“The magnolias are bloomin’.”
Kiyoomi takes a second to adjust his ears; there’s no way he heard that correctly. He’s been sitting next to Miya on road trips for an entire year and not once has the man ever commented on the foliage. “Hmm?” he mutters to his teammate.
“I said the magnolias are bloomin’!” Atsumu repeats louder as he leans his head against to the window, sporting the most smitten look. “Ain’t it pretty, Omi Omi?”
It’s suspicious, the way the blonde is acting.
Kiyoomi’s eyes narrow, still observing the look of bliss on his seat partner’s face. “What are you going on about, Miya?”
Atsumu turns to Kiyoomi, his grin turning down into a sudden frown. “Weren’t ya listenin’? The mag-“
“Yes, yes. The magnolias.” Kiyoomi finishes, eager to find out where this is going. “You’ve never noticed them before?”
“It’s not that I never noticed ‘em. I just…” Atsumu taps his chin as he glances up at the roof of the bus, as if it holds all the answers in the world. “I overheard ya talkin’ to yer cousin last week about how ya really like spring, ‘cause of the sakuras and all. And it got me wonderin’—what do ya think about the magnolias?”
Kiyoomi’s jaw drops, eyes fluttering in disbelief as he tries to process everything Atsumu just said. “I…you…huh?” he stutters.
“I mean, do ya also get excited when the magnolias bloom? Ya know, since it happens a few weeks before the Sakuras?”
The dumbfounded expression on Kiyoomi’s face softens. He won’t dwell the fact that Atsumu eavesdropped on a private conversation, especially since it’s resulting in such pleasant exchange now. “I’ve actually never thought about it before,” he responds, finding the corner of his mouth tilting upwards as he looks out the window. “But now that you mention it, I suppose it is quite nice.”
Kiyoomi can feel the gaze of the other as he continues to peer at the blooms, and when the bus hits a slight bump, a loose curl falls in front of his face. Kiyoomi jumps as the other man’s hand instinctively pushes the strand behind his ear.
Pitch-black irises briefly peer into honey before both men suddenly turn away. Kiyoomi feels the heat blazing across his cheeks. What the hell just happened?
Before Kiyoomi has a chance to look back at Atsumu, he feels fingertips graze across his skin. The blonde is still facing the window as he looks over his shoulder, but as Kiyoomi’s eyes shift down, he catches a glimpse of the guilty appendages dancing atop his hand.
Kiyoomi turns his palm upright, clasping his fingers between the setter’s. Atsumu jolts, eyes wide as he looks down at their conjoined hands.
A fond smile flashes across the raven’s face as he rests his head against the blonde’s shoulder, looking out the window once more. “Yeah, I’m definitely excited about the magnolias.”
