shoulder to cry on.

“Sure,” he finally responds.

Kiyoomi spends the evening listening to Atsumu’s stories about his beloved Goldie, shedding a tear himself when the blonde cries during ‘Finding Nemo’.

But when Atsumu kisses Kiyoomi later that evening, he can’t help but be grateful for the ‘divine intervention’.
